LD24

My first taste of Jam.

Mmmm Jam….

This is my first time entering Ludum dare, and shouldn’t be my last. I will be entering the jam with my friend. Me on the code, him on the pixels. Here is a brief tool list:

  • Eclipse IDE: Because my language of choice is Java
  • Paint.net: My nooby image editor for quick sketches and minor image fixes
  • Flash Pro 8: The other guy’s image editor of choice.
  • LWJGL and Slick2d Libraries
  • My imagination: Not much left, gunna have to squeeze it a bit.
I cant wait for the compo! Looking forward to it greatly.

LD26

So I did…

I didnt plan on entering Ludum Dare this time around since my schedule was a bit too hectic. I was planning to be out most of the weekend, so with the spare time I did get, it wouldn’t be spent making games.

Ah, but how things change.

Most of my plans got canceled, so I found for time and started a small project. I used eclipse, lwjgl, and slick2d. For my graphics, Paint.net. Going to use sfxr for music.

Holofire's LD 26 entry.

Holofire’s LD 26 entry.

The game is called Pix, and is very simple. Get the blue pixel to the green pixel. The catch is all the light grey pixels must be traveled across and turned light blue. There will be a timer. Here is a screenshot.

All game play and graphics are done. Music still needs doing, and I also need to make a bunch of levels and test. It should be done on time if I don’t become distracted.

LD27

I’m in again.

So, after the unexpected success of my Ludum Dare 26 entry, I’ve decided im going to enter again.

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Frameworks: LWJGL and my small gui base code library found here.

Other Tools: SFXR for the sounds, Paint.NET for the graphics.

So yeah, I am ready for the compo.

2 hours in, time for some sleep.

Well, its gone 4 am where I am and Im pretty tired. I have made a good start on my currently untitled game. Below is what I have at the moment. It looks like nothing currently

Day 1, going well

I had some doubts while laying in bed last night, but I ma pretty confident now. The graphics are placeholder atm so dont judge 😉

I have got enemies and AI, pickups, wall placement and a timer currently. I hope to code up more pickups, base upgrades, more enemy types, more placable objects, more sounds, and better graphics.

Also, LIMIT

Yeah, mine is going to be named LIMIT since every action you take in game limits you further.

My LD26 game for October Challenge

So I’m remaking my Ludum Dare 26 game currently due to me liking the idea enough to pick it back up again, and my determination to participate in the October challenge. My LD26 submission was Pix, a 2D puzzle game that tied 100th overall. I am overhauling the graphical style and changing some gameplay elements, but the core features will stay the same.

I am not to sure whether Pix+ (the name of said remake) will succeed, but I can try my best. The common complaints to the original were the annoying beep sounds played when your pix was moved, the constant button pressing to move, the level order fluctuating in difficulty, and some problems with certain pix being too similar to players with limited color vision (aka colorblindness). To address these problems, I aim to:

  • New Audio – No more BEEP – BEEP – BEEP – BEEP. It’ll have new sounds and background music, with options to actually change the volume (or mute it completely)
  • Graphical Overhaul – I liked the original design, but I feel like it needs to be a bit more fleshed out if I wanna actually want to improve it.
  • More challenge! – The original 30 levels lacked challenge and could feel repetitive after multiple failures. I will hopefully try and increase the satisfaction achieved when completing levels. Maybe add a timer, a score system, achievements. I dunno, I’ll come up with something 😀 Also, MOAR LEVELS!
  • Alternate Color Scheme – I will be making grey scale graphics, colorized in the game itself. There will be color sliders so you can manually change the pix color scheme yourself. There will also be presets for the lazy people 😛
  • Android Port – I’m hoping to make an android port as it seems the game would suit mobile devices pretty well.

Pix Tiles 2

This is an essay of a post, but I wanna get my point across to the few of you that actually played and liked the original. To the right is the graphical style I hope to use applied onto the tiles.

Anyway, my fingers hurt and I need some sleep. G’night all, and good luck 😀

MiniLD #47 (Day 1) – Pix 2

So, I shall attempt the MiniLD #47. However, I am about 80-90% sure that I will fail due to me not having the time or resources available. Also, this is a very ambitious project for just 2 days. I am away from my main PC so I am coding and drawing on my laptop.

I currently have a very fancy shmancy title screen and some code for a level editor. Tommorow I will get the map loader and renderer working, and finish off the level creator.

My progress so far:

3rd Time In.

GUNNA DO DIS!

  • Language: Java
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Libs: LWJGL and stuff.
  • GFX: Paint.net
  • SFX: sfxr

I may aswell just have the list on my clipboard since I use those tools every time.

Good luck everyone, and may the odds never be in your favor ;D

LD29

In i’m…wait.

Alas, another four months have come and gone, and another event has arrived. I never had the chance to attempt LD28, but I entered LD27 with the (not so) award winning game LIMIT, and during LD26 I gave birth to my ultimate creation known as Pix. On a side note, due to LD26 ending on April 29th, it will be Pix’s b-day in 16 days. This has given me the motivation to complete the sequel named Pix 2 (catchy, ey?) on 29th April, 2pm BST.

Anyway, back to Ludum Dare 29. For this attempt the tools I shall be using are:

IDE: Eclipse

Language: Java

Libraries: LWJGL & Slick2D. Yes, I’ll get around to using LibGDX at some point, gimme a break.

Graphics: Paint.NET

Sound: SFXR & Audacity

Other: OBS to stream.

I plan to stream for most of the event on my twitch channel. Ill also be posting a couple of updates on here aswell during the event.

I did it. I made a game again. Its set in space and you got to fend of waves of enemies while a drill digs down Beneath The Surface (see what I did there) to plant a bomb. Then it explodes and you can travel to a different planet. It tracks exploded planets, and if you die on a planet it resets.

Overall, I am happy with the outcome and I expect to be fixing many bugs over the next few days. Check out my entry here.

The hand looks odd. It’s the right hand but it’s on the left side of the screen. Trippy.

LD30

I’m in…again again again.

Another season, another ludum dare. This will be the fourth time I enter ( alas, the title ), so I expect to come last as usual. I have made many friends through ludum dare, and even some enemies ( looking at you 0creds 😀 ).

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libs: LWJGL and some custom stuff I’ll post closer to the time.

GFX: Paint.NET & Photoshop if needed.

SFX: SFXR as usual.

Other: OBS when streaming to Twitch.

I look forward to the coming weeks immensely. Good luck and have fun everybody.

October Challenge: Pix 1.5

About a year and a half ago, during Ludum Dare #26, I created a game called Pix. Pix was a 2D puzzle game that involved getting the blue square to the green exit. It was for the theme ‘Minimalism’ which I think I incorporated pretty well. It reach #100 overall, and higher and a couple of other categories. Click here to view its submission.

1

Level 27 of the original Pix. Minimalistic style.

I have decided to come back to the original idea and redevelop and expand the game, while keeping the same gameplay mechanics. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you…Pix 1.5.

2

Title screen of Pix 1.5.

I have been working on this for about a week now and I have made a considerable amount of progress. All the menus and game systems are in place. About 80-90% of the images/graphics have been made and implemented. I do, however, have a few more weeks of development to go through due to me wanting to polish the butt off of this game.

I am currently working on a level editor which will provide simple and easy to use tools to create interesting and unique stages. I am also working on creating new tile mechanics. There are currently 3 new tiles that were not included in the original Pix, and the teleport system has been re-worked to allow much more flexibility. I also plan on adding a much more complex system to the level editor known as ‘flagging’. This will allow a level designer to assign custom properties to tiles and make them behave in a unique and customized way. The teleporters will be using this flagging system as an example.

Below are a few in-progress screenshots of Pix 1.5 (Click them for full size). Everything is still subject to change. I plan to release Pix 1.5 between 24th of October on itch.io for FREE!! Donations will be appreciated though. More details will be released closer to the time.
