How to make a great Development Timelapse
I post this every LD and I'm not gonna stop now because I think more people should do this.
- Write some code that takes an in-engine screenshot (most game engines should have this built in)
- Have it take that screenshot once in the first second of starting up your game. Then another about 5 seconds later, then 10 seconds, then 20 seconds, (cap this at around 60). This means longer sessions have more screenshots.
- Put all those screenshots in a folder and use video editing software (or ffmpeg if your a wizard) to stitch them all together into a video.
As a result you'll get a very short and to the point development timelapse that shows how the game evolved over time.
Here's an example from this Jam (with some developer commentary!)
