Getting started with GameMaker (2025)

GameMakeremLogo/emBlackTransparent.png

As the name suggests, GameMaker is a tool for making video games. It's free for non-commercial use, such as taking part in game jams like Ludum Dare . Games built in GameMaker can be exported for PC and mobile devices, the web (HTML5), and to game consoles (if you're licensed to do so).

GameMaker supports both drag-and-drop visual programming with GML Visual and traditional programming using GML Code. The GML Code language is an original language with a dialect similar to JavaScript.

Setting up

You can download GameMaker for free here: https://gamemaker.io/en/download :arrow_left:

Promos

Hey guys

is it possible to change my nickname somehow

Procedural tools

Heya folks!

I understand that generative AI things are not cool for making graphics for Ludum Dare, but what about tools like Tilesetter?

I mean, I have to draw all the graphics that it will be mixing, but I still wanted to make sure this won't rule me out of the graphics category.

I'm not an artist, so doing the graphics will be a big time sink for me and if I can save time with Tilesetter, I'd probably like to do that. I still kinda like the art that I do, so if tilesetter is not ok, I'll just do it all manually.

I'm in. (Again)

last LDJam I unfortunately had some issues I had to attend to right after the jam started and was not able to participate. Just like that time though it'll be my first time actually participating in a LDJam and not just observing the entries. I've learned quite a bit since then too, brushing up on network and i/o.

Happy jamming all.

My stack and tools!

Hi everybody! I'll join the compo again, using exactly the same stack as last time:

It's a risky stack for a jam since I need to implement a lot from scratch, but I really enjoy the process. Last time went "okish," so I'm hoping for another "okish" result this time around!

Good luck everyone, and enjoy the jam!

Definitely pico-8

I can't believe how fast it is to create a fun game in pico-8, this is a nobrainer. I'm in!

Download all Results from a Jam?

I'd like to know if it's possible to take all the results from a Ludum Dare event (either as json or csv) to use it for charts (mostly to compare my progress between this jam and the past one when this jam is over).

I also remember there being an website to do this, but it was outdated and I can't find it anymore.

I'm new to this

How do we create a team ? Do we have to wait for the jam to actually start ?

Doors ?

If the theme doors wins remember old arcade game with a lot of doors like ELEVATOR ACTION for inspiration !

I'm in - hopefully

I'm definitely trying to do the compo, but due to some family issues, I might not have the time. Fingers crossed!

In case I get to spend my weekend compoing, my tools are the same I always use:

  • Godot

  • GIMP / Blender / Inkscape, depending on what the idea requires

  • Psycle for music and sound effects

  • Cakewalk for post-processing music and sfx

Ludum Dare 57 - I'm Here with UEFN

So I'm in for this Ludum Dare but with a major constraint... Creating the game in UEFN ( Unreal Editor for Fortnite ). This might make some things easier... But I'll have to find a lot of workarounds to do what I want.

I have many things to do during the week-end so I'm really not sure to be able to respect the deadline.

LD57 - My Tools

  • Unreal Editor for Fortnite
  • Visual Studio Code
  • Gimp
  • Blender

Joining the Jam as a two person team

It's been almost a decade since I've done one of these, Danny here, I'll be doing the code and Holly will be on art. Hopefully something interesting comes out...

Hypeee

So hyped for this LD. One of my fav themes is Doors: simple, effective, a lot of potential!

Btw since last LD I started making Bleached, my first Steam game: a story about colors and emotions. While you're here, perhaps wishlist Bleached on Steam!

A Game Jam newbie

Hi there!

I just wanted to say hello since it's my first game jam ever! I did a few projects over the years, although most of them are unfinished husks. I studied English philology with game creation (weird combo, I know) and I fell in love with programming (even if I'm not the best at it.

My engine of choice is GameMaker and regarding the rest - it's up for me to discover.

Thanks and hope to see you on the "battlefield"!

Good luck to all of you!
