LD24 August 24–27, 2012

Time for a test run!

So I missed out on the past MiniLD because I didn’t pay attention, so I’m gonna see what I can do over the next few days.

My goal is to try out some new engine (mainly flashpunk or flixel, might have a go at both) which I have *some* previous experience in to make a simple fighting game. Like 2 player co-op, same machine fighting game. With like one attack each and 2 different characters (colour changes for the  character’s clothes). Will be truly pixel based and yeah.

Hopefully I havent been too ambitious but what realy made me want to do this, was Indie Game: The Movie and The Game Jam Survival Guide. I got both a few days ago and after reading the book then watching the movie I was truly inspired to create something, anything.

So I came up with this challenge for myself. Let’s see what I can come up with! (hopefully I post constant builds and updates here, but not annoy you all :P)

I’m in !!

This is going to be my first ludum dare, as last ludum dare(23) i could not find a area to upload my game to (facepalm) and therefore could not enter, but this time i’m prepared and these are what i’m going to be using:

Coding=gamemaker

audio=audicity(maybe other programmes)

storage(thankfully)=google drive.

I already have my idea but that is not to be spoiled for the jam, and i intend to win it.

I may be in

So yeah actually I thought “Why not”. I’ve been watching other people participate in LD for some time and this time, I want to participate myself. Probably I’ll just make a game for the Jam thing because I’ll be using an “Engine” developed be a friend of mine and myself for Java. So here are my tools:

  • IDE: Eclipse – what else for Java dev.?!
  • Graphics: Paint.NET/Photoshop (depends on the OS I’ll be using)
  • Sounds: sfxr/cfxr
  • Music (eventually): Cubase 6
  • Timelapse: AbstractFlugzeugManager (small tool written by myself in Java (could be quite buggy))

So, wish me luck! 😀

Edit: Code will be published on GitHub!

Post the engine source before you start, so we have time to look at it and others can use it if they want to.

I’m in! (maybe…)

Unlike last 3 LDs, I should be available for this 24th Ludum Dare.
It would be my first time, so I hope I won’t mess up…
I’ll use the remaining time to train graphics & sfx, I’m really bad at it >.<

  • Language: Haxe + Javascript
  • IDE: Sublime Text 2
  • Graphics: Inkscape / Gimp / Wacom tablet
  • Audio: LMMS / BFXR / Audacity
  • Libraries: None
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse (?)

Oooh, un breton Vannois (Vannais? Vannien? Vanneur? je sais pas comment on dit, je viens juste d’arriver dans le coin)

I’m in!

Wife away: check.

Kids have babysitter: check.

I’m all good to go.

I’ll probably build a browser game just like last time. I’ll probably base it on the same code.

Stuff I’m likely to use:

Language: CoffeeScript

Libraries: three.js, Jasmine

Development system: Lenovo Thinkpad T420 running Linux Mint. Firefox with Firebug as main development browser.

Tools: Fabric, sfxr, Blender, Gimp, Git, GNU Make

P.S.: Looking for real world gathering in Stockholm!

Progress 1 – Flixel Test Project

Time for my first progress post.

Nothing.

I’ve had so many error right now, many of them I have fixed and this one I remember having months ago when I originally installed Flixel but can’t seem to fix. So hopefully once I fix these I will be able to do something. 😀

Should put my code up on github or something so people can help me easier and stuff 😛

Gonna give it ago

Well i’m a noobie to the whole Ludum Dare scene,  stumbled across this about a week ago, liked the idea and figured i’m gonna have ago at the Jam.

Tools:
Language: Visual Basic
IDE: Visual Studio 2010
Frameworks: XNA 4.0
Audio: Audacity
Graphics: Photoshop CS4

You might be face palming right now seeing that it’s going to be smashed out in vb, that’s just how it is.

Feel free to suggest better languages to do it in, so that I may learn them for the future, it is most likely a toss up between java and C# I don’t know either at the moment but plan on learning, at least one of them.

Try both and decide then! I’m a Java user so I may suggest you to try Java first 😛 Good luck in the compo :)

C# loves you and wants you to be happy. Embrace it. :)

Participation Confirmation Declaration

I’m in.

I will very soon be going through the horrors of moving flat but you better believe I’m delaying the move so I can hang on to my current set-up long enough to Dare my face off. I have entered numerous times before, but that’s the past – this will be my best 48-hour game EVAR. Maybe. I’ll certainly try.

Expecting I’ll stick to Flixel for this. Looking forward to it!

Im in

This time I’m actually going to put a decent amount of effort into this instead of taking skateboard breaks and I got it off work this time around.

Tools

Language: Python + Pygame

Graphics: Photoshop CS5

Audio: SFXR + Garageband for Ipad

Extras: My handy-dandy sketchbook

Edit: I may write a simple base engine for pygame to enhance run-time efficiency

I am in

… for the second time. Because I failed badly last time, I will freakin’ think before I get into it without a slight seem of an idea.

Which tools nad languages I am finally going to use depends on lots of things, including the final concept/idea and its complexity and as the whim takes me. The following stuff will hopefully help my reach my target:

  • IDE: Visual Studio 2012 RC Visual Studio 2010 or Eclipse or PureBasic
  • Languages: C++ or Java or PureBasic
  • Libraries: SFML (C++) or SlickUtil (Java)
  • Graphics: Gimp, Paint.Net
  • Sounds: SFXR, Audacity
  • Other stuff: Coffee, anything edible, coffee, Winamp, a toilet, coffee

I’m in

My second Ludum Dare. As of the fail of the last competition, I will reuse much of the old code so I can focus on game design, rather then trying to reinvent the wheel.

My tools are the same as in the last LD:

Programming language: Java

Libraries: Just plain AWT, slightly changed parts of my LD 23 game

Graphics: GIMP

Sounds/Music: sfxr/LMMS

If you’re reusing parts of your previous entry, you will need to enter the jam unless you publish the code under an open license.

I am in again!

Hi all,

I’m in for the next LD. I will be using haxe, pixen/gimp for the art, garage band and my guitar for the music and will use tiled if the game so needs.

I will try to use raw haxe/nme but if I am in a tight corner I’ll probably use HaxeFlixel.

Gameplay wise, only the theme will tell but I would like to focus a bit more on the game mood/feeling.

That being said, I wish everyone good luck! :)

“I’m in!” or “My Ludum Dare 23 Success Story”

I had this planned since April. The plan was to schedule one special weekend for another 48 hours of gamedev insanity.

I AM IN. I could stop at just saying that and listing tools I intend to use.

I don’t know you. You probably don’t know me. But I have a story to tell you. A shameless plug, you may call it.

Maybe… Maybe…
-Heavy, Team Fortress 2

You may have heard about Ludum Dare a couple of months ago for the first time. You may have participated here a couple of times. You may have shipped a number of games. Or you may have heard about Ludum Dare a couple of years ago and never had the balls to participate, like me. The bottom line is – if you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for a tiny nudge to get on the other side, the side that tries.

I’m going to make you start in LD48 #24.

Here’s what I made: a game. The first game I’ve made in my life. You know what? I thought it’s impossible to make a game in just 48 hours. It took me even less to make one (one’s gotta sleep and eat). From scratch. Just using XNA. Doing this for the first time in my life.

Nobody on the internet can read.
-Sean Howard

Well, just to grab your attention mid-post, here’s my plug – this is how I made my game:

After the Ludum Dare I have started my own website, dedicated to indie games. I started getting in touch with other indie game developers on Twitter. I started to organize a bi-weekly indie game raffles. And most importantly, I really know now that I can and I want to make games. This is my success story.

You know what? You can do better. You can get more from Ludum Dare than I did. There’s dozens of tools you can use to make your own game. Heck, there are even books on how to succeed at a game jam! There’s an IRC channel you can visit to chat with folks that participate in LD48. You can get to know people, get to know tools, you can start learning game design and game development.

If you *really* want to make games and haven’t made one, here’s what you will do.

  1. You will have a look at the best games made in the previous Ludum Dare.
  2. You will realize that most of them have been made in 48 hours. Some in 72 hours.
  3. You will realize that you can make a game given that much time!
  4. You will ask yourself, if you are willing to spend 48 hours to know if you *really* want to make games.
  5. If you do – you will book a couple of days following 24th of August for game development. Your family and friends will understand that it’s important for you and will let you try! Trust me on this one.
  6. You will register on the site and will post your “I’m In!” post.
  7. You will make a game, and I promise I’m going to do everything I can to play it :)

If you need more convincing, you can always drop me a line and I will hypnotize you into making a Ludum Dare 48 game.

Good luck, and I hope to play your game soon! :)

Zanzlanz Joined

Hey there!  I am Zanzlanz!  (Don’t forget it!)

Not including the last two miniLDs, this is my first Ludum Dare!
Hopefully I can fix my computer before it starts though.  I might have to reinstall Windows >.<

Well anyway:

IDE: Adobe Flash CS5.5
Programming Language: AS3
Engine: Personal
Graphics: GIMP
Music: FLStudio 10
Sound Effects: Bfxr and Audacity
Live Stream: XSplit – Twitch.tv/Zanzlanz

I’ll use Spotify to keep me motivated 😀

Adobe Flash CS doesn’t run on Linux.

I’d love it if you would release your engine’s .as files for those of us using FlashDevelop (or another IDE with Flex).

I don’t know if you will ever get this!

I update it to a .zip with the script and 2 images. Enjoy!… ?

I’m In!

Well since everyone else does this I might as well too! This will be my second Ludum Dare, both altogether and consecutively. Hopefully I will be able to manage my time more effectively this time.

Langauge: Java

IDE: Eclipse Helios Edition

Graphics: Paint.NET and MS Psint

Sound and Music: Not a clue! 😛

Timelapse: Chronolapse

Target: Web and maybe all OS’

If anyone knows a good, free music maker program please comment! 😀

It doesn’t get more automatic than this:

Looking For Group: Eugene, Oregon

This will be my second Ludum Dare Compo, and I’m looking for like-minded people in — or around — the Eugene, Oregon area. I’m using Unity and Photoshop, and I have experience with Blender and Audacity. Let me know if you’re planning to Dare!

Hey man! Going to be my second, as well. I also live in Eugene. I’m planning on entering this one…trying to get a couple of my coworkers interested as well. Last time I used the Love2D engine and will probably do the same. Are you trying to enter the group jam or the solo compo?

I’m doing my first Ludum Dare this year. I’m in Cottage Grove, wonder how this is going to turn out. Using Gamemaker, pyxel edit, gimp, and audacity.

I’m In! (my 2nd LD)

I’m in! This will be my 2nd LD and I can’t wait!

Last time, though I was pleased with the end result, I spent a fair bit of time getting up to speed with Slick, getting my dev environment working, faffing with the build process and so on. Hoping to hit the ground running this time round to spend more time creating! If the theme fits, I’ll probably aim for 2D, playable as applet and native builds for Win/Mac/Linux.

Language: Java
IDE: IntelliJ IDEA
Graphics: Photoshop
Libraries: “Katsu” (Personal Library + Slick/SlickUtil/LWJGL)
Sounds/Music: OpenMPT, Audacity, SFXR
Level Design: Tiled
Timelapse: Chronolapse
TODO List/Task Tracker: https://kanbanflow.com

My game “framework” (if you can call it that 😉 ) is available under a public domain licence at https://github.com/berkano/katsu

To Do: (before compo starts…):

  • finish demo game “RogueSheep” as a warm-up/library documentation
  • try to get mod (music) replay working when deployed as applet
  • re-test & document build and distribution process for applet + win/mac/linux
  • add view/scrolling support to library

Good luck to all!! Here’s hoping for a fun theme and looking forward to playing your entries too :-)
