And I’m done! (not with the game :D)

Woah. I can’t do it anymore. I will be writing a followup Post-Mortem, BUT NOT NOW! I’m happy that I actually managed to finish something playable (quicklink), but to tell you the truth, I feel like I’m dying. Getting old? Uwahhhhhhh

So here’s the main screen of the game. Feel free to call me nuts when you play it ;). There are a few bugs, but I’ve done enough debugging this weekend, I don’t wanna anymore……….

And here’s an ingame picture. Yep, the background spells ‘LD’. Yay, LD 4evaaaaar!!

Chicky And The Cats: Dorobou Neko! Post-Mortem

I finally feel rested enough to write the post-mortem for Dorobou Neko!! Let’s keep it short, shall we?

The good:

  • Ever since I played Prof Layton, part (I have no idea :?), I wanted to recreate the Toy Car minigame, as it seemed simple, funny, and isometric! And in the end, I did recreate it! This idea spooked around in my head for at least a year, and when I started to have that idea, I tried a few AS3 isolibs, with no real success (everything was just too slow).
  • This time, I jumped completely into the darkness, using Flixel for z-Ordering AND isometry, and it even somehow worked! Awesome! That’s the spirit! Always trying something new!
  • I made another game with Chicky! And cats! Those mischievious cats!!

The bad:

  • I didn’t follow the theme, I followed the 1000 kittens! You see, the last LD Tiny World was abysmal for me, my entry had no inspiration at all. And when the theme was announced, I knew the same would happen, that’s why I followed the kitten running gag :)
  • I jumped into the darkness!! Little did I know that I would be debugging for at least 6 hours this weekend! Just debugging! Because the zOrder was not completely correct, and without real zOrder, isometry can also not work right :<. You can still see bugs in zOrdering ingame
  • with that, I lost time, and I actually forgot to implement working open bridges. Yes, Chicky can do a moonwalk over them…
  • and, also because of no time, I didn’t had the time for ‘real’, or let’s say, ‘better’ animations. In the intro, Chicky and the cat are running funny (reference to the recent chapters of One Piece^^), as it is a lot easier, not to animate legs. But in the end, I even gave the isometric cat that running style. Because I was so sleep-deprived, I felt like dying
  • also, when you watch the timelapse, you can see some parts that didn’t make it into the compo version: the level editor! At the end of day one, I had an editor which produced a correct level, but it was so buggy I couldn’t put it in. That was one of the key features I really wanted to add, plus a server component, ‘CREATE YOUR OWN LEVEL’, but, you know, this is LudumDare, there’s no time!!!
  • and I had no time anymore to add Chicky’s trusty flying plane :<. All I did was modifying the offset

Anyhow, everyone, let’s have fun rating! Like McFunkyPants said, I’m also not here to ‘win’ anything, I’m here to have fun 😉

100 entries rated!

Actually I wanted to write my favourites, but scrolling through the list of my rated games, I got sad because there are at least five in my list that have less than 10 ratings :/. and not (!) because they made unrunnable entries (ok, it applies to _some_ of them)

Please consider rating those as well!

Challenge accepted!

the game to be ported/published shall be the last LD entry, Chicky And The Cats: Dorobou Neko! In fact, I uploaded a lite version already in BlackBerry AppWorld to hunt for comments

the full version shall have a level editor, wayyy more levels and several other game modes

Also, if you saw PoV’s post about how to start: i also plan to take part in the Marmalade thingie because you GET A FREE PLAYBOOK! for the fun of it 😉

Good luck to everyone!

October challenge completed!

With just a few days in October left, I’m happy to announce that my October challenge has met its 1$! Yay 😀 challenge completed!

It’s the game that was made in the last LD, with the long title “Chicky and the Cats: Dorobou Neko!”, a puzzle game that seemingly made some people think a lot, but in overall wasn’t that bad. That’s why I thought I should give it a try

What was done additionally: I put all the ideas and critics that I got from the LD community into the game, added more levels, more content, previews, one more enemy, the level editor (finally!) and made a few more intro animations. Although, as October came close to the end, I decided to mark version 0.5.0 as feature complete for its release and uploaded it to BlackBerry AppWorld. Available since yesterday, checked today, saw some downloads and in about 6 weeks will be able to collect a buck via paypal 😀 haha

So here are a few more screenshots. If you want to play it, I uploaded a light version to Newgrounds. I don’t know exactly why, but the flash file is being scaled there, so the graphics don’t look like as they do on PlayBook or BB10 – check it out for yourself 😉 !

MO-TI-VA-TIONNN !!!

I guess, I’m in again :D. YES. Because it’s awesome to make games! And because of the re-design of the website, due to which I just found out: holy moly, PoV, you are the one who made Smiles ( O.O’)   . I didn’t know! I didn’t realize! orz. Gotta do my best to make an awesome game as well ;)!!!

You are the Villain, eh?

8 am something in germany, finally woke up, getting up, brushing teeth, writing a postVillain eh?
First idea: Kitty destroying a living room while you are a laser pointer –> nice, but too much content to draw
Second idea: space invaders, you are the commander of the invaders with three buttons: shoot randomly, fly towards enemy and shoot, go faster + fly lower + in reverse order –> nostalgic, but not my style
Let’s see if I come up with a better idea 😀

Lunch break! And progress

I have an idea of what I want to do, but *hahah* I never used that framework before :). Which means it will be like all-or-nothing for me, at least I will have learned a lot, and that’s why we are here, right ;)?

The Butcher – Post Mortem

See the butcher!

Annoying all the vegetarians a bit, this game is about killing innocent chicken :D! Fruit Ninja style!

What went bad:

– I used Box2D for the first time. In the warmup weekend, I played around with Axel, like Flixel with Stage3D support. But after seeing the theme, I didn’t feel like creating a platformer or similar anymore. And then, it got nasty, because it started to be BUGGY!!!! On the first day, I even refused to go to sleep until I was able to split an image correctly

– I was very demotivated to write lost of code. Don’t know why though, and if you look at my code, it’s hardly 1000 LOC. And if you look at the timelapse, it’s mostly drawing chicken :)

– The code is still buggy! In Box2D, you can set the debug data to true, and if you do, you can see that the boxes are actually completely off the image that’s drawn :D. That’s why I had to remove multi-cuts, because naturally you couldn’t cut a chicken a second time when it’s cutting area is somewhere else^^. Also, I cheated with the graphics, at some point I gave up doing them correctly and just made all cuttable graphics square

What went well:

– I used Box2D! Wanted to do that for quite a while, like….last year, but I never had the chance or drive ^^

– I created another game! Inbetween, I wanted to give up already, but then I just started drawing more, and like nothing – the game was finished! (though I removed many features)

– THIS IS MY TENTH LD48 ENTRY!!! WOHOOOOO!

making a minimalistic game?

Reading all the posts, I can see I’m not the only one unhappy with the theme :/. I guess I’ll go with re-programming an old-time-favourite of mine…

Is anyone already re-programming PONG :D? Make it more minimalitic please ^^!

Status update

Don’t have that much to show, but worked out my idea, and so on…but looking at all the other updates, it looks like I was not the only one looking up the wikipedia-article to get some inspiration ^^

Day one over!

2am here, and done for today. Game status: you can win, you can lose, but you can’t go over Lvl5 yet. TODO: Graphis, music, sound. Staying minimalistic as I can/wantUnbenannt

Binary Land.

Finish line is near!

Concentration is fading, I’m having a hard time writing this post. My game does not seem to have bugs, all that’s missing otherwise is music, sounds, and one sprite

Unbenannt2Such a big black screen….

Also, I can’t get off my chair now…not because I don’t want to, but because I can hardly stand anymore :D. Noticed that yesterday as well after a whole day programming.
