Ludum Dare 46 April 17–20, 2020

After Much Waiting

I see at least 1 other person who has re-visited a LD-42 entry. After much complaining from my brother that he still can't refuel the ship after over a year, I present Space Shipping, now with repair/refueling added. Full list of changes is on the Itch.io page, you can check it out here: https://rubixnoob13.itch.io/space-shipping

I also added a Linux variant, which I'm not sure will work correctly as I was testing it on a VM hooked to my development machine, haven't tested it on Linux installed on actual hardware, although I don't see why it shouldn't work :)

I am actually kinda psyched to be working on programming again, I had a lot of RL things keeping me side tracked from it. Soon, I intend to get the project ported from Gamemaker Studio over to Godot, because there are some things I've learned to do in Godot that are either clunky or impossible in GMS, at least with my current level of GMS knowledge. And since I have the 1.4 version of GMS and it's technically unsupported, and Godot is free and open-source, I plan to make the jump to Godot.

Future things planned for this project: - Better solar system - Ability to load multiple cargo per stop - Music and sound effects - Actual combat vs random events while moving on the navigation map - Multiple galaxies to explore instead of just part of our current solar system - Procedural generation for replayability - Multiple Ships and cargo hold layouts, since it was initially conceived as a puzzle game based on the "Running out of Space" theme - Other improvements suggested by other Jammers / FaceBook friends and family after the jam ended in 2018.

That's all for now, stay tuned for future updates, and I'll try to not take a year or more for the next one!

Looking for Level Designers

Hey there.

Im an Unity solo dev with about two years experience, I can do 2D/3D art, basic audio and code most simple things but Im not a good game designer in general. Im good at making things work, but get bored when I need to turn working systems and mechanics into a complete level or bigger cohese game mostly because Im not a good game designer.

If anyone here likes to do game design, specially levels, and has dev experience to show, Id love to try out some small jams together. I can do 90% of the work and you just design mechanics and levels, if theyre fun I'd have no problem with that.

Most of my recent work is under NDA but here are some: https://www.instagram.com/gabsmontemor/ https://gabsmontemor.itch.io/

PM me on discord if youre interested: Gabs#4276

Will you practice before the jam?

I know that it's still 2 months, but previous year I did an 8 hour game jam, to find out what I should improve on before the next Ludum Dare.

If I will have time besides my studies, I will definitely do this again.

*How do prepare for the game jam? I'm curious because I'm already hiped  *

Oh, and a bit of self promoting, here is the post mortem of my 8 hour game jam

I'm in

And here's my suggestions for this LD. Not my best, not my worse. We will see if this is inspiring for someone, or not.

I'm In!!!

Hopefully this time there isn't an emergency that keeps me from doing it.

Themes:

  • Fluidity of movement

  • Can't stop, won't stop

  • Incongruity

A continuation of my game from Ludum Dare 42, published on the iPhone App Store!

So admittedly, my entry for Ludum Dare #42 was pretty mediocre - it ranked 988th overall, had no sounds or animations, and the overall gameplay had some design and balancing problems. But it was a milestone for me in being the first "finished" game I had ever put out there for other people to play. I went on to do a few other game jams, and decided that rather than tackling a huge ambitious project for my first "real" game (I had my sights set on building a full RPG), I should try to fully finish and release a smaller game in order to better learn the ropes of doing it. That smaller game is now available on the iPhone App Store, and you may recognize it as a continuation of my game from Ludum Dare #42:

LDJAM-to-AppStore.png

Granted, the overall theme is really the only similarity between the two -- Pretty much everything else ended up completely different from the original, all the way from the title ("Evil Forest Battle" vs. "Bitey Trees") to the gameplay mechanics (clicking with half-baked Tetris block patterns vs. "bubble shooter" style aiming) to the level designs (square grid vs. hex grid) to the technology used (React vs. SpriteKit). The remade version did end up taking a fair bit longer than I'd originally expected, but it was really fun and satisfying to see this little project through to release on the App store.

Anyway, here is the App Store link for anyone interested -- any feedback would be most appreciated! And I'd be curious to hear from anyone else who did a more polished continuation (or outright remake) of one of their Ludum Dare submissions, especially for release on mobile? Would love to hear about it in the comments!

I can't wait!

I don't like this six months period! I'm really hyped for the next Ludum Dare!

While I'm waiting, I'm thinking of theme suggestions, and am open to change if someone has constructive criticism. - Game Inside Of A Game - Our Childhood Heroes - You Are Only A Dream

I'm also doing idea jams to practice coming up with good ideas on command.

I've got a list of past Ludum Dare themes as well as themes from other game jams. With a pad of paper, a pencil, and a timer, I randomly pull a theme, and begin writing as many single-sentence ideas as I can in ten minutes. The ideas don't need to be fleshed out at all, even just names or main mechanics work.

After that, I pick the two or three most interesting ideas that I think could fit the scope, and take ten minutes each to add details like story, main mechanics, art style, etc..

With this, after just thirty to forty minutes, I have a couple of great ideas that I can begin prototyping!

I upgraded the game of "LD45."

I am in !

Finally after having missing out two Ludum dares, I can happily say I canˇt wait for this one. Hopefully the theme will be easy to create. Good luck everybody !

LDJam 46 i'm coming

Hey fellow I can't wait for the next ludum dare. In meantime i just released game in playstore i need more rate and feedback from you guys Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.SotongStudio.AncientClimbers

Missed the previous one but going to participate in 46!

It's difficult to work on my own game full-time and find some time to create side projects... I am often very tired and you know it's good to play some games as well, not only create them :)

What do you think of my suggestions? The theme never fits me or rather when it's released I feel void in my head and usually sit around and die inside.

Let me know themees.PNG

Once again, I'll be trying to make a game

I am now in for my 10th(!) Ludum Dare. It's kinda hard to imagine that I've been doing this for so long, and yet we still haven't had a good theme yet. But asking for a good one is just not going to happen. There's no such thing as a good theme, just less bad ones.

Made some more generic suggestions as my previous ones didnt even survive slaughter, heh. Hope the 46 theme to be a nice one!

Theme Suggestions and Why

LD46 Theme Suggestions.png

I really like the first two ideas: I think they're pretty open and interpretable. I feel like the last couple of LD themes have been too straightforward... Like, "Start with nothing": It's very clear on what it means, which is a downside for me because I think game jams are at their best when they let people do almost whatever you want with them. "Your life is currency" was one I really didn't like, because I felt forced to use the player's life as a currency in a shop, or as ammo. I think themes should be up for interpretation, so that you get a variety of games that all used the same phrase or word in wildly different ways

I've also been playing a lot of Factorio, and I'm just curious what jammers could do with Automation. I think that could be super interesting.

Looking to team up

Hello everyone!

I am @jeroenpx and I am looking to team up for LDJAM46!

The last two game jams I worked solo and that went very well, but I would like to team up for this one to get to know some more people!

So, who am I?

28 year old, male, living in Belgium, doing game development purely as a hobby. My skills range from: Programming (C# (Unity), Java, JavaScript, React), shaders & compute shaders, ... I also know something about: 3D modeling, rigging, texturing, animating, ... & 2D art (trying to improve) but I would even like try sound effects... No skills there, my previous games had no audio...

Because images say more than words... some previous prototypes I worked on: 20200229emcatgame/emsmall.gif Cat - Unreleased prototype to improve my animation skills... (solo project)

20200229_fruitapolis.gif Fruitapolis - Made in a game jam in one day (solo project)

20200229_gowiththeflow.gif Go with the flow - (game jam team project - LDJAM38 - did the programming only)
Programmed the fluid simulation & water particles

20200229emicygolems/em6.gif Icy golems - puzzle game (solo project - LDJAM43 compo)

20200229_penguin3.gif Penguins - Made during a game jam (team project, but all graphics, animation & (shader) programming visible in this gif was made by me)

20200229_echocave2.gif Echo Cave (team project - did the gameplay programming & echolocation shader only)

20200229emwatesim/emsmall.gif Real-time Water Simulation - Unreleased prototype to experiment with compute shaders... (solo project)
