I’m in!

Hello!

This will be my first Ludum Dare.

About me: I’m a highly ambitious person who loves programming — why wouldn’t I be here?

I’m going to be using Java with Eclipse, Paint.NET, bfxr, and LMMS. I’ll also see if I can write some basecode to post here tomorrow, although I’m really lazy when it comes to things like that.

Other than that, good luck to you all, and may the best coder win!

Dat Theme

Alright, I wasn’t really hoping for this theme to win, but it did.. D:

Anyway, things are nice and set up. Here’s what I have so far:

progress1

Of course, I’m just coding the basics into place. I have NO IDEA what I want to do yet! I think that will come to me as I sleep, because I’m going to bed now. Good night Ludum, see you tomorrow!

So far, so good

I’m currently 3 or 4 hours in after sleeping. Here’s what I have so far, the screen scrolls as time passes, different rates for sky and floor:

progress2

It’s time to add some obstacles!

Well, there have been lots of delays so far in my coding, but after several hours I have managed:

progress3

He has a little animation and everything! 😀 Time to make the city that he gets to destroy all on his own.

Well, walls certainly do work

Yep! Walls! There will be all sorts of walls. Walls over lava, walls over you, walls that want to kill you.. Well, maybe. If I get it done within the next 24 hours! There will also be bosses. Quite ambitious because enemies aren’t even in yet!

progress4

We have music! Wooo

Although you wouldn’t be able to tell from a picture, there’s now music and sound. Pretty cool little piece, and wall collision works 100% correctly now. Wooo

Nice work! Also, I feel you pain with sound in Java. Especially with this Ludum Dare being my first experience with Java sound, I really do… That said, good luck with your game!

Enemies, health, colored text!

Lots of progress has been made. I might actually manage to finish half of what I meant to do! 😀

progress6

Progress! Building a level!

Here is the town so far, with all of the villagers exterminated shortly before taking this photo. Rest assured, there are villagers!

progress7

I’m finished! You can play it now!

After 47 hours and 56 minutes, I have submitted my work! You can play it right here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25/?action=preview&uid=15753

I had a really fun Ludum Dare, especially this being my first. I hope to see you all in 4 months, assuming the world doesn’t end! 😀

I’m in, too!

Hello everyone!

I’m going to be participating in LD26! Really excited; this will be my second Ludum Dare (is it even better the second time?)!

I’m going to be using:

» Language: Java!
» IDE: Eclipse!
» Graphics: Paint.NET!
» Music: Linux MultiMedia Studio!
» Sound Effects: BFXR and LabChirp!
» Screen Capture: Chronolapse!
» Food: Whatever crosses my path!

Progress is being made!

So I finally got the basics down: Input, loading images, loading maps, entities. Time to add some enemies, block contrast, better art, sound, block collision…. 😀

Post Mortem!

Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted all of my timelapse screenshots. So, no pictures :( This will be brief.

What went well:
– I did music within the first few hours, so that was out of the way.
– I did sounds every single time I made a new feature that could benefit from sound.
– Paint.NET worked great as a level editor!

What went badly:
– I’m not any sort of composer, and I tried to do a complex musical piece. I’ll keep it a bit more simple next time!
– Something went wrong with my input grab methods. They seem to glitch out occasionally, locking you out from controls and sending you into lava.
– Wacky controls. I always struggle with getting these right.
– I think I spent way too much time playing around with the initial engine! It was just so fun D:

Earth.

You are here. If you don’t do something fast, it will be destroyed.

Earth

You’ll probably control some sort of a ship with a hyper-improbability drive or whatever it is, against Vogons. Yeah. 😀

Then again, I might change to do something more innovative. We’ll see.

Playing Around

I decided to play with some new features I’m adding, ended up with this:

earthvyou

My game took a bit of a plot twist; now, the goal is to destroy the Earth. I have a second mini-earth in order to test scaling. He even shoots lasers and has a miniature explosion animation! 😀

Progress has been made

sharky

There are still a lot of things left to do, like adding a water effect (the shark is floating above the sea floor on a cushion  of air right now!), but it’s pretty great so far 😀

Also, I should probably add a goal and fix his tail in the movement animations 😛
