LD23 April 20–23, 2012

I’m in

My virginal entry! Don’t be too rough. Seems you’re supposed to use this as an opportunity to declare what you’ll be using for the Compo.

Engine: HaxePunk (a port of FlashPunk to the haXe programming language.) / NME for cross platform compilation (required by HaxePunk).

Editor: Sublime Text 2 (Evaluation version). This brings up a question…which I’ll ask later in the post.

Additional Libraries: Something to port Ogmo maps into haXe…will either need to find one or I’ll create my own and post it here. Switched to a TMX loader for haXe. Might also use this GUI library.

Graphics: Kolourpaint for the simple stuff / GIMP for the less simple stuff.

Sounds: Honestly don’t know; probably sfxr.

Additional Stuff: Ogmo Editor. Never used it, but whatever, it’ll be fun to learn. Looks like Ogmo made the dastardly move to XNA. I spent some time trying to get it to work on my Linux machine, and at least got it to compile using MonoGame, but cut my losses when I hit some runtime errors (not a big fan of MonoGame). Tiled it is!

So, my question. I know that the license of an open source editor has no effect on anything you produce from it (GPL or otherwise). But for something like Sublime Text 2, which isn’t open source and has a licensed version and a free (as in beer) evaluation version, would something I make using the evaluation version not be allowed to be sold? I doubt anything I make over this weekend will be worth a dime, but just musing here.

EDIT: Edits galore!

The content you create with the program should legally be completely separate from the program used to create it AFIK. If it’s a text editor, how’re they gonna know that some random .txt file was made with their program anyway? There’s absolutely no way to enforce that kind of restriction let alone any business sense it it. <_<

Have a free level editor

SWF • Description on DeviantArt

I made a little level editor a while ago, and now I polished up and released it as a SWF. It’s not super amazing, but it’s completely free and very simple and quick to use.

I remember someone posting about using Note Pad to design levels on a previous Ludum Dare, and I remembered how tedious it is to design anything worthwhile within a text editor, so I’m mainly releasing this so that no-one ever has to do that.

So if you know anyone that’s likely to use a Note Pad or any other basic text program for designing graphical 2D levels, show them this!

Nifty. I usually write my own in-game editor, but I’ve been known to use DAME as well. There are a couple of other options on the tools page (check the sidebar). I can vouch for TileEd as a decent package. I’ve heard good things about Ogmo too. Sometimes though, notepad or somesuch is just easier because you don’t have to deal with strange formats other programs output. I’ve heard a number of people create a level from a bitmap, and draw that in paint, too.

Rock!

Phil from Dirigo games here.  Declaring my intent to take part!  Can’t wait!

Paper beats rock. Care for best of three?

(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

I’m *puts on sunglasses*…in!

So yeah, I’m entering for the second time now. Last time in December was so much fun so I’m obviously entering again ^^

The LD22 game was kind of a failure, even though I guess it was kind of fun in its own way, lol.

I hope this game will turn out much better ^^

Language: C++

Tools: Visual Studio 2010, PhotoShop, Magix Music Maker and Bfxr

Libraries: SDL, SDL_image, SDL_ttf, SDL_mixer, openGL

I hope the theme will be resouce gathering :D

Good luck to you all :)

Participating as well!

Hello there!

First time posting here in Ludum Dare. I was like a tourist past year, checking and playing some games created in the events. But finally i decide to take a new step and participate for the first time. I’m excited to be part of this , as well as all of you xD

What i search here are only two things: knowledge and comrades. Knowledge in development to be a better game designer (and art, programming, sound, writing and so on…). And the other one, comrades, is not like “Hey, you are good. Let’s make a game together”. No. Is to interact and make friends who love games, have the passion of make those games that we like to see a reality and to share our knowledge and doubts in game development.

So, my tools are:

  • Pencil and paper
  • Game Maker Standard
  • GIMP
  • Bfxr
  • PXtone (if i learn to make something simple xD)

And the last thing i want to say is “Let’s make games”.

Thanks.

An idea for a rule change

Hey there,

I had an idea for a rule change considering the Compo.

Many people are good at one thing, while bad at others.
Game Designers may have very good stories, but buggy games, or games made in higher level programs like GameMaker.
Game Programmers may have solid games, in well-established low-level programs like C++, but are usually very poor at making graphics.
Artists may have very nice art, but will need to use programs like Game-, RPG- or Adventure Maker.

Here’s my suggestion:
When submitting your game, you are presented by a number of checkboxes:

  • Graphics,
  • Coding,
  • Music/Sound.

(Perhaps more, but these 3 seem most important)

If you check the Graphics checkbox, you abide to the rule that all graphics are made by you. It also means people judging you can give you a grade for graphics.
If you check the Coding checkbox, you abide to a new rule not to use programs like Game Maker or Quest3D or Flash (Which programs are banned can be debatable) to make your game, and only use a real coding language and at most a basic library. This includes a grading for coding.
If you check the Music/Sound checkbox, you abide to the rule that all music and sounds are made by you. It also means people judging you can give you a grade for Music or sounds.

For each checkbox, not checking it means more lenient rules, but also not being graded on the subject at hand. This would allow coders to use spritesets, unless they want to make their own programmer art (I’m all for programmer art by the way), and people not to bother with making their own sounds and music if they don’t want to.

For the Overall grading, I’d say put any opted-out grading to a standard 1. This way, the overall champ will still be the one making the best package, but it will allow people put off by the strict rules on graphics and sounds to make and show a game as well.

This is mostly just a brainstorm, and a post ment to set up a debate. I’m more then happy to abide by the rules, and I will, but I hope this post will at least make some people think and wonder whether this would be better or not.

And before someone mentions it: Yes, anyone could join the Jam instead. But the Jam hasn’t the same magic as the Compo.

A quick-and-dirty screen grab calculator

http://preview.tinyurl.com/blfjfgp

I’m a big fan of Instacalc, and for my first LD entry I’m planning on using Chronolapse to record a timelapse of my efforts. So naturally, I threw together this handy calculator for determining what time (in seconds) to set my screen capture rate at and a rough estimate of what the resulting folder size will be (in GB) in the end. If you happen to find this calculator handy, feel free to adjust the parameters to suit your needs.

I’m in. Raaaaaaa!

Had a warm up attempt a few weeks ago by creating Wampus’s Basement. Now I’m excited about trying Ludum Dare Compo for real (and alone). Feel its going to be tense but fun. Next time I’m hoping to join a game jam. For now, some details:-

IDE: GLBasic. Simple and adaptable. I’m hoping (not guaranteeing) to make whatever game results from LD as widely compatible with different platforms as I can so this is an ideal tool.

Art: Photoshop and/or Inkscape.

Sound: Sfxr. Might use some CoolEditing for added impact.

Music: If I have the time; SunVox, Open ModPlug Tracker and/or FL Studio. If I don’t have the time then maybe some auto-generated tunes with possibly maybe some polishing.

Other tools I likes: Notepad++, paper notepad, HxD and my collection of calculators.

Wishing you all good luck with your games.

Psyched for first #LD48

After following the last Ludum Dare and seeing all the amazing stuff people built, I am gonna try to come up with an entry myself this time. I am gonna use the following tools:

Language: HTML5/CSS/JavaScript (will use html5boilerplate.com and possibly a JS Game library like  EaselJS or melonJS)

Graphics: Gimp, Inkscape (I suck at Graphics so Photoshop would do me no good anyways…)

IDE: Aptana Studio (I do a lot of Java development for a living so I am used to Eclipse)

Soud/Music: Sfxr (don’t really have a clue how to create sounds/music so this is going to be interesting)

Goals for me are learn something new, have fun creating the game and enter something fairly complete (menu, instructions, sound, …). If someone else happens to like whatever I can come up with even better :)

Can’t wait for the theme announcement!

I’m in…

for third time : “I’m in”.

3D: Blender 2.62
2D and textures: Gimp 2.6
Engine: Panda3d 1.8/Python.
Music: www.inudge.net

Other: I’ll take the pictures with a photo camera during the week-end for make the textures.
(I dont know if this sentence is correct)

I’m so excited…

Busy for part of the weekend, but giving it my best shot. Succeed or fail it’s always fun taking part in a ludum dare
weapons of choice.
Construct 2
Graphics gale/Pixothello/mypaint
Audacity Bfxr

First timer here and a game dev student who has looked with awe at the previous ld48’s :3

IDE : Flash, coda
Sounds: cfxr
Images: Adobe Photoshop

I’m in

I’m in for the 3rd time, and after the major fail of last LD (didn’t finish anything) I will take my time to prepare properly (less beer, more code should be a good start).

As usual I’ll likely be using C++ and SDL with my own code-base, and BlitzMax will be my fallback.
Rest of my toolset will be GIMP for art, SFXR for sound and TuxGuitar for music (if I have enough time to compose anything that is).

Good luck everyone, and lets have a blast!

For the second time, I’m in!

Have been extremely busy lately, so a lot of you haven’t seen me in IRC (NightmareApps).  Here are some details of what I’ll be working with:

IDE: Eclipse! What must I say? My (and a billion other peoples) favorite IDE. Works great, gots all my custom keybindings, and is Android friendly!

Library: LibGDX! I’ve never used it for rapid development, so lets hope I remember how to get started and don’t get stuck on anything.

Art: Paint.net and PyxelEdit if I need to do any pixeling. Thanks Danik (twitter: @Danik112)!!

Sound/Music: Oh yeah… Sound – I’ll try to remember to do that this time 😉 FL Studio for sure.

Others:

– StickyNote virtual sticky notes (comes with Win7) to mark down all my ideas

ChronoLapse to make timelapse of my 48 hours of coding

Dropbox/FileZilla for deployment and testing

Good luck everyone! Follow @NightmareApps on Twitter or Facebook if you’re interested following my progress during the LD, and in general.

I’m in post

Well, it’s my first time, so be gentle.

I’ll use Blender, Unity, Audacity, Bfxr, GIMP, Inkscape and who knows what more.

I’m In!

After “Escape” threw me for a loop, I’ve vowed to actually build and release something (good?) for LD23.
  • Dev Tools: g++ and mingw32-make, Sublime Text 2, Notepad++, 7zip (for packaging), Python (for utilities)
  • Libraries: the C++ Standard Library/the Standard Template Library, SDL, SDL_mixer, SDL_image, SDL_ttf, Chipmunk, OpenGL, SimpleINI (or similar)
  • Sound: bfxr for sound effects, and famitracker for music
  • Graphics: Paint.NET, GIMP, or possibly the Pyxel Editor, and of course, OpenGL

I’m in.

Java, libgdx, paint.net, sfxr, Ethereal Dialpad.

I’m in

I tried to join the previous LD, but was too busy.

Language : Java

Graphics : Gimp

IDE : Jcreator , simple and easy to package everything together

Sound: I don’t really know what I’ll be doing.

I’m not planning to start out with any engines.

I’m somewhat in

Well, I’ve got a busy weekend, but I don’t think I can miss the 10th anniversary. I’ve been doing ludumdare since the beginning (well, not counting LD0).  My basecode and previous entries which I will probably cannibalize can be found at the usual place.

It looks like I’ll probably only have one full day, Sunday, and it will be a short one at that since the compo ends. So I’ll try to keep it simple. Also, I’m going to make it 3d. (See what I did there?)

Good luck everyone.

Third time lucky? – Im in! LD23

Yep, this will be my third Ludum Dare – and after never submitting a game to the previous 2 I participated in, I’m hoping this will be the one!

I have a ton of homework going on for Uni this week which was making an attempt at this LD seem unlikely, but most of it is due Friday or much later next week. So I should go into the weekend comfortably and ready for this LD. I also managed to somehow score the entire weekend free from shifts at work, don’t ask me how in the world that happened, I’m still confused about it working out so well.

The only issue is that I don’t have a computer/laptop to work on. My ‘current’ one died about a week ago. Thankfully I was quick to order a new one, which should arrive tomorrow. So it should be a mad scramble to get everything installed and running as Ill be needing.

The kind of game I’m leaning towards this time round is a dark and atmospheric horror/exploration based game, so if a theme matches that I’ll be set since I have a few fitting ideas already. Between now and the weekend though, I’ll be trying to think up some other game ideas as well – to avoid that dangerous moment when the countdown reaches 0 and you have no idea what in the world to make…

Ill more than likely be using BGE (Blender Game Engine) again as well, along with my other usual tools (python for programming, gimp or photoshop for 2D work, audacity for audio etc) but depending on the theme I might end up doing a 8bit style game with openGL instead (been keen to work on a game like that for a while now)

Finally, since I live in South Australia, Ill at some point make the effort to head to Adelaide and attend attend meetup on the Adelaide Uni campus (as if I don’t spend enough time there already). Will be good to work on some games in a more social environment than the dark, dusty corner of my room.

So, my next post will be at the T-48 hours mark I imagine!
