Ludum Dare 46

My first Ludum Dare. My first Pico-8 game.

While i'm definitely used to making many games in Unity, I decided it would be best to do my first Ludum Dare by learning Pico-8 and developing a game with it. I think of it as a simple first-step that teaches me a new tool, challenges what im comfortable with, and keeps my scope a lot simpler (in a positive way). I'm already excited to try some things out. Happy Ludum Dare everyone!

Completed my first Ludum Dare! (and my first Pico-8 game)

It's been a crazy 72 hours, but Pump-ko Energy Degradation is done!(a title update may be needed).

I gotta say, doing my first ludum dare with an engine I was not accustomed to, not to mention having to make a game within a short amount of time, was a bit of a challenge.

Overall, I was super happy with the experience. While I didn't get to include all of my ideas in the project (even having to end the game early), I feel like I may have a good framework for something in the future. Working within the limitation of Pico-8 had been like a dream-come-true, emulating the experience of developing on a console with large limits!

Still, I do wish I could have done more content than build-up. That isn't necessarily Pico's fault, I just had never used it before. But now I have! And i'm ready for the next Ludum Dare.

Flappy man is happy! Thanks to all cool kids for playing AIRTIME!

Team Terminal Velocity/Avoid the Ground Bros really appreciates all the cool feedback and comments for our super cool flappy-man-skydiving-simulator AIRTIME!

Keep playing the game and reviewing! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/airtime

I should have done this earlier, but it would be cool to see everyone's best survival times. My best is a little over 3 min. How long can you avoid the ground?

T. Hanks for the 35 ratings on AIRTIME! + how the flappy man flaps

Hi cool people!

It's time for the obligotory "thank you for rating our game!". But I want to give you more (info), so how about how we were able to make our regular man a FLAPPY man (i.e. traditional/physics-based animation hybrid?)

Well through a few neat tricks actually! With a rigged model, Unity's configurable joints, rigidbodies, colliders, and the secret sauce of a secondary (hidden) animated rigged model that the ragdoll model copies, you can turn those boring hand-crafted animations into physics-based acrobatics! This vid I found the simplest at explaining how to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pX-PobRLzk.

Seriously, try this trick out on your own games, its super fun. Plus, the animations have the adverse effect of effecting your movement, which may lead to some interesting things!

Anyway, thanks again for playing AIRTIME! Please tell your friends, your kids, your grandma to go try out and rate AIRTIME! as well! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/airtime
