Am I doing this right?

This is going to be my first attempt at ludum dare! I don’t know how far I’ll be able to get since I I’ll be using raw C++/OpenGL… If I have time for sound I’ll probably use sfxr and irrKlang.
I’m uploading a file containing some old text rendering and image loading code I might want to use.

I don’t seem to be advancing too fast, I have a hexagonal tile system working, though;

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ land

Starting to take shape

I’m sailing around the map, woo!

This looks like one I’ll be eager to try out. Rock on!

Fog of war

There’s not much to interact with yet… I have to work faster!

Looks like this game is shaping up to be somewhat similar in theme to the old “seven cities of gold” game. I never played it though.

Dropping from the compo

If I were to wrap stuff up and upload something before the deadline it probably would be a very crappy game…

So I’m switching to the jam!

For some reason it’s the buttons and dialog boxes that took up the most of my time so far, I probably should have used a library…

I’ve released my entry as a crap entry… I guess if you want to you can just release and then do a Special Jam Edition.

Oops

Looks like I missed the jam deadline… Here’s the latest version of my game: download.

Controls:

– Left click to move

– Right click to pan the screen

– Space bar to center the screen on your character

This was my first Ludum Dare and it was super fun!! Next time I’ll finish in time 😉

Very nice. I love the look.

Here’s my basecode: https://sites.google.com/site/ludumdarebob/basecode.zip

It’s just some GLFW initialization stuff and font rendering with a framerate-decoupled main loop skeleton.

Here’s the plan:

– Start programming in raw C++/OpenGL with almost no basecode because I’m so hardcore

– Spend 48 hours working on game engine code from scratch

– Decide to do the jam instead because I haven’t started the game part yet

– Rush out a crappy game with no sound or music

I think I can do it! 😀

Idea

I must admit I wasn’t too hot on this theme either (the runner up on the other hand…) but those are the rules 😀

Here’s my first idea:

At the start of the game, Old Man hands you a random item and tells you that it’s dangerous to go alone and that you should take it.

Every time you die you start as a new adventurer but old man gives you a different random item. The first item is now captured by the enemy but the progress of the first adventurer is not reverted.

When the Old Man runs out of items to give to new adventurers, it’s game over.

I can see a big problem with this being that in order to be interesting I’m going to need lots of items with different abilities and might not have enough time…

A non-linear game world would be interesting since you could decide on the best course of action based on the item you got. In addition if the world is procedurally generated you’d get a new world to explore every time Old Man runs out of items. I guess that would make the game a bit like a roguelike.

I’m going to go 2D but I don’t know if it should be top-down or a platformer or what… I guess I can decide this while doing the tile rendering code…

Bailing out already…

Ok so, while working on the procedural level generation for my game I got some new ideas that I now can’t wait to try out on one of the longer term projects I have been working on, and… I’m no longer very motivated to finish my ludum dare entry :(

So yeah, FAIL
