Ludum Dare 52

My first Ludum Dare, made a game about Harvesting Fish for compo!

I'm pretty used to crunching, but oh boy, this was tough. I had a chance to sleep for a few hours (literally 2 hours), but almost all 46 hours that's left were a real pickle. I really like the outcome though:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/catchy (WebGL, Windows and YouTube walkthrough available).

Catchy is a top-down Fishing and Sailing simulator where you have to catch fishies with a hook! Imagine Raft and Sea of Thieves having a child in 2D (on a budget). Also fans of ships might like the sailing mechanics ;)

ludum-dare-52.png

Oh, and Pudge/Stitches-like hooks are also here, and they are really fun! Catching fish is one of the main objectives, but I just like to do it for fun :)

Playthough of Catchy (Raft + Sea of Thieves in 2D using old naval maps style)

Created this game in 48 hours for compo. I created a video with gameplay of Catchy https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/catchy (game about sailing on a fisherman ship and catching lots of fish), so if you are too tired to play, you can just watch walkthrough :)

https://youtu.be/E922dXT4Ens

I barely had enough time to finish all main gameplay features (but I did it!), so I didn't have enough to record and implement sounds, but I hope it's ok :) Second half of a video I'm trying to find 2 rare fish kinds, but I won't say I didn't like to search for them, I still enjoy playing it even though I spent last ~3 days with that game.

Although I completed 7 "main quests", there are some hidden secrets and more upgrades to get, so if you are interested, feel free to try the game yourself (you can even do it in the Embeded WebGL build here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/catchy).

I will now finally go to sleep and get some rest (yay!). Cyall tomorrow, gonna try a lot of cool new games for sure!

When you need to make a Tutorial for your Compo game

I like nicely done tutorials and all, but when you have to make a game in 48 hours, it turns out to be like this :D

I'm not so proud of using text hints baked into islands, although I don't think it was the worst solution in my situation (finished the game 30 minutes before the deadline).

You can try Catchy (Sailing and Fishing sim) here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/catchy. I will probably add some stuff later, so honest feedback is appreciated.

Concept art for Catchy – my Compo submission about Fishing and Sailing

Here's the concept that I made during The Compo before I started to prototype. Most of the stuff didn't fit in those 48 hours, but I'm still glad with what I made :) Here's some stuff that I planned on this mockup, but didn't implement:

  • Pirates and naval battles (yarrr, you can sail calmly)
  • Big ships (buying new ships could be a nice way to spend collected currency)
  • Trading resources (it all came to Fish as a points with milestones for unlocking new tiers of speed for you current ship)
  • Ports (I had to be used to for upgrading and trading)
  • Damaging and rapairing ship using lumber/wood

I still really like how the game turned out, even with all the feature cuts. Please try the game and rate it if you have time, and if you don't feel like playing, you can just check out the gameplay video. Honest feedback is appreciated, since it's possible that I will continue to develop the game after voting. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure all of you had to feature cut your games as well. Feel free to share what you had to reject to complete the game in time :)

Fishy Guide for Catchy (Raft + Sea of Thieves 2D combo)

Some players had problems with finding some of the fish types, so I decided to make this guide. I think it's the best solution, since I can't change the build for now :) I hope that helps sailers and anglers in need!

How I used reference image and Affinity Photo effects to draw game art

how I used ref.gif

I thought that it might be interesting. Here's how I used Affinity Photo effects (they are pretty much like in Photoshop), masks and this reference image to draw game art for my Compo entry – Catchy (Sailing and Fishing sim).

At first I wanted to create some tiles to generate islands randomly, but then decided to just create a system, that will allow me to draw unique islands on demand. I spent quite some time, but that saved me a lot of time when I had to fill the game with content.

effects.png

This system of masks, effects and textures allowed me to just draw form of islands on the mask – the rest was done by the editor.

Creating seamless background took some time as well, but this is a different story :)

If you like the game art or the main idea of the game (sailing using the wind and fishing using the hook as in Raft), feel free to try Catchy and rate it for the Compo:

Let me know if you have any questions about the art or the game, I'll try to answer them all!

Shy Sharks in Catchy always swim away from the ship

Shy Sharks don't like to be nearby ships, so if they see one, they just swim away in the opposite direction.

My theme suggestions

psUocpSjiCG9jAJ.png p.s. sorry for duplicate, post didn't show up for a long time (probably because of the spam filter), so I reposted it

100% done

themes.png

Here's some thoughts:

  • Suggesting 1 or 2 themes instead of 3 would be a nice idea since going through 2600+ themes is pretty time-consuming, and some of the themes looked like a filler.
  • Some people should check spelling before submitting.
  • Would be really nice and handy to have some kind of schedule to know when what happens: when the Theme Slaughter ends, when voting 1 starts, when voting 2 starts etc.

Will there be additional hour after Compo time ends?

Will there be additional hour after Compo time ends?

I didn't see anything about that in the news, but maybe I missed something. We had 1 additional hours during LD 52 for preparing builds and some promo stuff, but I'm not sure this is the case today. If you have any info, please share a link or schreenshot, thanks!

Bag Stranding – from concept to full game for The Compo

Here's what path my Compo game went from concept to full game. Bag Stranding is like a super-short Death Stranding in 2D with hilariously unrealistic physics and unique game mechanics.

Ever wondered how adventurers in RPGs manage to carry so much stuff? Try Bag Stranding (my Compo game, made in 48 hours)! This game is like a super-short Death Stranding in 2D with hilariously unrealistic physics and unique game mechanics.

I made a game about creating custom monsters for the Compo

Key Art.png

The game is called STUPID LEGS – you summon customized derpy monsters to do the chores for you: check mail, do the laundry, gather apples, pay taxes, and more!

It was made in 48 hours for the Compo – I managed to do all the essential stuff in time, but there's also a post-compo version that is more polished and has some additional content and sounds in it.

first level first monster.gif

I loved making this one, and it's pretty fun to play! There are 4 levels (6 in post-compo version), so it's not very long (around 5-10 minutes, I'd say).

Try STUPID LEGS

Bloopers and funny bugs during my Compo game development

During the development of STUPID LEGS for the Compo I stumbled upon A LOT of physics problems, funny bugs, and weird interactions, so I captured some of them just in case :)

Multiple rigidbodies are no joke!

I don't feel good.gif

"Have you by any chance seen my eye here?"

When the monster part attaching mechanics are still Work-in-Progress

Chunky.gif

I managed to tame Unity physics, but it wasn't easy: a lot of features worked not as I wanted it to work, so I had to use a lot of workarounds and questionable solutions. Although I'm still glad with the result (even the Compo version).

If you wanna try short (5-10 minutes) fun and funny game about summoning custom monsters, try STUPID LEGS. There are 2 versions available: compo, (made in 48 hours) and post-compo (more polished, more content, intro and tutorial added, sounds added).

I made a playthrough video for STUPID LEGS (my Compo game)

In STUPID LEGS you summon customized derpy monsters to do the chores for you: check mail, do the laundry, gather apples, pay taxes, etc.

I know that it's not very convenient to download builds for every compo/jam game, so I made a playthrough video.

Feel free to try it yourself, it will take 5-10 minutes – https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/stupid-legs
