Minimalist…

That doesn’t mean minimal effort. Come on, guys, if you don’t have a good part of these 48 hours available for the contest, then don’t participate. I don’t want to see a thousand ‘click here to win’ games tomorrow.

True. However, even though I only spent four hours on my entry, I still consider it a serious one. Not a good one, though. The theme simply did not inspire me – I’ll spend the rest of the weekend working on a larger game project that I’ve been doing for some time now..

Visualization tests

I have thought out about the concept and mostly done some
tests regarding what direction to take with the visualization.
I’ll try to take the theme “minimalism” into account in several
ways – visuals, gameplay and possibly audio as well. But still
trying to make it feel good.

It’s a Game! Almost!

Yeah, I’ve added interactivity to my game.  From here on out, it’s pretty much just going to be adding in the polish.

How minimal

Click here to win – I don’t think would count as a game.

To be a game you must be able to win or loose.

I will be doing good to find 8 hours to work on this. But I have an idea which with 1 hour into the the base logic exists – and I have only found one of those hours.

First screenie

Behold, this shall be my faaaaaaaaaantastic car game!

Now if only my gf would understand how marvelous this is. 😀

Graphics assets and screen mock-up

After 4 working hours (9½ hours in , damn timezones) I’ve got a plan, drawn all the graphical assets and produced a screen mock-up. The idea isn’t original, it’s actually a clone of a game I used to love playing, <bad Rolf Harris impersonation>Can you tell what it is yet?</bad Rolf Harris impersonation>

Pengo!

The chipmunk is alive!

I was planning to learn chipmunk before the compo, but never quite got around to it… so it took a little longer than planned to get it up and running – but now I’ve got a load of rigid body boxes flying around the screen. And the beginnings of a level editor for a physics-y platformy thing. Minimalist in a mostly visual style way. And in my usual LD48 minimal-as-in-nonexistant audio way…

Now, what am I likely to be able to do in 7 hours or so?

I’m based in the UK, and decided I’d just go to bed and set an alarm to wake me up at 3am to find out what the theme was and get an idea fully worked out before possibly heading back to bed for a couple of hours.

Forgot to actually set my alarm, and had a load of things to do when I got up, so didn’t get onto here until around 11.30am – 8.5 hours already gone.

I was only going to be able to find around 15 hours this weekend anway, so any entry is going to be *very* minimalistic. Going to put together a vector font and see if anything springs to mind whilst I’m doing that.

Good luck everyone!

Oh, and jovoc’s motivation poster is absolute genius.

DESK!

Well, kitchen table at least. All these photos of computers-at-windows made me relocate to this unorthodox spot. It’s the most window-facing point in my apartment, and I must say the light is quite inspiring compared to being stuck between two walls and a closet. Seen in foreground is the comfy chair, complete with soft cushion and keyboard-in-lap action.

Second screenshot

Got a bit further with my entry.

It now has a small green square, some red squares, some white square, a yellow square and a blue square!

Tiny gem collecting skater

Tiny skater, shot #2

My tiny skater now grind rails and collect red gems. It’s almost like a real game now! I’m also planning on having wall jumping, and possibly slopes. Also missing some core “game” stuff like counting points, and maybe a goal.

Gosh darn framework

I decided to make a minimalist RPG type of thing.  Most likely, the result will be minimal interface, and just a battle system.  Hopefully I can make it something fun.  I spent most of last night getting framework up and running, and now it’s time to put together something to show off in screenshot form.  Also, I appear to be running on a minimal amount of milk.  I should have went shopping yesterday.

Mouse control

I’m definitely at a disadvantage compared to some of the more seasoned pros here, but I just got my application to understand where the mouse is. I never implemented mouse control in a game before, so I decided to do so in a time-based competition. Nice.

Soon I hope to have a few elements on the screen that can know if the mouse is near them and will react. Wish me luck!

First screenshot

First screenshot of my game. It actually mostly works. It’s a twist to the old worm cave idea (one button to accelerate upwards, gravity does the rest). In my game you type the text shown at the bottom to move up (false hits accelerate downwards). What is missing is wall collisions, scoring and menus. I’ve been doing the game in .NET 2.0 (no XNA) and using only letters. Not sure how minimalist this is but I’ve always wanted to make an ascii game without the normal ascii grid :).

Sadly I’m going to have to put the game on hold for today as I have the party to attend t. Cheers everyone, see you tomorrow!

Game idea for LD entry

This took me a bit of thinking and discarding of lousy ideas, but I think I finally have a good idea.

I don’t know what to name the game yet, but the idea is that the player controls his character with the mouse and has to run down the monsters in order to kill them. The player character always accelerates towards the mouse cursor at a fixed rate. The monsters spawn at random locations, growing more numerous as the game goes on. The game ends when a monster hits the player from behind or from the side, and the player’s score is the number of seconds he lasted.

Created some more objects and refined visuals a bit. I have also
been annoyed by buggy ATI drivers, having to reboot the computer.
I have also looked through irr API a bit (I’m using Irrlicht).

latest

this is a screenshot

Latest screenshot of my game.. Getting the spaceship(s) moving around properly, gravity effects them and planets will combine when they intersect (although there are still a few kinks with that — momentum is not properly conserved upon merging).

When the planets reach the edge of the map,it “zooms” out to incorporate them (although the background doesn’t change yet,so it looks pretty stupid). Also these screen changes don’t maintain the screen ratio, so everything often gets quite skewed. Ships crashing into planets does nothing yet..

The next step is to add the bullets and shooting in, and to differentiate input between the single ships. I’m thinking that when the bullets collide with planets, it will split them apart into smaller chunks again.

I also think it would be a good idea to have a central “neutral” gravity point (like a sun) that everything can rotate around.. Because at the moment everything just merges into one group (and now those merge into larger planets).

Anyway now is as good as time as ever for sleep, since I am feeling quite tired.. gonna get up early tomorrow though and work work work (had friends over today, so had a good 2-3 hours doing not-programming)
