I'm in- First Ludum Dare

Me and two of my friends will be entering our first ludum dare this weekend! We'll be using Game Maker Studio 2 as our main engine, and then Aseprite and possibly Blender for models, and FL studio and LMMS for music. Good luck everyone!

A final idea now!

We're a first time group so we don't have any existing code ready (like fools we decided to make it on the spot), but it seems to be going well. We chose an idea focusing on slimes and the quest for treasure: all true adventurers sacrifice slimes to get what they want, right? Our concept slime: slime1.png

We're working on our sprites now, and after this tileset is finished, its the end of the first night for us.

Final update for this night

We've slowed our pace, but now have some of our tiles done.

Here's an example of our overworld: v1.png

We've pretty much finalized our idea, and now we are working on adding in mechanics to make it more interesting

Another update

Slow start today, we are working on finishing movement so we can start making levels. We have a few mechanics decided, but our main character is still not decided. What do you all think, slime king or novice adventurer?

Here's an image of some of our art so far: (no background yet) v2.png

Day 1 has ended

This is our first Ludum Dare, and we're doing surprisingly OK for the fact that we've never made a game before and are learning on the spot.

As day one ends, we are as tired as our little slime as he passes out gif1.gif

Tomorrow will be a long, hopefully productive day. We're working out our mechanics now, but we may have to cut down on the number of levels drastically (as in 13o89357918398 to 1, but hey 1 is all we need right)

Good night

Day 2, a slow start

It's day two of the Jam, and we got off to a slow start today. Due to our inexperience, it took us a while to get our mechanics working, but now we have a working movement system and slime shooting now.

gif2.gif (I have no clue why the gif stutters like that)

Due to time constraints we might only have one level  but if we have time we'll definitely add more.

Expedite- Finally Finished

Expedite was our team's first Ludum Dare game. In fact, this is the first game we've ever made.

This whole competition has been a great learning process for us.

Our Game

You can find our game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/$126663 We'd love it if you could play it and give us good critique.

Our game is sort of short, as we had to cut down on the amount of total levels, we've still shared it hoping to gain advice.

Our improvement

@boathd, who made most of the game, had only used Gamemaker Studio 2 once before. We went from making a menu in 5 hours to coding in movement in 5 hours!

@Dementation, who made the music for our game, as well as the menu code. Our music went from this... whatever it is to this. Dementation has no formal music experience, so this was a great improvement.

And finally me, @bananananer-joe. I've never worked in pixel art before, and I'm proud of the assets I made.

While it may not be as fleshed out as other people's submissions, this is our first: both game and game jam, and we're proud of the results. Ludum Dare was really fun for all of us: we got together on a group discord, talked, made jokes, listened to some random music and laughed at good memes.

While we probably won't win any games, it was great fun. We'll definitely participate in the next jam. Good luck to everyone else!
