Progress Report 1 – Idea Achieved

After waking up and taking an hour to think about what my idea could be I started work.

The basic idea is that you’re own planet has become uninhabitable and your people have moved out into space looking for a new planet to settle on. The only solar system they can find is one filled with tiny planets and tiny inhabitants. After landing to try and negotiate some sort of agreement the indigenous take great offence to your height and become extremely hostile, leaving you with the only choice of taking the tiny bastards out.

The game will hopefully have both space and land combat but as I’m using unity and I doubt I’ll be able to have time for that.

Progress report 2 – Electric boogaloo

Ending up spending the first 4 hours trying to fix a very strange but huge bug and as a result, I’m very far behind. Got some very buggy AI in and planetary physics. Time for a break then back to work or I have no chance of finishing.

Progress report 3 – Worth the wait.

Things have been going a lot more smoothly after the initial problems so I’m glad I stuck with it.

You can now jump in and our of your Ship and fly it around (only quick controls for now, I hope to expand upon it tomorrow).

You can give it a go here.

I plan to change a lot of it but I’d like to hear what you guys think so far.

Anyway, that’s enough for one night. Good night and good luck!

Yeah probably should have mentioned You press E to get in. And yes you can kill the little red man by jumping on him.

Progress report 4 – Damn you hurry up and get finished, game!

The games taking a lot Longer than I had hoped, and will most likely end up very unpolished and without art.

You press the E key to get in and out of the ship. The Tinies are killed by jumping on them and the turrets have to be shot with the shop (They’re very strong atm).

Give it a go here and let me know what you think.

I’m in!

Well, my team mates are busy so I’ll be entering solo this time round! May the great Platypus watch over me.

Anyway, the tools I’ll be using are as follows:

  • Engine: Unity3D (Might be a good time to try out the new 2D tools)
  • IDE: Visual Studio C# 2010
  • 2D Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Sound: BFXR

And some form of tile map editor if I need one.

Good luck to everyone entering!

Progress report numero uno!

After completing the mandatory code monkey task of “Get up get coffee” I sat down to brain storm some ideas.

At first I was all “You only get one!? I can’t think of anything for that!” but soon enough I was trying to narrow it down between 3 – 4 ideas I liked.

In the end I decided to go with a platforming game where you only have one button to control it. I’m currently hammering our some controls while thinking of possible game play elements for it, as you can see below, jumping and wall jumping are currently implemented.

wall jump

I was a bit worried about learning the new Unity 4.3 2D tools while participating, but so far it’s been plain sailing…..Famous last words I know!

Progress Report numero dos

Welp, because the code was going so well I decided to work on some art, seeing as I usually leave it to the last minute and it usually looks terrible.

Aaaaaaaaaand it still looks terrible. If only my team’s artists could help me….

I decided originally to use individual images and animate them in unity, because sprite sheets are hard. Unfortunately that was taking too look and I had to abandon it for sprite sheet animation…

walk cycle

^The aliens walk cycle. sprite still needs shading and…colours…

Anyone got any ideas for names for the little guy?

Progress report three

Done some more work on the art and the controls.

I’ve also added some enemies and some collectables which you’ll find in handy dandy gif format below:

collectkill

Progress report number…4?

Been busy this morning/afternoon.

After waking up, grabbing a coffee and eating a full English breakfast I set about finishing my game.

First I worked on making a death and win animation for the player as well has an assortment of sound effects.

death win

After that I did a bit of bug fixing and made some music using a free web tool. I’ve not really done music before, so it probably sounds awful, but hey…..some music is better than no music, right? …….guys?

Final progress report!

This will be my last update before submitting the game! There is so much more I wish I could do, but ran out of time.

Since my last report I’ve been working on the start, win and lose screens as well as the final level design.

I’ve decided to split it into three different paths, a short and easy path, and bit longer but more difficult path, and a long and hard path. Choose wisely!

Here’s what I got so far:

lvl design in progress

I really wish I had time to set up a tile system for the level design!

I’ll use the remaining time to set up the hard path and test/edit the other paths for as long as I can.

Submitted!

I did it! Finished my game and got it submitted!

“Unojo’s One Button Adventure is a plat-forming game controlled entirely by the space bar!

You find our little green protagonist separated from his allies, you have one life, one level and one button to reunite our one eye’d friend with his ship.

Dash, stomp and wall-jump your way home!”

Check it out here.

When I get some time I’ll write out a post-mortem, but for now its 2AM and I need sleep!

I’m in!

I’m in! Unfortunately my friends over at Unorthodox Games can’t join me for the Jam so I’ll have to enter the compo with my amazing (Read atrocious) programmer art skills!

Tools:

Language – C# or AS3
Engine – Either Unity or Flash develop,
Art – Paint.NET
Sound – Audacity and BFXR

Can’t wait to see some of the amazing games that will get made over the weekend!

Progress report #1

Sooooo… Entire game on one screen….. This theme has given me the most trouble coming up with an idea, but I think I might have something that will be fun to play.

Been working on getting the basics needed for the game implemented, Tile maps can be made and imported and I have some basic movement in, but my lack of experience with Unity’s 2D tools is really causing me to lose time. Here’s an obligatory placeholder art screen shot:

screen 1

Getting nice, fast movement is still giving me some grief.

Anyone got any tips for a top-down movement system for Unity2D? Using Box2D just felt too clunky and unresponsive.

Progress report #2

Well, progress has been slow and steady since the last update. My inexperience with Unity 2D continues to be a pain in my back side but I’m still hopeful I can get something done in time.

Here is what I have so far, running, slashing and shielding. Now I just need something to fight against!

Progress report #3

It’s a brand new day and there’s sooooooo much to get done. I had to stop early last night because of family reasons so that put me quite a bit behind.

New additions include a very stupid slime AI that can be kill and shoots projectiles….so that’s something!

Let me know what you think! Programming AI is new to me, so any tips would be much appreciated!

Maybe you can make them follow you when you get close enough and have them only shoot when they can see you. I’d give you code but the only language I know is gml (and some basic c# but not enough to make ai).

Progress report #4

Progress has still been slow and steady, I’ve given the art an upgrade (still looks bad but it’s the best I can do!) and added in mob spawners and a new enemy with different AI.

Check out a small clip of game play below:

Time is running out fast, I doubt I’ll be able to get anywhere near to the vision I had in mind, even if I manage to submit something!

Submitted!

I just barely managed to get something that might be called a game together in time. It’s been fun, but I need some sleep!

I’m in!

I’m looking forward to making a terrible game in 48 hours while having an absolute blast developing it!
As always, I’m looking forward to what you crazy people are capable of making in 48/72 hours.

Tools to be used: Unity, Visual Studio, Inkscape and maybe some free tools for music/sound if I get enough time.
