LD 40

What a great LD! Excited to play all your games!

Done and done. I really did enjoy this Ludum Dare. Much less stress and frustration than usual, much more sleep, better food. My workflow was pretty smooth and consistent and I am proud of what I made. Thank you all for making Ludum Dare the best game jam.

My game: SiniS is not in Space. I was thinking of a good name for a space themed shooter, and suddenly realized that I just made a tank as one of enemy types. Online-high-score based shooter where you try to survive enemy waves with as bad ship as you can.

In for 8th time straight!

The time really flies!

Again, I will have little time to make my game, but I will try. I don't want to break my combo!

I will have very inspirational Saturday, but with no access to internet. I hope to have my idea complete by then and spend the Sunday coding without any major breaks and fails.

I thought about using Scratch this time, because, as I found out, it is actually quite powerful, but probably nah, I will stay with JS.

My arsenal:

  • Notepad++
  • Google Chrome
  • PHP myAdmin
  • Krita (maybe)
  • Audacity
  • SFXR
  • Git
  • Virtual Dub
  • Daanav automatic screenshot capture

I have some ideas for the game in mind, let's see if the theme works with them.

I am hoping to create something small and original. And simple, but clever. I would love to make some small engine building thing perhaps.

Really like my idea so far! Running late, but will catch up hopefully

My attempt at combining two truly classic genres - break-out and snake.

Progress after 3 hours.

I gotta say I finally truly understand why so many weird of those weird glitches where you break 3 tiles where you should have only broken 1 happen.

Check out this sick combo I just got! Also, progress!

Very satisfying indeed!

Did some experiments with visual effects, also there are both physics and gameplay improvements! Really like the way it is coming together.

It looks much better in 60 fps and full color, stay tuned.

Coming soon to your browser!

Also, online highscores are coming, and perhaps multiple game modes!

Day 1: Success! Play Snake-Out now! (pre-pre-alpha)

I got my thing playable, got some nice visuals and several play modes.

Play now: https://boltkey.cz/snake-out/. Arrow keys to move, R to restart, Esc to go to menu. Post your highscores and favorite mode! Currently, Arcade is the only mode with those sparky powerups.

Tomorrow: Sound effects, online leaderboards, logo, graphics, general polish.

Authentic tile sound effects

Audio recording was fun :)

Done! Come and grab a spot in the leaderboards

Had some spare time so I added online highscores!

Snakeout development screen lapse

I just uploaded a time lapse of Snakeout - a game combining breakout and snake.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQy9HFKiTGw

This was first LD with a 4k monitor. It is such a luxury, finally comfortably fitting text editor, the game AND browser console, all on one screen.

Play here (web) and visit the game's LD page.

Mobile compatible games

Long train ride on mobile. Post games that can be played on Android!

Snakeout now mobile friendly!

Play even from your mobile here. The leaderboards are pretty crowded, can you still snag a spot in top 10 of any game mode?

Go rate it while you can! LD page.

Happy with my idea, after brainstorming for about 2 hours awake + 5 hours asleep

A classic pick up and deliver at heart. You have a truck and try to fit the oddly-shaped pieces into your cargo space, delivering them to their destinations, getting money for that with which you improve your cargo space and truck speed.

At this point, I can imagine the full game and it being fun. I hope to have fully playable mock-up prototype by hour 12.

My truck is riding around! I'd call that a success :)

I am not 100% happy with how it is turning out so far, but it is definitely something I can work with. I have (technically) playable prototype ready, and many ideas too. There will be upgrades of your truck, many more shapes, more interesting maps. Right now, it is just a proof of concept. And it turned out alright. I definitely have a vision, which is a good sign in this stage.

I wanted to be in this stage 3 hours ago, I am running rate already. I however was good on time during other LDs and there are very few (pleasant) interruptions like a Korean restaurant with family, so I am feeling quite good with time.

Also, my vegetable flat cakes are delicious. It feels good to eat healthy for a change.

Some progress. Also, happy half-time everyone!

It didn't move too much in past 9 hours, but I am feeling ready for the next half of the jam. I hope I can pull through, bite the bullet and complete it in time with most of the features I want to have. I think the idea and core concept is alright and I don't want it to fall flat.

Congratulations to all successful COMPO participants!!

This one has been great, and I am so happy for all of us that we made it once again.

I am quite proud of my game. I am happy about how she turned out, I hope you'll like it too! I came up with the name about 15 minutes before the deadline, but whatever.

Someone's Unity game from this LD created a 21 gb log file

So, something kept filling up my disk space. I finally decided to run drive usage analytics to find a output_log.txt file sized at whopping 21gb. It apparently was produced by Unity. I don't really know Unity, so I don't know how to find the source game. The path is AppData\LocalLow\DefaultCompany\Game Jam SEP-01-2018\output_log.txt. Is there a way to find which game to blame?

Also, a reminder that this can happen. Be careful.
