Pinguin fight !!!

In the small and [literally] unstable world of Iceburg, homogeneity is the key to social peace. When you, a fat and red penguin come to life, the community feels threatened in its foundations and need to react. How ? By slapping, pushing and killing you of course !

Yet it's the moment for you to fight the other pinguins!

Come fight with the penguins on our game now! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Sorry I have to ask...

but my game only has 7 reviews so far, so I'm quite a way from 20. I have reviewed a bunch of games already and am willing to review any you leave in the comments if you could just take a look at mine (you can play it in the web browser) over at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/the-ludum-show. Thanks :)

Make some lemonade and rate my game!

Heyo! So it's the final day for voting and I'm a couple of votes away of 20 on all my scores , so please help make a tad bit more of this :lemon: lemonade :lemon:! Screenshot/em66.png

Late and Small Post-Drinking

We really took the idea of an anniversary seriously, so we aimed to create a game while drinking a lot of beer. For the sake of Ludum Dare’s next 15 years!!!

The idea doesn't sounds so right now that I'm writing it and, in fact, it made that the first day a mess. The jam started at 3:00 AM in our Time zone, so we were at a rock bar until the fateful hour. That meant that one of the team members fell in action (I won't say who) and nested in the only couch of the office.

So the remaining two started prototyping ideas on paper and blackboard until almost 10:00 AM, when they fell asleep on a table. Shortly after this event, the fallen team member woke up and gathered the other two to his home so they could sleep in a bed. During the way, they told him that they've got a great idea: something related to two tiny planets sending messages via radio frequency.

However, the afternoon came and one of the team members who took part in the brain storming awakened with his mind changed. He stated the following: 'We are thinking on complex ideas instead of focusing on a small funny concept, like an arena or something'.

And the other two agreed because ideas worth to nothing. In fact, they agreed a lot, the game would be a multiplayer arena. Also, each of one added an idea of his own to the arena concept:

  1. A button would suffice to control the characters.
  2. The world would be hell. A small hell, of course.

And everything went smoothly from there. We invited some friends to test the prototypes and we saw it was funny even for non-drunk people. In fact, the development was going so well, that we went to a rock concert to celebrate. They were two amateur groups, but they were really good and the beer was almost better.

Screen3.png

The following day we polished some features and added the sound effects (the beer was really helpful for the countdown). We also added the famous Wilhelm Scream to the mix. And for the music… As our musician was in a stag party, we took the tunes from our last Ludum Dare and they fit reasonably fine, so we moved on.

As we had to work on Monday, we closed the project and spent what we could of the last day fixing some bugs and uploading it.

Maybe one day we’ll be able to add some features that we discarded for time reasons: power-ups, more interaction with the scenario and random goats.

And that’s all! You can make a game in weekend while partying! Ludum Dare Celebration completed with success!

Before results come in, check out Bubblenaut ! A relaxing and oniric game.

We are pleased to present our Ludum Dare 38 project : Bubblenaut !

ANTIVIRUS - Video post mortem

I thought I would share my video post-mortem for LD38. I made this before actually seeing any reviews from players, so I might follow it up with a second, talking about people's feedback. I've had some fantastic critisims that have been really valuable.

Short on ratings! Friday! New features

Hey folks!

Semi-bad news: we don't have enough ratings for the results yet!

Yesterday we had about 800 games (of ~2980) that met the minimum threshold for a score (about 20). That's barely more than a quarter of all games submitted. Usually it's under a quarter that don't have enough for a rating.

At the time of this writing progress is good. We are close to one third of all games, but I would like us to push as close to half as possible. So, I'm bumping results day to Friday.

That said, I put together a quick poll to get your opinion on the new date:

https://goo.gl/forms/MPM40z0Nhrtl9zY33 <-- Poll

Besides the obvious things (voting started late, 1 week less, lack of filter variety) I started getting reports last week that folks that were getting 50% less ratings than expected. It took some digging, but long story short, the algorithm was punishing users that were extra generous with feedback (oops)! So as a temporary measure, Monday morning I switched us to a more aggressive version of the old algorithm (30 vote cutoff, instead of 100). That has helped, but it wasn't quite enough.

Today I've made several new alternative filters available, most importantly the new Danger filter.

filtersoo.png

If you're familiar with the old Rescue Rangers, Rescue Chicken things that users ran on the old site, it's like that. And since it's integrated, I can make it the default (at least until we get the backlog of "almost there" games across the line).

You can check on our progress towards 50% by viewing the event stats here:

https://api.ldjam.com/vx/stats/9405?pretty (proper page is coming soon)

Boston

I was really hoping to avoid this, but I am travelling to Boston on Thursday. I'm on a train all day, and the train WiFi isn't very good (sometimes non-existing). So if I'm unusually quiet Thursday, that's what happened.

I'm in town meeting some friends for a thing next week. Friday I'll be working out of the Collective's office, so I'll check on things and flip all the switches for results then.

I also hear there's a Game Jam going on somewhere in Boston this weekend. I don't know the details, but I do hear a couple of the guys are helping out, so I may make an appearance there (just to say hello).

Only a few more!!

I need about 10 more reviews on Claimed so it can get an official scoring. :scream:

I've been working on updates for it since Compo ended, but I'm waiting until they're all done so I can have one big post-jam release.

If you leave Claimed a review, I will happily review yours in return!

Mind The Gap Friends & Family Improvement Patch Available!

Hey guys, just in time for the ending of Ludum Dare; I uploaded a signficant overhaul to the game to show off to my friends and family. You can find it over on itch.io at https://izunah.itch.io/mtgalpha.

Now in the game is a title screen, music, difficulty levels, options menu with fun features including GodMode / Jumping / and Grapple Super Speed, a tutorial, and most importantly a fixed aiming and collision system. If you played the game before I highly recommend checking this out, you'll have a lot more fun.

Thanks everyone who checked out and rated my game; and good luck to everybody in the last couple days. I hope we can get the number of qualifying games up there before this ends.

Take care!

Caelium Alpha - Developer Reflection (Postmortem)

May-16-2017 19-28-13.gif

:waningcrescentmoon: >> Play Caelium Alpha Here <<

Caelium Alpha was something that I always wanted to make, interactive software for making imaginary solar systems. I think this was my more favorite Ludum Dare event yet. I made something decently playable within the 72 hours, but also made a Post-LD build that has more features and bug fixes.

I really appreciate all the people who played the game and gave feedback! The feedback will help me greatly in determining what features to add to the game and what should be fixed. I intend to keep making this after the event's over, but it will have to progress very slowly because of life obligations.

:ballotboxwith_check: What Went Well
  • I'm happy with the complex object hierarchy that allows each of the planets to orbit around the star with different orbit speeds and rotations. It can even support tilt (like the planet Uranus), but this was an experimental feature that was not released as of yet.
  • The UI could always improve, but I don't use Unity's UI features that much, so having the changeable UI with sliders feels like an accomplishment.
  • Planet selection with the mouse. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but it's fundamental in order for this game to work.
  • The particle effects help with depth perception and adds visual cues to the game.
  • Got great feedback from the Ludum Dare community. Thanks again!
  • Object-based data system that allows stars, planets, and moons to have adjustable properties that they all have in common while also having unique features.
  • Decoupling between a planet's data and the scripts controlling the properties of a planet.
  • (In the Post-LD Version) My implementation of auto-padding between planets allow planets to change size or have additional moons without other planets colliding them.
  • (In the Post-LD Version) Being able to use a musical piece from Stephen Tanksley. Adds nice atmosphere to the game!
:x: What Went Badly
  • Towards the end of the jam, I encountered a weird bug where multiple planets would spawn the more you add planets. This bug was fixed because someone told me that I could fix important bugs after the jam. The bug was caused by a prefab referencing itself, which is apparently a big no-no in Unity; my blog post explains this problem in depth.
  • Did not have time for sounds in the LD Version, but they are fortunately available in the Post-LD Version.
  • Many people were not fans of the camera controls (especially zooming). I myself do not like my own camera implementation, but I couldn't spend the entire jam making the perfect camera controls ;p
  • My code organization was okay, but it could still use a minor refactor if I intend to develop this game further.
  • Could not get moons implemented during the jam, but fortunately they are available in the Post-LD Version.
:sparkles: Features I'll Consider in the Future

These desired features are not listed in any particular order, and are only up for consideration. They may or may not eventually be implemented:

  • The ability to tilt a planet's orbit and rotational axis (these are partially implemented, not made available to the user).
  • More music and sound effects
  • More realistic orbital speed dynamics based off orbital distance
  • Better camera movement controls (including better zoom (no more fisheye), "anchoring" on selected objects, and top-down view)
  • Different types of planets (rocky, terrestrial, gas giant, etc.)
  • Rings around planets
  • Ability to remove planets and moons
  • Procedural textures with adjustable color properties (very long term feature)
  • Procedural space skyboxes (very long term feature)
  • Realistic rim shader for planets and moons
  • Flare and light effects for stars
  • Rename planets, stars, and moons
  • Pause planetary movements

Once again, I thank everyone who played the game and gave feedback. If you haven't played the game yet, feel free to try it out and give feedback :) If you want to follow further development, you can either follow me on Twitter, follow the game on Itch.io, or bookmark the project page on my blog.

Note that this postmortem is also posted on my blog.

Profile editing bug?

Quick tip if you're trying to edit your LDJam profile page. I tried to edit mine, and found that immediately after editing, if I went back to look at my profile, it seems to cache the old version until I log out and then log back into the site. I lost a few rounds of revision figuring this out, so if it helps anyone else, know that when you hit Save, it's really saved, but you probably can't see the update until you log out/in again.

Listen to my story before Friday Comes :)

I will try to keep this short: The game I made for Ludum Dare is a really quirky and strange one, and much different than any others entered it seems. It doesn't fit the theme, and has a seemingly nice story, even though due to time limits, it isn't put together very well.

However, I spent a lot of time on the music, a little on art, and design of the game storywise.

Music: https://soundcloud.com/flygamer101/sets/kanjo-soundtrack

So If you're looking for a nice visual novel, one with nice music, come stop by! 2.PNG

The reason why I want more votes, is that (as some of you may know) school is coming to a close soon. I will be going into high school this year, and I have chosen to take all the Honors/AP classes possible, so I can imagine I will have less and less time to develop my game. By the end of summer vacation I plan to have a very good, playable Beta which I will release, and I need your feedback!

And feedback and necessary criticism is extremely helpful for my game, as I will take it into consideration later.5.PNG So please! Go ahead! Thanks!

More Nerd Stuff: Tonight's Metrics versus Last Night's

NOTE: THESE GAMES BELOW URGENTLY NEED VOTES:

40 Ratings Given, 14 Received: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/rocket-me-out-of-here

18 Given, 7 Received https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/group-traffic-control

36 Given, 16 Received: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/evo

On to the Metrics!

Ranked Games: 28.70% Last Night versus 32.18% Tonight

Unranked Games: 71.30% Last Night versus 67.82% Tonight

We see a Positive Shift of 3.48% over the course of the Day: 104 Games Added to the Ranked List.

We've seen a very small decrease in the amount of Unranked games with very high GTRR Scores: 2.79% to 2.01% . My current hypothesis on these are games that run exclusively on niche or unpopular platforms. Linux exclusive games seem to be struggling to get folks to play them, despite having very active creators. This group would benefit GREATLY from a Platform tag, Filter, or button so folks on that platform can search for them.

The amount of Ranked Games with GTRR Scores of 0 have decreased slightly, 0.64% to 0.57%, I hypothesize this is the result of creators returning to their previously abandoned pages the night before they assumed voting would end.

Unranked Games with a Score of 0, which I previously labeled "Abandoned", do not appear to have budged significantly. They have gone from 31.04% last night, to 30.84% tonight.

At current rate: We will likely NOT break the 50% Mark. I would guess probably be sitting at about 42%

My current numbers are from a Snapshot at around 5pm Eastern. Credit to: @timeracers

These numbers have shifted about 1% or so since then as per Data from: https://api.ldjam.com/vx/stats/9405?pretty

Agoraphobia - LD38 Postmortem

This was my first Ludum Dare and only my second game jam of any sort, so it was an interesting experience. These postmortems seems to be a common thing and I have certainly found them interesting to read, so I'll add my own thoughts to the mix as well.

I created a game called Agoraphobia, which I felt was an interesting take on the Small World theme. Agoraphobia itself is an anxiety disorder, with one of the most common manifestations (in terms of what is portrayed in media) being people afraid to leave their own homes. I attempted to adapt this into a game mechanic.

What worked:

  • The music - I must first give credit to Abstraction, who made several music tracks that were free to use for LD38. I found track 8 to fit well with my game, though I slowed it down significantly to fit the mood better (using Audacity). https://soundcloud.com/abstraction/sets/ludum-dare-challenge
  • The theme - I wasted a lot of time considering the theme and how I was going to approach it. Yet, despite the toll that took on how much content I could produce, I am happy with my take on the theme. It's a less literal interpretation of A Small World and one I haven't seen any other games do this jam (but would love to see if there are any).
  • UI - The lack of a UI might be more accurate. Aside from a health bar and the anxiety effect, there was no real interface in this game. I thought this may result in confusion for players, not knowing that health packs weren't related to anxiety, or that you could increase your home size/safe area. Everyone I've watched play has understood these mechanics pretty much immediately though; maybe

What could be done better next time:

  • No Jampo! - I didn't make a clear decision to do the Jam vs the Compo, so I ended up not making the best use of either. In hindsight, I should have just gone with the Jam as it allowed more time (which I needed) and I could have used third party graphics, instead of committing to using my own art, which leaves a bit to be desired.
  • Planning ahead - I had not even looked at the list of potential themes prior to the jam beginning, let alone considered what kind of game I might want to make. Next time I would at least consider possible themes ahead of time. I think I would narrow it down to a few potential genres that I would like to work on, then limit myself to one of those once the final theme was decided.
  • More content - This was largely due to me taking so long to decide on an interpretation of the theme; initially I was planning a Carmen San Diego type game as a take on the idea of 6 degrees of separation. Changing my approach halfway though the jam obviously didn't help. As a result, Agoraphobia is a pretty sparse experience.

Other thoughts:

  • This game revolves around a single mechanic. I've watched a few streamers play Agoraphobia so far, for some the mechanic has clicked with them right away. For others, the lack of a fun hook in the game has been the main takeaway (that I could see). I don't think a game that deals with this kind of subject should necessarily be fun but you also have to accept that you're going to have a smaller audience that will be engaged by it.
  • I'm looking forward to LD39!

I just wanna to see if I can get more reviews when I remake the game cover image

Title.png

a) I've get more than 30 reviews. So if you are going to "rescue" some games without enough reviews, eh, you are welcomed too.

b) However, I've seen many excellent games getting only a little reviews. LdJam is getting bigger and bigger and there are a lot of games to play and a lot of great people making great games. I'm wondering if there is a lot of people judge the game only by its cover image. I donnot blame them. Because I did so after I reviewed dozens of games and getting tired. So I decided to remake my game cover image.

c) Welcome to play my game: * https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/clean-the-dorm *

d) How I make my game: * https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/clean-the-dorm/technical-sharing-how-i-make-a-photo-based-ar-game *

e) I'll keep on updating the list below about some very excellent games that worth more than 20 ratings. I think you should play them first after playing my banality game. I'll sort them by how excellent they are:

I beg you play this game. I'm so surprised to see this game in the "Danger Category". When I first see during the jam, I think it must be the top-20 ones.

Since the deadline got extended...

I'd really appreciate it if you checked our game and left some feedback. We've reviewed multiple others but don't seem to get reviews ourselves.

I'm happy with my ratings so far

This year, the theme wasn't my favorite. Despite that fact, i managed to create something that i really like and passionate me enough to work on a full game experience. Now that the ratings are showing, i'm happy to see that i'm no wrong by persevering on that idea.

If you didn't have played the game yet, or rate / commented it, feel free to do so, i'm hungry for feedbacks. Don't forget to mention your game in the comments, i'll be happy to try and review them.

Why its hard to get Rated?

The last days i noticed, that its really hard to get rated. On the pages where you could find games to rate mostly the same games are shown over and over again.

Mike really did a great job on the new Website and its getting better and better, but rating were and are still hard to get.

Also don't just rate games with a nice image, try also ones without the shiny images. I did and sometimes you will find great games.

Last i would be happy if take a look at my game as i don't really get rates:

Hey ! Did you make a one button game ?

Sorry for not rating games.

Hi guys and girls!

First i want to say, i love you! I love you all guys and girls! (Well, boys in pure heterosexual way (except for Mike, my feelings are slightly homo towards him ;-* )

I need to apologize for not rating any games. I was so happy with finishing my LD project Cottage

But, deep in my heart, i was not happy with result. It was just boring and not scary at all. I was really depressed about that from some reason. It was actually first time when i created something what i don't like at all...

But still, i trying to get some votes. (I have 6 now :D).

Sorry for my selfishness and begging even i did not played any game. But if you play my game, it helps me a lot. Even if i think my game is bad, i need to know why is bad. So, play and rate please.

A Message From Dr. Blackcraft

So many things in the world are relative.
Time.
Station.
Size.
This is the one confirmed fact that I have seen in my studies into the world that we live in. So many things are relative, yet they bring order into the world unlike anything man can dream of.
Because of this order, though it may seem hopeless to fight against the chaos and the relativity, I have always observed that our stations in life are as they have always been.
Purposeful.
Perfect.
Right.
Never forget this.

Memory:Leak Postmortem

It's just couple of days left until end of LD38, so I decided to write up my experience in this short postmortem.

From the first hours of LD we decided to create boardgame-ish tile based city builder (actually, the very first idea was about managing a city under siege, like Stalingrad or something, but war theme was not very admissible). mockup.png First mockup

Most of sprites was ready after 24 hours so we had a time to play with game mechanics.

Originally we thought about people moving between buildings by themselves, but after some testing we let that idea go. Too much chaos is no good for ‘eurogame’. moving population.gif Chaos

On the second day of LD we was working on the code as hard as possible. But stupid bugs just didn’t wanted to disappear. Fortunately, most of them was eliminated by Artem, but couple are still there, hiding and waiting to crush everything down. code.png Good ol' switch

At the end of the sunday we’ve got the prototype working. And it was very challenging. Like hell, everything burning! We needed to balance everything down. fire.gif Oh, the last day of LD. That feeling of not making it on time. We still needed title screen, levels and, most important, game balance. At that moment the winning condition was tied with altars, generating victory points, but it was kind of dull and we decided to take a risk and changed everything. From now on the game goal was to occupy every tile. This goal combined with population decreasing mechanics created very challenging, but pleasing feel of struggle. It's like a missing piece of puzzle has appeared. After that change everything started to go by itself. pic2 Finally, after dozen of energy drinks (not good for your health, yo!) the game’s finished and I’m kind of proud with the result. (Of course there's a lot of stuff that could be fixed and improved.)

How 'Bout That?

Search Pane.png
That's exactly what we needed! Thanks @pov!
Although if it keeps expanding at this rate, we're going to have a ridiculous amount of filters.

Petty Puny Planet And Friends! Share the ratings!

PPPandfriendscomplete.png

As we've mentioned in the past, we couldn't be any happier with the reception we've gotten, from players, youtubers, streamers and the like, for our game, Petty Puny Planet. But we at Whales and Games have been so busy that we haven't had time to properly give back.

However, with the introduction of games filtered by danger, we got pumped up. I spent a good chunk last night rating and commenting on games on that filter, and I'm pleased to see that, today, they've all passed the 20 ratings barrier!

Among the ones I've checked out so far:

  • Ellipticats, a physics based collectathon with simple, yet deceivingly wonderful mechanics.

  • Duckinator9000, a bathtub twinstick-but-not-really shooter about a rubber duck and laser eyes.

  • Tiny Colonies, a minimalist simulation experiment where the people live, eat and work on their own.

  • +1CashEmoticon (the game), a game which title I can't really pronounce. In game, it's a pseudo clicker that, plot twist, becomes a competitive scenario.

  • Game of Worlds, a game where you recruit meat shields by day, and fight evil at night.

  • NT-virus, a shooting game that starts slow until you start wondering if you're a worthy opponent of its end game challenges.

  • Yume Dream, a gorgeous top-view adventure experiment with very different maps.

And it's only increasing. Now, here's the problem with the Danger filter. It's mostly showing those games that are about to get past the 20 ratings necessary, while there's a lot more around sitting around 10 that need notoriety. And there's even some people that keep asking for ratings when they're not giving some around. I personally avoided some endangered projects because of this.

I want to keep rating endangered games, but I'd also like to further help those that have been giving feedback to others as well. So, while we're going through more Danger filter, leave a comment here with your game on it if you've given 5 or more ratings, and we'll rate you back. Even if you're past the 20 mark, we'd like to further encourage those that are actively playing and rating more games (playing and rating our game would be cool too, but this is not about us, so it's not a requirement ;3)

Please keep rating and making the LD a more feedback friendly place! Let's help others leave... the Danger Zone.

Thanks for yor time. If you liked this post, here's more Petty Puny Planet stuff for your reading pleasure :whale::

First ludum dare - low votes

Hey everyone. This was my first ludum dare and I was hoping for some feedback so I could improve for the next jam. But as it seems, my game is really low on votes and feedbacks. I have rated some games as much as I could, and little amount of votes is all I received. Please help me everyone _/_ Please rate my game - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/last-breath

Still missing a lot of votes. Check out Goblin Assault, a Tower Defense game

Goblin Assault is a mix between Survival and Tower Defense. We still need lots of votes, so please check it out!

The game is about building Archer Towers and Barricades to kill and prevent goblins from reaching the mighty Crystal of Ididnthavetimetocreatealore. In order to do that, you can build and upgrade Towers - that deal tons of damage, but are fragile - or build and upgrade Barricades - which deal no damage, but have tons of HP.

There are 10 waves. Between each wave, you'll have about 38 seconds (Because it's LD38) to collect wood and stone - which are going to be used to build structures (You can only build during preparation time). You can also use your melee weapon to knock enemies and deal little damage to them. Speaking of which, your melee weapon is very smart and automatically changes to an axe, pickaxe or sword whenever you need it to.

{SPOILERS}: Some waves contain special enemies: a boss on waves 5 and 10, and a special enemy that buffs your melee weapon if killed at waves 3, 6 and 9. There are also 3 normal enemies; a Melee, an Archer and a Tank, which will appear on all the waves (Not necessarily all of the 3) {/SPOILERS}

The game might seem to be too hard at first - which was kind of the intention - but don't give up on it! You'll find it easier with each new attempt you do. The game is also not very long (ranging from 2 to ~15 minutes per run), so you don't lose much time when you get a game over.

For the controls, you'll find them and some more information on its itch.io page, where you will be downloading the game.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/goblin-assault

If you enjoyed the game, check out my twitter (@Syndelis) for some other cool games I'm currently working on.

Also, I love reading feedback, so please leave any comments here, even if they are negative. Cheers.

One last post.

This will be my last post for this ludum dare (I think), please put you (web) games in the comments if you need more votes and I will play the game. If you have time check out my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/earth-quest
