Ludum Dare 48

I'm in!!

Programmer + Godot = success (I hope).

I'm tired of beating around the bush and never getting to do any tangible game development, so I decided I'm gonna be using these 48 hours to learn Godot from zero, and apply that knowledge into making a game in the next 48/72 hours (haven't decided if I'm going to be in jam or compo mode yet, though!). I'm expecting to be able to do something cool, but even if nothing ends up working out the way I imagined, I'm still going to fight tooth and nail to cross the finish line.

Good luck to everyone participating!

Pre-Jam jam?

As I said on my other blog post, I'm completely new to game jams and game engines, but not programming. My goal was to use the time before LD48 starts to learn as much of Godot as possible.

Well, I probably won't be winning any awards for it, but I got the hang of the engine in many aspects! I've managed to implement Pong, the only thing missing from it is an UI and actual game states (title screen, win, lose). What should have took an hour or two took almost 6 because of inexperience, and I'm still not sure if I've done 100% sound choices as sometimes, for some reason, the ball manages to push my paddles out of the X axis for some pixels, even if I actually made them all kinetic bodies and had proper layer/mask configuration.

But I can't complain, it sure works, plays like pong, and even has pluggable AI into one/both of the paddles. I'm sure 3 days will be enough to implement SOMETHING resembling a game when the jam starts (:

I'm off for a nap now... it's going to be a fantastic friday work day for me, going to sleep almost 4am in the morning.

Pre-Jam jam, the end

So, I took a bit of time to finish up the pong game I was making as a warmup to this LD, and surprisingly enough I ended up finishing it on "the deadline" (the start of the actual jam that is). Really happy with my progress on Godot, and I hope I can come up with something cool for the voted theme (at least cooler than some janky pong).

Good luck everyone on your compo/jam game!

Day One's almost up...

I figured there was going to be a lot of underwater diving and cave exploring with this LD's theme... oh well, hopefully someone more creative will move his game away from this motif, as for me, I guess I'm in the diving game group ;)

Can't screenshot all of the art I drew for this game, because I don't want to spoil my game's idea too soon! I figured it's going to be somewhat unique in the "games featuring water, divers and the color blue" genre :p. What I can say now is that this game will strictly follow an arcade game structure, with art and gameplay (hopefully) to match that feel. My first day wasn't so productive due to some personal stuff, but there's still time to implement everything now that the art is relatively complete.

I'm seeing great ideas and screenshots today and I can't wait to play some of those games. I already have some profiles bookmarked for monday. Again, good luck everyone!

Godot is underwhelming

I wrestled Godot for hours trying to make 2d objects float up through the map, but it seems that objects with their movement vector's angles close to 90º tend to get stuck or not behave properly when you do a movewithslide, or try doing movewithcollide and do the slide manually.

First disappointment of the jam... having to change something in the design of your game because of technical issues.

Someone should have told me game jams were THIS exciting before.

I feel cheated, but better late than never. My Godot game is now released with 5 minutes left on the clock! (I admit I used most of the submission hour finishing it up...)

While I'm sure technically this isn't the greatest thing ever, and it really isn't, since there are some bugs and corners cut here and there, I'm really impressed with myself. I honestly didn't think I'd complete a game in three days, considering I never had prior experience with Godot (I literally chose it because it was the first hit to "engine that exports to html5..."). Please excuse the lack of music and sound effects, as this had to go once the time got short.

I wanted to implement more features like extra levels, coin chest spawn points, etc. but what's here is complete. This is a game inspired by 80's arcade games in which you must protect your underwater treasure from cave divers, while not being able to attack the divers yourself.

The game is a bit easy right now since I spent so much time on the code behind the game, I forgot to design an actual good level, but it would be dishonest of me to sneakily update it, so it is what it was on submission hour. Hopefully it's still somewhat enjoyable.

I hope you have as much fun with it as I had playing it, and feedback is not only welcome, but highly desired, I really could use some pointers, technical or design wise.
