Ludum Dare 57 April 5–8, 2025

Missed last LD, excited for this one!

I missed the last LD - the first one since I started with LD43. I missed it because my dog got sick and died quite suddenly that weekend. She has featured prominently as a character in a couple of my jam games:

I miss her so much, but I think she'll continue on as a character in my future jam games as well. Her goofy smelly legacy lives on! I'm really looking forward to creating another game this weekend!

In It, I Am , or Will Be

It’s That Time Again!

Ludum Dare 57 is here after all, and while it might interfere with my birthday, I can simply delay those celebrations a week; I have more important matters to attend to, there's a game to make!

Much like the last seven LDs I will be putting together a text-based game in Twine, and the theme will determine whether I'll go for something narrative or a thing with a more more systemsy flavor.

Dress Up Your Desktop

Traditions being traditions, I had no choice but to traditize and make a wallpaper for the event. HD and 4K options available!

Sadly I will have to go to work on Monday, while I usually prefer to make use of all three days of the jam. This never helps my game, but it is what it is.

Good luck to everyone partaking, see you in the trenches!

It's so good to be back

For the first time in ages I have no other obligations and can actually make a game! Feels soo good!

What technology will I be using? Most likely Godot, though because I'm trying to polish my UE skills for work-related stuff, it may also be a thing that will happen.

See you during the weekend!

Looking for an artist

Hi everyone,

we are a team of 3 (programmer, writer, musician) that is currently short an artist. We have made plenty of Jam games before and I think they're pretty neat, so I'm confident we could also make something cool together this time.

If you want to get a taste of our work, check out one of the following:

Hikari’s Journey 光の旅 — the umbral world --- Story-driven multi-genre game(s) --- #46 overall, #11 innovation, #5 mood Hikari’s Journey 光の旅 — the umbral world

Binary Blasterz --- 1-bit rhythmic bullet hell Binary Blasterz

Abyssal Accessory --- Tamagotchi Visual Novel Abyssal Accessory

If you're interested, just leave a comment here with some your work or contact me on Discord, my username is junber

Looking for Sound designer/Musician for LD57

Hello! We are a team of two Dutch students (GMT+2). The artist is studying game art and specialises in 2D. I am studying mathematics and game programming.

We are looking for a sound/music designer to complete our team of 3. Everyone in our team participates in the game design as well! DM me on discord #arceryz !

Ready... Set... GO!

Excited to join with a team of two.

Going for something very simple yet fun.

Enjoy the ride!

I'm in!

I'm in for another LudumDare! Conditions should be good for me to go "all out" again this time, so I'm going to try really hard to make an excellent game. Also, if I finish this entry, it will be my 25th *(finished compo!) LudumDare entry. Maybe that makes it lucky... ! I hope you have luck too. Good luck!

NOTES

🧙‍♂️ IF COMPLETED, THIS WILL BE MY 25th FINISHED COMPO TITLE. ✨

🧠 I WILL NOT USE ANY AI TOOLS. ALL ART/MUSIC/SCENARIO/SFX/ETC WILL BE CREATED BY ME OR WITH “OLD-SCHOOL”-STYLE GENERATORS. ANY AI INFLUENCE WILL BE ACCIDENTAL (SOME SOFTWARE COMPANY SNEAKING SOMETHING INTO MY TOOLS, FOR INSTANCE.)

Another Jam

This will be my sixth time participating in LD. As usual, I'll be participating in the Compo this time. Last time I took part was LD55, and the game I made that time was actually the one that turned out to be the most successful of my compo games (though a bit limited by being local multiplayer only as I didn't have time to do AI)

Mana Tactics - My LD55 game

As for this time, I'll be using Godot again, sticking with the basic GDScript set up as it makes publishing to the web simple and I feel that these days you basically need to do a web game to get ratings as people are increasingly on guard for malware and so a lot of people avoid running native games. Last time I spent a lot of time during the Jam actually learning Godot for the first time, but I feel I have a better hand on it these days. Other tools include Krita for making art

I've been learning how to do isometric sprites this week, so I'll probably end up doing an isometric game of some sort. I've also never quite managed to get around to adding much in the way of sfx or bgm before, so I might experiment with some sound tools also on Friday, as I have some time off before the jam.

Beyond that... I think I need to see the themes that make it to the final round of voting before I really brainstorm what type of game I'll make.

Fight

I guess "deeper and deeper" type themes has been done twice before? SO remember that with "depths" and "layers" and "bottomless". I'm sad "fragmented" didn't make it :(

I do like "Salvage", "Plant the seed," and "Decay" :D

Had to be strict this time.

And here we are. I like a lot of these themes but I needed to be strict and go with the ones that I can on the spot come up with ideas for, hopefully if it’s a theme I have no plan for the RNGesus grants me inspiration IMG_8305.png

Voting Final Round

Lot of fun possibilities but a few themes were a bit too limiting imo. Even wild magic, which I could have enjoyed making a game around, I didn't find any variety in. Garden is too much like harvest from 2 years ago, but with less options.

That said, I'm probably a hypocrite as trade is somewhat limiting but the theme is interesting to me and still has multiple interpretations.

First LD

I'm open for tips cuz it's my first LD and I have no idea what to make except something to do with milk(dunno why) which as far as ive seen, not a theme

I'm really vibing with Wild Magic

It sounds like something powerful and uncontrollable, but more predictable than Chaos Magic. Also, it implies forces of nature

What I'm not vibing with is anything hard-surface. It's really Hard for me to work around those

Final Round

Hopefully I won't have to 'Wave' goodbye to the 'Doors' simply because they were 'Out of Order'.

I am really hoping for Out of Order to write a nice puzzle game. Single Screen, High Score kind of thing.

Final Themes!

final round.png I really love the final theme! Thank you all, you guys chose such amazing themes. I have so many ideas for so many of them and can"t wait to bring them to life! (PS: Pleeease don"t let it be Decay, I feel like I really can"t handle that one orz)

Getting back to game dev after a a while

A lot has happened since I last made a game. I completed my Masters, I became an assistant professor and even teaching some students basics of game dev. With added responsibilities I feel like it will be hard to get back to game jam, given I have an event to organize this Friday and Saturday. Any tips for me to get back to it with a "bang". (I am asking more of because, the last game jam I tried was brackeys game jam and I fell sick throughout the week so could not finish the game I wanted to make)
