LD17

Hello!

I don’t know if I can actually do this but I’ll see anyways.

You may call me xhunterko. I do not like to use my real name on the internet. At all. Except for facebook, but lets not go there shall we?

So, about me.

Generally I suck.

Over the last 10 years or so, I have dabbled in several areas of game design, pixel art, and some video media.

I have created only, 4 , oops, 2 downloadable games.  One of which is a demo and the other is a sucky 2d snowboarding sim. I also have at least 4/5 failed/uncompleted announced projects. I have over 15 other projects written down on paper not yet even started on. When I do start a game, I want to do everything. Music, art, code, all done by me. That’s what indie means doesn’t it? So 10 years*15 ideas doesn’t sound like a good completion track does it? So, just exactly what do I hope to accomplish by entering this contest? Well, hopefully to pull something off. Like, an arm, a leg, or some hair maybe. Wait, I still need that. (Okay, I’m not that old, only, uh, 27).

All kidding aside. I hopefully want to accompolish getting an idea at least out there in something big. If I can do that, then I’ll know whether or not my philosophy is accepted and I should continue to try to make games. That being said, I hope to do something unique for this competion. Or else go out in a blazing ball of fire trying to do so.

Cheers all!

(did I mention this is only my second mainstream competition entry? the first was a failed attempt to win a flash executable for mmf2 because I thought the due date was later. my other two competition entries were for holidays so they don’t count.)

(and to admins, if this isn’t allowed, delete as necessary)

Nervous

Me

Me

Yes, only it’s the compo, not the car.

Serious post

Okay, okay. Enough kidding.

Tools Using:

Programming: MMF2/Flixel+Flashdevelop (if game makers aren’t allowed, i don’t see them in rules so they probably are)

Art: Graphics gale+Gimp

Sound: Sfxr+audaucity (there’s another noise maker out there like sfxr right?)

Music: Most likely FL8/Milkytracker

Extra Hardware: Drawing tablet (maybe), microphone, mouse <-important

Vitamins

Don’t mistake the power of vitamin B!!!

It’ll give you more energy then a swig of coffee will. And there’s no crash! Nada!

Combine it with coffee for an even better combo. :)

Now, where’s my tissues, alergen would be better.

Going to work…(earlier this evening…)
Signs are up on door….
back home, finishing dinner
then dishes, seeing what theme is, start clothes maybe to brainstorm…
oh good, hasn’t been picked yet!
I’ll be looking forward to see results, after doggy eats so she doesn’t go demon on me…
well, I got another 13 minutes before start…
guess I can quit this and start laundry…:)
WOOT!!! Island is the theme!!!
Lets get started!!!!
Time to start laundry for brainstorming….
Might as well post starter blog…

Log 2

Ideas I have now:
Hover-type Platformer!
-Use your hoverjets to collect

parts and fuel gems for your

ship! Escape the sinking islands

before you go down with them!

Grapple puzzle idea(ha ha ha)
-Your island’s stability is

getting worse. Grab stray parts

of earth with your grappling hook

equiped mining ship to glue up

your island. Watch out for air

pirates and other miners!

Brolly Hopper
-Oh noes! It’s flooding my old

boy! Quick, escape the flood by

jumping from roof top to roof

top!See a jump that’s too far?

Not a chance with your brolly!

Glide from roof top to roof top

in this island city. Can you get

to safety before time runs out?

Use tea for longer glides! Don’t

forget cheesey crackers either

for higher jumps!

Architech
-The gods have demanded that, in order to appease their rath, a giant statue of their chieftan, Lord Watchamaicallhim. To do this, we need to make bricks out of the islands stones. Are quarry’s are limited. So after that, you must venture to other islands and take from those resources. Be careful though! Other tribes are knowledgable of the gods demands and will do anything to stop you! Fight them by throwing the stones at their warriors! If you kill enough in the gods names, the gods will be pleased by your sacrifices, and let you use their powers. Be careful though, time is running out for judgement. If the gods are not appeased for x days, they will wreck havoc upon our lands.

Let’s at least start with some music. And hope lmms doesn’t crash on me. A quick check on that one guys predictions first…

Island Defenders
-Our island is under attack! Stop the invaders from destroying the command tower! Pick from one of three scenarios: Tall Island, Long Island, Fat Island. Defend with gun placements, unit types, and secret weapons to keep the the Nazi’s off our shores til reinforcements arrive in x days. Once we get that radio tower rebuilt it’ll bring ’em even faster.

Song1 done…

Paper time!!!!…(it’s raining, I hope the power don’t go out <_>)

Log 3 I guess

I now have, on paper:

Name: Island Jetter

Type: Open World Movement: Hovering, stays still on ground + collection Style: 2d

Story(short version): You just crash land on an island after a fierce storm during a plane race. You notice it’s still raining and the island chain your on is starting to sink. You need to collect 4/5 parts to get off the island. You equip Steam boots, Sonar Headphones, and Magnetic gloves for part retreival. Can you get off the island and still win the race?

There are also, hopefully, 3 different endings. Win, death, and lose conditions.

I also have a rough map.

Last blog tonight.

Breakfast

Not shown is the orange juice I’m having at the moment.

Maybe I’ll post screenshots soon.

Animations!

Swoosh, Swhoosh, swoosh! You can see the waves moving. Can't you? :)

And now it’s time for small break!

I really, really, really wanted a scarf. Oh well, antenna will have to do.

Premade engines, libraries, basecode, and game makers are allowed. Ludum Dare is about creating games, not about writing A* for the 8th time. If you want to start from scratch, great. Lots of people start from python + pygame, or just with DirectX. But other people prefer to start with a higher grade engine, and that’s OK. What’s not allowed are libraries that other people don’t have a reasonable chance to be able to use. If you had to sign a NDA to get it, it’s probably not allowed. This is to strike a level playing field for everyone.”

I’m guessing that means, if I found a hover engine for MMF2 earlier (an engine for a game maker) then I’m sure that’s allowed. I’ll just have to look at it and then franken-code it to make it unique to fit my needs. Although I wish an admin would make that more clear.

De Plane! De Plane!

Your finished plane.

Your finished plane.

Well, here’s a completed plane. Pretty convenient that I have some of the parts already.

:)

Nah, I’m gonna redraw the wing, and an engine piece. Tail looks decent as far as I’m concerned.

There was this old movie we watched when I was a kid. It was about missing luggage and this plane would fly over a set of islands with primitives on them. The luggage would drop out of the plane, and two guys found some. Wanting to know where more of it came from, some how, they manage to get into some city and cause hilarious havoc. And then get back again. I don’t know what it’s called. Extra bonus points from my judging to anyone who knows what it is.

The gods must be crazy is a similar concept.

Caves

Tiles I think are mostly done.

Lets see, graphic wise, I need some item parts, bushes, trees, and, uh, interface.

So, time to hit the random generators!

Phoo…

Well, next time, I’ll know better. Work on engine while waiting on theme. Bleh.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and submit something. But I doubt it.

What with an hour and a half before church. And that lasting at least a couple-three hours, I’m outta time. I’ll keep plugging away at something. Just think what if knytt had a jet pack for jumping, and a plane with missing parts. And you get the idea. Rats.

LD18

Ready….

This time!

I’ll be using flixel since I know it a bit better now. I’m getting my engines wrote up and basics leveled out. Here’s hoping for a complete game this time around!

Panic mode off

At first, when I read rule #2, I did panic.

Then I read this and calmed down:

“Base code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry. To do this, make a blog post.”

Since I already did declare it, I don’t need to worry. So, that gives me 4 days to make every concievable game engine in Flixel…

Any chance of getting that countdown ticker at the top of the page on my face book page somewhere? That’d be really neat, I think. Eh, maybe I’m being trivial here.

I don’t use facebook, so I’m unfamiliar with stuff available for that. If you do an app search, there’s probably something. Just sync it up with the clock above and you should be good.

Time, Gentlemen, no really.

I am posting this and then I will amend this. One moment please.

Edit:

Okay, so according to this post, I am 2 hours behind locally. So, I believe that means that I have 22 hours until ludum dare starts for me. For reference, I am located in southern illinois. Someone correct me if I’m wrong on my logic here.

There should be a pair of countdown clocks at the top of the page. If you use the Firefox plugin NoScript, you may have to enable javascript for Ludumdare.com

There is. I’m just wanting to know if that’s universal. So that when it hits 0:0:0 here, I’m not gonna be 2 hours behind everyone else. Maybe I’m just being paranoid.

(0:0:0….my new theme suggestion for december)

Because I can this time :)

Hmm, whats worse. The mess, or the photo.

Thanks for that link! I’ve only been to the main website and thought it was a linux only. Silly me.

Is that a Lego setup on the left shelf? Is it a battle or some kind of scene?

LD 18 is a go-go!

I can’t wait to learn a lot of useful things to do in flixel!

Wrap arounds, controlling counters, tasty explosions, maybe even a starfield! This is gonna be great!

Now if only I can think of a name for this shmup. But first order of business, learn chronosphere. Eeep.

(evolution next time people, next time!)

Robot Unicorn Tower Defense

No seriously. If double rainbow zombies would’ve won, I seriously considered that title. But, as per tradition:

Om nom nom nom scarf!
