LD 40 December 1–4, 2017

I'm In

First time doing a jam :D

I'm in!

First ever game jam! Going to use GMS, GIMP and Bosca Ceoil

I'm in! ...Mostly.

So LD39 was a complete disaster. Dropped out after night one because I couldn't get in the right frame of mind. So here we are at LD40, and I'm excited. And calm. And ready. I'll have an interruption tomorrow but hopefully that won't eat up more than 2 hours of my time. We'll see though.

My tools: Engine: Unity Graphics: Aseprite (maybe quick Pyxel Edit testing) Sound: Bfxr and Audacity Music: Bosca Ceoil

Let's see what the theme brings, and good luck to all participants!

I guess I'm in!

LD always come to my knowledge on such a short notice that I never join thinking that I'm "unprepared". I guess it's time to put an end to this procrastination.

I'm not even sure what I'm going to use though...

Good luck and have fun everyone!

This is just to say

I have downloaded

the game engine

that was on

unity.com

and which

I will use

for

this jam

forgive me

I cannot program

in C++

and I suck

LUDUM DARE 40!

I'm new to the Ludum Dare contest, but I'm super exited to participate! I'm not really trained in any good coding programs, but I'm going to try my best!

I'm in!

This is my first LD,i plan to use these tools:Unity,Maya,PS,and some Unity plugins form asset store. Have fun!

GoodLuck to Everyone

Best of luck to all of you my fellow game developers! Follow my progress under my blog on my website: www.terrydarcy.eu

First LD!!

I'm using libGDX, illustrator, and fl-studio!!

Trying to get motivated! I'm in!

It has been pretty hard to feel motivated... But that doesn't mean I'm not trying!

I'm In Too

I would like to make a game.

We're in! Jamnation Game Studio

This is our first Ludum Dare together and we're very excited!

We're game design students at Federal Institute Eng. Paulo de frontin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Tools - Unity - Blender, Adobe Photoshop - Hack'n'Plan - FL Studios

18c524e5-8c8b-42bd-8922-86daa3c04528.jpg

I'm planning to do LD40, plus code base announcement.

My code base is here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/2017/04/21/announcing-code-base-for-ld38-flixel-project-template-publicly-available-for-ludum-dare-use/#hidepopup

Plus, I might try using this LD to learn more about Unreal Engine 4. It's possible though unlikely, since I'd prefer to have a small web-playable game.

Im In

Hey guys ! Second time for me and im excited to top my first game with LD40 :)

I'M IN!

Ye old classic "I'M IN!" post.

It's time to get funky my dudes!

I'm streaming here: http://www.twitch.tv/endesga

I'm in! :D

Waiting 16 minutes for theme and then going to sleep. Starting in the morning! Gonna use Unity, Gimp, Paint .NET, BeepBox(not 100% sure, still pretty new with BB)

LD 40

I'm in! I will be using Unity3D with maybe Fungus and Blender and Krita. I will be Solo!

I'm in.

First ludum dare for me, I'll be using: Unity/c# Visual Studio GIMP Bfxr soundation.com

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My GameJam Philosophy

We're almost ready to get started and with so many new jammers I figure its worth sharing my philosophy when it comes to doing Gamejams.

As of 2017 Ive participated in (I think) ~5 game jams and Ive had varied levels of success. So Im by no means an expert on these things but I think theres some pretty solid approaches when it comes to a gamejam that can help a lot - all of which Ive learnt through my experiences doing gamejams like Ludum Dare.

codepreview2.png

My Approach/Philosophy:

1) Core Gameplay/Feature Focus

Focus on one single core feature for the game that will be fun. True for any game really, ie in Sonic the core feature of the game is him running really fast. The rest of the game is built around that (fun) mechanic. Or the portals in portal are another great example. It doesnt have to be complicated, but this is where you can focus on the fun/innovation categories of voting - not to mention putting together a solid game in general.

2) Game Foundations

Try to aim to get the foundations for the game done in the first 24 hours (and by that I mean main gameplay and controls, the win condition, lose condition, basic menu etc). Then the final 24 hours are polishing, adding more content, adding music and sfx etc. I dont think Ive every actually hit this goal, but its a good one to aim for as it means you focus more directly on that core feature and game states right from the start. You dont want to be implementing the lose and win conditions of the game in the final hour while half asleep and trying to build your final submission, trust me.

*3) Identify Weaknesses *

Be aware of your weaknesses/timesinks and be prepared to compromise. Easier said than done I know, but if you know something will slow you down try to be as aware of it as possible. If you notice during the jam youre spending too much time on a feature or area of work, compromise on it and wrap it up - get onto the next big of work asap. If you dont know what slows you down, reflect after the gamejam on areas you got stuck with.

4) Promotion & Accessibility

Ive struggled with this in the past, using the game engines Ive used in the past plugins were needed to run in-browser, or a download of the game has to be put up - which isnt the most accessible or motivating. I know Id rather just hit a link and get right into it. It doesnt clog up my PC with downloads either I dont have to unzip/manage/find files etc. Its lazy but its how things are when you want to play 100 games after a game jam. Im always extra keen to play a game if its one click away.

Promotion is a no brainer too, but super important. Through the gamejam I try to do a few posts and show off some nice gifs or video, it gets the game out there and people interested even before the jam is over. I also try to make a nice looking splash screen, because that will draw people in to test and play your game, which is crucial in the voting round. Making a game trailer after/during the jam is also a good way to show off the game along with doing post-mortums and posting timelapses of the whole thing.

5)Sleep!

...At least in the first 24 hours anyway. I always aim to get decent sleep in the first 24 hours, and then (if possible) pull an all nighter for the last 24 hours and push some serious game dev hours. Youve always got the next day to have a good sleep and recover, so optimise that time spent developing your game. I know theres a lot of different suggestions when it comes to this, but this is whats worked for me in the past.

The biggest successes in when it comes to gamejams is learning more about your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to game development and everything related to that. Its always a good exercise in self reflection.

I hope my tips help someone!

Goodluck to everyone for LD40!

We're in !

Hi everyone !

My good friend Kevin and I (Robin) are ready for LD40 !

We're really excited.

I'm in! LD40

I'm in! This is our 3rd LD Jam. 2 bros making games with Unity 3d, Adobe CC, Ableton Live 9.

We're in!

We're a small crew of friends and we'll be using Unity, MS Visual Studio, and our imagination to make a game this time :P

I'm gonna give it a go.

It's my first time taking part in the Ludum dare but going to try to enjoy the experience.

Not much of a game dev either but in it for the fun.

Here for my first Ludum Dare

Looking forward to noodling with some games! Planning on using Gamemaker and Bfxr. Nothing fancy.

I'm in yet again!

I'm in! Looking forward to this, this will be my 28th time doing ludumdare (like 32nd if you count mini-lds and stuff)...

deskphoto-2017.jpg

Lots of things have changed since I started but the desk has stayed more or less constant.

I'm in

I don't really know what this "I'm in" thing is about or if I'm doing it right but I'll follow the crowd. This is my 2nd jam. I'll be using either unity or my recently-hacked-together js-based vehicle/steering engine, depending on the theme and my mood.

I'm in

I'm in.

Real pumped. Let's do this.

LD40 - Here we come!

Our team is in for LD40! We're going to try tackling a more complicated 3D game.

Our Team

@aurel - Game Architecture

@linear - 3D Modeling and Coding Witchcraft

@thomas-kresge - Audio, Sound Effects

@angiekatneko - Art

@james-fisher - Level design and decoration

Our Tools

  • Unity3D - Game Engine
  • FMOD Studio - Sound
  • Lightwave - 3D Modeling
  • Visual Studio 2017 - Coding
  • Clip Studio Paint - Art
  • Photoshop - Art and UI
  • Gimp - Textures
  • ZBrush - 3D Modeling
  • SpeedTree (Maybe)
  • Discord - For the Chats
  • Gitlab - Repository for Files

Our Goal

Our goal is to make something fun, work on some interesting AI, mechanics, aesthetics, and general mood. We're all hoping to learn new things and implement things in different ways. For myself and @linear, this is our 5th full LD - excited to see how it all pans out. This is @thomas-kresge 's 3rd one, and everyone else's first one.

Here's hoping we get something done, despite the lack of sleep we're likely to have!

I'm In!

Looking forward to my 6th partaking! Hopefully, I will not overscope like always :)

Also, I added jalapeños to my pizza and now I'm burning inside.

Good luck everyone!

First Ludum Dare, here we go

10 minutes before I pop my LD cherry. Going to be using HaxeFlixel as my framework. should be interesting.

ihavenoideawhatimdoing.jpg

BryantBros are at it again! But for the first time!

This’ll be the first game jam we’ve been in.

We’ll be using Unity 2017 - probably 2017.2 or 2017.1 Programming done in Microsoft Visual Studio Any images will be made in whatever we decide at the time. It’s a programmer team not an art team, what did you expect??

There are two programmers so look forward to high quantities of programmer art! One of us is also limited to a laptop due to a broken motherboard but screw it!

Let’s do this!

Doing this with @tye-k-bryant

Count me in!

Let's do this! I will be using Unity for my game engine and will be participating in the Jam. This is my second time doing Ludum Dare, and my first time being judged. Wish me luck!

I'm In!

Granger GameDev

Join Here!

I'm in

something

30 seconds

Lets see if this server has the horsepower we need.

late i'm in

going to take a rest after subject reveal, 3AM here

We're in !!

for the third time we'll go for the jam we are :

@synack and @kack3y devs

@angry-cyboot pixel artist

we'll be using unity and gimp mostly

(we added @squirrelsoft the team we used on the old website)

Finally

Waited 7 hours for this.

Maybe

I may make a game,I may not. It all really depends on the theme. If I do make a game I will use Game maker studio 2. If I don't make a game I will finish this calculus project that's due on Monday.

I'm In

Let's try this again, If my brain allows it before exploding, i guess

Golf

It's just golf.

Seriously?

Like, of all the possible topics, this is probably the worst one...

Wow

Cool theme, I have absolutely no ideas though

We're Live

The more you have...

I wish we had more time to do this but it could be worse.

Im in

Using Unity, Aseprite

Complaint about theme

Not much more to say.

EDIT: Although it's forced me to think a bit, and I might have an interesting idea...

We're in baby

Love the theme, lets do this thang

WOAH

What a theme. I do have an idea that fits into this category... I'll have to think about it. /:

Oh nu

I like the theme, but I have no ideas. GL everyone!

GOOD LUCK

Good Luck Everyone!

[Jam] I'm in!

Going solo, and using either Gamemaker Studio 1/2 or Tic-80.

We're in

First Jam here, good luck everyone :)

Im in

No ideas no time could be worse

I'm in

Far too long since I made a game for Ludum Dare, so... let's do this!

I'm going to use a small C# library of my own as a starting point, basically just a small ECS layer on top of MonoGame. And for the graphics, it's going to be good old paint.net as always.

We're off

We're hanging out over at twitch.tv/fletchdev currently idea braining storming :P

Programs in unintended ways

I'm going to be using Tkinter and Python, and Animate CC to make gifs/backgrounds for it. Planning on a game based on choices.

im in

Im using java

I'm in

Though the theme is so big.. Maybe the more powerful your are the more difficult challenges you face, but that seems the general rule for all games. What will I have if I want?

Eating cereals

Gonna try to do something, alone with good ol' Piskel, Photoshop, Unity and Beepbox

Good luck!

Have a great Jam everyone, lets go :D

GOOD LUCK

I wish everyone the best of luck!

I'm in

Wasn't sure whether or not I'd be able to do this jam, but here I am so get ready for an awful game

I'm probably in!

Interesting theme, as long as I can get some cool ideas, I'd love to make something awesome and fun!

We're in!

Friend and I are joining for the first time. Good luck everyone :)

This topic is kinda weird

This is my first Ludum Dare. The theme is kinda weird though. I should spend a lot of time thinking.

By the way, are we allowed to use DOTween Unity for Compo?

I'M IN!!!

I'M IN!!! It wasn't the theme i was expecting but i think i have some good ideas. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!! TOOLS I'M USING: ENGINE: Gamemaker Studio, GRAPHICS: aseprite + Adobe Photoshop, MUSIC: FL Studio with magical8bitplug3plugin, SOUND FX: SFXR, ENERGY: COFFEE, A LOT OF COFFEE!

We're in!

Exciting theme! Can't wait to get started!

I'm in!

Going to try to make more than one level this time!

I'm In!!

I may be a few minutes late to the game, but I'm in for sure. I'll probably be using javascript this time.

Good luck everyone!

Lets do this

First time doing Ludum Dare, good luck everyone. Look forward to seeing everything coming out of this. I'll be using MonoGame framework and GIMP.
