Streaming Games and Game Jam entries tonight

TL;DR; game jam/indie dev open mic night I play the games and give feedback everyone hangs out in chat.

Hey everyone! TigerJ here after not participating in any LDs since LD27 I was recently called out by a buddy of mine who talked me into Movie Game Jam over on itch. Since then I have started a twitch channel, and I am hosting a show where game devs and game jam participants can hang out together while I play their games (finished or not) and give feedback.

If you have a game you would like played or want just to hang out feel free to come by this evening (5 pm eastern time – 2 am) I will be streaming for a large window to accommodate many international devs.

Thanks so much! Keep making games! (I will be in the next LD with an entry)

To Do List BETA

Hello everybody! I've just finished developing my short horror game, TO DO LIST. I published the demo version in past 3 weeks ago and the beta version is out now! I hope you guys can test this game and give me some feedback on it. Download it here: https://epicblank.itch.io/to-do-list

Discord chat?

Is there a discord or similar chat for ludum dare?

Meta Game Jam (March 17-31) starts in 5 days - over 250 signups so far!

Hey LD jammers!

I'm hosting the Meta Game Jam from March 17-31, where you create a game about games (or a game that breaks the fourth wall)!

MetaGameJamLogo.png

There'll also be ~$100 in game prizes! :video_game:

PLUS we've organised >30 YouTubers and streamers to play your entries and give you great feedback!

Join Meta Game Jam ->

You can also join our Game Jammer Discord community and follow MetaGameJam!

I'm in!

This time instead of using Unity I've created my own game engine to use. This is a first time not using Unity so I'm curious how this will play out! The engine is written in C# and can be cross compiled to Javascript for playing in the browser, exciting stuff!

Stuff I'll be using: * My 'Juicebox' Engine * Aseprite / Paint.net * Visual Studio 2017 * Audacity / BFXR * Coffee machine

This will be my 13th consecutive Ludum Dare, and I'll be participating in the compo this time. Best of luck to everyone!

Confirming self-inclusion

Hey It's me Cyman. I'm doing this with my guy @Yecats. I'm doing this for the 4th time in a row, look at me go.

Tools I'm using

  • Love2d + Lua + Atom + some custom base code
  • A Novation Circuit and/or Ableton Live Lite

Yecats' arsenal:

  • Paint.net. exclusively. I think he might brush his teeth with it.

PSA: "Control the environment, not the player" and similar themes are terrible, don't vote for them.

I'm in I guess

Unfortunately I won't have all weekand 'cause I'll be out for most of Saturday. I'm going to use Unity but I don't want to make another arcade game. A puzzle game sounds sweet.

I'll try to post progress on my Twitter (@dubgron)

I'm In! (and TIPS)

With this being my 11th round of Ludum Dare, I'm starting to feel a bit like a veteran. My friend, who will be joining in to help me with audio and some general design, will be doing his 6th.

Without much further ado, here are two tips I've learned will help you get the most out of your jam this weekend.

1 << Keep your game little. I'm sure you've heard this by now, but it will seriously help you out. Literally everything you'll want to do will take longer than you might have thought it would. You very much want to leave room for polish.

2 << Publish to HTML. This way, everyone who's a lazy bum will still play your game, since they won't have to download it. I personally always have the game built for HTML, and there are about 10 times more plays in the browser than there are downloads.

The I'm In Post

So I'm in again for LD41 and really looking forward to it. This'll be my 8th LD!

I figured I'd approach this LD a little differently than how I normally would, and instead of thinking about ideas for each of the possible themes beforehand and then waiting for the theme announcement - I'm going to come up three or four different game ideas whose scope fits a weekend's work (the Compo) - and then shoehorn one of those ideas into the theme when its announced.

This isn't ideally what I would want, but I'm hoping it'll save me some precious hours tomorrow morning when I'd normally be struggling to come up with an idea.

I'll be using the Eclipse for Java dev with LWJGL.

Good luck to all

LDJ #40 Team post-mortem + IN

31052251em10215259388936102/em2045392107870355456_n.png

Hi there fellow jamers !

We are slowly awakening from our respective slumbers and reforming the team on our communication platforms (bless Discord guys, really). Some of us don't know if we'll be able to participate to LD#41, so our team has gained two new members. @Dyzzyd was working with Salty Corp for the last LDJ. You can follow them here [https://twitter.com/SaltyCorp] if you're interested in their work and their submission for the LD#41. You can also play their cool LD#40 game Beware the Slime here [https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/beware-the-slime] ! . He and Amalia (if she's available) will be working on the graphics and animation. Our second new member, @vrarr is a student programmer, good friends with Neodan. He'll be helping Neodan with the code, while Hippunk will be supporting them and taking charge of GD with Adrien.

Some members in the team have taken some time to reflect on our experience on LD#40.

-> @desdemone says : "I've personally loved to see everyone sweat during these 3 hard days. I was so proud of everyone's work at the end of it it was crazy. That being said, I really think we need to work more on communication and exchange with other jamers, and it really needs to come from everyone on the team. Taking some time after the jam can be hard I know, especially for the team working directly on the game. It's quite tiring to stay active after the three intensive days of work. However I really do thing we need to post more about our experience, to share the games we liked, to comment on other people's work. I know it felt extremely rewarding to see that people cared enough about our work to comment on it, post some advice or just say they liked or disliked what we'd been doing. I think I'll be asking more about other member's experiences during and after the jam. Above all, we ABSOLUTELY must remember this jam is international. Not everyone here has our stupid azerty keybord. CONTROLS, folks, I don't even know how we forgot this... Peace out :) "

-> @neodan says : "As a whole, it was a good experience for a first time, although I was quite out of it at the beginning. I realised that without a game deisgner to redirect the team when we turn away from the simplicity path it can be very hard to know where you're going and where to stop. I also think that spending an entire day brainstorming about the theme and the objectives of the game is very time consuming, and that maybe we should avoid it if we can. In any case, I really liked getting involved in this jam as a group, and with as less telecoms as possible, because they are time consuming too. Also, it was way more pleasant to be crammed into a little apartment ;) "

-> @hippunk says : "It's been a really fun way to meet cool people, gain experience and play a lot of games. It's really hard to rate those when you know the others have been working their souls off for 72h. I think the most disappointing part of our LD#40 submission was that it wasn't funny AT ALL. So we'll try to keep that in mind for the next one !"

-> @remysicality says : "Working on the sound design of a video game has been one of my ambitions for a very long time. Seeing it happening was really satisfying. It has been enriching and fun, and I'm glad to be participating to it again !"

So as you may have guessed, we're in for the LD#41 which starts tomorrow morning. Have fun guys, and good luck :D

Twitch Stream

As per the usual I will be streaming this Ludum Dare at https://www.twitch.tv/gnarlynarwhal7/. I'm not expecting anyone to watch, but thought I would post anyways.

Thats gonna be interesting

So, i got programming-artillery. Not the best option, but i can make a game out of it. I am going to start now and wish for the best.

I'm in!

Okay, woke up a bit later than I wanted to but think i'm finally landed on a theme for this. Let's a go.

Still struggling a little

Having a hard time with this theme, starting to question my decisions but gonna persevere - definitely going to be a looser interpretation of the theme than some of the other projects going on but just going to roll with it now I think. I'd rather get something done than nothing at all!

Unity / Maya - FBX Exporter

If there's anything i've learnt from this Game Jam it's how damn useful the FBX Exporter package is when working with Maya and Unity (presumably 3DS Max as well). Not an artist by any means, but it's a really awesome tool and I highly recommend any Unity / Maya folks working today to check it out if they haven't already. Download it on the Asset Store and plug it in.

Takes a few minutes to get used to but will really help speed up your workflow.

WebGL is ruining my day

When building for WebGL in Unity my game is developing a bug where the physics seems to get completely stuck and force the car in my game to go backwards all the time... Only happens in WebGL.

Gonna be a fun fix...

Carchery Released!

Okay so it didn't quite go as i'd planned and I went a bit loose with the theme but here's Carchery. A hybrid driving / archery game.

Carchery - Action 2.png

Had some issues with WebGL so the build is a little rough. Just happy to get something out at this point! Definitely room for improvement here but I had fun making it.

Feel free to give it a go below! WebGL only at the moment but i'll hopefully get a standalone build up and about after the Jam ends (tomorrow or something).

Play & Rate

I need more feedback about my game "Survival Quiz". I want, if you have the time, that you propose questions that I can add based on memes or something else. And thanks if you test my little game. 😃SequenceInGame2.gif

                                        Hope you enjoy !

Shuffle Climber - An Endless Card Game/Platformer!

Will you ever reach the top?

We appreciate any feedback you can give! Also be aware that luck, like in any card game, can be unforgiving ;)

Dungeon Solitaire (More like Platformer Solitaire)

I just think that if you like platformers and puzzles games you should really check my compo entry. Maybe not?

Anyway, finally got some free time to be posting this and also rating some games. Leave your love bellow. I mean... your links.

New Crux Swarm Post-Jam Version

0.4.0

All areas have been more or less completely redone, although the general shape of the world is still the same. * the world is roughly three times bigger than the jam version :D * some areas got some new art * lots of small bugfixes and tweaks * lots of new bugs I haven't discovered, no doubt

So that is pretty neat, I would say.

Also, I finally uploaded the vods to twitch, so you can watch the entire jam weekend from start to finish if you want to see exactly how I made some of this stuff.

tree_ascent.gif

That's quite an improvement over my last LD Compo!

And I even thought about skipping this LD because I didn't like the theme very much at first... Oh the irony.

LD41 Results.PNG

In the end I loved it. Creativity ruled and that's always nice to watch, there were a lot of great entries. Thanks for everyone who rated and played my game. I guess now I'll have to keep working on this title and try to release a full game as I promised. Cheers guys!

play.gif

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/dungeon-solitaire-1

PS: By the ratings I guess it's clear what I have to improve here, heh.

I'm in and ready to go!

I'm in! But as always when Ludum Dare begins something gets in the way and this time I have a bbq party in the evening 😑 At least I have also an idea for a game and I hope to finish prototyping it before going to the party

I use Unity, Visual Studio, Photoshop and BFXR.

If you want to you can follow me on Twitter (@dubgron)

Work into progress

It's the first Ludum Dare for half of the team so it will take some times for us to bring you news and pictures. But we are very excited and work hard to put some cool stuff in this jam !

There’s No Place Like Home

Finally!
This game took much more effort than I anticipated! A lot of mistakes were made but holistically I think I did well.

It's hard to tell which part of development was the toughest but this jam has shown me why I hate Unity.
But don't get me wrong. Unity allows to make really complex games in a short period of time which is a blessing at game jams. On the other hand it's poor structere irritates me and encourages to do lazy programming which I also hate.

But enough talking about game engines. It's Ludum Dare! It's about games not enignes!

So may I present "There’s No Place Like Home"

gifaaa.gif

The game is about an astronaut who fell out of a spaceship and his last desire is to die on his home planet – Earth.
I hope you'd like my game. And if you do, don't forget to rate it!

If you want to, you can follow me on Twitter @dubgron

I'm to excited!!! 30 minutes left

Way to ready tecnicly my 4th but i didn't get anything done last time Gona think small and gona make smal Don't realy have a lot of time but will work around that!!! and make an amazing game!!

Goin for Compo!

Already setting up everything for yet another Ludum Dare! I probably won't do much today besides from brainstorming on the theme.

This time I'll try to stream everything at https://www.twitch.tv/lexmelotti. Feel free to join me but be warned that the content is probably going to be in Portuguese (BR).

Never done this before, but I've been watching @honest-dan so much on twitch I got motived to try this out! You should certainly check his channel at https://www.twitch.tv/honestdangames.

I'll be using Unity and whatever else I get at my disposal for creating assets. Paint.net, Inkscape, MagicaVoxel, Bfxr, BoscaCeoil and Audacity are probably going to be my tools for that.

Sacrifices in the Cat Yard

Yay! Finished in time for Compo! I know the game is quite simple but it's just as I intended. Recording audio, making sprites and everything all by myself is quite challenging (but I love it). This time I even had time to make some polishing! I'm really proud of myself.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/sacrifices-in-the-cat-yard cat-catcg.gif

Oh, and this time I was streaming everything! Great success!

It's late now and I'm eager to have a shower and go to bed. Tomorrow I'll start rating some games.

Congrats for all Compos and Keep on Rolling Jammers, 22 more hours to go!

I'm in again

Here we go again! My third ludum dare, and I hope this to be the first one I’m able to finish! I will be using Unity3d and photoshop. Trying Compo this time.

I am in again for the weekend compo

Barely finished life tasks I had to do on friday, now its Saturday morning and I am here like...what tool am I gonna use anyway?

Goals: - Make something finished, short and weird, I cant do a proper movement controller anyway - Own art - photos? - own audio - my mic sucks so probably gonna go with synths

Tools:

  • engine ?? Unity/Twine/Bitsy based on the idea
  • Audiotool/ beepbox
  • camera/ online pixel tools

as unprepared as possible, but happy to be here again!

Two Hours to Go

Just thought I'd list some favourites of mine from this Ludum Dare:

  • Tumbleweed - This game is too high quality to be a jam entry.
  • READ THE LABEL - Pretty fast and text heavy.
  • Battery Panic - For me, this was the "God dammit why didn't I think of this" game concept.
  • Keep It Alive - I love the style, story and atmosphere of this one.
  • Efi - I really like how clean this one feels.

Feel free to vote on my game too if you have the chance.

Ludum Dare 49 - Live Streaming

Hi everyone, entered late to this contest, because my time zone is very behind. Here is the link to my live streaming - https://www.twitch.tv/kavitmht.

I am trying to build a game using JavaScript and Kaboom.js. Let's see how far can I do.

Thank you for the Tetris

First of all I'd like to thank everyone who has played and given feedback on my game. Also I just uploaded the post-jam version so if you're a fan of Tetris and haven't played Freight Frenzy yet I'd really recommend you to do so.

Freight Frenzy (post-jam version)

Screenshot_3.png

This was my 4th Ludum Dare and definitely the most successful yet. Personally I loved the theme Every 10 seconds and it only took me one and a half hour to have the game drawn out in my mind. For me this was a real dealbreaker as last time I spent the entire first day on an idea that I then had to scrap, which meant I only finished in time for Extra.

Playing all the other games this jam I was really happy to see how quickly the Godot community is growing, and for those who still use Unity I'd strongly recommend you to try Godot out. Among the games I played I had a few clear favorites:

  • Pincolour (a pinball game where the rules change Every 10 seconds)
  • Timeslime (an endless puzzle game where your previous actions repeat Every 10 seconds)
  • Time Loop Traffic (a racing game game where you have to reach a building Every 10 seconds while avoiding to crash into your previous selves)
  • Poda Wants a Statue (a real-time strategy game where you have to build a statue for Poda who gets angry Every 10 seconds)

Thanks for a really cool Jam and see you next time!

ADVICE FOR NEWCOMERS (REPOST/UPDATED FOR LD53)

I've participated several times, so I like to share my experience and gained knowledge with new jammers.

Get started early

In the jam, you're allowed to start with any base code. So, make anything you can. I keep Unity packages with basic features that have nothing to do with the theme, like pause/restart buttons. During final round for theme selection, look them over and come up with ideas for each potential theme. See if you can think of ideas that will work with more that one.

Scope your game properly

You have three days to make a game? Try to design something you can make in only one. It'll take twice as long as you think, so you'll actually finish it in two days. The final day is for bug testing and polish. If you manage to finish everything WAY early, you can expand on the completed game. It's better than rushing or running out of time.

Be healthy

Get sleep. Eat three meals a day. Spend time with your family. Staying awake for 72 hours isn't going to make your game good, and it's definitely not good for you're well-being.

Easy games are appreciated

Jammers will play your game for a minute or two, vote, and move on. Make games that can be played in their entirety in a short time, or at least will show the player all it has to offer.

Small teams are okay

My best games were made by myself or with one other person. Too many developers just get in each others way. If you have a large team, might want to consider splitting into smaller teams.

Accept and embrace criticism

Some people get defensive, but it's really not fun or helpful. Some jammers are afraid of being critical, fearing retaliatory bad votes. Critical feedback is the most honest and most helpful. Always remember, it isn't the player that doesn't understand your game, it's that you didn't understand your player.

Make a web build

It's the easiest way for jammers to experience your game for rating/reviewing, and that's the most important. People who aren't using specific OSes, or who just don't want to download hundreds of new games that they'll play once, will be very appreciative. You can still make downloadable builds as well, but at a minimum a web build should be made when possible.

Simplified controls

It's actually a bit surprising to me how many jammers don't have gamepads for their PCs, but we all have keyboards and mice. You should make your games at least playable with just those, and as simple/intuitive as possible. Pay attention to regular conventions, having to switch from WASD to arrow keys between games really interrupts the flow of rushing through many games. It's pretty easy to have your game controllable with both.

You have to play games, too

You aren't even in the ranking unless at least 20 people vote on your game. The best way to get voters on your game is to play, vote, and comment on other people's games. I make it a point to play the games of everyone who comments on mine.
