PRAY FOR TESLA — Tutorial Update

POSTER2.png At first I thought it would be interesting for player to explore how the game works by interaction, but it didn't worked well because the game was balanced to be hardcore and players are forced to be very tactical from the start.

Thats why I decided to update the game post with this detailed tutorial. So if you missed some mechanics, you can try to experiment with structures again :)

CTRL FRK is an experimental compo game about teamwork and control.

I really wanted to make it speak through game systems and the way how you play it.

Accidental Existential

ld.png

Hello guys! :)

This is my first post on #LD41 so you'll be the first ones to check out the game.

I made a three short stories (or a single solid story) each one combined different poles of game genres.

Hope you'll find it fun to explore and to think about :)

Each story is unexpected mix of game genres.

Don't want to spoil first impressions so hope this teaser is enough :)

Postmortem Part 1 - Brainstorm and dramatic cutoff

Hi, this is a postmortem for ACCIDENTAL EXISTENTIAL This part doesn't contain any spoilers, so go ahead even if you haven't played it yet.

main.png

I started with two initial motives

  1. I don't want to do anything like I did before (mean conceptual).
  2. I want to create something really cool and weird with this Theme - genres should be incompeatible on the highest level possible, so even reading it out loud would be fun.

So I came up with idea to make not a single game but a set of mini-games each one mixes 2 truly incompatible genres. Fun. Fast. Grotesque. Ironic.

I made a list with ~10 nice ideas. Explored gameplay features. And even prepeared graphic assets!

Here are some of those concepts

Chess + Drag racing du2.png

Dress Up + Stealth du.png

Bullet Hell + Text Adventure (tragicomedy where you got into actual hell as an actual bullet that killed someone) du4.png

Educational Game + Unreliable Narrator du3.png

Aaaand here comes the twist.

Nothing of this made it to the final game.

What?!

I prototyped gameflow and realized two things: 1. I can't make that many games in time so they will be polished enough. 2. Whole experience doesn't feel consistent because games don't work with each other. There were no synergy, no underlying idea that holds it together.

So I started reviewing everything once again and cutting off concepts one by one (believe me it was tough!!).

When there were only 3 concepts left I realized - I'm onto something deep...

End of day one.

Postmortem Part 2 - Art and Mind shift

Hi, this is second part of a postmortem for ACCIDENTAL EXISTENTIAL

→ Go to Part 1 - Brainstorm and dramatic cutoff

main2.png

There are 3 different stories in the game. Each one is unique genres mashup so is visual layout.

I'll tell the story behind art of the one of these mini-games.

Art

One of the ideas was adult game but for kids. I didn't had much time because I threw most of the assets away, so I decided to make it different. Fast and childish like a kids drawing.

Assets for this layout. Mostly done in one take :) post2-1.png

Paper texture made with old vynil record. post2-2.png

Artstyle like that isn't that time consuming and (more importantly) perfectly contrasts with the heavy adult theme behind it!

Also there is a visual contrast with two other stories that has more grayish realistic look so the game gets an interesting visual rythm as well.

Jam Conclusion - Goals

It was the first time when I purposely tried to communicate not a single message with the game, but a space of ideas to interpret.

*And it worked! *

I can't explain how happy I was after reading first reviews. You guys got it and in a such different ways! Some see it straight and heavy, some get it very personal, some read dark humour or ironic meta on life and industry.

Mind shift

This is a mind shift for me personaly. All of my life before I was sure that piece of art should be about clear message or experience communication.

Before I'd rather be upset if players won't get it the way I put it there. And now it's just amazing to see what players will build with this forms and how personal they will make it.

This is no longer a dictate of the meaning but the real co-creation. It requires more effort from both dev and the player but it totaly pays off.

Thank you :)

The first part contains some early concepts and arts that didn't make it to the final game.

This gamejam changed a lot for me personally and I wrote about it in the second part.
