Some Progress, But Still in a Conundrum

Well, I’ve made some progress (see picture). I have my main screen up and running and am able to select the “frames”, but I’m having trouble figuring out what I want to do with them still. Figured that idea would come up as I went, but not yet. It’s getting late where I am, so I’ll sleep on it and hope more inspiration falls on me. Otherwise, my graphical inspiration may fail to become a nice game concept, which wouldn’t really be a surprise…

1 day 20 hours 19 minutes remaining until impact

I’ve had to abandon my idea of using IndieLib. I had some strange problem with running in debug mode. Oh well, I am excited to be using PTK instead. It was also on my list of engines to try. So far I like it. Actually, Wow, it is an appropriate engine for this theme because it takes a very minimalist approach to everything.

I’ve decided to do a minimalist turn-based strategy game. I’ve been contemplating what the bare necessities are required. The idea is still fluid, but I have put together my framework and implemented the ‘Next Turn’ button. That seems a necessary element for a turn-based game don’t you think.

Here’s a screen shot:

First screen shot of my minimalist turn-based game.

The logo is actually a test of my codes ability to put a sprite up, it won’t be a part of the game 😉

And you can even download my executable here to try clicking the ‘Next Turn’ button! (Windows build, sorry I don’t have a Mac or Linix to create builds with) Let me know if you have problems. It’d be useful to address them now.

Thanks for checking HybridMind. I keep a look out for yours and return the favor.

day one: breakfast

Well here my sadly boring breakfast, half through. Now i gotta think of something interesting, this meal didn’t help.boring

Gravity sucks

I decided I wanted to do something involving gravitation. So far I got some asteroids spinning around a black hole with Bullet physics. Now there’s the small matter of gameplay.  And making it minimalist.

Aw crap.

I just woke up and checked the theme.

Out of all the themes in the final round minimalist was probably the only one that didn’t imediately give me any ideas for a game. (Ok, that and bumber cars) Oh well, I guess I’ll go make some coffee/breakfast and hope to come up with something within the hour or so.

Updates

hey hey its updates galore..

we’ve had dinner, lasagne + bread + coleslaw deliciously made by surrealix’s mum.

nom nom nom

i’ve also got some a few screenies of my game, was having alot of trouble with the planets not being attracted to each other properly, then it turns out I was treating the angle returned by atan2 as degrees, when it was radians (i did that before when i was practicing as well, fool me twice).

As you can see, everything looks very “minimalistic” (and if you disagree, you’re wrong)

How can I possible get an idea for this???

I was hoping for endless, but oh well, I’llhave to think harder.

Just take the best idea you had for endless and make it as minimal as possible 😉

Update no1

ok, so first off, heres my finished game: [ linky ]

and heres a screeny of what I have really been doing for a good couple of hours:

of course I’m going to end up scrapping that because I didnt think it through and although I managed to make some cool code that draws super pixelated stuff from vector landscape, it just runs slowly, and wont fit the theme anyway, so the drawingboard is where I’m off too.

and here is my desk and food so far:

its getting messy. also I would like to point out, that normally those sausage rolls are awesome, that batch was just gross, I may have to order in the pizza sooner than planned >__>

Lunch out

Ahhh nice weather

In my garden. It’s really not much bigger that what you can see here.

A closeup

Mmm Sweat and sour chicken.

Thinking about my game, the boat is steering now. Could use a little tweaking, but I’ll move on anyways, not to get cought up in tiny issues. Not putting up a screen now, think title screen with only blue and boat and you got it.

Ahhh the coffe is ready… back to coding.

It’s alive!

and kicking. It also runs.

I’ve decided upon a type of who-dunnit-mystery-game (minimal clues), though I’ve yet to pin down the details. I’m going for a very minimalist art style (obviously), but also a fairly minimalistic puzzle style gameplay. More updates as I figure things out.

Anyhow, here’s what’s on screen after hour 5.

Min Mo

That’s my working title currently…

Well, it’s about 3am here EST and I think I’ve gotta shuffle off to bed. I’ve spent the past 4 or so hours working in art programs on concept art and haven’t written a lick of code. I’ve basically been listening to Deep Mix / Moscow Radio which I’ve found very inspirational for this theme whilst I’ve drawn animated bitmaps to the beat.

I started out in Corel Draw and then ended up in Tile Studio. I got inspired while I was in Corel Draw and then took some of the concepts over to Tile Studio to flesh out further in tile / bitmap format. I came up with my main character animation sprite sets and got a nice test animation that I actually don’t know how to dump out to an animated gif to share. Too tired to figure that out right now, so nothing visual to share yet. Now I just need to keep fleshing out the scope of the game / gameplay and see if I can code something usable in time! Phew..!

I’ve enjoyed seeing everyone’s posts and chats in the IRC channel. I hope you are all having a good time! 😉 What an adventure.

First screen shot

Well I have a bit of an idea and have started on it.

Here is a screen shot of my idea so far.

A blue square and some red squares, pretty minimal 😛

Ooh, I finally have an idea…FINALLY!

Ok my idea goes like this:

You have  5 questions to try and give the computer as much info as possible, the computer then tries to guess, if the computer gets it right you earn a point. If the computer gets it wrong then the computer gets a point.

Sound fun?

food for thought

Some ice-cream to get me in a good mood. I’m just gonna treat it as a normal saturday until i get an idea. So far going as planed. 😀

I ask you this

What on earth is this!

It’s a minimalist background for my minimalist house builder!

bg.png

Passed 100 lines!

Noooo, I’ve passed 100 lines, not minimal enough!

I decided to do a space game.  My criteria is the minimal amount of features to make a cool space game for me, which means decent physics, and non linearity.  Beyond that I don’t know.  Here’s the boring minimal starscape:

spacewar.JPG

And here’s the entire game so far:

code.JPG

Has particles, flashy stars (I don’t care if they don’t twinkle in space, I WANT TO SEE THE TWINKLY), physics, and guns.  Pretty good for 100 lines of code, but I could do better.

Night 1 Complete – So Far So Good (I hope)

Ok, so I’ve gotten as far as I’m going to get tonight, and I’m pretty happy with my progress so far.

I’ve got a design and a plan done. I think I’ve actually come up with an rpg idea that is small and simple enough to complete in the time allotted.

I’ve completed the map and I’ve got all the metadata including monsters, items and terrain stored in an xml file.

And I’ve coded the top level of the app including the loading of the map and metadata into objects. I’ve done an outline in comments showing the code I need to write, at least at the highest level.

My goal was to complete the design, metadata, and outline of the game tonight (CHECK).

Tomorrow, I hope to code all the logic of the game. It should work completely by the end of day tomorrow.

On sunday, I hope to create the graphics, sounds, music and voice-overs I need and put in any finishing touchs I have time for (probably not many – lakers are playing on Sunday).

Let’s see how it goes. I’m excited so far, but getting a little tired right now.

Time management? You can’t handle the time management!

Hi there. My name is Chris, I’m the guy responsible for this game, and this is my first Ludum Dare ever. I’m going to use a library which I haven’t touched for literally years (pygame), in a language which I hardly ever use (Python). I only decided to enter half an hour ago (after the contest started – yes, I’m that hardcore), so I’m completely unprepared.

No matter. I’ve probably got pygame installed… do I? Oh yeah, I do. That’s good. So… how does one use this, again? Meh. I’m sure there’s a tutorial on the net somewhere.

Did I mention that I’m going to a party tomorrow? That will take up pretty much the whole day, and mean that I probably won’t be up and functional before noon the day after, which is the deadline. So I only have tonight available, and it’s currently 6pm here. Factoring in an hour for dinner and assuming a responsible bedtime of 10pm, that means I have… three hours.

Hmm. Oh well. At least there’s crap-all on TV.

Maybe I should stop typing English and start typing code right about now.

Any second now….

…wait for i
