First ever LD, first ever game, running behind, omfg, etc

So I have this great idea for a game for the theme. I had a pretty good idea the last few days, but I hit a major snag and… yeah. But it’s okay! Because I’m working on the new idea now. I should be able to crank something out tomorrow morning, so let’s hope the deadline is none-too-strict. I just wanna get it right for the theme, y’know?

The game /might/ be called “After School”, and it’s a realistic depiction of Domestic Violence (I’m not having houses try to kill you, for example)

It’s my first ever game. :/ WD to increpare for picking such an evocative theme.

After School

So, uh… I just finished my game. I made it with Game Maker 7, and it took aaaaaaages because I was essentially learning how to make games. At this rate, I’m glad I made it, even if it did take me a little under five days to make (eek!).

I’m really happy with it. It’s a game where you pick dialogue options. Try not to give Ted’s Mom a reason to hit him.

Any tips or criticisms are warmly welcome.

Just tried it there; I like the concept a lot, but I couldn’t seem to select anything in the first menu (clicking didn’t do anything), so I couldn’t play it…

Ruh roh! You mean that first set of dialogue choices, like in the screenshot? I can’t seem to make that happen on mine. I’ll try getting some friends to test it. Anyone else having that problem?

Yep, exactly like that! I wasn’t able to highlight it red – all three options were in white.

Holy cow! This game most definitely does the theme justice!

Excellent work! I left a comment on twitter :)

I’m probably gonna upload the source somewhere, then. I can’t replicate that problem at /all/. The highlighting and click detection are triggered by watching mouse_y, so maybe that’s it. Hmm. Do I sound like a programmer yet? I’m using Vista… maybe I’ll hack together a keyboard number-selection thing.

jaz, drop me a line when you upload the source. i’ll look it over.

I sent you an email, dess, and I can confirm that it seems to have this problem on XP and not on Vista, and that XP people can /sometimes/ play it by *shudder* installing the yoyo games plug-in and playing it in the browser. Eek!

I enjoyed this. I think that the only problem it has is the length/ability not to fast forward through conversations. I understand that this adds to the mounting sense of frustration and desperation, but I think that if you wanted it to be an effective anti-DV ad that would reach more people (as the ending seemed to indicate), it needs to be standard ad-length (or be more varied).

Oh, you can press space to skip text. I was thinking of shortening the in game “days” and making them a little less independant (even though this conversation in real life really /is/ like talking to a primitive NPC) so she’ll, like, remember if you said something nice yesterday or whatever.

Ah space bar. How silly of me. I think that renders most of what I said invalid.

Not at all, I didn’t mention it anywhere. I should have really let any key do it. NO WAIT NOT LETTING ANYONE SKIP IS A GREAT IDEA HOLD ON ITS PART OF MY VISION

hmm; getting problems with mouse selection; it doesn’t seem to work (Except when my cursor is in the top-left-hand quadrant of my second screen, and then clicking doesn’t work). I have a feeling that a windowed mode might fix this. ah well :/

Jaz reporting in

I’m doing this as straight as possible. Planning a straight interpretation, chunky mechanics, my signature crappy graphics, made in Game Maker, 48 hours from scratch.

Pretty clear weekend ahead, so I’m giving it my all. I won’t be staying up extra late, though. Nope. Not happening. Well, okay, maybe.

This is my first full LD. I don’t have any libraries or artwork ready, although if I can, I’m gonna make it post-apocalyptic, and brown. Why? Because I’m playing a ton of Fallout 3. This will actually be me trying my hardest not to make Fallout 3. I have no idea what I’m going to do for music, but if all else fails, I can always infringe someone’s copyright and *bag’d* fwgh! wffhffwhfg

0001 First attempt at sprites

This is my first shot at the sprites for my game. This is just to show you the baseline I’m working from.

0002 First concept

This is a concept of the game itself. I’m planning on some detailed, cute sprites, but I reckon if I worry about that later on and just get working, fun times.

Set in the Nuke-proof bunker where humanity persists following a terrying Nukular Holocaust, you’re the official in charge of managing dig operations. The idea is to mine out farms and additional living space while the surface cools off. Just, you know, make sure you don’t encounter any amorphous carnivores who’ll do everything they can to ingest every last scrap of humanity. That would be terrible.

Control is like dungeon keeper: you direct your minions, you don’t get to pick which one does what. You’ll mark areas out for mining, then dudes will come along and do that. You’ll mark areas for guarding, or whatever, and Marine types will… anyway. It’ll look like lemmings: minions mill around on a 2d plane and react predictably to events. This is all conjecture until I can get the thing playable. Might find my old copy of fruityloops and knock up an mp3, but time is always short. To arms!

0005 title screen - early

So this is what I have so far. Download link is: http://willhostforfood.com/?Action=download&fileid=82059

Windows only, I’m afraid. Let me know if you have troubles with it.

0006 play screen - early

I managed to utterly simplify my graphics and get a huge boost in productivity and morale. I totally failed to take pictures of the food I’ve been eating, or my horrifying desk, but there’s always LD16, right? 😀

Honestly, I’m pleased with it so far. I need to work out what the hell you’re actually doing, though… maybe destroying a block will uncover a thing that gets you to the next level? It started in my head as an RTS, where you’d tag blocks for digging by your dudes, build buildings into the backdrop, and actually encounter real caverns with amorphous bad guys in there :O but I ended up leaving it on while I made food, and discovering how cool it gets after about five minutes. Your population reaches a sort of critical mass and then ruins the landscape and dies off.

Oh yeah, right click to heal blocks, left click to damage them. Look out for the odd mutant 😀
