LD17 April 23–26, 2010

Not exactly my place, but it’ll do.

So I had a bit of a curve ball thrown at me earlier in the week, my computer finally up and died.  So I’ll be working in at my space at the uni here.  Luckily I’ve been throwing everything needed for development onto my portable HD, so I should be good as long as I don’t need to actually install anything.

Workspace:

CRT dual monitor! It's like I'm at NASA!

CRT dual monitor! It's like I'm at NASA!

Tools will probably be:

-Flash Develop, because it can run off a portable HD.

-Flixel, with the base code JonothanW threw out there… which I should probably look at before we start.

-sfxr and musagi, because DrPetter is King.

-Graphics Gale for graphics, because it does pixels.

Also, food:

Ohhhhhh. Now with 4 kinds of grain!

Command Centre Operational!

ld_deskphoto

Think I’ve got enough gear at the ready… just need a good theme and some motivation :)

(Spent my ‘LD Preparation day’ finally clearing the junk out my spare room, and moving in all the computer gear, which has been set up in the bedroom for far too long…  Potentially the home office of a future indie game developer… more likely just a location from which to play too much Starcraft 2 in the gaps between continuing to work long hours at a ‘big games’ job…)

As for my LD plans, I think I’ll stick with my traditional C/C++/DirectX, with the base code that I’ve used for my last couple of LDs

pgil’s first LD!

Excited as all hell, too! I have homework and other stuff to do this weekend, but I’m going to make the time to create something. The tools:

Game Maker 7 – For game making
Graphics Gale – For graphics galing
Sfxr – For sfx
MilkyTracker – for music

Let’s do this!

This is a Post.

I’ve always loved this switch.

I can’t live, if living is without desk shot…

Dark picture of a messy desk

Dark picture of a messy desk

XNA for coding, PaintDotNet for gfx, sfxr for audio (I expect), mappy for level editing (if I go 2d route) and using an already existing simple 2d game as a base. I’ll spend the next hour stripping out everything to get a clean base. I’ll hopefully be doing a timelapse desktop recording (no webcam though), and code snapshots every hour or thereabouts when its running. I may check it works on xbox every so often, although if I do put it out (and sell it on XBLIG!) that will come later…

This is my first LD, so no idea what to expect. The photo also shows that Monster Hunter will be played in the background by the girlfriend to sort of keep me company, and also that my desk looks far smaller and messier than I expected.

PJP Dev’s Desk

Here’s a shot of my workspace for this weekend. It’s not the best of setups, but it does what I want it to.

Rather jealous of that food selection…but I do think you should attempt to mix all of them in a blender for more optimal consumption.

Workstation, Impossible Bed & Food Source

Well, the final count down is here, little time to go to finish off that base code, and I discovered today I’ve lost my NES PPU Emulator code which I was going to use for my renderer. Not to worry, should only take an hour or two to write again. Anyways, before I forgotten, I decided to get my workstation photo in, and a photo of why sleep will be tricky – been sorting through my things and eBaying stuff this evening, so everything is on my bed -_-

And onto the food. It’s 1 week till pay day, I’m pretty much broke – and I’m left with minimal ingredients in my cupboard. So here is a photo of the actual edible stuff I have:

Poor choice...

Poor choice...

In there I have 1 rather large bag of pasta shells, an out of date jar of chocolate spread, 2 tins of chopped tomatos, 2 tins of tuna, a bar of chocolate, golden syrup, and a tub of coffee. I also have a variety of herbs and spices, a small amount of frozen veg, and a jar of mayo. Would anyone like to make some suggestions for what I can make when one becomes hungry? If ideas suggested aren’t too gross, I will prepare suggestions and take photos before, during, and after! How’s that for mid-LD entertainment? Make Neilo make bad food 😛

Cool, I use that same keyboard! And have the same situation behind it and to the left. The cups, that is.

Last-Minute thoughts.

I’ve always been a bit of a nerd, and now is a time to show that off. depending if i have time, i’m planning to make my entire game with sprite that are ASCII! Should be fun.

I’m a nifflas fan, so i did a bit of practice with one of the creatures from one of his games:

Object4, Bank 10, Knytt Stories

UPDATE:

Here is another one i have done as practice:

Total and epic win, sir. If you manage… well, it’ll rock.

My workstation- Live webcam with user control!

The school I am at has a live webcam that users can control, and I will be working within its view.
http://www.uat.edu/life_on_campus/web_cams.aspx

(The one named commons is the one I will be at. First to guess who I am wins an Internet.)

Precompo declarations, photos.

Framework:  This Stego AS3 framework thing that I’ve accumulated over the last several months:  http://bitbucket.org/excitemike/stego/

IDE: FlashDevelop. compiling with mxmlc.

Music: I’m thinking WarioWare DIY, then recorded and edited in GoldWave.

Graphics: A copy of Photoshop CS 1 which as far as you know was obtained completely legitimately.

Sound Effects: I bet you can guess this one.

Will be listening to: Switching Pandora between a DragonForce station and a station based on music from movie montages (on which the Transformers: The Movie (animated) soundtrack comes up often! :) ).

For timelapse: I will be using Keeyai’s Chronolapse on account of it’s awesomeness.

Desk:

The Brachiosaurus will be relocated before the compo begins.

Refridgerator:

In case you wondered whether I like bottled water.

Additional foodstuffs:

Inspiration:

I should be playing the GameCube version with bongos.

Me + Hat + FC Twin + Super Game Boy + Game Boy Donkey Kong + Projector = Heaven

Sauce Control: Mercurial, which I love.

Twitter: ExciteMike

Favorite Dinosaur: Microraptor gui

And actually I may use Unity, depending on what kind of ideas I get once the theme is announced, but the above is most likely.

I need to get a decent camera.  The webcam built into the cheap laptop is kind of a pain to use.

ye gods, man, you take the hydration seriously..

T- 2 Hours

Here we go again. It has been a while since my last LD (LD12 I think?), and as such I have a whole new setup. New house, new computer, new desk. Behold:

Keeyai's Desk

Also, I’m bringing back THE JUG:

THE JUG - Pre-Compo

THE JUG - Pre-Compo

Here is what I’m using this time around:

  • Python (as always)
  • Pygame or Pyglet + Rabbyt (compatibility vs power)
  • Python-Ogre (if I want to flush all chances of finishing down the toilet)
  • PyScripter (my IDE of choice)
  • SFXR & Musagi (thanks Dr. Petter)
  • TortoiseSVN and VisualSVNServer (version control ftw)
  • Chronolapse (yay timelapses)
  • Reminder ( countdown + reminders to blog)
  • Audacity (in case I get frisky with some recording)
  • IRC (for maximum distraction)

T-2… Too early to play The Final Countdown on all speakers yet? :)

The Cage

The Cage - Standing Desk

Here’s my workspace pic. It’s a standing desk I made out of a standard rack shelving unit.

Yes, I’m so hard core, I make games standing up.

Anyway, time to get food…

OK you guys. I don’t know how you did it. I said I wouldn’t, but here it is in it’s beautifully messy glory. Sporting my desktop + eee. I think I’m just going to leave the eee on IRC to not distract myself so much. *Cough*

Cool to see that someone has one of those waterproof keyboards! I could never get the hang of typing on it though, so I roll it up and use it for rare text-entry on gaming consoles when necessary.

Notice of intent

I am Tom 7. I will make a game from scratch for Ludum Dare 17.

I do declare that I might use my spartan SDLML lib if I program in SML. But I will probably jazz out in Flash, in which case I may reuse some of the basic infrastructure and physics libraries I wrote for you keep dying (src). Both are GPL. All gameplay and content will be new.

Intent: I have it.

This is Tinkergirl, signing up for her second Ludum Dare. First attempt was quite abortive. Again, I’ll be trying to use XNA, SketchUp and Paint! Good luck, everyone.

Ah, a fellow XNA user. I may not be taking part this time, and even if I do I probably won’t be using XNA due to lack of time, but all the best anyway :)

Interesting. Somewhat annoying it doesn’t refresh on its own, not that I want to stare at you real time or anything.

It looks like the cool thing to do is post your workstation, so I shall.

As an added bonus, enjoy the semi-recursive imagery.

I’m pretty busy this weekend, but I intend to participate. I’ll be using Flash, and reusing the same basic template as I used last time (some basic scratch written UI and input stuff, simple blitting, and sound).

As an interesting twist, this Ludum Dare I won’t have internet access for the first few hours of my effort. I’ll be working blind, and hopefully I’ll be able to apply whatever I come up with to the theme once I find out what that is :) .
