Ludum Dare 45

Working on the 1st (and only) cutscene.

Have a good chunk of the friendly maps finished for the game. Now I'm building the cutscene that introduces the baddies, along with the tilesets for those bad maps. For now though it's bed time!!

The Nothings - Post Mortem

This was only my 2nd Ludum Dare. I don't do as much game development as I'd like, so it was a bit of a struggle to finish a full game in only 48 hours. I spent the first 6 hours attempting to simply come up with an idea -- the theme didn't necessarily inspire me at first. Eventually, I came up with something that I thought would be original and a fun game to make. Out of that, came The Nothings

I learned a lot from this jam. I don't often finish games that I start making, so the time constraint really forced me to focus on the scope of the game (I definitely could have done better with this, particularly with focusing on some of the core mechanics earlier on vs. trying to make the game look pretty). I also learned that leaving the more exciting and fun part of your games to be worked on at the very end likely means you'll get a watered down version of them. Especially with time constraints! I wish I would have worked on a boss battle early on, maybe it would have made it into the game in lieu of some of the NPC sprites and dialogue.

Can't wait for the next one! Play my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/the-nothings

Ludum Dare 46

Ready for LD46!

This year I took Monday off so I can really dig into this weekend without worrying about being burnt out by Monday morning. I'm super excited to be making games with y'all again! Especially with most of us quarantined in our houses anyways.

Last year I made The Nothings which was a top-down platformer/shmup -- https://digitalbombstudios.itch.io/the-nothings

I have no idea whatsoever what I'll make this time, but I'm looking forward to another really fun weekend!

Finally have a solid vision in mind for my entry, The Cold Walk Home! It's going to be a narrative heavy game where the player wakes up on a cold mountain and must find their way back home, but will hopefully mash some genres together in an interesting way. This is the first (almost) minute of the game.

Cold Walk Home -- Update #2

After only 4 hours of sleep last night, I might need some coffee soon :grimacing:

Added the 2nd major aspect of my game, The Cold Walk Home, which is top-down exploration and resource gathering. Some resources must be found outside your camp as you continue your journey, such as food. Next, I'll be focusing more on the "idle" aspects of the game where you must stockpile resources for your journey.

Implemented a big chunk of the combat system for my game, A Cold Walk Home, and with it the ability to smash boulders. Next up, another map, and enemies to fight on said map. I cut my scope down drastically so that I can spend some time polishing this tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have the core game finished by tonight.

After a loooong day, I finally have level 2 almost completed. I also made some music for when you're in the forest, finished up a rudimentary, but functional, battle system, and added in more story. All that's left is level 3 in terms of the core game. Then I just need to work on menu systems, sounds, more music, and polish. Overall, things are looking good for a 48hr finish!

Been up since 5:00 AM to try to get everything finished in time! Introduced a bug this morning causing WAY too many enemies to spawn. Gotta get this fixed, then wrap up level 2!

P.S., does the LD post editor constantly not save your posts correctly? It's super annoying.

Finally Finished -- A Cold Walk Home

After 48 hours and about 8 hours of sleep total, I finally finished my game! I honestly think it's the most complete game I've ever managed for a game jam. It's also the first time I wrote all my own music and sound effects, and within 48 hours so I could submit it for the Compo.

Overall, regardless how I place, this was a huge accomplishment for me. Check out my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/a-cold-walk-home

A Cold Walk Home -- My 2nd ever game jam!

Waking up this morning and playing everyone's games! What a fun weekend. There are some really great games out there! After 48 hours with very little sleep, my game A Cold Walk Home is also up and available to play. There are some balance issues (would love to fix, but I don't think it's allowed with Compo submissions), but overall it's a complete game! You can check it out at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/a-cold-walk-home
