Best LD Yet!

This was by FAR by best LD yet. I had little problems (surprisingly!), my art was actually decent (surprisingly!), the sound effects are proper, the music is kind-of-sort-of-decent (surprisingly!), and it is a working game with full gameplay! It has a ‘story’ mode of 7 days, where you must abduct all cows and humans on Earth before daytime, and I even had enough time to add a console that supports cheat commands (surprisingly!) so you can have as much fun abducting cows as you wish to!  Play it here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-33/?action=preview&uid=33942

2nd day summary

Hello!

Another fruitful day behind us. What we have done today? RootKiller made a lot of changes in the whole game framework code to fix the stability and optimalization, added support for pickups, new sounds and soldier enemies – which can kill you :-), pcpl2 recorded few new sounds and made few very nice pickup sprites. The game is getting in shape!

Latest screenshot from our game:

I’ll write up one of those post mortem things in a bit. Even though I hate them to death, this one is just perfect for one of ’em.

Sorry about not making blog posts. I get depressed just looking at the home page so I try to avoid it as much as possible.

Anyway, here’s a screenshot for you:Squatch3

Welp, I can’t fix anything now.

http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-33/?action=preview&uid=39216

I’ve finished my LD game this year, and I’m on the fence about how it turned out. I love reworking definitions of words, and that’s what I did this year. Instead of something that may seem scary to us, I put a pentomino in a Tetris game. I wanted to make a freeplay Tetris/Pentrix after finishing the puzzles, but I simply lost too much time re-familiarizing myself with GIMP & fixing existing textures. I made around 5 levels (even though I was aiming for 10) and was able to develop a decent storyline. Now, there’s nothing left to do but shoot this off into the wild and hope somebody likes it. :)

Adding hardcore mode

Despite my game being practically completed I’m implementing hardcore mode to my game now, since I have been aiming for jam not compo and this idea seems fun anyway. Regular game is designed to be challenging, hardcore mode is well… hardcore and you unlock it by completing the game normally. It basically doubles enemies’ hp, raises speed of various hazardous things and SPIKES, there are so many SPIKES in hardcore mode now.  Pic with comparision:

Any unattached artists out there?

So my game’s going fairly well. I happy with the base mechanics, and it’s simple! However I really can’t work out an art design that I’m happy with, so I was just wondering if there were any artists out their amongst the Ludum Darers, who aren’t attached to any current projects, who would be happy to join up and help redo my ‘art’ 😛

If you’d like to, just leave a comment. Otherwise, thanks for reading :)

A Little Update

With just over a day left (less for us over here at Team #hashtag, since we all have work tomorrow) the game is all starting to come together and we’re getting excited to get it done and submitted!

So far only Windows. I’m hoping to make a HTML5 version, but it looks like it’s going to need some optimization to work in a browser.

Woohoo!

Hey guys! I’m so excited for the Compo! Can’t wait till it starts!

I wonder what theme will be there this time :)

I did a play though really happy with how this came out.

Made it!

Just in LD33 Update 3time! I had a blast this weekend working on this.

I didn’t get very far with the audio, so I know what to

work on for next time. I hope everyone had as much

fun as I did! Now, I have to take a leak.

Maze Monster

I just finished my Ludum Dare entry: Maze Monster.
The game is written in C++ with SFML and TGUI, the graphics were created with GIMP and the few sound effects were generated with sfxr.

MazeMonster

You play a monster that survives on energy orbs. Without these orbs you will stop emitting light and die. The goal of the game is to collect all the energy orbs without dying.

You also have to watch out for the humans. They think you are a dangerous monster and they will come after you and try to kill you when they see you.

The maze is generated randomly every time you play. In the menu you will be able to change the default settings and choose the size of the maze, your speed, the speed of the humans, …
But even without changing any settings each time the maze will be completely different.

I dit it !

I finally finished my game. I think it’s a total …

Finished! Ludum Dare is so much fun!

I finished my game, WAKE UP! Spread the TRUTH, with 9 minutes to spare. The game is about being an Internet netizen who only gets the TRUTH from REAL web sites not controlled by THEM. Spread your social media influence to achieve maximum, uh, enlightenment? Anyway, check out my game! Let me know what you think of it! Good luck to everyone else! I look forward to playing your games :)

And the Compo has ended!

If you haven’t submitted yet, hurry up! Only one hour left!

If you just submitted your game, congrats! If this is your first Ludum Dare, you’re now part of the 48-hours-game-giving-club! Else, congrats on your new entry!

Finished a single level and full gameplay logic

Woo! I woke up later than anticipated today so I wasn’t able to author more levels, but I did technically finish.

I’m going to submit into Jam instead of Compo so I can do more work on it, but I “finished” in Compo time by a few minutes xD

Finished? A game!

Where’d my game go?

I posted my game but I don’t seem to see it anywhere. Anyone know why?

Decided last minute on Saturday evening to enter.  My first Ludum Dare, had a great time!

Finished My Game

Finally finished my game with 1 day to go. Going to sleep, eat, shower and then going to get back in to it and improve the graphics, fix up some bugs and overall polish up the game. I’m happy with what I’ve put up considering it’s my first time competing in a Ludum Dare and I did it by myself. Can’t wait for the next one where I’ll also have friends helping me out 😀

A newbie question

How are you supposed to rate games?

If I click on a game, there’s nothing about rating, do I have to wait the the submission hour to end, or the jam?

Swarm

2

Ok I finished it. It’s called Swarm. You play as just another monster, with low hp and not a powerful weapon. You must take on the hero! You can try it out.

Enter: The hero. Welcome hero. Hero has valiantly offered to take back the lands of the triflappers! It was taken away long ago by the evil swarm… Brutal monsters of unknown origin. He strode in flapping his triangular wings wielding a weapon of blue triangles.

Here is a swarmy. He’s all spirally and cruelly round. Just look at the thing. Now surely he will attack! Hero is ready though. He prepares his triangle. What’s this? Why is he not moving? Surely it can’t be… that the swarmy is your conciousness! Wouldn’t it be awful if you were this awful thing? If you moved with “WSAD” / “,AOE”? Oh no! The swarmy can shoot! And you are causing this with the mouse! How evil!

Swarmies are pack hunters. If one dies his conciousness is transferred to another. Like all creatures in Bright Land, they fade as they lose health until they disappear forever.

I think it went really well, probably my best Ludum Dare ever. I wasn’t sure what to do with myself around the end.

Somewhat finished! – Earthpocalypse

Due to school having exams now, I only had less than 24 hours to throw together this somewhat strategical game.

In this game the world is dying so you gotta speed up the posses by using the earths resources to build a rocket and escape!

I’m freaking out right now. I finished my game and built it before the time was up (I’m using Unity). I tried to test the build though, just to double check that everything is working properly and the buttons don’t work at all in the build, even thought they do in the editor. Does anyone know a fix for this??

Aren’t you allowed to fix critical bugs after the deadline, as long as you don’t add new features? If I’m reading the rules right, then worst case scenario–upload it as-is and try to fix the bug as soon as possible.

My stealth action game

2015-08-24 03-56-50 StealthMonster 2015-08-24 03-57-40 StealthMonster

Windows build link: https://yadi.sk/d/t_uQAyuOich7D

It had to be a top-down stealth.
You play for an alien who was caught by people and prisoned in a spaceship.
You should kill people, collect DNA, evolute, become smarter and fly home pilotiong the spaceship.

In the game there had to be skill improvement, so you become stronger and choose your way of upgrading yourself.

But i could made only full-of-bags top-down action.
In its core the game is real stealth. Weapons and sreams make noise which is heard by enemies. Enemies see you only in their field of view.

Two enemy types. 2,5 weapon types. Big spaceship.
And I recorded some funny noises. All the game sounds are made by my voice.

Sorry for lots of bugs. I made it all by myself.
Hope you would like it anyway. If u do, I’ll continue the development.

RAWR

I’ve added transformation into a wolf: http://gfycat.com/MadeupDefensiveBobolink

Getting this to work was way harder than it should have been. I’m making good progress, but I’m also very glad I decided to do the jam instead of the compo. The rest of this should be pretty easy.

You are your own worst enemy

Been jamming on a sequel to Quantum Pilot this Ludum Dare. The first version was launched last October in the Ludum Dare for shipping a game.

In this game, you fight copies of yourself — you are the monster!

Hope this inspires you.

True Convenience

Well… Of course my internet has to become really slow just before I started making my submissions for my game. I’ve been uploading all my content for 50 minutes now and it’s still only half way done… Let’s hope I can get everything uploaded by 7:00.

Time for sleep

Finally, my game is submitted and seems to work without any major flaws (apart from NPCs falling through the floor of course :D)

Now, it’s time to get some sleep!

48 Hour Mark! My Jam Entry So Far…

I’m almost done (kind of)! I have almost all of my game’s foundation down so all there is left to do is put together some levels and an ending. The levels are very short but they will be packed with content for more gameplay. The cut scenes will probably lengthen the game as well. I think I’ll announce a final title closer to when I release the game. Don’t forget to comment and check at my Facebook and IndieDB.

This is how one puzzle plays out

This is how one level plays out

The intro

“game” finished!

Ok, so I finally made a game in typescript, yay me!

Play it here.

It would probably be more of a game if I didn’t binge watched 8 or so episodes of big bang theory and a few movies, but that’s life. At least I learned some typescript and phaser and I’m definitely hungry for more :) As a C++ guy making the transformation to rust I find that the lack of error handling is horrible. Typescript is far better than javascript but some part of js shines through. Maybe next time I will use rust and emscripten as playing in a browser is a undeniable satisfaction.

Game submitted – release! An intense two days going from some upended economics and readings of potlatch to simulating interstellar gravity while the spheres sing lullabies. Reasonably satisfied with the end result, it is a little bit hypnotic to play with though the aim was to build something more tactical. Good thing this is a holiday week and there might be time to keep working at it!

Up, up, and away?

So, I can place buildings, I can spawn creatures. The deadline is looming, but hopefully these last 24 hours will be my most productive. I think something at least resembling a game will come out of this.

Aw I suck

I couldn’t even begin the project I thought of after seeing the theme. I’ve had a really rough weekend – just bad timing. However a day before that I got talking to an indie developer who might be willing to collab and the theme gave me a ‘fantastic*,’ idea for a game that I may still try and do. Wish you all luck and even if you are not top dog you still won because you did something. That’s what we need in this world – is people who do something – this weekend – I do NOT fall into that category, but I have booze and dreams, chin chin.

* In my mind anyway.

Congratulations to all!

Goodjob everyone who competed in the 48hr compo. Hopefully your games are fantastic. This was my first Ludum Dare and I loved it! It’s almost midday and I still haven’t had breakfast or had much sleep. Congratulations once again and good luck to the 72hr Jam people.

Misunderstanding submitted

So I did it. I didn’t think I could, but I did. And I think I did good for my first time too. There really isn’t much gameplay (you either walk around or walk out), but I think I did a good job thinking outside the box. I’m going to join the one in December and one-up myself.

It’s Finally Done!

My game, Disastris, is now complete and ready to play!

final screen 1

early screenshot 3  final screen 2

From the description:

Control the monstrous power of Mother Nature in Disastris!

Disastris is a game of strategy, experimentation, chance, and watching things explode. You have control over each of the four classical elements: Water, in the form of a powerful tsunami; Air, in the form of a tornado; Fire, in the form of a fire-bomb; and, last but not least,Giant Monsters from Space! (In the form of a giant monster from space.)

Blast your way through five unique cities on your campaign of destruction, experimenting with each disaster in your arsenal to create maximum destruction. Try for a high score, or simply experience the cathartic thrill of crushing mighty civilizations into dust!

Working on this game was a lot of fun and a great experience. The number of firsts for me on this is almost embarrassing to admit 😛

Yay, in before the deadline.

Whoops was that alive?

Quite happy to have completed my very first Ludum Dare Compo game! Was exactly as fun to work on as I had hoped. I will be back the next LD! Hopefully with better planning and some basic music skills (Can anyone recommend a beginners guide to making music?)

Holy crud, a game that is almost fun!

Last compo I did (LD 31), I made a “game.”  It was a thing.  That played.  Kind of.  I added a score to it, and it was basically a “see how long you can survive without dying.  I guess.”

I wasn’t very happy with it.
FAST FORWARD TO THIS TIME.  I am still not entirely happy.  But I actually am pretty proud of it, even if it isn’t a great game.  I did 100% of everything, and I’m not an artist.

My game is called “Bombster” and you try to bomb a monster from a plane. First game jam that I have used Unreal 4 instead of game maker and boy oh boy was it different. Very enjoyable though and I learnt a lot under pressure. This was my 8th LD in a row and I had a lot of fun with this one. So, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you.. Bombster!

A Long 48 Hours – Well Done!

I have participated in an LD before, but this was my first compo. A truly challenging experience; to the many others who completed their game, I salute you!

Play Collateral Choice

I have never created something in so short a time. Definitely nowhere near my best work in GM, but it will have to do.

Play as a simple robot tasked with the job of destroying drones in a nearby space station. You always have a choice though! Easily stroll through the game by killing the drones, or complete the puzzles as they were intended and leave the station with clean hands. Who is the true monster here? Play how you want!

Shepard

In The End

In my first ever compo attempt I have finished with Shadow Nightmare.

main_screen

From the description

Shadow Nightmare, or a nightmare of shadows.

You play as a shadow lurking behind unsuspecting souls waiting for the right time to turn them mad. If you can avoid their flashlights and make them truly insane then you may just be able to win.

Look out for chain reactions. Raving lunatics can make even the most sane people mad.

Move along walls and jump between them to get closer to your prey!

It was fun though coming to the realization that I still have to finish the art and sounds while there were some game breaking bugs was disheartening. Still, I think I’ve fixed all the game breaking bugs and got a lot more animation/sounds into the game than I thought I would.

Still… I think group jams are in the future for me.

I like the style! It reminds me a bit of Katamari.

Well…I’m throwing the towel

So I’ve decided that I will not be finishing LD for this round. I initially wanted to participate in this LD because I thought I had enough time, experience, and decent tools to at least make a semi-decent prototype. I am decent at programming and know the basics of game logic. I also chose Unity because I figured that it has the capabilities and flexibility of making a simple game. However as I soon come to realize, there was so much about Unity I don’t know, and I find myself having to look at the documentation at various times. Basically, I was more stressed and confused than having fun during this LD. So I think I should back away for now.

This is not to say that I will quit LD. I just simply made a mistake of using something I don’t know deeply about. Provided that I will have the time for it, I’ll will most likely participate in the next LD, as well as future LD’s if I can!

Aw, that’s sad to hear. But it’s good to hear you manged to see what went wrong. Hope to see you next LD!

So I did it.

It’s nothing much to look at (or play unfortunately) but managed to pull something together in the 48 hours that might be a game of sorts. I call it Lure. Lair. Lunch.

My take on the theme was that you are indirectly controlling your hunter (because you are a monster being hunted of course) by disguising yourself and manipulating his progress towards your monster lair by making him use up the resources he has to hunt and kill you with. That ultimately lead to being a single-screen puzzle game. Sadly there is only one level as I didn’t have time to pull together level switching so it’s not especially puzzling! Here’s a link and an image: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-33/?action=preview&uid=55246lurelairlunch-2

Oh my god – I think I did it.

Whats up guys? First LD, and first game doing my own art. Been quite a while since I’ve had this much fun making a game. Honestly, I’m pretty proud of the art I managed to get done.

Finished!

Screen3This was definitely my smoothest Ludum Dare! By the end of the first night my game was practically finished, and I spent the rest of the time expanding in many planned and unplanned directions. I am incredibly fond of this one, and I’ll likely continue it some day. My brain is still buzzing with ideas for things to add.

You can check it out here. Windows only, I’m afraid. I know you can use Game Maker Studio to export to Mac but I really haven’t gotten the hang of it. If anyone feels charitable, feel free to open the source and export to Mac yourself! I’d be incredibly appreciative. Anyway, I’d love to hear your feedback!

OMG I finished!

Enjoy the programmer graphics and sound effects! The presentation of my detective puzzle game is minimalist, but what’s very cool is that it can procedurally generate thousands of problems, and find their solution too!

The game is called “You! Are the monster” because that’s what you say as you point to the correct person once you’ve solved the puzzle.

Here’s what it looks like:

Now go check it out! And then let me know what you think, and ideas for improvement (besides adding music; I ran out of time!).

Monster Arena

Holy crap, my second Ludum Dare is over just like that.

I had some major struggles getting everything submitted this time, but I think I’m set! Who am I kidding, I had major troubles through the whole process. I was barely able to get audio in at all. Turns out the laptop I was using doesn’t have a mic in port anywhere, and the computer that I drove 2 hours to get to with 6 hours left in the compo needed its audio drivers jiggled about for an hour before it would work. So I put together sounds/music and the code and buttons necessary for sound in the final 3 hours. Maybe it was worth it? Sorry Strong Bad for ripping off some of your techno riffs, it’s all I had time for.

Anyway, my game  is Monster Arena. It is about you, a crazed, raging can of Monster Energy drink blowing sleeping people out of an arena with the power of your mighty fizz stream. I was definitely going for a more light-hearted and silly game this time.

TitleScreenShot

You can view/play my game here. I’ll be playing a bunch of games tomorrow and Tuesday, and then I go on vacation so I won’t be able to play more until a week from now. I will definitely get around to playing many games though!

Well done all you compo people, you survived. And now, to bed.

2nd Ludum Dare in the bag!

Here’s my entry:

Climb Monster Climb!

Well, my second ludum dare is complete! I started Friday at 9 and wrapped things up with about 4 minutes to spare. I had far less time this go around than the last time (only slept 6 hours last time, total!), but I think the game I made is fun, and challenging!

The name of my game is Climb Monster Climb. You are a monster that is being chased up your tower by the angry mob. How high can you get before you succumb to the angry mob? If you play, please comment and tell me what your high score is! Mine is posted in the description of my entry. I will update it if necessary.

I made it!

Invadees1

This was the most ambitious project I have ever done in 48 hours! To make it more onerous, I decided that I needed cutscenes. And that they should be fully voiced! This being the Compo, I had to do all the voices myself. But I think it came out pretty darn well. It was certainly a close thing to get everything done. And some of the stuff is not as polished as I would have liked. But, I think I genuinely did everything I could.

Interesting thing I learned about Unity and Mono. There is a limit to the number of nested actions you can have before the compiler just dies. I was using callbacks on my animations and it got so bad I couldn’t even open the project! I ended up switching to Coroutines and everything went back to normal

Anyway, try the game. It’s fun, and the cutscenes are awesome!

The Humans Are Here!

Didn’t get as much done as I would’ve liked, but my game “The Humans Are Here!” is now out!

The idea is that you are a God that has taken over the human world, but they have created portals into your realm to try and kill you. You know you cannot win, but how many of them can you take down with you?

Enjoy the bug-fest here!

DONE!

OMG I can’t belive I actually finished it!

I would write some comments about the jam, a post mortem and all, but I reaaally need a shower and some rest.

For any one interested in Anya’s quest : http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-33/?action=preview&uid=49665

Good job everybody (even if you couldn’t finish!)!!! And those for the Jam, keep up with the good work!!!

TimeSpill2

Finished the menus of the game just in time, 5 min before the end!
For me, Time was the monster, the last 48h as well as the mains “character” of the game :)

This time, I wanted to create a game where the only controls would be the mouse wheel. It worked! Not with as much subtlety as I wanted at the beginning, but if it improves the gameplay then let’s just throw subtlety away.

What worked :
– Physics! It was easier than I thought to find the correct parameters to make it all work, just had to tweak gravity a bit to make loopings work as much as possible.
– Motivation! Twitch.tv sure helps to stay focused, though due to stuff (see below) I couldn’t maintain the live hours I’ve indicated

What didn’t work :
– Sleep! For some reason I got too exited/nervous and couldn’t sleep at all before the theme announcement (at 3am here in France // GMT+2/UTC+2). Thus, Saturday at 4pm I fainted and slept 6 hours, and woke up with nosebleed and headache. And had to go to sleep again later that night. 100% would do it again.
– Music! I totally forgot that for the compo you had to do even the music yourself! I had to lean how to use Audiotool in less than an hour and ended up with a 20s monotone soundtrack, though it’s better than nothing.
– Graphics! I had totally no idea how to improve visual design this time and give it a better overall look without ending with something else not finished properly. (well I could have slept less I guess… heh)

Overall, it was fun, motivating, and I’m eager to do all this again :>

Finished my game and had a lot of fun making it

I finished my game earlier today. You play as a spider spin a web and then try to catch flies so that you don’t die. I’m really happy with the results, I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun.

Click here to check it out

Enough for today

I have made nice progress today, almost all scripts are finished, only bits of gamedesign and some polishing left to do tomorrow.

Game Uploaded

Finally I upload the game. is not exactly what i try to make. but is the best game i could make with my time. Finally, my first LD submit 😀 that makes me happy and I learned a LOT!!!! Thanks LD.

Afterthoughts

Wow. To everyone who’s ever restarted their game – I have so much respect for you right now. It was hard only having like, 24 hours to work on my final submission but I’m done! Remember to play & rate RAMPAGE and subscribe to /r/gameteam if your ever looking for jam partners.

*slumps in chair*

I did it!

I had to leave out a ton of descriptive text, and there was no time to make art or music to add to the game. But those can go in the post-comp version! 😀

My first LD is in!

Oh WOW…  Finally finished with 1 minute to spare after a quick dash to record and implement music before the hour submission started.  I’ve been talking about doing a Ludum Dare for a couple years now but never got around to it.  This time I gritted my teeth and got stuck in.  Was extremely fun, and streamed it on Twitch too.

My game is simple and the art is simpler.  You are a shadow and must navigate past light sources without getting washed out by them.

Shadow Walk

Hope everyone had a great time and I’m going to enjoy playing your awesome creations! (Might get some sleep first though, as it is 3AM here 😛 )

Almost missed it

I live in Germany, start and end of LD are in the middle of the night. The first LD I participated in started and ended 4:00am (+ submission hour), but that is not the norm. I often forget that. Normally it starts and ends 3:00 am, like this time. So I sat here, 10 minutes till submission hour end, with no screenshot and no online version running. But I made it: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-33/?action=preview&uid=3996

First game finished! :D

I can’t believe it, but I’ve finished Monster House!

Now it’s time to sleep a little. It’s 4:00 am in Europe. Tomorrow i’ll play some of your games. Congratulations everyone!
