LD32 April 17–20, 2015

My MINILD58 entry is finished.

Hello everyone! It is not my first time here in Ludum Dare. However, it is my first time to make and submit an entry that I am truly proud of, because I set myself that it is already complete. I failed so many times before. I lost the chance to submit because of my negative energy. I haven’t gotten enough courage that I have today. So yeah, hopefully. You can visit the game that I’ve made and play with it. It is only for Windows. So please bear with me!

If you want, you can do feedback on my game. So that, I can see what are things to be learn and I have to work on.

#SuperSHIELD – a rotational pong-like combining Super Hexagon + Bit Trip Beat

Submitted my MiniLD58 entry!

PLAY

About a year ago I’d been toying with the idea of a rotational pong game that played like Super Hexagon & Bit Trip Beat mashed together; I called it Super SHIELD.

For the jam I thought, hey, why not resurrect the idea and reboot it for Unity 5? I’m a much better coder than I was a year ago – so refactoring and rebooting wasn’t a huge deal.

Here is the game! Play it, share it, and let me know your thoughts!

Charles Great Quest for Pong Postmortem

Hi, PixzleOne here!
I don’t know where to start, so I will just start when the mini LD begun, the 20th of March.
I had this idea of a game that I wanted to create even before this mini Ludum Dare.
What I wanted to make was an open world game where you run around and do criminal things, not too different from Grand Theft Auto.
I wanted there to be a open town where you could run around and punch people, steal cars and get hunted by the cops.
I started working on my game right when I got home from school at the 20th of March. The theme had now been announced, but I didn’t really know how to implement pong into my idea. I started making the basic mechanics for a top down GTA clone. I worked on my game every day, but the time flew past. Soon I realised that I didn’t have nearly enough time to create half of the content I had hoped to make. I continued working on it, really wanted to finish in time.
In the end I managed to put together something a bit similar to what I had been aiming for. I got pong into the story, and also some pong inspired gameplay.
It’s a game with a story about a boy named Charles who was in love with his pong game. One day it got stolen and to get it back Charles had to beat the thief in a pong game. When he got to the place, a guard stopped him. To enter he had to become a criminal.
When you have read the story, the game puts you in a small little town. I wanted there to be cars that were driving around in the streets, but I didn’t have time. Instead i put a highway to the left of the town where cars drive. The player cannot drive them unfortunately.
However, your task as a player is now to get 500 fame as a criminal, and you can do this by killing civilians and polices with your fists. Once again, there wasn’t time for me to create more weapons.
If you manage to get 500 fame, you get a bit more story, and then you get to face the thief in a epic pong battle of destiny.

What went well:
I made some story.
I made linear gameplay that follows the story.
I made simple AI for the polices.
I made a simple open world.
I made one music track.

What could have went better (or just went bad) :
The graphics are very simple.
I didn’t have time for any polishing.
The AI is very badly written.
I could have worked a lot more with the pong part.
I wanted to make animated cutscenes.

Be sure to check it out, and tell me if you finish it!
I don’t think you can play it in google chrome.

MiniLD58 Pong Island Submitted

I managed to submit my game last night. Annoyingly I’ve been crazy busy this week, so hardly got as much time as I wanted to work on it. Still quite happy with what I did get done though. And it was my first LD entry, so I think it was a great warm up to LD32!

So, what did I learn?

  • You can get a pretty nice style going with primitive shapes and a few textures.
  • You can completely transform the feeling of a game by changing camera angle.
  • It’s possible to get surprisingly close to a release worthy (mobile app maybe) game in a matter of days.
  • I need to be more creative with game names.
  • Consuming copious amounts of coffee seems intrinsically linked to creativity.  (Ok, ok, we all knew this one already)

Anyway,

Definitely going to be developing this game further. It’s been a pleasure, bring on LD32

Any Interest for a Real World Meetup in Porto Alegre, Brazil?

I have a space we can use in a conference building, easy to access, good internet access and all that.

Please comment on, so i can reserve the room, if there’s interest.

Room should be large enough for 20 people, without problems.

Attack of the Martians from Outer Space

The game for my first MiniLD is done. I had much fun making it, so thank you again for the great theme! I don’t know if I would have found the motivation to make a game without it. My game needs still some work, but it’s playable. So if someone would like to protect Earth from the Martian attack force, here you have the chance.

Attack of the Martians from Outer Space

I hope I find the motivation for LD32 too.

Dani Coder

Dani Coder is a software I’ve been making, to help people easily and freely make games. It has it’s own language I call Dani Code, and you can test out your games, and publish them, for other people to play! I doubt it’ll be out for this upcoming Ludum Dare, but I hope people can use it to make their games for LD one day. Here’s some progress.

Slightly More Blorf

I wanted to learn Box2D just in case I need it for the main Ludum Dare. Then I thought, hey, you know what’s really simple and what I’ve just been working on? Pong! And the competition is still open? WOOO!

I’d done Blorf Pong (a WebGL game) as a joke but I thought I could probably at least put in *some* effort.

Box2D in javascript is a hellish nightmare – using a library automatically converted to Javascript from the C++ – it’s not pretty. It’s taken me a day but I’ve finally got the hang of it – enough to add pistons to the paddles which makes the basic Pong game a lot more interesting and bizarrely tactical.

I also decided to fine tune the AI a little bit too. It’s all driven by impulses through the physics engine now, so the AI is now “perfect” except for doesn’t quite have the level of accuracy it might want. It *can* be beaten but you have to be really quick.

On the visual side I thought I’d add some particles as well. Because particles.

On a mission to get @llamasoft_ox to leave me all his sheep. Blorf Pong, now with added blorf! http://t.co/lJ8jUSeNOu

— Totes Inapprops (@CharlotteGore) March 30, 2015

Am very happy with Box2D but feeding it data is going to be a problem so I probably won’t be able to sort anything out before the next Ludum Dare, but the one after… hope so! Really looking forward to the next Ludum Dare now. Probably won’t be making another game like this for a while though. 😛

Hey, question: I can’t seem to embed my tweet in my post the same way you have – it just comes up as text. Did you have to do anything special to put it in the post?

I just cut and paste the direct link to the tweet into the post editor (in the normal visual mode) and it Just Magically Worked :)

Pixel Pong Postmortem

I would like to discuss with you what my approach was for creating this game.
First of here is the entry page: http://ludumdare.com/compo/minild-58/?action=preview&uid=32655
Google Play Store download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bruynhuis.pixelpong
And a preview video:

So I was aware that there was a Mini LD this week but it was only until Tuesday that I decided to enter.
And the only reason I entered was because an idea for a game came to me.
The tools I used:

  • Game Engine – jMonkeyEngine
  • Texture editing – GIMP
  • Sounds FX – bfxr
  • Sound editing – Audacity

At first everything went very well.
I had some problems with performance when I converted the game to run on android and the reason for this was the amount of individual objects passed to the graphics card.
The first moment I batched those spike objects I had an instant increase in FPS.
Other than that, this game took me about 6 hours of work.

Ludum Dare 32, I’m In

Yes! Let’s kick of the i’m in posts for the LUDUM DARE 32, seeing as there are only 18 days till it happens.

I am IN!!!

Tools:

  • Eclipse
  • Java
  • LWJGL (possibly)
  • If not LWJGL I will probably just use JavaGraphics

Hopes:

I am hoping to come in the top ten people (this isn’t going to happen. But there is no benefit in trying otherwise)

Good Luck to everyone else doing the Ludum Dare 😀

In my experience, Swing is pretty hard to get running at a decent framerate. If LWJGL doesn’t work out (and maybe if it does), I would recommend LibGDX!

I’m In! Can’t Wait!

This is going to be my first full Ludum Dare, and I’m really looking forward to it! I’ve been watching the countdown for it since January. Crazy anticipation!!

TOOLS

  • Notepad++
  • GIMP
  • SFXR
  • HTML5
  • JavaScript

I’m hoping for a nice finished game, that’s plenty-o-fun, and fits the theme.

What theme am I hoping for? “You have no weapons”, or “You are the enemy.”

Ludum Dare #32

This will be my first full compo coming off the back of my first ever miniLD. Really looking forward to seeing what I can produce and joining in the community spirit throughout the weekend

TOOLS

I haven’t fully decided yet but it will most likely be:
Visual Studio 2013
GIMP
SFXR / BFXR
C++ (SDL with OpenGL)

HOPES

I’m looking to have a finished, playable game and to learn at least one new thing through the process

THEME

I really don’t mind.

Good luck all and hope to chat to some of you on IRC through the compo

UPDATE: I’ve got quite far with an engine I’ve been working on for some time and so I may end up using that. As such to comply with the rules, I’m making it publicly available. The documentation is still being produced so a lot of areas may not be covered yet.

I’m in!

This’ll be my second LD ever, long after my first failed attempt, so I’m pumped.Really looking forward to seeing what I can make, and -if- I manage to make something playable at all.

My tools this time will be:

  • Paint.NET – Graphics.
  • bfxr – Sound generation.
  • FlStudio (maybe) – Music, if I decide to make any.
  • Audacity – Sound editing.
  • Brackets – My HTML5 editor of choice.
  • HTML5.

Hope I didn’t forget anything. :S

My only hope this time is to actually make a playable game in 48 hours. 😀

As for the theme, anything goes in my books!

Ludum Dare 32 – I’m…

IN.  Yup, I’m in.  After MiniLD #58, I feel confident that I can complete the 72 hour jam and have something playable by the end.  Can’t wait to see what the theme will be and to get started!

Game Engine: Unity 5
Artwork: Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop
SFX: Bfxr
Music: Not sure yet
Audio Editing: Audacity

Semi-Obligitory “I’m In” Post

So why do we still do these anyways?  It makes sense if you have public assets or a code base to declare, but for the rest of us what’s the point?  If someone doesn’t do a post and then enters, no one will notice.  I suppose it’s just tradition, but for the sake of argument, here we go:

For Ludum Dare 32, I will be using the following tools:

Game Engine:

Unity 3D

3D Asset Creation:

Blender

2D Asset Creation:

Paint.NET

Sound:

SFXR, Audacity

Monitor Power Cord Repair:

Scotch Tape

Tools I Will Not Use:

Hammers, Screwdrivers, Wrenches, etc.

I did it.  Yay.

I’ve found some good stuff from “I’m in” posts. I would never have tried LibGDX if I didn’t see so many people using it, and sometimes people will post cool content generators like JFXR

Crazy question about 3D art assets

Here’s a crazy question: if you’re trying to make a 3D game, are you allowed to use character and animation generators, such as Autodesk’s Character Generator, for Compo? Since asset generators like SFXR are encouraged, I was wondering whether that was applicable for these set of art assets as well.

I think that you can use this application. Why not? Maybe it will be honest that you describe this method which you used. You will not receive a rating value for this category – graphics. Good luck and see you soon ++

I’m in, y’all

Yup – this is my…seventh(?) Ludum Dare, and after it worked out really well last time I’ll be using the latest version of my home-built engine, Snap – I’ll upload the binaries closer to the event, when I’ve finalised the version I’ll be using. So…

Engine: Snap (C# & DirectX11)

IDE: Visual Studio 2013

Graphics: Gimp, Maya LT

Audio: Audacity, Bfxr

Stream: Twitch, XSplit

Can’t wait for this one… I’m in

After I failed Global Game Jam, I decided that I was all jammed out and needed to take a break. The only jam I plan to do is Ludum Dare, at least in the first half of 2015, and it feels like forever since the last one!

Goals

  • SIMPLE!
That was my goal last time but I went overboard, yet again. Polish, polish, polish is the name of the game. I’ll probably ignore this one again.
  • Hex Grids
If possible I’d like to use a Hex Grid in the game somewhere. Outside LD I’m planning to work on a 4X prototype, so learning Hex Grids will be useful knowledge
  • Rating of 4+ in a category
I was close last time (3.85 Innovation), so I’d really like to get something over 4 stars. It’s a sign of quality I haven’t been able to reach yet.
  • Top 100 Overall
The hardest goal… especially since I put all my blood, sweat, and tears into Silian Rail and could only reach top 200! Gotta put more bodily fluids into it this time!

Tools
My usual tools;

  • Engine: GameMaker Studio (I might play around with the HTML compiler to try and get a web version)
  • GraphicsAdobe Fireworks + Pyxel Edit
  • Sound: Reason 7

Overall Thoughts

Bugs hurt me last time… another reason I want to keep things simple. Learning new things in a Game Jam doesn’t work very well for me because I’m under too much pressure to research and implement tricky solutions (I’m not a programmer by trade). Although Hex Grids is new, and something I want to try, I will practice a little with it beforehand and will drop it like it’s hot if there’s a hint of bugginess!

Finally, I know everyone complains about the theme but last time it was really uninspiring. ‘Entire Game on One Screen’ is basically what I do every single time I make a game already (I’m still pretty amateur!). It doesn’t inspire me to do anything interesting, and while I tried to create a mechanic that really exploited the nature of the game’s lifecycle in one screen… I got a crap theme score so no-one seemed to ‘get it’.

As a disclaimer, I liked Beneath the Surface and Connected Worlds. They were good themes. Interestingly enough, the last LD was my best product so maybe I’m making too much of a meal of it.
