LD 40 December 1–4, 2017

Well, why not.

I haven't rated any games up to this point in the competition, although I was thinking about doing it over the winter break.

But, I didn't, and here I am -- 39 hours left to rate games, and I have a total of two ratings on my game.

I'm not going to ask for ratings or anything like that, because quite frankly, it's my own fault for not trying harder.

But I am going to start playing games in the hope that I will get a rating of some sort. However, I believe that I might get screwed over by the filter, which does not, as far as I know, prioritize games with high smart balance if they do not also have close to twenty ratings.

I suppose I shall find out. :)

Let's make the last day count - HTML5 play time!

html5200.png

Hi people, we are nearing the end of LD40 play+rate time, so please feel free to post your HTML5 games in the comments (sadly filtering for HTML5 submissions doesn't seem to work!). Also make sure to check out your fellow developers games :)

Some videos and reviews! Oh my!

JazzybeatsCoverage.png

We're still overwhelmed at how many people have checked out Jazzy Beats, which might even make it to 200 ratings soon. That's far more than anything that our team could have anticipated! Thank y'all!

So, we wanted to share a bit of the love and support we've been getting. Here's some people that have featured Jazzy Beats. You're the best!

Mug and Play, who even made a Jazzy Beats style character on the thumbnail! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O98TiD0zx7Y

Randomise User, who checked some other awesome games from the Jam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEapySEVwTE

Gubbzington's is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7oxWFefLYM

And here's AwesomeMe's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98bOJDKDQ2A

And last but not least, a review from Gamejam Curator. In their words, The art of this game has fascinated me, it’s very polished and with a lot of personality, which seems to be a usual feature in the games of Whales and Games. They have managed to give their game a very professional finish, so I'’ll definitely remain attentive to their future projects. We're overflowing with joy :)

Once again, thanks a bunch for the fun times on this jam. As the clock keeps ticking, there's still a lot of people who are below their rating goals, so be sure to give them a good chance just like you've helped us. We're still checking out games as well (when the team is not sick). Let's keep supporting each other! :whale:

Goodnight Sheep and Samurai Shaver!

Only 32 hours remain for ratings! It's your last chance to rate the TWO games that team Cocoa Moss made this jam! Give em a try -- they're totally worth it! But...you don't have to take my word for it: here are some good things other jammers have already said about our games!

Goodnight Sheep:

"Oh my goodness, this hit me in the chest. I’ve been there, lying awake, with spiraling thoughts and frustration. There was a time during college where this was me, and oh my. It brought me right back to it." --@serpentworks-games

"Man this one gave me some feelings! Great music, great sound design, and the emotional arc was really strong. I love how the music subtly changed in each segment corresponding to the tone of the thoughts too." --@adhesion

"It’s a beautiful cute little game with a heart warming narrative. The change in music as the mood in the dialogue changes is perfect, it made me wish I had the means to the same in my narrative game." --@youbestrong

goodnight-sheep.gif

Samurai Shaver:

"Fantastic entry! A one-button game shouldn’t be this fun! Awesome graphics, music and atmosphere. And just like IRL, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a perfect shave :D" --@cosmiccrystalgames

"Oh my god Rhythm Heaven is one of my favorite series ever and you’ve pretty much nailed it. All of the songs are super dope, and the art style is pretty and endearing." --@jjjjason

"Absolutely stunning, the music and art is quite remarkable and it’s always fantastic to see rhythm games in LD (since they’re so rare, at least to be done well!)" --@profan

Jam listing is apparently buggy

Second edit: There is actually a problem here -- when I refresh the page, the game listing switches to all jams, even if it was previously set to featured event. This is really annoying.

There's also a relevant issue on the github.

~~A couple of games just appeared in the "Smart" listing that apparently already have ratings? Here is an example.~~

~~This is personally super annoying, because I'm trying to rate games, and when rating is apparently randomly closed, that makes rating a lot harder.~~

~~It also means that my game is being pushed farther down the list, which is exactly the opposite of what I need right now.~~

~~Edit: Never mind, I figured it out. Apparently I managed to switch the listing to all jams. You can safely ignore this post.~~

Not long to go now!!

23 Hours left, let's try to get all those games out of danger zone!

I'm not making this post for you to vote for my game, I got way more rating then I'd hope for in my wildest dreams, but I know that many games still don't have the 20 ratings required to get a final score. I know many people must be spending time with their families or their new earned gift, which is great and I hope you all have a amazing time, but I believe their's no better gift for a game developer then receiving feedback on a game you made. All together, let's try to do a final rating push and try to give the as many rating (and I mean good feedback here ;P) Good end of the year to everyone and I wish you the best of luck!

Play and Rate the game here

It was our first ludum dare and we had so much fun creating this little game, haven't changed anything since the deadline so here are some tips : You can't close the Ad with the boot on it because reasons ( forgot to enable a script), you need 100k points in order to get a lootbox, you can only open one lootbox per play!

Have fun and thanks for all the awesome games created and all the feedback we received.

I would really appreciate if you rated my LD 40 entry - Wired Network.

While voting on all the great, especially creative submissions, we've been also whipping up new stuff for our LD40 entry Crimson Recon! Thanks to this community's overwhelmingly positive feedback, we've decided to continue this project and make it a fully fledged game! My game could use a few more votes. It's sort of a match-three style game, but not quite!

I'm a bit behind due to holiday vacation that happened shortly after voting began, and an illness that came with it that annoyingly persists. I'll be rating more games, and will try to get to the people who leave comments before voting closes, as well as a good chunk of danger zone games later this evening.

A problem, and a call to action

EDIT, and HUGE UPDATE: This is no longer a problem.

Apparently it's regular practice to switch the default filters back to Smart near the end of the rating period, and this has been done.

I apologize for my ignorance of this common practice, and for my potentially blowing things out of proportion. A combination of factors led me to believe that perhaps the only way I might be able to get these games rated is by putting the message out there like this, and, well, it worked, so I guess I wasn't entirely wrong.

In any case, much thanks to @pov for pushing out the changes. Everything should be well on its way now.

And, of course, now responsibility to get your game rated goes back to you -- if your game does not yet qualify for ranking, and you want it to, you best start rating some games.

There is a small-scale epidemic of games and users that are stuck in a very unfortunate predicimate: they have exactly zero real ability to get their game to twenty ratings.

Why? It's really quite simple: Ludum Dare is actively directing traffic away from their games.

Here's what's happening: the website is currently set with the Danger filter as the default filter for the game page. Users are actively encouraged to use this filter to rate games, and that is what they are doing.

But there is a huge problem with the Danger filter: it contains no variables that the author of a game can influence. There is simply no way for an author of a game to get on to the Danger filter without getting ratings, and -- here's the catch twenty two -- there's no way to really get ratings unless you are on the danger filter.

This leaves a set of users, such as myself, in a limbo where they can rate and rate and rate, and get very little return. It is important to note that it's not quite zero, but it's close enough -- I have been in the top eight of the Smart filter for the previous 10 hours, and have only received two ratings on my game as a result. See also this game, which has an absurd amount of given ratings for its pitiful 8 received.

Of course, a lot of the blame for this problem lies on myself and other similar users. But it is really frustrating to know that rating is still open, and yet there is nothing you can do to get ratings on your game -- despite the fact that there are people out there still actively rating games.

Because there's no way that the website itself is going to help out, simply because there's not enough time to discuss the relative benefits of having Danger games rated versus having games like my own rated, I have decided to take matters into my own hands.

Here's my plan: I will create a list of games in this situation on this post. Please comment if you are in a similar situation. The plan is then to have all associated users rate each others games. Hopefully there will be enough interested users that everybody's game will be rated.

I also am asking for about 15 other users to perhaps join in -- that is, stop rating Danger games, and start rating super-endangered games that have tried to participate in the rating themselves.

Note that I have not actually asked any of the other users in this list whether they will participate in this effort, so although I have noticed a couple of games in this situation and will be listing them here, I do not guarantee that any of these users will rate others' games.

Also note that some of these users have not yet rated twenty or more other games -- I'm using my own judgement to guess whether or not they are actively committed to participation in rating. I've tried to list the ones that have not yet rated very many games at the bottom.

Also note that the second game listed is my own, so be aware of any biases I might have. The ordering is otherwise mostly random; please try to rate these games randomly as well -- with the possible exception that games with a lot of ratings should be somewhat lower priority, as they are more likely to be caught up in the Danger filter. Of course, they should not be ignored, because nothing can be relied on in this situation.

Note that this list is basically just the entire front page of the "Smart" filter, so you could also try rating through there directly. I'm sure there's a whole bunch more games out there like this, but these games are the most imbalanced, according to Ludum Dare's filters.

If you are one of the games on this list, please rate the others. If everyone on this list rated everybody else's game, we would all have twenty ratings. I certainly will try to rate all the games on this list that I haven't yet rated.

I will try to mark out the ones that have reached twenty ratings as the day goes on.

Finally, to reiterate, if you are in this situation, please leave a comment.

Thanks so much.

Shepherdy! Herd sheep with extreme Jeopardy!

Winter is nearly over! With your trusty sheep dog Jess, search the hills, round up your sheep and bring them down to the safety of the farm. Watch out for ravenous wolves and deep icy lakes!

sheep1.gif

dog1.gif

wolf1.gif

Shepherdy! was inspired by the Herdwick sheep, an ancient hardy breed farmed for centuries in the English Lake District. The sheep are taken up to the high fells (hills) for the winter. In spring the shepherds round up their sheep and bring them back down the valley.

grab8-pp.gif

You need keyboard controls as well as mouse, so play on laptop or PC. Enjoy!

>>> Play Shepherdy! <<<

The game is an experiment in flocking algorithms. The sheep and wolves are governed by two different flocking behaviours. Basically, each entity moves towards the center of the herd and keeps an optimal distance from neighbouring entities.

For graphics we used Tinyspriteeditor and Gimp. Game sounds were created by us (mainly vocalisations and abuse of household objects), recorded on a smartphone and processed with Audacity. Music was done in the last hour before submission using LMMS.

Herdwick sheep have long thick fleeces and come in several colours including grey, inky blue and brown. During winter they wander the fells at heights of over 3,000 feet (around 1000 metres) and take care of themselves by foraging. They can weather the bitter winters and have been known to survive being buried under snow for days by eating their own wool. They were farmed for meat as well as wool. Herdwick mutton (meat) was served at the coronation banquet of Queen Elizabeth II.

ld40-sheep1-pp.png

The name comes from Old Norse herdvyck, meaning "sheep pasture". It’s thought they were brought to England by the Vikings.

ld40-landscape.png

The ewes teach their lambs which area of the fell (heaf) they should stay in. Herdwicks are still farmed today; thankfully the breed survived the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease that hit England and Wales in 2001.

ld40-sheep2-pp.png

We first thought the sheep dog should be a border collie but then chose a Rough Collie (like Lassie). Rough Collies originated in Scotland and Wales and have also been used for sheep herding in traditional hill farming. In the 19th Century Queen Victoria made the Rough Collie popular as a fashion accessory!

ld40-dog.png

However the Graphics Gremlin threw a spanner in the works and our Jess ended up as some kind of mongrel terrier!

dog1.gif

Go rate!

There are so many games that still need your help to reach twenty ratings! Go lend them a hand!

shoutout to @themonsterfromthedeep and their game which can be found here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/defense-2150-bc

Thank you to everyone!

This was my first LD and I gotta say, the experience was awesome! My game got 30 ratings, so I will get a score.

I was impressed by the awesome people that participated and left some good tips, with a lot of them telling me that I should continue to work on my game.

So, I've decided to make a post jam version. I plan to release it tomorrow and it will include pretty much everything people suggested:

-beloved bug fixes

-rebalanced prices

-centered houses

-the whole map on one screen(this means getting rid of the movement)

-moving water

-the ability to upgrade the boat and assign people from your island to chop trees for you

-a slightly improved ui

-pause menu

Again, a big thank you to everybody, you guys are awesome, I'm really looking forward to participating in more LD events!

Do advertisements dream of human consciousness?

It was our first jam at LD. Intense, deeply inspiring.

We managed to make a cyberpunk runner in the world where those nasty targeted advertisements are literally loaded to people’s heads.

Since it’s the final celebration of this great event, you, who haven’t tried our game AD-LIB: the Glitch Society, come on! Feel what it is to be the Creative of a small advertising agency in the world fully consumed by brain-eating monopolies.

A hint. The narrative part matters. Don’t just erratically close the pop-ups. There’s more story behind this atmospheric walk’n’clicker with electric dreaming touch.

To put it bluntly my game,Yuri the greedy spaceman doesn't have enough ratings due to me being tied up with school and christmas and whatnot and therefore not having time to play anyone else's games.

If you'd like to help I'd highly appreciate it but don't feel forced to.

If anyone comments a link to their game I'll try to play it but it's getting late here so it'll be a bit of a rush.

Help us get ratings!

Woke up after christmass and realized that we don't have enough votes to get final score. Please play our game! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/pumpkin-massacre end.PNG

Pirate Game

Sorry for pushing my game like that but I fear I have no other chance to get any ratings. Because of the danger mode only games close to the 20 are shown. I need like 10 more ratings. It would be also nice to know if the game doesn't work for you because it's my own engine which is only tested on a few computers.

The game is pirate game:

You are a pirate and the royal navy is after you. You need to destroy all enemy ships using you cannnon. I used a physics engine for the boat physics. I tried to make the movements of the ship to feel physically correct but also to be intuitive and not too complex. In a later yet unpublished version this a bit more balanced.

I hope you have fun playing: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/pirate-game

Previous category winner begging for reviews

Yeah, it's one of those posts. This is my 10th finished Ludum Dare game (proof) and the first time I'm risking not getting a rating because I've prioritized other things than playing and rating games. This whole autumn has been crazy!

Anyway, I hope you can help out, as I think the game is pretty fun (albeit frustrating) for a few minutes. That's all I can offer in return, though. :-(

I need Help!

Been so busy the past few weeks and just rememembered I had to rate some games this morning. I put a lot of effort into my game this time and I would really appreciate anyone who could give my game a rating so I can get a final result. I still need about 15 at this point. Anyone who leaves a comment I would gladly rate yours in return. And of course here is the link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/greed

Last chance to try Running With Scissors!

We at Aloft Studio had a lot of fun creating this piece for our very first Ludum Dare. We are overjoyed with the feedback we have received so far and we hope we can continue to work on this little project even more in the future.

There were a lot of awesome submissions and we were glad to play so many of them. I personally enjoyed watching so many submissions being played by various streamers and listening to the great feedback given. The atmosphere created by the LD community is phenomenal, and from us at Aloft Studio, we hope to contribute by bringing you even better submissions next Ludum Dare!

Cheers to all of the participants and have a wonderful New Year!

Try my game: Dodgebomb!

Dodgebomb is a fun game about, well, as you probably already guessed, dodging bombs. I would really truly appreciate it if some more people could rate my game as i need about 8 more votes and we have less than 24 hours to play+rate games, and I would like to get a score.

If you choose to try out my game, I thank you.

Seriously, thank you to everyone who played and rated for all the feedback-- I feel like we get a little faster at this each time we do it. Thanks to the LD folks for the new layout (adding the ability to upload pics and videos in the comments was an AWESOME addition). A very very special thanks to people who posted videos or played on Twitch; that kind of stuff is invaluable in seeing exactly how people approach playing our games.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday and as always we are very happy to be a part of this awesome community of artists. To one more year of making games!

My Top 3

So we got to play a total of 27 or so games this LD and we wanted to just give a quick run down of our favorite games and concepts.

These games went for kinda the same thing and have alot in common-- one would probably be my clear favorite if it was a little less punishing, but ultimately I could not decide which to leave off this list because they are both top notch. Great pixel art, funny, very fitting for the theme. Seriously, the compliments I would could give each game are eerily similar but it was great to see two different takes on the same satirical notion.

Building the Character Logic in Jazzy Beats!

ProgrammingBanner.png

These weeks certainly went fast, didn't they? It's kind of amusing to think that judging phase ends in less than 24 hours! However, we at Whales And Games still feel like there's still so much we could talk and post about the game's development that we didn't get the chance to cover during this judging phase (for a multitude of reasons).

In similar fashion to how our graphics designer has written a devlog about creating the characters and the art direction and to how our music's composer wrote another in-regards to his workflow and challenges in composing music, now it's my turn to talk about the programming structures and methodologies I used for developing the different character's logic in our Ludum Dare 40 game - Jazzy Beats.

Whales And Games  Unity

Programming1.png

For Jazzy Beats, we decided to stick to what we know and use Unity as the engine to develop the game once again. It's been my tool of choice for almost four years now and I've used it on the past four Ludum Dare's we've participated on. As such, it's an engine I've grown comfortable with, both in terms of workflow, as well as in terms of it's scripting structure (built on top of C#). As for the IDE itself, I use Visual Studio, not only because of all the tools and integrations it offers when paired with Unity, but also because of how standard of an IDE it is for pretty much everything programming, be it standalone programming, be it with other game engines.

Even so, after all these years using the Unity engine and programming, I still find myself learning better and different ways of getting around, and improving my methodologies when it comes to managing code. Looking back to just a few months ago, when we were updating our Ludum Dare 36 game, Colossorama, for it's anniversary update I ended up spending a great amount of time just restructuring some of it's early code in order to optimize it and make it easier to introduce the new mechanics we wanted to add with the new update.

ProgrammingVS.png

The point is, even while working with the same engine for years, you always end up learning more and further stuff that always helps you refine your future projects as you go, and the past projects we've developed were what allowed us to develop Jazzy Beats as it currently stands. One of the programming aspects that ended up being the most important for the game's development that I only really understood the flexibility as off recently, for example, was Inheritance.

The Power of Inheritance

Although Jazzy Beats' behaviours and characters aren't anything ground-breaking or extraordinary, without some code management and methodologies, it would have been hard to develop and iterate on every single character's behaviours at the iteration rate necessary during a game jam.

As a consequence, one of my priorities when it came to the game's development was the code's re-usability, especially when several of the character's actions are shared between all of them - be it the Player, the Enemy, or the Fans. One basic example of these actions was the basic punch, which all of these past three characters feature. In order to aid with this re-usability, one of the things I turned too was abstraction and inheritance.

Programming2.png

Some of the most basic actions are shared between all of the characters, be them controlled by the player or not. For example, all of the characters use and require components such as a Rigidbody2D, and have variables such as health, damageDealt, velocity and feature functions such as TakeDamage()and Knockback(). All of these functions are shared between all of these characters and feature no differences. However, functions that require more specific functionality depending of the character, such as Movement()and Attacking()are marked as abstract and are later overridden, and filled in depending on the character we're working on.

As such, all of the characters on the game derive from one base and template abstract controller known as the CharController which has all the base fields and functionality for a working character. This controller is later inherited and expanded into new and more specific controllers such as the PlayerController in which, for example, the abstract function Movement()is overridden with the code used for recognizing the player's input. These controllers are also expanded with new functions exclusive to that character, such as ApplySparkAttack() function, which allows the player to use their ranged attack and which is exclusive to their controller only.

ProgrammingSpark.png

This allowed any specific base check or tweaking to be made to all the characters at once, if justified, or specifically tweaked according to the functionality of each individual character. With this structure, I was able to save time with several of the programming tasks that would have been needed if I tried to make separate individual controllers for each of the characters.

However, inheritance is always a mold-able and relative. While writing this section, I can think of several points in which this design and template could be improved further upon. However, given the time limit, you can't be a perfectionist in regards to it either. Don't let code perfectionism hold you back while there are features you could be implementing at that moment, but make sure that your code is maintainable to the point you can quickly make changes and adaptations to it.

Character Controllers & Pseudo-AI

With inheritance applied to the characters, the next step was to start connecting this controller structure to the actual gameplay logic of the characters. As referred in the last section, since the base CharController class Movement()and Attacking()functions are marked as abstract, each of the extended controllers have their own different logic for that same function.

For the PlayerController these functions mostly check which input the player has done, such as applying a velocity to the Rigidbody2D depending on the axis that the player is currently inputting, and deploying different attacks depending on their button presses. Not too shabby and a set of controls most likely similar to what most Ludum Dare contestants did with their games as well.

It's worth side-noting that, for the concern of getting up to speed with Player input and being able to include Gamepad Support out of the box, we used the Unity plugin Rewired as an input wrapper, instead of the default one. It's a great extension that I absolutely recommend to everyone that has been struggling with expanding Unity's input for a while now.

ProgrammingRewired.png

However, it's when it comes to other characters that the controllers need to be thought of differently. As opposed to the Player, neither Enemy nor Fans have a direct input, meaning that all their actions and decisions needed to be made through code. As such, both of these feature what I like to call a pseudo-AI through a set of checks that are made to see what types of actions the controller should make depending on their situation. I call it pseudo-AI because their decisions are made up of conditional statements, rather than an adaptive artificial intelligence algorithm (such as machine learning ~~which would be insane for a game jam~~).

The most basic example of these condition checks is with the EnemyController. For Bluessom's movement and attack patterns, she will check for any opposing-affiliation Fans (in this case, Player fans) in a wide zone around her and target the one closest to her. Depending on the attacks that are currently available and not on cooldown, she will roll a random number to decide which attack she should use on the currently target fan, and will continue attacking them until they eventually turn over to her side again. Since the amount of fans quickly ramps up during the game, eventually, one Bluessom's attack will hit more than one fan at a time, converting multiple fans in one ago.

ProgrammingAI.gif

The FanController works in a similar fashion to the Enemy one, except instead of Fans moving only when one of the idols is near them, they'll will always be walking towards the idol opposed to their affiliation (Bluessom's - the Enemy - fans will always move towards Jazzchan - the Player). They'll stop when it's time to perform an attack, at which point they'll perform the same base attack (the punch) that both the main characters have, followed by a cooldown to avoid them constantly doing the attack. Fans don't have any other attacks such as the kick or a ranged attack as to avoid having the player having to think on dodging different Fan attacks, making their main focus avoiding and converting fans as fast as possible.

One of the earlier issues we faced upon once the fan count started increasing was that all the fans targeting a specific idol would eventually converge into a single moving line since they'd all be moving towards a single point (the Player's position) at the exact same velocity. In order to circumvent this, we introduced a slight random variation in their movement speeds (rolled when the fan is spawned), together with a position displacement that's added to their target's position, making each fan target a point around the character, rather than the character's absolute position itself. These two variations alone are enough to make Fans walk and 'mob' in a much more believable fashion.

ProgrammingMovement.png

Finally, for the actual hit-checking when one of the characters performs an attack, each of the controllers will perform a box cast in front of their feet to check for any opposing-affiliation colliders in a small zone in front of them. These box casts are placed by their feet as due to the game world's perspective, as making a box cast of the same size as of the player would make the check return characters that, perspective-wise, seem above the player.

Pictured is the example of these box casts for the different attacks performed by the player. The yellow box represents the zone checked when the player performs a basic punch and the red one for the kicking. Finally, the green circle shows the area of fans converted when the player performs a Ultimate Sax Drop.

ProgrammingHit.png

As a somewhat trivia piece, one of the original designs we had in mind for the Ultimate Sax Drop involved the play having to perform multiple combos in order to charge it before being able to use it. However, concerned that it could create a contrasting design with the other abilities, we eventually decided to stick with having a cooldown for it.

Unfortunately, this ended up making the Ultimate a safe-guard ability, causing most players to just stick to just using it by late-game, and avoid using it during the remainder of the game. Most of the feedback in regards to the game turns around this, which goes on to prove that, sometimes, playing risky in terms of the design can be a much more rewarding, and it's a note we will take in mind for future jams.

The Game Manager & State Management

And, finally, the last thing important to the management of the characters is the ~~dungeon master~~ GameManager! The Game Manager is a singleton entry that is responsible for managing the overall state of the game and keeping references to other, single-entity objects that are used through the game.

One example of these objects is the FanSpawner which will continuously spawn more Fans (which always start with affiliation to the Enemy) as to ramp up the game's difficulty as the game progresses. Having the game starting with only a single Fan allows the player to get a general understanding of the controls before reaching late-game where they have to take multiple Fans into consideration. The FanSpawner will stop spawning new Fans when the total count of them in-game reaches 40 - because y'know, it's Ludum Dare 40.

ProgrammingFans.png

To avoid performance and other issues - especially in WebGL - as the amount of Fans spawned increases, the higher the chance of them spawning without an AudioSource becomes higher. This not only saves a lot of memory allocated exclusively to audio (which was causing some music cut-off issues in early development), but also stops the player from hearing 40 different AudioSources all playing footsteps at the same time.

Finally, the GameManager also keeps track of the current GameState which check what state the game is currently on between three different states (Starting, OnGoing and Over). These states exist to stop the remaining objects in the game of performing certain tasks when they're not supposed too (like the FanSpanwer spawning Fans after the game is Over or Starting). Likewise, the character controllers also check this state for this very same reason, and will, for example, stop characters from moving once the game is Over.

ProgrammingGame.png

Some food for thought for the future is creating a state system for game characters. This would allow for more complex logic and conditions that are not exclusively limited to conditional statements, without potentially creating much additional workload when it comes to programming character and character actions during a game jam.

ProgrammingFlair.png

And that pretty much wraps up this overall programming post! Getting it out in time was one big challenge due to the snowball of occurrences that happened during the whole of the judging period, but here it is, even if it's just a few hours from the end of judging phase. We still have our Timelapse and Post-Mortem on the way which we hope to make available as soon as we can. However, those will most likely have to wait until after the judging to see the light of day.

In behalf of our team thanks for keeping up with us during this Ludum Dare. Yesterday, when @Moski made a post about the coverage we got during this edition, we were baffled that we had almost made it to 200 ratings. However, as of today, we've managed to smash that very goal! A whale of thank you to everyone who has made that possible and to everyone which has played our game during these last three weeks. The feedback and engagement by all of the other developers was amazing and completely broke all of our expectations. :trumpet: If you haven't had the chance to play and rate Jazzy Beats yet, now would be the perfect time to do it!

If you'd like to keep up with us at Whales And Games after this Ludum Dare ends, we have our very own Discord channel! It'd be wonderful to see you there! Again, Thank you! :whale:

Help to Get rid of it!

Hey guys! Rating hours are coming to a close and I still need some ratings for my game! I have rated enough games, but I fear that the natural rating balance won't let me reach the 20 ratings out in time! (And I don't have time to rate more games since I have to go to work)

Would really appreciate it if some of you could give my game a go! It's playable on web and it's short, so it should not take too long :)

Neon Hell - Gameplay (with classic controls)

Just a short video of my game with the "Classic" control scheme. You can switch to the "Direct" control scheme directly on the main menu.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaFXcGzXuW4 (make sure to watch the video at 60FPS, though the youtube compression doesn't help with the visuals).

Play here for yourself: http://www.fatihtavukcu.de/ludumdare

Video description from youtube: Neon Hell is a Shoot 'em up / Bullet Hell like game that I had initially developed over a 48 hour period for the Ludum Dare 40 competition.

On display is version 0.2.4.1

Classic controls:

Rotate clockwise/counter clockwise by pressing the left and right arrow key, press up arrow to accelerate.

Direct controls:

Your ship will follow your keyboard input. As long as you keep the key down it will accelerate in that direction. Tapping once on an arrow key will quickly rotate in the desired direction instead of a slow turn.

Keep in mind: Gravity will pull you down and as long as you are accelerating you will turn slower!

Other controls:

Hold SHIFT to shoot and switch weapons with the X key. You can see your currently selected weapon in the bottom left corner.

You have a short boost at your disposal by pressing CTRL. Keep in mind that your boost can only be used when fully recharged (bottom right corner).

Tips and tricks:

  • If you should leave the arena an indicator in the shape of your ship will appear on the center of the screen to indicate in which direction your ship is currently facing. Use this help to quickly return to the arena before your ship takes too much damage.

  • Every destroyed enemy increases your multiplicator, which is applied to every single enemy kill. The multiplicator slowly fades away and once vanished it will reset. But beware, the higher your multiplicator is, the quicker enemies will spawn.

  • Enemies always spawn in 2 or 3 packs.

  • The plasma cannon has high damage and quick fire rates. Use it to quickly destroy your enemies.

  • The photon cannon's projectiles are very slow but destroy enemies in one hit, but the low fire rate makes it unsuited to use against a big number of enemies. It's also quite useful to keep your multiplicator going.

  • The machine cannon is the least powerful weapon, but unarmored enemies do not stup these high performance bullets, thus they pierce through them and highly irritate enemy pilots.

  • Enemy pilots will only shoot at you if you are in front of them. Shooting them will irritate them and make them lose control so that they can not target you properly anymore.

Happy new year!!

Hey guys!!

This is my last post in this LD40, so I wish u all a happy new year 2018!! for more and better ludum dares!

Other times I tried to post some of my experience, improve my entry with images, videos,.. but this time I had some problems (I was 3 weeks without internet, I moved to another house,...)

workingdeath resized2.gif

You can play and rate Working Death -> here <-

See you at LD41 !! (I hope)

Thank You and PSA

Well, my game has reached twenty ratings. Honestly didn't expect that to happen when I started rating games this late into the voting period, but it did. Thanks to everyone who rated, and to @pov for helping out us super-late-bloomers by switching the default filter back to Smart.

And, now that I can safely say that I don't need more ratings, I have a PSA:
Please only rate games that do not yet have enough ratings to be ranked.

Certainly it's nice to have a couple extra ratings, as that lets you know that your ranking is more statistically legitimate. But rating games that are already ranked takes precious time away that could be spent getting more games to be ranked in the first place.

Games that are already ranked do not need your rating; your rating will at the very most change their score by 4/21, a value less than 0.19 -- and that's only if they have the minimum of twenty ratings, and you rank it at the opposite of its current score. Your influence only gets less and less as the number of ratings they already have goes up. Certainly this influence is not zero, as 0.19 can very well change a game's ranking, but it's far less influence than the influence you have in changing a game's ranking from "unranked."

In a similar effort to help get more games ranked, I've put the following message at the top of my game:
markdown **Hey -- I already have twenty ratings. Instead of rating this game, try rating [some other game](https://ldjam.com/games/smart/all) that doesn't yet have enough to be ranked. Thanks!**
and I encourage others who have been ranked to put similar messages at the top of their pages.

Finally, I would also like to request that if you do already have a ranking to not ask for more ratings. The reason I say this is because I have witnessed in the past few hours some games with a large number of ratings ask for more and get them, when the time spent on those ratings would be much more meaningful if spent rating games that have not yet been ranked. I make this request basically in the interest of the community, and to some extent in my own interest, as just a few hours ago I was also unranked.

Thank you.

My Game: Overdose

Please review my second LD jam entry. http://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/overdose

SCRAMBLED - Need a few ratings to hit the minimum

Time's running out. I was out of the country right after LD40 ended and didn't get a chance to rate games until yesterday and today, so we've been doing the mad rush to play and rate as many as we can in 2 days. However, it looks like with 15 hours remaining, we still need a few more eyes to take a look at our entry before time runs out.

Check out our game!

Scrambled - A Tale of Removed Features

It all began back on the first night. We knew we wanted to experiment with some new things we hadn't done: - We decided for the first time to not use Unity's Character Controller, and build our own, cobbled together with bits and pieces from different things I've learned over the years or written. - We wanted to try our hand at a flying enemy. - We wanted to implement swimming and underwater enemies. - We wanted to do something that was a bit more of a collect-a-thon. - We wanted to try something that involved actual named characters this time.

We had vision for a few enemies - the bird, and the bucket night, and some underwater creatures. Our 2D artist mocked them, and our 3D artist implemented them.

The Bird

ldembirds/emc[1].png unknown[3].png

The Bucket Knight

bucket_knight[1].jpg unknown[1].png

Those guys made it into the game. We had custom post processing for water, sound effects for jumping in and out of water, and that didn't make it in. We had a caravan, and a talking character that we cut at the last minute, and we had a swimming fish and underwater bombs that didn't make it in because we didn't have time to make underwater areas.

unknown[3].png

We had a custom inventory written, with items such as an underwater diving helmet implemented, buckets, and torches, but we just didn't have time to build more than the initial level. We have about 30 assets and models we made during LD that didn't make it into the game: bridges, arches, decorators, etc.

unknown[1].png

So we ended up with a game that is a strange amalgam of random things shoved into one level that we polished as well as we could with the time constraints we had. Start the game, collect 10 eggs, and bring them back to the pan. But be careful - every egg you pick up spawns more birds, and they will be getting angrier and angrier if you are carrying multiple eggs.

We're pretty happy with what we have. It's not what we set out to do, and we have a ton of unused content we want to use for a Post-LD polished version later on.

It's not our best entry that we've done in the past couple of years, and there's clearly things that need improvement, but overall, for a first-person 3D game with 2 separate characters, music, voices, etc, we're pretty happy with what we got done in those 3 days.

Check out our game!

That said, if you don't rate SCRAMBLED, our game will be as dead as this poor bird :(

We need everyone at the "Vote" station!

Hey fellow developers! So after partying for a month since tough days of Ludum Dare development, our team took notice that Rate section is already closing up and our game is yet far from 20 ratings!. And now we desperately giving feedback to other games.

If you could give us your expirience of our game (and rating would be incredibly amazing too :) ) so that we would improve it in further development, you will be blessed by RNGJesus for 21 minutes! And of course by our appreciation and love.

[Currently not true] Currently sitting in the lobby of a multiplayer game.

Hung out there for a while; thank you everyone who showed up! I recommend this type of post to anyone trying to play an online multiplayer game.

----- original post -----

I'm chillin' in @alexrose's game, Rude Bear Rabble, right now, and I'll keep it open for at least a little longer. If anyone happens to be reading the news feed right now, come join me! (I have someone who's promised to play later, but I figured I'd hang out here in case anyone else was trying to rate it.)

If anyone else knows any multiplayer games that need votes, let me know and we can check them out together too.

My game is also a multiplayer game that needs votes, but it's also a standard-deck card game, so we can't really do it here. Here's the link if anyone wants to check it out.

Snaketris post-mortem

Well, enough time have passed since a submission, so I think it's post-mortem time (it's gonna be a long post)!

First of all I want to thank GameDevNSK team for local event they organized for developers to take part of LD and even to stay and code all the night. You made Ludum Dare a 500% more fun!

It was the second my LD (the first was 36th and I didn't manage to finish my game) and the first one with a team. Our team consisted of three linuxoid students with almost no game development background (@komnotmr and I once made a clone of Nidhogg with Phaser.js for our web-dev university course, but it was a one single bug of a game, so doesn't count). However, I was sure we will make it right to the end and here is what we got.

Day 1

When a theme was announced, two of us were on our way to a place (the event took place in a wonderful building of Technopark, see a picture below), so we started to brainstorm in the car. Throwing away all the rubbish, we ended up with four acceptable ideas. Most of them needed tricky sprites to be drawn so, as no-one of us were an artist, we decided to pick the idea that challenges our programming skills and don't require much graphics. Here is where Snaketris begins.

pm_technopark.png

We presented our idea to other 7 teams (6 of them have published their games, check here) and started to code. We agreed to use Phaser as two of us were somewhat familiar with it and also not to care too much about architecture, modularity and stuff like that. So, architecture was pure and simple: a tile field, input handling in 'update', two classes (for snake and for tetrimino) and one 'tick' function in a loop that handles all the mechanics.

pm_drawings.png

When @dolorosso came we were already locked and loaded. First of all we occupied a comfortable couch, created a GitHub repo and set up Phaser. Then we split up: @komnotmr was busy with snake (and created the best falling animation ever. So inspiring!), @dolorosso was learning JS and making tetris work properly, I was busy with rendering and connecting two games in one. By 1:00 a.m. we had an image.

pm_buggy.png

When this sprites was drawn we came up with an idea to make it look kinda Chineese-styled with golden dragon and a bamboo, but, as I mentioned before, there were no artists to help us. As for a code, things were runnding pretty smoothly, yet independently. There were lots of things to link, features to add and, of course, bugs to fix. Most of people around have already went to sleep, Aleksey was playing Super Mario 64 on his Orange PI when we were coding and merging like Pepsi-powered robots. By 5 a. m. we finally fallen asleep in our bean bags.

Day 2

The day begun with breakfast and a quick game of go. Feeling fresh and charged then we continued our development. Long story short, we made our game playable right in time to introduce it to the other participants. The only problem we encountered was a difficult merge gone wrong, turning a game into a black screen (lesson #1: never put everything in one function), but we addressed that problem. By the time of presentation, we had a game with gameplay, fancy squares and even some sounds to present.

pm_presentation.jpg

After a presentation we had some time to play each other's games and to get some feedback. Some people said that the game was too difficult, but everyone who tried to play it team said it was fun! After a while the event was over and we went home satisfied and inspired.

Day 3: polishing

We really didn't want to spend one more day on this game, but dammit, we didn't want to publish unfinished job either! So, the next day began with a massive bug genocide (well, it appeared to be more like an assasination rather then genocide because there were only four of them and they were hidden very well). By two p. m. I met @komnotmr and we decided to put a little more effort into our game to make it look finished. He made all the pictures for tutorial screen and also added particle effects while I was busy with logo, game over screen and HTML-layers above our game's canvas. The game was published at 3 a. m. the next morning.

Conclusion

Ludum Dare 40 was so much fun to participate! I definitly want more and will be here for LD42 (yeah, seems like I'm skipping the next one). Here are some things I learned from our work:

  • As someone already said in his post-mortem, making games is hard. Teamwork is even more harder because you need to explain your point, make compromises and just read someone else's code. But together you can do far more work and achive something you can hardly achive solo.
  • It's better to share a room with your teammates rather than work remotely on voice chat.
  • Multiplayer games are rated less often because less people can play it.
  • Graphics and sound are soul and spirit of jam games. The better they are, the more people plays your game. Ironically, this two aspects are the weaknesses of our game. =)

Thank you for reaching this point. =) Leave your feedback, play Snaketris, make your own games. Hope to see you on oncoming jams. Here's wumpa-shower for you!

Do game designers dream of AAA visuals?

This jam we were like, hell, it’s less than three days and we can’t draw anything better than a match-like dude runs wickedness. Something like this: (a painting of a match-like dude runs wickedness)

wickedness.jpg

So, we stuck to our best. Gameplay, sound, narrative.

And advertisements. I was writing some back in the days before finally dropping that 99 francs act for GameDev.

Aye, we’re searching for the artist. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do memorable stuff on our own. This is AD-LIB: the Glitch Society for you, the game where ads are worst worth watching. With music and the mood inspired by movies like They Live, Johnny Mnemonic and Blade Runner.

A hint. There’s a poem in one of the ads! See?

vir2_4.jpg

So, if you’re an artist, and you like the way we think, please, write us.

Do play and rate the AD-LIB more!

Just 4 more to go!

Here I am on the last day sitting with 16 votes. I would greatly appreciate anyone who could help me out and give my game some votes. I worked really hard this time around and would really hate to see my game not hit the 20 votes I need.

Of course I can return the favour to anyone else still needing votes.
