Day 0

Should have been posted last night but server updated at the same time

Well I have decided to make a sphere based infinite runner similar to Web . Progress is going good so far as I have the player and sphere in the game and can move the sphere around under the player.

Midday 1 progress

Making some good progress now that my math has stopped hurting. I added a neat visual without intending too as well when turning!

Dungeon Sphere Runner

Play on itch.io

https://www.itch.io/embed-upload/458822

My entry is an infinite runner style game on a sphere. I took inspiration from the sphere mini-game on Sonic 3 but themed it around D&D. It only has 1 map presently and no "victory" condition, but the engine loads maps from files so creating and adding more is very possible. Just use the left and right arrows to turn (or keys if you download the desktop version).

What went right The library I used (libgdx) worked great allowing me to skip the low-level code and get straight to making a game. Additionally I have already ported it to the web and plan to add an android port soon as well.

What went wrong My trying to figure out the 3D math to get the sphere to turn in the correct direction took most of Saturday and left little time to create actual maps.

What's next I plan to add map packs and teleporting between levels. To that end I will be adding gates and keys. Also sound effects and multiple lives seem fairly simple and would add some polish to the overall play. Given more time animations could be added so as the character flying instead of just sliding around.

I'm In

This is probably my 3rd Ludum Dare that I've been able to truly participate in. My last 2 entries did mediocre with 1 entry being in the top 100 for audio (I know a great audio guy http://amplitudeproblem.com/).

Setup

Hardware

I am using an older PC I built from the ground up - AMD FX 8350 - 16GB ram - ATI Radeon 5850

As for streaming I am using the following equipment - Logitech HD Pro c920 - Corsair Void Pro RGB wireless

Additional supplies include: - Pens/Pencils - Paper - GFUEL!!!

Software

For my development stack I will most likely be using libgdx and node.js (if a server component is valuable). - Libgdx - Notepad++ - Visual Studio 2017 (for node.js) - Gimp - Bfxr (sound effects)

Team

Adam Martin (myself)

I have been programming for many years, but sadly very little release to show for it. I completed a few prior Ludum Dare jams, but never went on to polish those into a releasable product.

I have released a game on the Google Play Store (A&R Monster Truck Derby) that is simple and great for young children.

Libgdx scaffold

https://github.com/adam4813/ldjam I am not sure how helpful this might be, but this is a simple scaffold that shows a start button that moves from title screen to game screen and includes a "default" skin as well.

I am using Android Studio 3 and there is some steps that needs to be taken to get it to run the desktop version, reply if you need help with this.

Good progress (source in comments)

Well after life (xmas shopping) I managed to get back to the grind. I am making a dungeon crawler/theif game where you have to sneak in and out with the treasure. The more treasure you have the louder you are. While moving you will need to more slow, hide behind things, and use distractions to your advantage.

The "hero" was not made by me, but the rest was.

I'm off work and in the jam!

For the first time in a couple years the jam lands on my weekend off!!

I'll be using libgdx and Android Studio with gimp for my programmer art. I will also be live streaming alot twitch

I am planning to make a 2-3 sentence idea for each possible theme so I can hit the ground running.

Bonus theme - ECHOES

So regardless of the actual theme, I propose a bonus theme of echoes as it was ironically in each round of voting leading up to the final round.

3D Platforming Entry

A friend and I made a 3d platformer, with very little balance, but lots of fun https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/time-wyrd
