ICARUS!

zombies + donuts = what?

So, this is my first LD and most certainly not my last!  I’ll just make this a quick update as I’ve already posted a big chunk of exposition on my own dev blog http://dev.chadgodsey.com/

I’ve got most of the code and gameplay working.  I figure I’ll spend tomorrow adding extra flair and sprucing stuff up.  Or maybe just go outside…

Nice! A wall of zombies?

Walla Zombies! – Final

Added in some particle effects and a small melee attack, making this game complete!  It could probably use a few more levels, but that won’t happen inside a two-day window.  Anyway, here is the OS X app, and a larger package with source and the Ruby all-in-one installer for Windows.  For you Linux dudes, I added some small comments on how to get Ruby+Gosu going (nothing tricky or even hard).  Just check the README for instructions and info.  Enjoy!

Both download links lead to the same file, which appears to be for OSX. I see no way of getting that to run on windows.

sorry, updated the link to what it should have been

easier Windows version

Big thanks to jlnr for rubyscript2exe-ing my game (latest gem update killed the good old packager)

Here is the new simple Window version (no need to install Ruby or download my huge zip)

I’m not sure how my previous Windows link got mangled, here it is again for anyone interested.  This one includes source, though they all do in one form or another.  You can check the Resources inside the OS X app for the source and the rs2e basically tars up the scripts and unzips when ran, though that doesn’t really enable you to check the source that way 😉

Double Dare!

Hopefully I can find time to participate in this competition.  It will be my second time being involved(participated in #14).  Supposedly there are social events I am expected to attend over the weekend, but we’ll see how that turns out!

Last time I used Ruby + Gosu, though this time I’m thinking of using C++ and Gosu with the framework I’ve been working on with some friends.  You can find the framework here, if interested.

http://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/MUGE

Turns out it is somewhat similar to ippa’s, except in C++ and mine includes a workflow for level design using arbitrary sprites via JSON configuration.

For music and sound I’ll be using the trustworthy GarageBand and Dr. Petter’s sfxr again.  For graphics, likely I will suffice with Photoshop.

See you on IRC and happy dev’ing!

Late Breakfast

Delicious Bunches

Delicious Bunches

I’m all set with my music, laptop for chatting, and a nice clear screen for code!

Plus, there’s nothing like honey bunches of oat to start the day!

Tech of Choice

This will be my second Ludum Dare, given I don’t have to run off like I did for 15.  I’m a starting indie developer so be sure to keep an eye on us http://www.blitthis.com/

This time around I’ll be using MUGE (My Unnamed Game Engine) which is a collection of C++ extensions to Gosu.  As for music, I’m thinking of using WolframTones, if you’re not familiar with this it generates music based off of cellular automata and some of it isn’t half bad.  Of course I’ll be using the de-facto sfxr for effects.  Finally for art I’ll either be using inkscape or photoshop, depends on my mood I guess.

HIPSTER DESK PHOTO

It’s too easy to just post a picture of your desk, but how many people can be super hipster about it?

Thar be a visage on me screen!

What could this robot be doing downtown?

Forget the robot being downtown. What is a duck doing swimming in the air! I like your robot’s design. Unicycled robots are the best. XD

Could he be discovering stuff? Just a guess 😛

LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU GUY!

Ladies and gentlemen, we very nearly have a game here.

I think your robot may be related to Bender.

Done

And I’m done!

The idea was that the player would have to discover attack combos to get a better score, however I didn’t have enough time to animate enough attacks to warrant this.  So the thematic portion relies on the story more now.

Controls are A, S and D for attacks.  See how high of a score you can get!

In with sin

I’m doing this, but with a twist.  I will be drinking the entire time I am working on my game.  To make things more fun, I’m using C++ and my custom engine built on Gosu!

I’ve got a collection of beer here, but I had to be fairly picky with what I will be drinking.  I could easily just buy a 30 pack of cheap whatever, but I tend to get black out drunk with really bad hangovers with that stuff.  So I’m drinking Killians, Shiner Bock and some Magic Hat.  I’ve found all of these to be pretty easy drinking for myself, which should help me to continue working and drinking!

I will also be using my livestream since that seemed to work out well last time.  I imagine this time around it will be slightly more amusing however.

My tools of choice are

  • Visual Studio 2010
  • Xcode 3 (yes, I will have an OS X build)
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Inkscape
  • GarageBand
  • sfxr

As I mentioned, I will be doing this in C++ using my engine which is build off of Gosu.  Good luck to everyone else participating!

LETS DO THIS

What’s this?  Play dough, graph paper, booze?  IT’S GAME DESIGN TIME!
