Ludum Dare 50

Second LD

Hey! I've joined the LD community during the LD49 and I've decided to join again, this time with a bit more experience! I honestly love all the themes proposed and can't wait to start this challenge

My tools will be: - Unity, my go-to game engine for game jams, simple and with a lot of resources - Sfxr for some simple quality SFXs for my game - Bandlab, a website that i recently discovered and that I'm going to use for my game's music ( no, this time i won't publish a completly silent game ) - Visual studio, also my go-to IDE - Pixelorama for the occasional sprites - Google, the developer's best friend; I'm gonna use it for libraries, resources and inspiration

~~Sorry for my bad english~~

Progress Status

Hey guys! I started this game jam a bit late ( couldn't work on it saturday :/ ) but here i am spending every single hour of the last 2 days working on my game! I love this theme.

I brainstormed some ideas while in school and started programming today! So far everything has been going really really well ( much better than the other time, during LD49 ) and I've made a lot of progress! Seeing how I don't need 30 tutorials to make a DgSh game anymore and that I can make a working game alone makes me incredibly happy and shows me the progress that I've made.

Here's a quick list of what I've done:

  • :whitecheckmark: Modular enemy system that makes it easy to add new enemies.
  • :whitecheckmark: Modular weapon system that makes it easy to add new weapons.
  • :whitecheckmark: Re-generating room that spawns randomly enemies or lootboxes.
  • :whitecheckmark: Fading in and out transitions ( yes that's a huge milestone it took me hours to figure how to do it, yes i have a small brain ).
  • :whitecheckmark: Some different weapons and enemies.

What needs to be done:

  • :negativesquaredcross_mark: Main menu with options.
  • :negativesquaredcross_mark: Some way of teaching the game mechanics to the player without putting a wall of text in front of them.
  • :negativesquaredcross_mark: A way to effectively distinguish different enemies.
  • :negativesquaredcross_mark: A working sound system ( the one actually in place doesn't really work well )

I wish everyone a great rest of the day and a great rest of the game jam! Remember to play other's game to receive feedback and PUBLISH YOUR GAME no matter what, you won't "grow" if you don't get feedback from others

How It Started

Once I saw the theme I immediately knew everyone would be doing either a game with a soul reaper or a game with a farm, but still i found it interesting and decided to give it a shot. I missed quite a few LDs, which I now really regret since making this game made me remember why i loved partecipating.

How It Went

thumbnail.PNG I find LDs to be more of a learning experience than just a fun one, so for this game i decided to take a huge step out of my confort zone and tried to explore two areas which I completly neglected in the other games: 3D Graphics and Sound. This was the first game which I coded all by myself, without help from any decades old tutorials, something that made me really happy. I wanted to make a game which felt good to play and I kinda achieved that, but in doing so I made a big mistake.

I had spent a ton of time trying to solve sfxs bugs and game-feel mechanics, time which I could have ( and should have ) used to give the game a greater objective other than mindlessly farming vegetables. I had an idea in mind, but I simply couldn't make it in time: I wanted to make a farming tycoon, with more self reliant builds ( like a chicken coop that automatically gave you eggs, a dairy farm for milk and more ), which was eventually going to be the objective of the game: unlock the higher-cost higher-reward resource in line, and I'm kinda disappointed I didn't manage to do it. That also means that I could probably go back and revisit the game in the future

What I Learnt

ratings ld52.PNG You know what's easier than learning from your mistakes? Learning from others' mistakes. Here's what I did wrong, try avoiding these things in your next LD. - Time management: In a competition where time is limited, you can't afford to waste time ( not necessarily by not working but even by working wrong ) - Basics: Focussing on new things can be fun and useful, but don't remember that a game needs to have core basic fundamentals that give the player an objective and rewards him for completing it.

What's Next

I don't know if I'm going to give another try at making this game in the future, but what I know for sure is that i'm going to stick for the next LDs. Not only that, I'm also probably going to partecipate in couple with a friend, something that should make things much easier and lead to more polished and fun products.

I hope you enjoyed this Ludum Dare, farewell fellow game developer and until the next LD!

It's done.

Ladies and gentlemen, It's over. This is my first ludum dare after a while (I skipped 3 LDs, some because of time and some because of motivation). Man, you really never get used to the rush, do you? The hundreds of bugs, the corner cuts, the mind numbing coding sessions. But would I do this all over again? Absolutely fcking yes, LDs are a great opportunity to pump out an idea and a product, and the feeling of doing so is amazing.
