Hey I like your gamesI Law of Nature was a fun game and so was The Fighter Diet (I single-handedly managed both waiters). I do composing and sound design – would you be interested in using audio for your LD 35 game? Feel free to check out my work at PaulSimMusic.com. Let me know!

I’m in!

Finally after a year my schedule should allow for a Ludum Dare attempt.

I’ll be using at least Haxe and OpenFL, and the left-over library I worked on during the last time I participated.

Let’s have fun!

Oh, forgot to mention… I’m in…

I’m going to use the normal stuff:

1) libgameapi, sdl, libfreetype, opengl for the 3d stuff
2) g++, clang, (emscripten) for compiling it
3) my own game builder app(called editor) for designing the models
4) emacs for editing text files
5) sdl_mixer for mp3 playing
6) chronolapse for making videos
7) ludumdare (the web site) for getting reviews..
8) #ludumdare in afternet for sharing experiences in irc

I’M IN!

Not really shure why am I posting this, nobody reads it anyway))

Gonna try to make something cool looking) I’m graphics designer from Russia. Althroug I was programming for about 5 years you know 2-3 days is a REALLY small amount of time… Hope it will at least look attractive :3

Programming: Java – LWJGL 3 + JOML for math + my small weird framework (ill post it soon).
Graphics: Illustrator/Photoshop or i can make it all generated procedurally wich is better))
Sound: probably Ableton, i dont know anything else btw.
What else do I need? I guess it’s all.

GL HF!

Not quite a full-fledged game engine, but a really nice framework! :)

I’m in!

Second time participating, hope the theme Gods will be kind to me. :)

I will definitely be using:

  • Engine: Unity3D;
  • 3D models: Blender / SketchUp;
  • 2D sprites/textures/etc Pixelmator;
  • Music & SFX: GarageBand and AS3SFXR.

Depending on the theme, I might use the field-of-view solution from Sebastian Lague’s tutorials (https://github.com/SebLague/Field-of-View)

I will license fonts from https://www.fontsquirrel.com

Our page for LD35

Hey participants, it’s Ben here. I wanted to say that I’m super hyped for Ludum Dare, and have set up some things on our website. I have made a page on our website where I’ll be  putting links to all of the posts and info that were gonna be making for this Ludum Dare. This is the page: www.toasted-games.com/LD35. This won’t be the only place that we upload our info, though. Everything we write will also be put up on this blog, and our personal blog on our website. We only made the webpage for the people who want to see everything we post right away. So basically, no one.

Ah whatever, if I get 1 view on that page, it’ll be worth it. So make my dreams come true and go there, you monster! (Heh, just kidding. But really though, look at it.) It contains important information about stream times (because we’ll be streaming as much as we can), and updates!

That’s all,

Ben.

LD35

Hopefully in for my 7th LD. Helps me improving my creative solving skills :)

Using as usual:

  • Unity 5 + Visual Studio 2015
  • Paint.NET

Looking forward for some impressive games, again. Good luck to all.

My Phaser template for the compo

So, as I’m going with Phaser (again), I decided to get my simple template together actually before the compo and then not waste hours on end trying to get transpiling and all the other things to work 😀

If anyone else is in need of a Phaser Template that allows you to use ES6 and comes with some Phaser states (Boot, Preload, Mainmenu and Game) and a single cursor-key-movable sprite, then here you go!

2D vs 3D

I have been wondering lately, what are advantages and disadvantages of 2D and 3D games. For some reason all my previous Ludum Dare games are 2D. Just because of that, I will make a 3D game this time. These are my thoughts on 2D and 3D differences, please add yours as well.

3D:

  1. It’s harder to make basic stuff like player controller and camera control (if  you are not using Unity or similar programs).
  2. It takes more time to make appealing graphics (depends on style honestly, but it should be harder in general because of extra dimension).
  3. There are more game mechanics possibilities.

2D:

  1. Smoother game look and less unexpected camera point views or glitches.
  2. Takes less time to make a game.
  3. Animations takes much less time to make, therefore 2D animations are better.

I feel like I am missing a lot of stuff, but I just could not figure out what it is.

It seems like majority of games in Ludum Dare are 2D, I wonder if that’s because of lack of practice or personal preference.

I make 2D games, because I can’t make 3D models, and I’m a decent pixel artist, so I’ve just stuck with making 2D games.

3D games present both a massive challenge in terms of controls / setup / asset creation and a challenge in terms of sharing them (downloading random .exe’s is scary, running in a virtual machine is annoying and/or unfeasible, WebGL versions of say, Unity games tend to be unreliable or buggy, web browsers are doing their best to block the old Unity web plugin).

I agree that 3D games are time consuming ( and 3D models). I also just hate using Unity…

I can’t see how 2D animation would take less time than 3D animation. When you make a 3D model, that’s it. Now you just need to animate it. When you make a 2D character you’ve got to animate it by hand, none of that flash auto-moving bulls**t (if you want to end up with something that can compete against 3D animation I mean). And even if 2D animation took less time to make, that doesn’t mean it’s better than 3D animation. for example we can try to compare a 3D N64 game like The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time with a 2D game of the modern age (to try and make the teams comparable) like The Banner Saga or Darkest Dungeon. Could you say any is better than the other? 3D animation and 2D animation can’t be compared because they don’t fit in the same game mechanics and give a different feel.

I have done both, many times. I can say without a doubt if you you want a more complete game for LudumDare go with 2D.

All warmed up and nowhere to go

Warmup weekend game complete!

Ready to go for the real jam goin’ down.

You put your left foot in…

Woohoo, third LD. Might be a bit tight for time but worst case scenario I’ll whip something up, or just do the Jam instead.

Excellent tools I’ll be using

  • (Mostly) Native Javascript + HTML5 Canvas
  • Basic 2D Collisions (Maybe, maybe not)
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator (Maybe)
  • Mic + Various household objects + Win 8 sound recorder default software (Assuming I have time for audio)
  • Bad formatting in this post due to a bad copy and paste job from the last LD (Now last 2 LDs)
  • A crappy sense of humour (This one still applies)
  • Notepad
  • Sublime Text 2 (Everybody’s favorite hipster flavoured text editor)

I’m in

This is my second time participating…

I will use:

  • Probably c++ (or Java if I change my mind)
  • Visual Studio Community 2015 or Eclipse Mars
  • This basic 2D game engine (again, either c++ or java)
  • Paint.NET & Photoshop
  • Fruity Loops

Good luck to everybody!

Compo and Unity Assets

Hello everybody!

I read through the rules, and did not come away with a clear understanding of leveraging Unity Assets.  Specifically using assets such as uFPS and ProBuilder, and *NOT* models, audio, art, etc…

I know they are fair game for the Jam.  How about the Compo?  Since assets such as uFPS and ProBuilder are commercial products and thus have licensing restrictions, they would not be able to be shared with the source of the game upon conclusion of the Compo.

Just looking for feedback so I can plan my toolset for this weekend; any thoughts/comments would be appreciated!

With the proliferation of asset stores and market places, it may be a good idea to specifically address them in the rules.

i personally wouldn’t and I think if you are asking the question you probably think you shouldn’t either

We’re In

I and my friend will participate. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong:

  • We’ll participate in the 72 hour Jam.
  • Did the date move? I’m sure we had more time left before… oh well.

We’ll be using VisualStudio C# monogame for the code, LMMS for the music, GIMP and Pixly for the graphics and BFXR for the sfx.

I’m in

I’m back for my 5th Ludum Dare. Have taken off work Monday and Tuesday of next week so I’m ready for compo or jam! Haven’t decided yet. Going to use:

Pickle

Photoshop CS 5

Sound Designer – Looking for a team! New here, but not new to the industry.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working as a full-time Quality Assurance Analyst on AAA games for 8 years, and I’m starting to shift my efforts into Sound Design. I’ve got a professional education in Audio Engineering and Recording Arts and I’m looking to build my portfolio in order to fuel a complete career shift very soon. I just learned  about Ludum Dare from another local Sound Designer, and would love to get involved!

Since I’m new here, I have no idea how other go about getting connected with teammates, but the only other person I know on here is another Sound Designer and technically competition :) I made a post on /r/ludumdare and figured I’d make another here to see if anyone is looking for a talented Sound Designer for this weekend’s upcoming jam.

If you want to know more, feel free to check out my website and send me an email from there!

Looking forward to getting involved and helping to create some awesome content!
