Ludum Dare 57 April 5–8, 2025

Behind the scenes of Ludum Dare 57

For almost our entire team, participating in Ludum Dare was a first, and it was a challenging but incredibly exciting experience! We decided to go all in, barely sleeping for two days to complete everything we planned. So much time has passed that we nearly forgot how it felt, so we put together a short video compilation about the creation process over those 72 hours. It also includes a brief clip from @coleslaughter’s Keyboard Cowboys review on Twitch full of live reactions — seeing how people respond to your work is the best part! @coleslaughter — huge thanks, it was so much fun! And thank you to all the participants — we played a ton of games, each unique and wonderful in its own way. Thanks for your ratings and comments!

Further Below - a Post-Mortem

How It Went

This Ludum Dare I told myself to keep the scope small so I wouldn’t get stuck in technical mechanics or rushing to finish too large a narrative. I decided pretty quickly to just write a simple text adventure, no fancy mechanics.

I landed on an idea and the title of Further Below pretty quickly, where the player is the last remaining employee on an underwater facility that’s being shut down. The player would be able to choose what rooms to visit and would need to unlock access by visiting them in an order that makes sense. Then, rather than being exfiltrated, things take a downward turn. Depths!

I liked the idea, it should’ve been enough to motivate me to keep working on the game, but somehow I got stuck without motivation. I kept distracting myself with other things, and when I ran into a simple issue on how to gate one area from the next it gave me this anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach that took even more procrastination to overcome.

Eventually the feeling lifted and I got back to writing. I did want some kind of mechanic for the player to use, so they weren’t just reading a story without any agency. Besides the base navigation options, I added two commands: search and inventory. Search would offer up items you need when used in the appropriate location, the inventory would allow use of the items. After a little while I realized that the inventory aspect was a little too much to do in the limited time available, so I settled on just having a search option. This basically removed any real agency again, but I knew that setting up the inventory would make me get stuck in the technical mechanics I mentioned above.

When I first started writing the story I didn’t know where the end would lead, but eventually things fell into place. There is an eventual choice to be made by the player, and ideally that choice would be made earlier in the game somehow rather than right at the end. However, I had work the next morning and it was late by the time I got to this point, so I once again ran out of time even in this smaller scope story.

The Good

I like the story I wrote and how I wrote it. I kept any real exposition at a minimum, trying to keep things near the player’s perspective and not outright spilling the beans. It’s a simple tale though, so I think the player can come to correct conclusions without much trouble.

There’s limited graphics in these text adventures I do, it usually comes down to finding a good font, deciding on a palette, and designing a fitting logo. I am happy with how those things turned out.

I slapped together the music pretty quickly. Atmospheric ambient cellos over time-stretched underwater noises that are lowpassed. I threw in some thunderstorm rumble as well. Nothing fancy, but I felt it fits the vibe well.

The Bad

The lack of agency and choices with delayed payoff makes this more a story you move through than a real game. The thought that I might as well be writing a short story instead occurred a few times.

As always, time management and motivation were my antagonists in this jam. I couldn’t take Monday off from work, but even if I had I am not sure I would’ve used the time effectively. I find it can be difficult to straddle these jams by myself. When I worked in teams previously, there was always the outside impetus to be useful to my teammates.

The Takeaways

Same as always, pretty much: I need to get a better handle on managing my time effectively, and figure out how to balance mechanics and story. I nearly always fall more extremely on one end of those rather than getting the balance right. And I need to prepare snacks and take real breaks during the process rather than find distractions on my computer. One of these days...!

Satiate, Hunger Rougelite, thingy

heyy soo this is just going to be a lil post about what my thoughts are on the game i made Screenshot 2025-04-07 162556.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/satiation im proud of it but im gonna use this as like a blog for all the feedback i got, most common is that enemies can still attack you even after death, this actually isnt true, but there leftover attacks still activate this really only is noticable on the lance sentry inspired guys, hunger hitbox needs to be bigger, and i need to put a cap on the eating speed upgrade after it becomes instant, i also need more mechanical depth to the mechanics and stuff, otherwise i think im proud of it! i didnt realise it to its fullest potential, i planned a boss every 4 floors, but even if i had the time, which i did, i got really burned out, i think im gonna stop doing jams for a while lol, anyways thanks the the 20 people who rated my game!

Thanks Again!

We're almost at the end of the LD jam and I'm so grateful to you guys for checking out my game and playing it. I didn't think I'd get past 10 ratings, so to get 20+ is awesome and couldn't have done it without you! If you have a game you'd like me to play please let me know in the comments below and I'll check it out!

Finally got something together

Took a lot longer than I anticipated -- too much of life getting in the way -- but here's a 4-level build of my submarine game. It's only in the Extra category, so I'm not going to plead for ratings, but I'd appreciate any feedback. Screenshot 2025-04-22 002829.png

Seacat is out for a dive!

I have been out of modding/gamedev for years now, and literally when I was about to delete my calendar reminder that LD is happening the next day I figured instead why not try and join in. As a result, together with NiceSlice we got a simple concept going and tried our best to finish things off in the 2-3 days. That didn't work out, but that's what the extra category is for!

It's great to actually finish something, although I do feel like I overestimated my abilities - turns out all those years doing modding of existing games does not translate very well to figuring your own game from scratch (and tooling you're not familiar with), which was quite ego bruising in the end.

Just some humble music.

Just want to share this short music, that I made for no reason.

Maybe someone would like it. I will appreciate it.

Thanks and enjoy ^_^

A slightly different take on a platformer with minimalist graphics and an imaginary soundtrack (I ran out of time for music).

Play it here

Just need a few more votes to get over the minimum! Thank you!!

BTW timelapse

Haven't posted a timelapse since LD47 :) This time I also tried to make some janky music to go with it, to learn to work with a DAW a little bit!
