The theme.

So the theme is greed. What a strange topic…
I honestly don’t know what game I should make. It will probably involve stealing items or cash from something. The weird thing about this competition is that every item must be unique.
This will be a challenge. (Especially since this is my first competition)
Oh, and the fact I know little about the game library I’m using.

This game will be coded in Python with pyglet. (Yayz!)
For those who are interested, I’m making this on Fedora 13. (which in fact I just installed today)

Good luck - fingers crossed

My Brilliant Idea!

So you’re an evil alien race who wants to conquer Earth. You have a spaceship that shoots freaking lazer beams. In the levels your goal is to kill all of the population in the city. Once you kill all the citizens and enemies you win that level. Now eventually you encounter tanks that fire bullets at you and move around. After a few more levels you encounter flying robots invented by human engineers. They give off streaks of energy that can hurt your health a lot.

I call this game Conquer The Planet. Now “all I need to do” is code and make graphics for it.

I just hope I finish it. xD

Switching to pygame

After a couple hours of frustration due to pyglet, I’ve decided to switch to pygame.
I don’t think it’s terrible or anything, it’s just because of some concepts I’m unfamiliar with. Also, I know pygame better than it.
As for the game, I’m going all out on this. I’ll post another blog post when I have something to show. :)
Currently I would say that I’m 99% done with the concept, 25-50% done with images, and 0% done with code.

I have a LOT to do.

Yeah dude, good luck! The problem you got with your framework I always have with my concepts that turn out to be unrealistic or fail because of my lack of cleverness 😀 ! The last hours I spend on a party so that is the “best” for finishing a game tomorrow 😀

Yeah, and I don’t even know about vectors so I’ll be finishing up all tomorrow too. O_o

A little preview

So I’ve gotten all the utility code done. Pretty simple code, I just I had to test it to make sure it worked. Here is a screenshot of my terrible spaceship and city background. :)

What the ufo and background look like

What the ufo and background look like

Now I know I won’t get an award in presentation. >.> The background is one image, not really any kind of object or gameplay changer. Anyways, it’s pretty much nonfunctional, I just assembled this to see if the functions worked and to show you guys here at LD. 😀

Screwing it off.

I might have to completely screw the idea I have.

Why? It’s too complicated to finish in 3-4 hours for someone who doesn’t even know pygame that well.

So what I AM doing is making a game where you are an alien saucer that steals minerals from planet Earth. Simple.

ghetto to the max

OK so here’s my crappy game. hobo at #pygame called it ghetto to the max, so I decided to keep the name.

Anyway the reason it’s so terrible is I spent 5 hours in #pygame asking questions and trying to solve to stupidest of problems.

Description: A game where a ufo that fails at getting minerals, and clones itself every time it moves.

I'm just going to submit this "game" and get on with my life. LOL

Requires python and pygame. Run game.py to play.

Conquer The Planet

A long time ago in a not so far away land called MiniLD#20 I attempted to make a game. It was called Conquer The Planet and it completely failed. This time, hopefully, it won’t. The theme was greed, which I’m still going for, but I’m screwing the “only one of an object rule” because that’ll add a whole ‘nother level of complexity I don’t want to deal with. :)

Here’s the original concept idea if you’re interested: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2010/07/16/my-brilliant-idea/
As for the game code, I’m too embarrassed to show anything from that. :(

Wish me luck! (and follow my progress and give me inspiration and motivation and stuff!) 😛

Progress. Yummy.

Ok, I’ve gotten things done! Feels good. 😀

The character now moves correctly and can shoot laser beams. (Thanks to HyrdroKirby in #pygame and cafesofie in #ludumdare)
I’ve also given the clouds a thicker border to make them look *nicer*
Here’s what it looks like:

Laser beams!

Laser beams!

Too bad it only gets a terrible 16-26FPS. :(
I’ll have to optimize it somehow. The code is extremely rubbish at the moment.
Next up: citizens and tanks.

Yay ^.^

Done! sorta…

Well, time management didn’t go as well expected. What can I say?

Anyway, I didn’t have enough time to finish the tank and robot system. My code is poorly designed, but oh well. What I did finish though is citizens moving around and an energy meter. (you can only shoot for a certain amount of time) Oh, and a score system. :)

Hey, at least I did better than last time.

And so I’m back

with my ridiculous game ideas! 😉

Anyway, this ludum dare, I will be participating in the actual compo. Crazy, isn’t it? I’m going to be working on getting MVC, time-based game loops, and good coding practice this time.

Since the theme is discovery, a giant wave of creative ideas came in my head. It all came down to this:

There is a scientist who creates a robot as his explorer basically. And he gets sent to Earth to search for signs of previous life (this is post-nuclear Earth btw, just because…) You then explore caves and find stuff. For example a cell phone would give the message “you found some sort of communication device!” etc.

Here is my sprite for the robot. (coloring will be put in when I after I make the walking animation):

Please tell me what you think in a comment. :)

Sounds cool so far. The robot is indeed cute :)

Looks a tiny bit like a skeleton as well.

Hmm.. wonder what a robo-skeleton would look like?

Good coding practice!?

So I’m thinking

Of making some sort of alien shooter game. You leave your home planet to go kill aliens, and he gives you a SMG. :)

Gotta aim small this time. Wish me luck

Aiming small is always my problem too!!! I’ve got far too many games from half-finishing LD challenges :)

Introducing…

Space Genocide

Space Genocide! Yes, sounds horrible. This is the menu to the game I am making, it even has blinking text!!! 😀

This will be a sidescrolling shooter game where you go to an alien planet. And of course it will be dangerous, so here’s an SMG.

repulsive. I want this one tossed out. it’s completely anti-semic in it’s reference to Genocide. Judges – can we get a ruling on this ? There’s probably going to be some subliminal subtext to this that all of us are going to regret being affiliated with. let’s pull the trigger now for the community as a whole.
TheLolrus

woah woah woah… completely not what this game is about.

There is no subliminal subtext, it’s own the text that says start the game.

Please consider this is a fictional game where you kill aliens, and will in no way harm anyone or convince people to.

Space Genocide Update

So you ask, why haven’t I updated since Friday? Well, because I’ve made some awesome progress. The storyline is as follows: You are Commander Tirax of Planet Yarynx in the Prolock Galaxy. You have declared war on Venox. You go alone, so the leaders have given you a SMG! So far I have the intro, story, and a stage scrolling map. I just have to make better walking animations, shooting, enemies, and finish up the stage backgrounds. Here are some screenshots. I hope you’re as excited as I am. 😉

Finished!

Alright, well this time around in ludum dare I finished everything I had planned and gotten a decent game. I know I’m not going to win, but such a fun experience! Anyway, here is the submission for it: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-20/?action=preview&uid=2287

A little snippet too: 😉

In the Prolock Galaxy there are two planets: One being Yarynx and the other Venox. Yarynx has declared war on Venox and your job is to capture their capital. Don’t forget to take your SMG!

WASD to move and SPACE to shoot.

LD22

Kung Fu Pygaaame!

Although I missed previous LDs, I am back for this one! Yes, even after my failure of a game Space Genocide. This time I’ll drink more coffee then usual by hiding it in the shelves from my parents and stay up much later than usual.

As for tools I’m using, as always python and pygame for gameplay, GIMP for sprites, and sfxr for sounds.

My weakest fault is probably the graphics part, I’m terrible at it. I guess I’m going to have to spend hours on it, otherwise it just looks like… well… shit. Aww well, for supreme success, I will practice practice practice! :)

The idea and dinner

Once upon a time there was a man with a brilliant idea for the theme “Alone.”
That man later that evening ate some dinner. :)

Delicious Pasta

Delicious

I ate that around two hours ago. So far I’ve got the basic story figured out and the utility code all cleaned up and ready for use (hopefully).

If you’re wondering how the story goes, well here you are:

You are the Captain Onyxbeard of the mighty ship of Thunderbolt.
Your crew committed the act of mutiny, and abandoned you on a mysterious island!
The only items you have in your possession are a cutlass, an empty bottle of rum, and a journal.

Tell me what you think in a comment. <3 (oh yes.)

I have barely anything to make a game out of, and there’s only around 7 hours left.
I could join the jam, but I don’t really want to. Thinking of learning lua + love2d instead of pygame. :(

Good luck for next time.

I hear that Love2D is pretty decent engine.

LD23

I’m in!

So the theme I wanted got upboated into heaven so I’m pretty happy about that. And I think I’ll do good this round as I have some experience under my belt and ready. I’m using pygame + python as always. I wanted to use love+lua because me and 4 other guys are doing a project in it over summer, but people on irc said to stick with what you know, so I guess I will for this LD.

For ideas I thought of something to do with vikings because I was swordfighting with a friend earlier. OR larping, whatever you want to call it. >.>

Lykke til!

Scrolling engine, but no gabe.

So of course by the second day with only 5 hours left I only have an engine. This is why pygame annoys me sometimes. 😛

What’s awesome is that I still want to create the idea in my head “Little Viking.”
What’s not so awesome is I’ll definetly not be able to finish by either the jam deadline (because of school) or the regular compo. So I’m continuing it as a personal project, and something I’ll actually finish dammit. It will be licensed under the new bsd license (my favorite open source license…)
The things left to implement in the engine are jumping and making it so it doesn’t redraw every single tile on the map when you move. I’ll keep you guys updated I guess. 😀
