I Welcome The Ludum Dare Insanity

Brethren in passion of game development, I have taken to simple and non-remarkable tools, for this is my first Ludum Dare, and the question raises even if I can keep everything in this project to a span of 48 hours using simplistic tools and limited time to keep it realistic in vision and scope.

Still, I embrace the full chance to watch and join many others, both partially nervous, partially excited, and with the overlooming feeling I have no idea what I’m getting myself into. As stated again, nothing I am using is impressive, but they are what I have decided to arm myself with for the event at hand.

-Using RPG Maker VX Ace (yeah, I know) as my development tool (so programming in Ruby)

-Sound effects are going to be completely home-made in Audacity

-Music is using a free orchestral sound library and being mixed in Sony Vegas

-Using GIMP and MS Paint for spriting

-Streaming all of this on Twitch in 5 hours from this post: http://www.twitch.tv/duskgolem

I almost feel like I’m making a garage game lab on my desktop. Regardless, excited to see everyone’s entries in the end, and let the games begin~

Video & Screens of Ludum Dare project after 16 hours of Twitch.TV development

About to hit the hay, but what I have come up with so far in the last 16 hours. This was my first time doing music for a game of mine, so it was interesting. I feel I may have overstepped the minimalist theme a bit, though.

Dude, your video feed is awesome ! I had it on as background while I worked, and was thoroughly amused. I even liked your prequel before the theme was announced, highly amusing. I cannot wait to play your game. wish I hadn’t seen the statue part already (I won’t leave spoilers here) but it definitely got me 😮

My finished LD game; Blank Slate

Finished my game for my first Ludum Dare, and now available for play! A 2D exploration-puzzle game. A nameless protagonist wakes up and heads out to a barren land full of puzzles known as the White Zone. Seaming with oddness, and with an abstract flow, what is it that our protagonist continues on for?

I had a lot of fun making the graphics (especially in the later half of the game), but this was my first time doing music for a project and I feel I could of done better. Still, I hope you all enjoy it.

I’m in, and making a practice game.

Totally in it this time (had to skip out last time), making a practice game right now about a character wandering into some Autumn Woods following an urban legend. See how that goes, and will post some here about it as it quickly comes along.

As previous years, I’ll be streaming my progress.

Warmup game ‘The Wailing Woods’ music completed

Making a warm-up game quickly, which I’ve entitled the Wailing Woods. Spent five hours today composing music and finished the music for the miniature project, I have a good feeling I might be able to score decently on musical composition this year on the competition at least, I’m not musician but I think I do an okay job at fulfilling the role and have gotten good at making quick loopable things that fit the mood.

Samples of today’s work (April 23rd):

Credits Theme

But For a Moment

Woods Whistle 1

Echo

And something I refer to as non-music, Unlogic.

Not the best music ever, but proud to have made these and five other tracks in five hours. Hope it comes as easily for whatever the Ludum Dare game project is, and hope to continue practicing and improving and get this warm-up project done before the contest.

Hitbox Stream

Many will be streaming on Twitch, but have made the switch to streaming on a site called Hitbox.Tv, so will be streaming my development cycle there instead. Stream will start in about 30 minutes: http://www.hitbox.tv/AestheticGamer

First few hours results; All Music Complete (16 tracks), Character sprites done.

So about to hit the hay on the first day, basically got character sprites and music done. However, liking how it’s coming out. My game stars a character I am tentatively calling ‘Marshmallow Monk’, and an antagonistic spider who can possess different things. The character is escaping death row and is taking to the underground… But  also using the theme in a secondary, more psychological way outside of the obvious.

Simply drawn sprites for Marshmallow Monk & Raspberry Spider:

MC$Gooey Abomination

And completed 16 music tracks, which is admittedly what most of what the first few hours consisted of. Here are a few samples:

My Little Marshmallow

Underground Drone

Crystallize

Circus

Skull

Stepping in Goop

Gooey Abomination

Along with 9 other songs. Very odd music, but the game is odd so hope it works.

Also, not in the game obviously, but some people in the stream I’ve been holding have been doodling Marshmallow Monk, so I’m happy. Credit here to CookieCyatt & Xenobladebuster:
