Hey guys! We are really glad you liked the mood and the art of the game, so we decided to share with you a little bit of the process of the artwork! If you haven't played our game wet, please, check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/memories-of-eleph! (and be careful, there are the spoilers below!)
Once we set the central ideia of the game, based on the concept of starting without memory, we tried to define what would be our main character. After some sketches and brainstorming we remembered about the elephant, an animal that have a great memory, and we thought that playing with this contradiction could be interesting! These are one of the first loose and not fancy sketches of the possible characters, and you can see our dear Eleph coming together!

The next step was to look up to references for the mood, colors and character design. This was really imporant to set the game art tone!
After that, a basic mockup was created with the first version of Eleph and some placeholder tiles. From this mockup I iterated some color schemes that you can see below. The team choose the third one, and then I modified it a little bit to better suit my taste hehehe

Because I had never worked with pixel art for a topdown game before, I learned a lot during the entire jam. I had never created pixel art particles in Unity and I had never made a 4 frame walk cycle before. It was really challenging, but super fun! Here is Eleph cycle in his final shape!

I forgot to say that in the beggining we built a list of the art to be done, and it was huge. So we focused on keep things as simple as possible, especially for animation. The enemies, for exemple, have only four frames, moves with an idle animation and are always facing down.

I applied the same thought for the tiles and props of the rooms, but creating variety, corners and patterns got things a little bit confusing and overwhelming. Here is the final screen of the tilemap, props and enemy design file hehehe It's a big mess

Once everything started to come togheter inside the game, we started designing the UI elements and the screens. It was pretty straight forward and fun to do! I searched for a good pixel art font(PixelMix) and aimed for a cleand an simple design, with a pinch of cuteness. These below are some mockups!

I don't really remember why, but creating the pixels coming out of the timer gave us such a headache!

The screen below was one of my favorite parts of the initial ideia of the game.. A mind map screen where you could see and read his memories after collecting then. Unfortunally we didn't had enough time to do it...

Well, here is an actual footage of the game!

That's all for today! We would like to thank you all again for the feedbacks and kind words we've been receiving!
See you in LDJ46!
