So proud of what our team made! Become a Darkwater Smuggler!

Potion Panic! made it in time!

This time, Me, @thunder and @m4xfield grouped up together again to create:

Potion Panic!

It's an action-roguelike kind of game where you're a lonely adventurer that fights off hordes of enemies.

With the help of a mysteriously-looking potion seller you become stronger to fight the ever-increasing amount of enemies!

Day 3 Progress - Not quite there

I was always planning to enter my game in the EXTRA category so I could avoid the whole ratings process. However I was hoping to finish within the Jam timeline. Two problems, I burned a lot of time on Sunday on bugs and I couldn't get Monday off work. So I'm finishing day 3 with the puzzles all done but the game is not ready yet.

Also in terms of bizarre bugs, some of the text I'm now drawing it to the screen twice because if I just draw it once, part it gets lost. Why is this happening? Who knows. I don't want to shit on PVSNESLib since this game would have been impossible without it, but I would say the library is not "mature" yet.

SS3.png

I've only got 2 more evenings to get this finished as I'm travelling for the weekend from Thursday night. So I'm really going to need to go for it after work for the next couple of evenings to close this out. Pretty confident about getting the dialog and audio sorted tomorrow night, but there's some really important polish I need to get done on wednesday before I can release this.

WORK PLAN - ~~Rooms and Characters~~ - ~~Adventure Scripting Engine~~ - ~~Puzzles~~ - Dialog - Audio - Polish

I CAN STILL DO THIS!

We just released Bygone Melodies!

screenshot4.jpg

Can you still remember them?

As I was sitting on my favorite bench one day, something curious happened. The clock on the townhall suddenly stopped dead in its track. However unusual that was, I had some time think about the past. My adventures and misadventures - they all came alive before my eyes like it happened yesterday.

Back in those days - me and my guitar were the greatest friends.

What happened to us?

Try the game out HERE! :)

It's time to eat

We did it :) I don't know if I want to eat a giant burger now or if I never want to eat burgers ever again

I'm really proud to have been able to make this near-perfect metroidvania in only 72 hours!

Unfortunately, it's ever-so-slightly buggy, and it has a tendency to crash periodically (roughly once every 10 seconds...)

However, if you're willing to put up with some minor bugs and the rarest of crashes, you can play one of the most revolutionary video games of our day!

PLEASE feel free to give us any feedback/ideas as we intend to work on it and maybe release it one day !

Stress test / first impressions

Well, the dust has settled after the submission. My kids came home from school and gave the final product a whirl. We started to finally see some slow downs on my desktop after a few hundred gnomes and skeletons were traipsing about. Not bad!

A couple immediate issues I am seeing:

  • No real end condition. Final numbers were too easy so the game goes on indefinitely. Would love to tweak this, but not really in the spirit of LDJ!
  • Right Mouse button based selection is not actually intuitive for most, and problematic on Macs.. sorry!
  • Gnomes detecting nearby enemies is buggy.. and they often go running off despite you telling them to where to go.. kind of an interesting subtlety.. those damn gnomes!
  • would have loved to have time to make additional unit types, etc.. like gnome wizards. Also add some landscape decoration like gravestones or old tress from which the skellies come.

Oh well, here is as maxxed out army screenshot! Still totally playable on PC with AMD Radeon 5, 2070 Super, 32GB ram... curious how others fare if they have the patience to go big!

Space Dizzy is done!

We made it! It was a tough finish (as it always is), despite the fact that I felt ahead of the game this time around.

We made a puzzle platformer this time, something we've never done before. Really cool project, especially since we had the MVP ready Saturday, which is always the goal but never happens. Turns out that making levels is really hard and requires a lot of time  Anyway, we once again had a lot of fun and not a lot of sleep.

I hope you'll give Space Dizzy a try. You can play it in your browser

Clockwork Owl

CW-Owl.jpg Experience the nostalgic bliss of an arcade coin tower game with a twist (and a hoot ^-^). Set in a dark forest filled with anti-clock foxes, you will play as Owlfred Hitchcog, an outcast in the owl community hoo serves as the watchful protector of all things related to cogs and clocks! Will you survive before the foxes get their revenge on the only teller of time in the forest? Hoo knows.

Clockwork Owl is a battle-sim rogue-lite that utilizes coin-pushing mechanics as a means to defend your tower against increasingly challenging waves of enemies. Push cogs off the edge to drop them on your enemies heads! Unlock new cogs that have unique abilities, and upgrade them to increase their damage and reduce their cooldown.

Dreihander (how to fight off the digital hordes in 3 easy steps)

I did my first Ludum Dare as a team alongside @don-juan-javier and had a blast. We ended going with an intense action shooter where your ship changes modes automatically every 10 seconds (thats the theme tie-in, obviously). We went with a relatively simple flat vector art style as I think we both tend to wear the programmer hat pretty well. That said, the audio ended up coming in strong, thanks to Don's skills.

If you are into arcade experiences, give Dreihander a shot! Definitely keep speakers on, fullscreen, and bring the gamepad - controlelrs are fully supported.

Is there a way to search for games (limited to the current jam)?

Achieved More Than Expected | 10 Second Village

I'm really happy with this year's entry. Tried something really different and it paid off.

Here's a few features I'm proud of:

  • Random disasters such as fire & flooding
  • Resource collection
  • Random tiles to buy and place
  • Weather effects
  • Controller support with UI that switches between PC and Gamepad

Another fun Ludum Dare has come and gone. Huge congrats to everyone who completed there games. I had not enough time to try and complete my game this time. But all thanks to these fun compititions they always bring me back to my feet and not giving up on finishing up at least one project to be proud of for the near future. Also I loved this round's theme as well. I can't wait for the next one when it approaches and try again. Best of luck to all of ya.

A SNAIL'S PACE

Had a blast. Always end up making the last thing I'd expect. This time the "10 second" theme took us to... snail races. Apparently the fastest snail can move 5 inches in 10 seconds. Are you a fast snail? lol

Yes... we tried to make it online multiplayer... no, it does not work very well. Either way, it's way more fun than it has any right to be in the state that it's in. Feedback is very welcome!

Decrypt - Out Now!

thumbnail1.png

Presenting...

Decrypt

Decrypt is a word game where you play as a cybersecurity program to defend against hacks (scrambled words sent to mess up your system D:). The main goal is to unscramble as many words as possible, before the word drops overflow. The word drops will be sent every 10 seconds, so be ready to decrypt them as soon as they appear!

When you reach a certain score, 2 hacks will be presented for you to choose. These are abilities that will help you defend against the attacks. But be careful, each ability also comes with a disadvantage, consider the consequences before you pick. Good luck 🙂

Looking forward to playing lots of your games this week :v:

Faster 10 seconds, Slower 10 seconds

if you've watched Interstellar, on the wave planet EVERY 10 SECONDS IS HOURS ON EARTH. That's what kicks our game off: Time passes differently on every planet. 微信图片_20221004082705.png

In Interplanetary, time passes faster or slower on each planet. Decide which planet you want to put your resource on ezgif-2-d60918074b.gif And Survive! Your 3 stats run empty or Over, and you lose. Put cards onto a planet and gain resources...like a cow with 3 eyes or something

ezgif-2-b166bc60ab.gif

And stack cards together. Dirt and water become grass over time and more combination awaits! Manage your cards wisely or soon you will lose for holding too many cards and can't get rid of them!!

GO for a quick playthrough and leave a comment for the 3 jam-nubie of us (it is a first teamwork jam for all 3 of us). There might be little bugs and glitches and I do sincerely wish that you are fortunate enough to avoid the ones that we missed. GREAT WORK TO ALL OF YOU AND HOPE YOU HAD FUN!! 微信图片_20221004084516.png

Quick Post-Jam Thoughts

pop.gif

I made a little game about growing plants.

It's a pretty technically complicated little guy. It generates its own mesh for the plants, applies rules to make the plant grow arbitrarily. For some reason I decided the way the plant grows should be defined in a custom language, so I made a lexer and parser for it??? I think this one was mostly just me liking lexers and parsers. I didn't quite get to everything I wanted to but I think the game evolved along the way. I like it a lot!

My goals at the beginning were to make something with a weird control scheme - I felt like I normally defaulted to a character moving around in a 2D space, and something chill to spite the "10 second" theme. I met those. I also kind of wanted it to be speedrunable, but I didn't really go that way. That's fine, other games of mine from these jams are.

While I don't at all regret spending a lot of time creating these technical little parts of the game, I don't know if I'll make another one like this soon.

Unity HTML5 games work again. How to fix your 404

unitygl.png

My apologies for the hiccup! Embedded Unity games were working earlier today, but we had to make a fix that broke them for a few hours. If your game previously worked, it should now work again.

If you deleted your game and need to re-upload, you can use the edit button in the bottom right corner of the game page.

404: how to fix

404guide.png

We've heard that other websites are smarter about finding the index.html file. We'll fix that for next time, but today we're expecting to find it in the root or "top-most" folder of your .zip. We've replaced the unhelpful "blank white screen" with the page above. If you see this, if you recreate your .zip and re-upload, and it should work.

```python
BrokenGame.zip
/MyGame/index.html /MyGame/game.js /MyGame/game.wasm /MyGame/assets/player.png ```
```python

WorkingGame.zip

/index.html /game.js /game.wasm /assets/player.png ```

Godot and libGDX

The embedding guide has been updated with a pair of workarounds for Godot and libGDX games.

https://ludumdare.com/resources/guides/embedding/

Godot checks for serviceWorker in Navigator and libGDX tries to read document.compatMode. With sandboxing enabled, this seems to cause problems. Editing the .js file, and replacing these should resolve the startup problems. See the guide for more details.

Making the Music for Choo Choo Crossing

We're back, baby!

Glad to once again be hurtling forward on a creative project, with no breaks in sight. Check out the game here!

Ludum Dare is always an interesting rush of “music first, sounds effects second” for me. It's easy to get sidetracked (Oh you need a train chugging? That's easy! 1 hour later…) and I often find myself making excuses NOT to work on the music.

ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif

Yeeting the game onto itch with minutes to spare.

It's not because I'm avoiding finishing the music, but because I just can't help but bounce around to different disciplines. Doing some visual art is a distinct, but an adjacent enough task that I can still stretch my creative muscles. It saves me from ripping my hair out listening to that one section of the piece I'm stuck on, looped indefinitely until something clicks.

Screen Shot 2022-10-03 at 7.35.55 PM.png

This part right here! AAAAAAAAAA!

This Ludum Dare, I challenged myself to write a piece that I sing in. I don't sing. Or at least, I don't particularly consider myself to be a singer. But after completing the jam, I think I've finally broken a 15+ year streak of no vocals in my music. In hindsight, writing lyrics was arguably more difficult than actually singing them. Feeling comfortable writing said lyrics will be the next big goal.

For the music itself, I started with a couple of different sketches. We wanted the music to sync up with the 10-second intervals of our game, so a BPM of 192 was chosen. That way, every 8 measures would line up perfectly (Thank you to our friends and a fellow team for doing the quick math on that!). In paralleling the visuals for the game, the sketches all started off life very sparkly and ethereal. One in particular became a 10-second loop that stood in place as our temporary music for testing mechanics until my partner begged me to give him something else. I wasn't entirely sold or even enticed by the very cutesy marching music that I had, and my process began to stagnate.

I can't really recall why I eventually went with the folk-math-rock vibe that I did, but I definitely blame Tricot. Absolutely check them out, they're a big inspiration. With a solidified plan for instrumentation and a basic ostinato in place, I dabbled in the lyrics on the side. I wanted to still capture the oddity and whimsy of our little creatures, so I tried to go the route of word salad. I really loved what I ended up with, and while some vague meaning of “destination”, “afterlife” and “trains” slipped in, I think it still gives off an air of mystery and the nonsensical.

Recording the vocals was actually a blast. I did some rudimentary warm-ups, practiced the parts a bit, and then belted out as best I could. I wanted some thicker harmonization, so I took the chords for the mandolin and split them into four parts. Likewise, I used a very distinct synth to cut through the noise of the track and used each voice as a guide to make a four-part harmony that lays under the main melody vocals.

Screen Shot 2022-10-03 at 8.37.01 PM.png

Although I felt like I was on a roll, the first problem came when halfway through composing, I deemed the piece too intense for the moment to moment gameplay. We decided to relegate it to a later portion of the game. I started work on a calmer version of the same song. Since the main piece was complete, it was as simple as choosing a slightly different instrumentation. I tweaked the drums and guitar, and added my viola for the melody line in place of the vocals. I love how it came out.

The second issue was more catastrophic. What I can only describe as a bizarre bug, swapped all my instruments around. The mandolin had midi data for the guitar, the drums were now reading the notes for the guitar, and the guitar had wandered off somewhere else entirely. Muting and unmuting my groups was muting a single line 7 tracks down. It was chaos. I (foolishly) saved and closed the project, thinking it was just some weird problem Logic was having. I reset my computer and booted it back up. To my horror, everything was still in shambles. Luckily, it turned out to be a simple, but annoying fix of setting up entirely new tracks and mixing the song again. I have no idea if I hit some odd key combo, but if anyone else has experienced this, let me know!

I think my favorite part about Ludum Dare is the crazy forward momentum it puts on you to actually complete something. I find myself constantly abandoning songs after writing something and then sleeping on it. The energy of Ludum Dare really feels like enjoying a tall water slide. You wait in line where nothing feels like it's happening, but the excitement is building. Then before you know it, you're being sucked down the tube, racing to the end and having a blast.

Until next time LD!

Album for the game's soundtrack coming soon!

First Ludum Dare down!

I did it i made a video game (shakes head at camera)

This is my first time ever actually making something for a game? I did music and a texture for a Minecraft mod but this is like. Full game wowza. It's a bit messy but in terms of the music itself? I'm super proud of it :3

How to make a great Development Timelapse

I post this every LD and I'm not gonna stop now because I think more people should do this.

  • Write some code that takes an in-engine screenshot (most game engines should have this built in)
  • Have it take that screenshot once in the first second of starting up your game. Then another about 5 seconds later, then 10 seconds, then 20 seconds, (cap this at around 60). This means longer sessions have more screenshots.
  • Put all those screenshots in a folder and use video editing software (or ffmpeg if your a wizard) to stitch them all together into a video.

As a result you'll get a very short and to the point development timelapse that shows how the game evolved over time.

Here's an example from this Jam (with some developer commentary!)

Unity Games Avoid Borders Setting

I' just hit the update button in accident and this old post seems come to the top of my flow. I must claim that I have switched to godot, and I'm waiting the new function in godot 4.3 which alows me to embed game in ld page. if you know how to embed game from 4.2 please tell me.

It took me some time to work out how to upload the unity game so that it embeds correctly without border.

I've noticed that some unity authors face same problems, so I write this to show you how to do.

Step1

Select the minimized template

In Edit/ProjectSetting/WebGL Setting

And make sure the canvas size is less than 948*533

tem.png

Step2

After the build, make edits to Index.html

Step2.1

The problem that lead to the bord is that < body > has a default margin

Add "margin:0px" to body.style

Step2.2

If the size of your game is exactly 948x533

then body will produce a scrollbar that block your game

Add "overflow:hidden" to body.style

The final < body > should look like this

<body style="text-align: center;margin:0px;overflow:hidden">

Our first game jam! We finally did it! Game: Frosten

It's been a long few days for my man Kaech who didn't sleep a whole lot. We were big time stressing over the game TOTALLY BREAKING as we were going to upload it. (Can't get very far if the game crashes when you die!)

Kaech had to go to sleep (Poland time so it was the middle of the night for him...) but I was able to figure out what was throwing the red flags and knock it out, so now we have a WORKING version of our game uploaded!

We're very happy with the rhythm of the game and the block timing + music sync. Hopefully it feels nice to everyone else as well.

We wanted something that was stuck to the theme as closely as possible and completely revolved around it instead of just throwing in a power up here and there, and we definitely achieved that.

Well, time to sleep, but tomorrow I'll be checking out all the other games you guys have put out! I'm looking forward to it!

We just finished another jam!

I work with a group of friends since last year, and these jams are fantastic to try ourselves and see how far we can go with our ideas and work! I tried to make all the UI by myself as the other artists worked on the 3D assets, it was such a fun challenge :)

you can play or game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/cat-exe

Finished~

Cut it pretty close but I managed to finish! I made a small doom-like where you have to take down enemies every 10 seconds or sacrifice some of your own health. Entry page is here:

Also recorded a little playthrough:

Gamma Protocol now works on IOS!

mobile.gif

After much googling for this issue, I found a way to make Gamma Protocol play much better on IOS browser. PICO-8 supports mobile controls when exporting to web by default and this works great on Android but for some reason IOS still seems to have pinch zoom enabled on the page which gets really annoying when trying to press two buttons at the same time. It turns out to disable pinch zoom all you have to add is this snippet into the CSS section of the exported index.html

body { touch-action: pan-x pan-y; }

I hope this helps anyone else using PICO-8!

Oh and here's a link to play the game! Mobile users can use the itch.io link to play!

Try my game and I'll try yours!

GOOD WORK ON COMPLETING THE GAME JAM EVERYONE <3

I started this weekend without power because of a HURRICANE! But despite all that I was still able to get a generator on Saturday&Sunday and the power came back earlier today! So after some setbacks I was still able to complete my game!!

Holospecter Speedruns!?

Hey all!

I'm Kepsert from team Manners Maketh Game. This jam we got together a lovely band of people and we created a (puzzle/stealth) platformer called Holospecter. Many different soundtracks, quite some levels, a lot of illustrations and oldschool pixelart in a neat colour palette... but most of all! A speedrun mode.

Can you beat my best time!? Good luck!

Stressful but fun!

I believe this is the 5th Ludum Dare i've participated in, and it's really awesome to see how each of my entries change each time. After a tough 72 hours, my team and I managed to scrap together this little game right in the nick of time.imageem2022-10-03/em191858753.png

Hope everyone had a lovely Ludum Dare 51!

I submitted my first game!

i've been trying to finish projects for a long time! i decided on a whim to join Ludum Dare on thursday. w hile i had a lot of plans this weekend, i managed to finish the game as best as i could with the time i had. sure, i wanted more furnitures and assets to fill out the map. and i still never figured out how to scale the UI properly across different resolutions so it looks a little bad on some resolutions. but it's a game nonetheless. it feels really good to ship something.

i'm gonna fix a ui issue tomorrow and then it should be good. although it's not game breaking, it's important for impact towards the end so it is very necessary. but you should still play it in the meantime! i look forward to play and rate your games! after i've finally slept

Post for uncommon hardware games

Hi! Did you make a game that requires uncommon hardware to play, throwing away all chances of getting lots of ratings? Well, I've got your back. Post your game in the comments and I will add them here to the masterlist as often as I can. Is your uncommon hardware so uncommon it isn't on the list yet? I will create a category for it. Reply to or like the thread and it will spam you with notifications so you can remember to play all the weird hardware games you have the hardware for.

Oh also almost forgot, multiplayer games can be hard to find players for, so I'll add them to the list too.

(I also have a vive pro 2 and I promise to play all the VR games that get listed here next weekend after I get my living room set up again.)

Counting is... fun?

Give my game a shot if you love the Count!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/count

I actually managed to finish! XD

I've spent the last 3 days slaving over this project, losing sleep, and all the things that come with a game jam; and even when I thought I wasn't gonna finish in time... I did! I'm really proud of how it all turned out, even though there are things I wish I could've spent more time on! Somehow I was able to fit what would normally take me a few weeks, and spit it out in 3 days with pure motivation (>:D)! It's kind of janky in some areas, but overall, I'd call this Ludum Dare a success!

If anyone would like to try it out and leave me some feedback; I'd really appreciate it! Thank you in advance to anyone who takes time out of their day to play my submission! :)

Our first game jam

Hello, i want to share you my first game, If you like the course games, you may be hooked. unknown.png

Enjoy ! https://ldj.am/$300257

Nothing like a good heart attack right before jam submission

When you build your game using entirely JSON files for dialog, be sure to export those JSON files, haha.

Phew, glad it's fixed though.

For any fellow Godot Developers out there, make sure you check the Resources tab before exporting, lol heartattack.png
