The grand finale is tomorrow at 6pm CEST, really looking forward to this one as it will feature only handpicked games, hope to see you there!

The beginning of something great... Or just a picture?

This is a short but important post that means a lot at once.

  1. We're making great progress in developing the Steam version of Post Solis.
  2. The game has become larger, deeper, and most importantly, clearer to the player.
  3. Not only the game itself has been redesigned, but also its visual style.

Take a look at the new Post Solis logo:

1920х1080.jpg

The small sun in the center of the letter "O" symbolizes both loneliness and the hope of the whole planet for salvation. And also our hope to make a really good game.

Support Post Solis on Steam and add the game to your wishlist. We'll be very grateful to you for this little help.

Virtomae - 5 ratings left (I will be sure to check out all your games tomorrow)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/virtomae-virtual-pet-buddy-pet-anything

Hello, please try out my frist LDJam title - Virtomae. It is a clock-based virtual pet game and the goal is to make the pet live as long, as possible. I will try out all of your titles in response (also the ones of people, who have reviewed it earlier, if I haven't before).

Handling multi-version build for WebGL

Hey ! For all those who want to publish a post-jam version of their WebGL game and allow both versions to be playable in the same itch.io page, I have found a solution that works pretty well. It only asks basic knowledge of html/css/javascript. People who try to launch the web version of our game Super Mowser Bros will see that appear : firefoxem2022-04-19/em21-32-45.png

The first key to do this is to understand what WebGL builds are made of : Sans titre.png

The only files that are regenerated for each build are the ones in the Build folder. And more specifically, the ones with the .gz extension. They are fetched by the index.html, which contain html code and js that initializes the webgl build. This is all done here : Codeem2022-04-19/em22-13-47.png As you can see, the .gz files are fetched using their path, which means that you can basically put the Build content of multiple builds in different folders and launch the right version when you need it.

So here is what I did : I put the createUnityInstance in a function so that it does not launch right away, and added a path argument to be able to select the build to launch : Codeem2022-04-19/em23-02-44.png

Then, I added two buttons in the html code, that call this function when they are clicked : Codeem2022-04-19/em23-06-00.png

and now the build has this structure : explorerem2022-04-19/em23-07-04.png

I kept the Build folder just to keep the loader.js file at the same place, as it the same across builds and the javascript code needs it at this place. You can change its place if you want by changing the path in the tag that imports it.

Of course, this isn't really automated at the moment, but I might improve it in the future, and provide a github project with the full code and other stuff like custom splash screen videos and better itch.io fullscreen handling.

I hope it was useful, tell me if anything is not clear ! And if you have the time, please check out our game, Super Mowser Bros, we need feedback on the post jam version !

Last Chance to Rate Under the Moon

Actually I would like to have a bit more feedback on the player control (movement/fighting), even so I sort of already know what to improve but I not entirely sure what changes I should make... :/

Anyway you can play it in browser

Only a day and a bit left!

This was my second time participating in Ludum Dare and it was yet again a fun time! I have gotten so much lovely feedback on my game, You Are A Bomb! Thanks to everyone who have rated/played it!

Congratulations to everyone else who made a game! It is no easy task to make a game in a weekend! (or 3 weeks if you choose the extra option)

The birth of Günther ‍✨

It was a huge pleasure to participate in Ludum Dare 50 and we want to thank everyone who has made our first game jam such a great experience! It is stunning to see so many creative people coming together to create thousands of unique masterpieces. While we had a lot of fun during this challenge, we also see a great chance to learn from each other. With that in mind, we want to give you quick insights into the process of creating the main character – "Günther" – of our game.

Concept 💭, Modelling 🔨 and Texturing 🎨

After the basic concept was established, we came up with the idea to make the character look like a clumsy fisherman or a ship's captain who is sitting in an undersize rubber dinghy, ironically struggling to control it.

Starting with a quick sketch, we created low poly meshes of the character, the boat as well as the tools and textured them using a custom color palette in blender (by the way, what an amazing piece of software!).

CharacteremModel.jpg Dinghy/emModel.jpg

Rigging 🦴

Günther still looked a little bit stiff, we gave him some bones so he could relax. We setup different constraints like Inverse Kinematics to make animating easier.

Character_Rig.gif

Animation 🏃‍♂️

In the following process, 14 seconds of various motion sequences had to be animated. This included different idle animations, rowing, fixing the boat in different positions and more.

Idlesem64.gif Row/em64.gif Fixem64.gif Specials/em64.gif

Controller 🧠

All animated sequences came together in Unity (another great software some of you might heard of :P), where an Animator Controller was setup with different states and transitions to blend between the animations.

💡 Tip: Unity's Blend Trees can be extremely useful to make animations more dynamic, this was used to blend between the rowing as well as animations for fixing the boat at any given spot.

A character controller, that was programmed to control the motion and mechanics of the character, brings Günther finally to life.

CharacteremController.jpg Character/emGameplay.jpg

Result 🎉

Play Paddle Panic 🚣‍♂️ to see Günther in action!

Perseverance needs you

Hey there \o/ ! We're sadly falling short on the required number of ratings needed to be rated and we would be sad to miss this chance :( Yeahs it's part my fault as I did not find the time to play and rate a lot of games because of some shenanigans happening in my recent life but I'll redeem myself by doing so as many time as I'll be able to until the final bell.

In the meantime please check out our game and rate and comment it if you feel like doing so, I'm eager to know what you think of it and if you manage to get the "true ending" ;) (Disclaimer: I know of only one person outside of the team itself who managed to do so 'till now...)

Love, Pandore

Time is running out!

Can you beat this score in The VortExperience?

highscore-postjam.png

There's only a couple more days to try :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/the-vortexperience

Read on ...

The way the system is set up, there is definitely a mathematical limit to the score (the point that the vortex is closing faster than you can throw a blob of goo). That may not be the most fulfilling mechanic, but it does fit the theme!

There are a few tricks that I've uncovered or observed, so see if you can figure them out :) I'm working on a post-jam update to tweak the balance, extending playtime a bit, as well as adding a few features that were requested by reviewers! Follow if you'd like to see that update.

Many thanks! - Hawkin

Rising Tide - Post Jam Update

A post-jam update for Rising Tide has rolled in!

This update features slightly new mechanics that will change how the game works in dense areas of the board. There are also some quality-of-life additions!

  • When seaweed is surrounded by 3 or more jellies, it changes into a starfish! This gives a little more info when the board is full of jellies!
  • Shells will now always be placed near 1 or 2 jellies (same rules as seaweed)
  • Changed the difficulty scaling (now no more than 20 jellies can spawn on the board, and the smallest water-speed bar increased from 2 -> 5)
  • Added a palette controller! Collect palettes as you explore the beach, and choose to lock in your favorite!
  • Added a mute button to silence the music

Please let me know what you think! I'd love to hear what you think of the starfish and balance changes!

If you haven't played yet, I would love your feedback!

Super Mowser Bros now has its Post-Jam Version!

Come and try it yourself! You can select the jam or the post-jam version when you launch the webgl game! Why not try both and give us your feedback?

What changed:

  • We fixed some bugs which broke the game and made it infinite.
  • We work on the balance: it was almost impossible to lose; now you will be design, as intented!
  • We fixed some of the graphical bugs (wrong animation played, etc…)

And tell us how long you survived in this version, the current record is 17:03!

Looks like ~~MARIO~~ BARIO is angry, maybe kidnapping princess CHEAP was not the best idea after all!

Final rating spree!

Hello! I'll be going through and rating games on last time for the jam, so if you'd like yours rated, please post it here!

If you would check out my meta infinite runner at the same time, Bitboy, I'd appreciate it!

Until next time, stay curious.

Results day is Thursday. What you need to know

Results-Day.gif

Ludum Dare's 50th event is coming to a close. At the time of publication, we have a day and a half left. See the sidebar clocks for specific times.

Jam and Compo

If you'd like to receive a score on results day, you should play, give ratings and feedback to other submitted games. You can find recommendations of what to play on the homepage, or the full list of recommendations here:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/games/

If you're a Mac or Linux user, you can use the following links to find games you can play:

  • https://ldjam.com/tags/platform/linux

IMPORTANT: This is a workaround! These pages don't act the same as recommendations. You're less likely to be credited for feedback on games found outside of recommendations. Also, these lists include games from previous events!

Extra

Extra games are not scored, but we do collect ratings for future use.

There is no submission hour for Extra games because we wont disable publishing of Extra games. However, we will disable "joining" the event once results go live. So as long as you join before results go live, you can still submit an Extra game.

This requirement will be relaxed in the future. This is simply a limitation of how the website works today.

Though ratings will end, Extra game authors are free to continue playing and giving feedback after the rating period ends. Recommendations from feedback should continue to work, but we expect the number of active players to diminish after results day.

Use this link to browse recommendations:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/games/

What happens after the rating period ends? Why 6 hours?

We run some scripts behind the scenes to calculate results. Then we audit the results, make sure the winners are the legit winners. This process typically takes 1-2 hours, but if when we find something or something goes wrong, we've given ourselves some buffer time.

Once finished, we start our final preparations to kick-off the results ceremony.

Results Ceremony! Top 15 Countdown on Twitter!

To make the end of Ludum Dare more interesting, we've started live-tweet the top-15 games from the Jam and Compo.

https://twitter.com/ludumdare

Every 10 minutes, we share a new pair of games: one from the Jam, and one from the Compo. We do this for 2 hours and 30 minutes. About 5 minutes after the last game is revealed, all results will become available.

The goal is to eventually move the ceremony here to the website (or rather, do both), but all I'm promising today is the live-tweeting.

Also my apologies to those in the EU, but the ceremony and the results do go live pretty late. We will be moving the times up next time.

Live Stream the Results Ceremony on Twitch!

This is where I need your help!

A pair of tweets every 10 minutes isn't very exciting. What's more exciting is watching people play the winning games.

During Ludum Dare 49 we had 3 streamers playing the winning games. This worked out great, since some streamers needed more than 10 minutes for each game. As a viewer, you could use the sidebar tv widget to "flip channels" and see the other games.

My personal "stretch goal" for Ludum Dare 50 is to get a jumbo TV widget front and center during the results ceremony. It might be a little rough around the edges, but I really enjoyed the channel flipping experience. If that doesn't work out though, we'll be sure to highlight what's going on, and where to find the streams.

All current Ludum Dare streams on Twitch can be found here:

https://www.twitch.tv/directory/all/tags/c8d6d6ee-3b02-4ae7-81e9-4c0f434941cc

Wrap-up

I believe that's everything. If I missed anything I'll either update this, or post in the comments.

I have one final news post to share after the ceremony, with details how to check your scores, and perhaps some other announcements.

See you Thursday!

Just finished my puzzle/adventure game: "First Contact"!

Hi guys!

Wanted to finish "First Contact" it in a week, so I'll have players but... stuff came up. Like I decided to make a devlog during the jam! (by the way, link on the game's page)

Could you give it a try so I could get some feedback? (It's playable in the browser!)

That wasn't planned, but we figure out that our HTML version is fully functionnal on mobile ! :)

It's not recommanded to fat finger persons but exept that, everithing is fluid and fully functionnal. Thanks Unity to optimize and configure for us things we didn't even think of !

If you have 10mn on the go and want to discover the Lilianne investigation, it's a good opportunity !

The game is about 5/10mn long and if you want the good ending you will have to try 2 or 3 times. Perfect on the public transports ! And bonus, we didn't implement sound, so you will not annoy peoples around you ! ;)

Play "Corbeille de Fruit" here - A narrative driven investigation

Note 1 : The HTML package is only 26mo to load.

Note 2 : If you have more time and a computer, rather look at the danger zone and help some others games to get the 20 ratings.

Please play and rate Brickroll!

We need a few more ratings for Brickroll.

This fast-paced game is "reverse" Breakout! You place bricks to protect the paddle. Clicking on bricks multiple times makes them harder to destroy. Watch out for the power-ups on the walls that make the game harder for you to play.

Please give it a shot, it won't take long!

Almost end of ratings - play Carrot Grove before the time ends :D

You're probably a bit tired after playing all those dynamic, crazy gameplay-based games...so why not relax with a visual novel where you can talk to the spirits and enjoy the Slavic forest they live in?

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/carrot-grove

Btw if you comment after playing, I'll return the favour of rating your game back! ##

Intro to By-place development

Hello world!

This story began in 2020, when I first watched True Detective and The Truth About the Harry Quebbert Affair, and conceived the idea of making a game with similar motifs, but in the setting of the Russian wilderness. For maximum immersion in the theme already in 2021 I went to Vorkuta, and then to Kirov, Nizhny Tagil, and single-industry towns in the Chelyabinsk region.

pic1.jpg

Having gathered inspiration and references, it was time to start thinking about gameplay and prototyping.

Ludum was a great opportunity. We were able to get a team of 2nd year college students where I work and immerse ourselves in the project for the entire 3 days. Anna Russ helped us with the script and the storyline, and Vasily Kashnikov helped us with the soundtrack, many thanks to them.
We took mechanics similar to Disco Ellisium: walking, dialogue, collecting clues, and matching them. The hardest part was putting all the ideas into a short story and making all the systems work together.

One of the main challenges the programmers had was to put together a dialog system where one piece of information would give clues to unlock another in dialogues with other characters. After all, as long as our character doesn't know about an event, we have no logical explanation as to why he can ask about it. The branch of connections and dialogues looked like the picture below:

Refences – Figma - Google Chrome 2022-04-20 17.44..png

It wasn't that hard with the location - just take an ordinary courtyard of a Russian provincial and transfer recognizable objects from photos to it by texture drawing and photogrammetry, arrange the characters and... understand that the players still don't understand how to play it :)
But we liked the result, in just a couple of days we got the atmosphere we wanted. From the sketch it turned into a blocking at first, and then into a full-fledged location with all the sets.

Refences – Figma - Google Chrome 2022-04-20 16.31..jpg

Женя 2021_5-min.gif

In the end it was a great experience to work on an idea and get a working result in such a short time. Huge kudos to the team for their involvement and dedication. Now we are in for a big journey to the full-fledged game - we will have to reassemble the gameplay, prototype a lot and think about how to convey the idea and the essence of the game. So that despite the familiar to every resident of the former Soviet Union aesthetics the very idea of the game would resonate with each person, wherever he is. Wish us luck.

Thank you for reading!

Final stream is on in an hour! Let's play Ludum Dare 50 - Part Eight

Thank you all for getting us to that sweet 20 rating mark!

However, nobody seems to have found the hidden content in our little puzzle game yet :( I would hate for it to get to the end of play+rate with nobody finding it!

If you would like to have a go at finding it, the link is below and I'll try and get to playing as many of the people that play from now. I like to give feedback so I'll still try and play to at least give feedback after the deadline if I can't rate. Bitboy - To Corrupt A Game

BitboyDrawnArt.png

Hello!

This is the second post in a series that is meant to go over the development of Bitboy and how certain effects were pulled off. As a result, this post does contain spoilers. If you haven't checked out Bitboy yet, I'd appreciate it if you would. I've been going and reviewing the games of those who've reviewed mine. If you want to read anyways, go ahead!

This specific post will cover two moments in the game that used certain rendering tricks commonly found in other video games as graphical errors in order to make the game feel like it was being corrupted and deleted.

The Hall of Mirrors

This first moment is commonly known in other games as the "Hall of Mirrors" effect, and Bitboy makes use of it during the initial stages of corruption. Important to note is that this effect only would appear on Chrome as far as I know, as Firefox appears to render things in a way that prevents the effect.

Bitboy_CORRUPT01.gif

The best way to describe how this effect works is to first describe how video game engines typically render spaces where there is nothing. In engines such as Unity or Unreal, when rendering a frame to be displayed, they will typically start with rendering something as a background, whether it'd be a skybox, a solid color, or just black. Then they will render everything else after that, in terms of sorting. Once the frame is complete, it will be shown on the screen (Note that this is a massive simplication.). After that, the engine moves onto the next frame. However, the engine still has all the information from the previous frame-which pixels are colored what-on the new frame. This is where normally the rendering of a background of some sort would come in, as it would clear out all the information from the previous frame.

The effect above is what happens when the rendering of a background on a new frame is skipped, and there is no object rendered over the pixels to replace the information from the previous frame. It is basically the engine desperately trying to use whatever information it has retained to create some sort of cohesive frame.

Breaking A Splash Screen

The second effect I wanted to cover was the splash screen that occurs when the player refreshes the page after getting the initial 'WebGL error'. This is used as the first indication to the player that the game has remembered the current progress, and that the game is not going to return back to normal with a page refresh.

Bitboy_CORRUPT02.gif

Some may notice that the 'Hall of Mirrors' effect is used in this screen to help make the splash screen feel corrupted, but there is more going on here than just that. The logo is actively degrading. In order to for this to happen, the logo had to get turned into a mesh, so it had vertices that could be manipulated. This was simple enough, as programs such as Illustrator and Inkscape can export to a file format known as .svg, or 'Scalable Vector Graphics.' From there, Blender allows the importing of .svg files, which then get converted into a bunch of curves within the engine. Convert it to a mesh, and optimize the model properly, and then I suddenly had a 3D version of my logo to play around with.

Capture.PNG

After this, all that was needed was to move the model far away from the world origin point in Unity and animate its position. The way this works is by actively taking advantage of floating point precision errors. When game engines store vertex positions for models, they only have a finite number of bits to store the information for the position in. Since larger numbers have more information attached to them, models put out far from the world origin in game engines have the precision of their vertex positions reduced so they can be stored within the finite number of bits. As a result, if you move the objects far enough from the world origin, you get an effect such as the one in the GIF above, as the vertex positions of the vertices in the model get clamped to values with a large enough separation between them to make the imprecision of the vertex positions obvious.

For a better idea on how floating point imprecision effects models in a 3D space, this Reddit post contains a GIF of the effect on a car model shows it off a lot better than the 2D mesh I had used.

Next time, for the final post, I will doing more a postmortem on developing Bitboy and what I learned from it, as the overall response to the game resulted in some great lessons on pacing, subverting expectations, and the consequences of making such a game for a game jam.

Until then, stay curious.

The Assessment cutscenes storyboard comparison

As we are getting close to the end of the ratings, I thought it could be interesting to share how the storyboard compares to the finished cutscenes! As per usual, my workflow during game jams is really lacking and I tend to just draw the ideas that pop into my head or my interpretation of ideas from the rest of the team. But when discussing how the intro should look, I had to draw my ideas to better present them to the rest of the team, and the finished graphics ended up looking pretty much the same.

The Flower of Marasca - Post-Jam Update

The Flower of Marasca has been updated to V1.1. This is the post-jam version, incorporating a number of things I ran out of time to include initially, and addressing many of the issues that were raised in people's reviews.

The updated version is available exclusively on Newgrounds, and you can find the patch notes there too. The TIC-80 website has the original Compo submission, while itch.io has V1.02 with a couple of hotfixes but no additional content.

Whichever version you want to play, you can do so here.

Cursed Unicorn Update

ezgif-4-68882a3a33.gif Linux support is brought with this post-jam update of Cursed Unicorn. I don't have a Steam Deck, but I believe the game will run on it, as full gamepad support exists in this version, too. Would be glad if someone could try it.

  • Linux support (Possibly works in Steam Deck, too)
  • Better gamepad vibration
  • Pause menu
  • Bug fix: "Death" is always visible when he spawns at the end of the game
  • Better aiming for Witch. The comparison happens between the bullet spawn point and enemy now, rather than Witch's feet and enemies

The WebGL version shows you the first version of the game, instead of the post-jam. You need to download the game to play the updates. The WebGL version will be replaced with the post-jam version after the voting ends.

Just one day to try out Post Solis

Hey guys! LD '50 will be finished soon, and there's no turning back. We'd love for you to try Post Solis if you haven't already!

We've been told several times that we've managed to make an extremely BIG and AMBICIOUS game. So we'd really like as many people as possible to have time to play it before the end of Ludum Dare.

Anyway, very soon we'll release a full-scale version of Post Solis on Steam - with a lot of cool features, updated graphics, elaborated story and (yes, yes, dear confused players!) detailed tutorial.

And while we're getting ready for the results of the contest and the release, we'd like to show you a brand-new splash-screen for the upcoming game. In our opinion, it looks damn good and atmospheric!

full-white.jpg

You can play Post Solis right in your browser. We'll be VERY grateful to everyone who decides to try our game!

Almost at 100!

Please try out my game Dungeon Crawl if you haven't already. It's inspired by old school dungeon crawler games except in this one, you don't want to escape!

I'm trying to hit 100 votes by tomorrow and only have 9 left. So please give it a shot, vote, and let me know what you think. Don't forget to read the rules in the description before playing!!

Last hours

Can't wait to see ratings for our game "I Know What You Did Last Ludum Dare!"

I understand that ratings would be not as good as we wished, but anyway it's very inspiring moment! Less than a day till we start a development, redesing and rebalance this concept.

It gonna be logn and hard journey, and we wish we'll make it this time!

And what's your thoughts today about future of your projects?

I’ll play & rate your game!

If you’re like me, you waited too long to work on getting enough ratings for your game. Maybe we were busy, maybe we procrastinated a bit.

But here we are! Link your game in the comments and I’ll check it out tonight. Please consider checking out my goofy little game while you’re at it! 😄

Well ... the first build of our first Ludum Dare Jam (Extra) entry is up: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/her-last-day For now it's a downloadable Windows build, we'll see if we can manage to add a WebGL build as well, but we really need sleep now.

Sorry for not being able to participate in the voting earlier, there was so much to do! (and there is still much to do left) Looking forward to check out your games.

There it is, Her Last Day:Screenshot_01.png

I need 1 vote to be in!

Final Update For XORN

I overscheduled myself and missed the Jam. I'm thankful for the Extra category this year!

I learned a TON while making XORN. Here's a non-comprehensive list of firsts for me:

  • randomly generated world that remembers where things exist
  • remembered objects also remember which state their in (eaten vs uneaten gems)
  • randomly generated systems accounting for each other (gems preferring not to spawn in lava)
  • using Vector3Int to help with my grid-based movement
  • randomly spawned enemies that navigate existing world (albeit poorly)

I also got myself back into making my own art, improved my understanding of Unity overall, and played around with the experimental 2D Lights package for some fun effects. I'm especially happy with how my particle effects turned out for digging and eating gems.

Things I wish I had added (but probably won't because I've got to stop somewhere):

  • more particle effects to better represent gems filling a particular stomach
  • different powers, such as a trap
  • better game over/restart screen with local bests/high scores

Thanks to everyone that gave me feedback and joined me on my journey. Hope to see you all at LD51!

They're In The Room With You: The Immersive Audio of FEEDING_LOG_01172013

Screenshot (33).png

In FEEDINGLOG01172013, you need to pause and play an anomalous video tape to avoid being caught by the monsters it documents. My main goal in creating FEEDING_LOG was to use spatial audio to make this game feel immersive in a way that I'd never seen before in an FMV. In other words, when you play this game with headphones my goal was to make it feel like the monsters were actually in the room with you!

The trick is that while FEEDING_LOG looks like a video, it's actually a 3D first-person game in disguise. As the video plays, a 3D camera is moved around a virtual version of the basement in lockstep with the live-action footage. You can see what that looks like here-- the player is green, and the red and yellow tic-tacs are the monsters:

gif_smaller.gif

There are a couple other audio sources in the scene for ambience (like water dripping under a leaky pipe that appears a few minutes into the video and some ventilation fans scattered throughout), but I added those pretty close to the final deadline so I didn't have time to color-code them.

The actual process of syncing the movements of the player with the movements in the video was a massive pain--I did it by going through the video frame-by-frame and manually marking down every single movement made in the video. There was no trick or shortcut to it. Just suffering.

5E8C9F21-9835-4367-AC6F-7F5B91A2AB4C.jpg

As a bonus, you can also see the place where I scribbled down the RGB and hex code of that particular shade of blue that you see in the backgrounds of VHS tapes. I spent a good portion of the final hours of Ludum Dare 50 digging through my production papers like a feral raccoon, screaming WHERE IS MY BLUE? WHERE IS MY BLUE? because I kept forgetting the color.

After I made this sheet I realized that the Unity animation editor measured time in frames, not seconds, so I had to spend a solid twenty minutes with a calculator converting all of those time codes to frame numbers. The real monster in this game is carpal tunnel!

Anyway, if you're looking for a uniquely terrifying experience check out FEEDINGLOG01172013! I guarantee your experience playing it will be almost as stressful as my experience making it!

This game was brought to you by my apartment's terrifying basement!

Cover-Image-full-size.png

I'm a little sad to see this amazing event end, but it's gotta happen sometime! I had such an incredible time working on my game, and playing and rating some of yours. It's been so much fun to particpate in this crazy thing that is Ludum Dare, especially for this very special 50th event! I hope you guys have had as much fun as I've had seeing what everyone has come up with -- the amount of talent and creativity that is on display here always blows my mind! It also always amazes me how different everyone's games are.

I haven't had as much free time to play and rate other games as I would've liked, but I'll be playing a few more before the deadline tomorrow. If you'd like to check out my game, CRYSTALYSIS, I would really appreciate it! Thanks for all the ratings so far!

Also, a very special shoutout and thank you to Mike (@pov) for putting Ludum Dare on. I can only imagine how much work goes in to running this thing. We really appreciate all the effort, man!

Keyboard Cowboys Recommend...

keyboardcowboys.jpg

We're less than 16 hours away from the end of rating season! Sounds like the perfect time to put together a post of our favorite games of the jam!

We've been ecstatic with the amount of love that our game, Aloft, has been getting. As is tradition, we'd like to take this opportunity to spread that love!

The following are ordered from fewest ratings to most ratings, so keep that in mind! While none of these are in the danger zone, we think a lot of these games could do with some extra lovin'.

Slime Zone

Compo -- 21.14 Ratings -- @themadpangolin

slimeZone.jpg

This is a nicely polished, fun little platformer with adorable art and a challenging, survival-style premise. We are also very, very bad at it...

Pier Pressure

Jam -- 24 Ratings -- @luckyfeathers, @beefbone

pierpressure.jpg

A hilarious, visually-polished experience that has you doing puzzle-piece fitting with increasing speed and complexity. Don't forget to invest in a gracious dive!

Ram or be Rammed

Jam -- 24.5 Ratings -- @korfi, @rendow

ramOrBeRammed.jpg

What if a game about ramming cars had Mario Galaxy physics? This is a fun little game that answers exactly that question. Never has a slowly pursuing enemy truck been more intimidating...

Protect the Light

Compo -- 26.85 Ratings -- @untitled-studios

protectTheLight.jpg

This is just one super polished action-platformer, with an engaging gameplay premise. Shoot arrows at enemies to protect your light source. Shooting THROUGH the light source will power up your shots!

Steady Birds

Jam -- 31.85 Ratings -- @fractal, @filgru

steadyBirds.jpg

You'll be hard pressed to find a game with as much personality as this one! With a fun, unique premise, a wonderful art style, and hilarious sound effects, this one is an easy recommendation.

Eleventh Hour

Compo -- 33.85 Ratings -- @jeremy-ryan

eleventhHour.jpg

A wicked-stylish 2D brawler game where you play as a ninja cat with time travel powers on a train. What more could you want?

Healer's Handbook

Jam -- 43 Ratings -- @javi7, @chris1919, @lushboy-studios, @raytendo

healersHandbook.jpg

Just an excellent game all around. Wonderful visuals, crispy audio, and a refreshingly unique mechanic that is daunting at first, but incredibly satisfying to learn (Author's Note: This is my pick for most underrated game of the jam)!

Board to Death

Jam -- 56.28 Ratings -- @nsadie, @andre-sadie

boardToDeath.jpg

A strategy-puzzle game with a simple, chess-based premise. The depth of the game is immediately brought to light the moment you complete the tutorial, and it only gets more impressive from there!

STUDY LADY (cookie mix)

Jam -- 62.14 Ratings -- @peachtreeoath, @evedoll

studyLady.jpg

One of the more unique idle games we've played in a while. Vibe along to what the developers describe as an "incremental music video, and discover all of the fun visual surprises that this game has to offer!

...And that's all we have for today! Normally we like to do a few of these every jam (and go more in-depth on each one), but we've all been insanely busy these past few weeks! We hope you've all had as wonderful of a jam as we have, and we can't wait to see how things shake out during the results later today. See you all on the other side!

'Til next time! :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

https://s1lv3r-dr4g0n.itch.io/deliverydanmaku

Version 1.1.3 is out!

Now with: * ~90% less bashing your head on the ceiling! * ~50% fewer instances of walking through walls and/or floors! * ~1.618% more party!

Of course, when I say "finished", I mean "finished ... for now". My Trello board has still got plenty on it

Anyway, I'm amazed I managed to get this finished, even for the Extra category. The last three weeks have been full of ups-and-downs (including family issues, illness, technology issues....).
