It's been a while since we posted something, so I figured I could share a bit about the concepts that Frogbert went through, from the initial idea to the finished concepts we worked off to create our entry.
When we read the theme, we tried out best to put down some ideas. It was fairly hard to come up with nothing, but while we were writing down ideas, our concept artist, Giraffalope, was drawing some cute frogs. Because who doesn't love frogs? Eventually she ended up with this chef frog, Frogbert. All of us on the team love cooking games and restaurant management games such as Overcooked, or Cook, Serve, Delicious!, or Diner Bros, so we figured, OK, let's do something like that.
You, Frogbert, start from nothing. Not even your chef hat! And the idea was (is?) to build up your restaurant, to upgrade and invent new recipes and continue adding new cooking stations and difficulty, going from your humble beginnings at the pond to a fine dining establishment. What we've made is a slice of that pie. But how did we want to present it?
At first, we were thinking literal conveyor belts - much like those in Overcooked. But it didn't quite fit our theme of a frog from humble beginnings.
As we continued to develop the concept, we exchanged the conveyors with streams of water with lilypads holding the ingredients. Giraffalope continued fleshing out the idea of the kitchen, adding the different elements, from customers to utilities to UI, which we then discussed amongst the team to figure out the scope of it and if we could do it in the time frame. This is our first Ludum Dare, after all!

At this point, we still hadn't quite figured out how we would start the whole thing. Because it didn't quite fit the theme of "you start with nothing". And perhaps it still doesn't really, but at least we made a bit of an effort! So we thought, OK, what if you don't even start with the hat?
Perfect.
While Giraffalope was doing all these concepts, I was working on making all the 3D elements and setting up the environment in Unity. Our programmer, mathemagician, was making progress on the prototype.

From there on out, Giraffalope was drawing all of our UI elements, many which we couldn't even get around to implementing with the time constraints and our inexperience with Unity!
Here are the finished concepts that we basically made our game around. Unfortunate that we couldn't implement a nice system for the day cycle to move from morning to night. That's something we will likely want to implement later.

My video about Ludum Dare is finally out. I would love if you checked it out and gave me feedback! It is the story of how my first Ludum Dare was a DISASTER!

Have you ever saw "Dogville", from the danish director Lars Von Trier? If not, I recommend it a lot! It was a really good movie, with a really good story.
When the theme was revealed, I admit I was very happy because it was the theme I hoped for. I already has the idea of the empty space and the scene is being revealed when the story is developing. But at the beginning I was trying to do an white scene, like the Assassin's Creed loading screen.
First I modeled all the furniture and characters.

But when I started to put everything in the game engine. I felt so sad with the result.

At this time, I confess there I had think in gave up, but instead I started to research some references and I found the Lars Von Trier movie and immediately changed the aesthetic of my game to it.

I think this is the best decision I make in the development of this game. At the end I found the game become better than I was planning at the beginning, and I'm very happy with the result.

I hope you guys liked too! If you haven't played yet, take a chance to it!
I've been working on the post-jam update for Millions Of Minions. Here's a peek of what I've been working on.

More and more time passes from the beginning of the jam. More and more difficult it is to remember how it all began. On the image below – first day prototype). What we got in the end - play and rate here!)

I released the first post-jam version of my submission cakewalk. It is mostly a graphics update where the placeholder graphics for enemies are replaced by space rascals who are a fish, a shuriken, a flame and a cannon. There are also some graphics effects like a glowing line, explosion and warping level transition. All the updates are additions I wanted to make during the jam but didn't have enough time. They're meant to move the game away from a minimalist, abstract style toward something more substantial which I think makes more sense for the game since it already has a main character. And so now we know what the cake is up against!

These are zoomed in versions of very small 12x12 sprites. I didn't want to increase the size of the enemies because I would have to change the design to deal with new collision parameters, so I just made very small graphics. I like them, but well, they are tiny, and therefore difficult to both see and make. They look a lot better than the original X graphic, though.

The other graphics additions are effects generated by pygame code. The glowing line uses algorithmic generation to add a random gradient to the line each time a level loads. The portal and explosion are sprites built by looping through position and alpha parameters using ellipses. And the warp is a simple scaling effect that is generated at run time to avoid scaling a large image in real time.

I started a dev log on itch (with basically the same information), and I also finally made a mac build for 64-bit OS X 10.14 (it should work on other 64-bit versions, but I haven't done a lot of testing for mac)! The OS X build is available on the jam submission page along with Windows and Linux versions.
