Cat Troubles

We are having a lot of cat problems but I heard about Ludum Dare a while I go thought I’d check out the website. One day until event -> It’s a sign , Ludum dare is the perfect way to escape my problems.

Hooray fantsasy ! Boooo reality!

Special mode/ single player is relative/ cat problems / cartography nerds

Finally have time to write a blog post about the small game I made. I tried to implement two nice mechanics, and make them fun. Let’s see how you like it. It was my first game jam and I only had a couple of hours time but I really wanted to try Lib Gdx out and submit a game. I definitely had to scale down my first ideas but I hope you still have fun!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces

My girlfriend and her friend definitely had fun playing this single player game multiplayer :P This was half an hour before the end of the submission hour but I really enjoyed watching them have fun, so I wouldn't have minded missing the deadline. Yeeey submission day! JenteEva.png

PS for animal lovers: I started this ludum dare with a post about my cat problems, my cat is now home and healthy ! :) catsmall.jpg PS for nerds: definitely try the special mode, the bullets are supposed to follow paths as though they would be on a sphere, check out the cassini map projection if you want to know what I mean.

Real life playtesting

Hey guys we all love the feedback we get from other developers in this game jam. But what is really satisfying is having your friends playing your game. I encourage you to show your game to as many people as possible especially irl. I did and some of my friends really started a competition for the highscore with this crazy result: highscore.png If you've played my game you will understand why this is a crazy score :p Even my videogame-hating girlfriend and her friend had fun playing an obviously single player game together JenteEva.png

If you want you can give it a go at https://shakedimus.itch.io/changing-spaces https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces I will return the favor and give you those sweet sweet ratings. :D

Twin stick shooter with a twist!

It's a twin stick shooter with a twist and if you really wanna see a twist play special mode :D https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces https://shakedimus.itch.io/changing-spaces I'll repay the favor off course and give you those sweet sweet ratings!!!

My cat chalenges you!

Are you so bad you can't beat a cat? Let's find out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces Haha sorry for the cheesy line CatPlay.jpg Her highscore highscore.png

Your game is... uhm... special

Is not what you want to hear ! However I did add a special mode that will make you say that, can you figure out what it's all about? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces 2.png Here's a hint Cassini.jpg

Highscore shattered

The highscore of my game has just been shattered! Can anybody do better? :D https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces Highscore2.png

I focused on a simple mechanic

and I actually like it. I made a twin stick shooter but bullets that go out one side will come back on the other and you can actually should yourself. This accomplishes two things: - Players who just shoot wildly will endanger themselves and run out of space (Padum! Tsss!) -You can use this mechanic to kill enemies creatively Here you can see me using it to make an "ambush" Ambush.gif

Also in the special mode your bullets move unpredictable and you are forced to shoot enemies from point blank or have a rogue bullet flying around:

SpecialCombat.gif

I'm pretty pleased with these mechanics although a lot of other thing can be improved a lot. If you want to try it check : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces

In what way can you use this mechanic?

I Finished my backlog of LD games!

I forced myself to first finish my long list of games I should play, before adding new ones to the list. Now that I finally finished it I'll allow myself a blog post ;) A small excerpt: GameBacklog.png It's not been silent around my game either, there has been a lot of great feedback and I loved seeing people playing it on stream but what's even better is people playing it in real life. Some guys at my office started a bit of a competition to get the highscore and they've managed to drive it up to 593 beating the last record by only a couple of points : highscoreBoard.png If you wanna do an attempt at the title you can find my game at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces or https://shakedimus.itch.io/changing-spaces. I'd love to see a score of a 1000 :D Ambush.gif

A positive note about the theme

I saw a lot of people complaining about the theme but I think this is a bit against the idea of a game jam. This is my first game jam but as I see it the restrictions in time and subject are what drives you to be creative, think outside the box and maybe make games that you wouldn't normally make, as I did.
Because of that I love the theme! I love every theme ;) A good example of thinking outside the box is pre-alphabuild. I didn't make this game but just really liked it, I liked the graphics, music and the mood but I especially liked the tetris-like mechanic combined with the RTS genre. I think the developers would have never come up with this idea if it wasn't for this theme. So I just wanted to say ALL HAIL THE THEME!! :D https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/pre-alpha-build preAlpha.png

A liitle bit of competition

Hi guys I know in five days the rating will end and you get your rank but I want something now! :D That's why I want to do a micro-ranking. If five people post their game and we all play and rate each others game we can then each make a blog post with a ranking of the others, let's say by tomorrow evening ( in 28 hours). Who's up for some competition? paste your game below ! The first five can join my mini-ranking :D !my game : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces Ambush.gif

Keeping that highscore in the family

Although I couldn't, my brother made it his quest yesterday to get the high score in both game modes. It's only fitting that when the ratings are over it's family who has the highscore , let's hope nobody prevents that from happening.... Pssst: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/changing-spaces highscoreBoard3.png

LD=try out new tool?

Last Ludum Dare was my first game jam ever. I tried out LibGDX and I found it's a really nice way to get to know a new tool. Does anybody have a good tool or engine I could try out this time around. I saw a lot of people using Godot , is that any good It can also be graphics, audio, whatever helps me make better games.

Graphs > Games

I haven't got much to show for my game but I've got some nice graphs underlying my mechanics. Now it's just the trivial matter of programming this thing... ;-)
