Cats Can Do That: Making a Demake (LD39)

catscandothatdemake01.gif A demake of one of my old LD games

A while ago I started making a demake of Cats Can Do That, a game I made for LDJAM39, but using Pico-8 instead of Unity as a challenge for myself.

I used this as a way to get used to that fantasy console, but also to see how I could make a complete game —with a very limited and safe scope. I started with no schedule but to only take a few months and see how the motivation comes.

Motivation went away after a few weeks unfortunately due to different events in my life (confinement, you know…) but the substance of the project made it easy to finish. I just need to redo what I have made but at my pace.

There were some unexpected difficulties that came though the development. It’s difficult to make interesting variations of cats with the extremely limited color palette, but I am happy of my template system. I have only one sprite of the cat and I switch color palettes to draw the cat I need.

Also Pico-8 numbers have a maximum positive value of 65535 😬. I finally coded an arbitrary point number class. It doesn’t handle decimals nor negative numbers but this was an interesting challenge to try to bypass system limitations just to be able to show the balance at the top of the screen 😅.

Cats Can Do That is a clicker game where you have to manage your power plant using cats and toasts.

Now it’s almost done, it misses some polish, the tutorial and a bit of balancing before releasing it. This is coming soon…

Short Sequel to My Jam Game Coming Soon

I had a ton of fun making my game Irving Forrest Technologies and [REDACTED] (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/irving-forrest-technologies-and-redacted) for LD46, so I decided to make a short sequel to it that will be showing up on my website (ludumdaremuseum.weebly.com) at some point in the very near future. So stay tuned!

Thanks to everyone who played my game! You won't be disappointed by the sequel!

Would you give me your opinion?

Rush Bomb doesn't stop!

Yeah, you heard it right, we continue developing Rush Bomb and it's now available on itch.io!

We will upload devlogs and demos of the game so you can keep track of the development of Rush Bomb.

Visit the game page if you want because there will be frequent updates over there, like game engine upgrades, more gameplay, and a lot of hacking! :D and if you really want you can subscribe to the project (if you are really into it though...).

Hope to see you there!

A "bit" late, but: My favourite LD 46 games!

So... guess who already had a list of their favourite LD 46 games with short descriptions ready for WEEKS, but didn't actually post it in time because they wanted to make it all fancy with thumbnails and the like? And then never did that? This dingus. And since "making it fancy" will probably never happen now, I should probably just post it, late as it is!

Top 3

  • HEAL ME PLZ by @pandanym, @unpostiche and @pietro-ferrantelli, an ultra-polished game about supporting a group of adventurers
  • Birdie Burglars by @xellaya and @ddrkirbyisq, short, sweet, possibly too cute, and perfect in all regards
  • Primed by @gimblll, with the best interpretation of the theme that I have seen in the whole jam

Complete experiences

Innovation

  • Keep the Keep by @kutase and @firellon, a "strategic puzzle that looks just like tower defence, but really, really isn’t"
  • to Leave by @5imon, a puzzle game where figuring out the game is part of it - but start with the "monk's voice"
  • Advise the King by @arden, a chess-based deck-builder
  • Pass it On by @alanc, @angelina, @gary-kim, @connie-liu, and @ryan-jung, an async online game about keeping a message alive through obfuscations
  • The Totally Convenient Feeding Machine by @jonathan-lorenz, which explores a simple but novel mechanic in several different levels

Atmosphere

  • Morphology by @yanrishatum, @theodote, @elvendan and @shess, in which your small newfound pet might evolve into something else
  • Embers by @anuke, which could improve on gameplay, but not on much else

Wildcard Category

  • In A Game Wherein by @ssstormy, a text-based game in which delightfully meta things happen

What do you think of the rating system?

Personally I would like it to be more a little more competitive, in cheers when you are new to ludumdare some are passionate about playing and giving good feedback, but if someone took my opinion I would love it as in the grade tab they would tell you where You stayed within all the projects to put a little more competitiveness, this in my opinion. It is also worth mentioning that it was a good experience as several eh read, I not only came to talk about the rating and feedback, but also to ask what platforms their games upload, apart from itchio, NewGrounds, kongregate, Amazon, Netlify, PlayStore, AppStore ... if anyone knows of more platforms to upload more places in the next ludum.Screenshotem20200605/em062742.jpg Catch The Mouse Expirience I did the game in 24 hours for the ludumdare 46, but I did it jam because I did not do the music, then my experience was difficult at first why I tried to see how ludumdare worked, then I started playing other games, some will be honest very good and others who lack that passion of trying to do something good, in the end I managed to do few levels and promise next in updates, I made a complete game and stupidly difficult as were the games from before that made you perfect your technique and explore ways to overcome the challenges and the randomness, I know that it is not the genre of many but I did it to remind myself how a game would be mixed between today and the past choosing the classic platform but with a touch of runner, hoping that some enjoy this experience that later of the month I managed to upload it to the playstore, it works with the touch, keyboard or Mouse and if you connect a controller it also works despite the fact that it is very simple, I would also love your opinion and experience. Catch The Mouse Game I translated the commercials for the game in 7 languages (Germany, France, Brazil, Spanish, United States, Japan, China, which were the countries that played my game and I think they deserved to see it in their language, I also paid attention to several in their comments and I made the button to slow down the mouse a bit, I gave them 5 more lives, the PixelArt button, a final boss that I think will happen to me with the difficulty but still it happens, there are around 49 scenarios and 7 worlds, I I would love that if they manage to pass it they would upload the video as several showed it to me in the demo and see if there are more details to continue improving it, make it reach more and most importantly have fun !!! IMG-20200521-WA0024.jpeg If you read all my mega opinion I leave you my game link and I hope you like it:

ScoreSpace x Alakajam! | June 19-22 | 72h jam, streamers compete on the winners

sspace-x-akj.png

The next Alakajam! week-end will be held on June 19-22. For this 9th event, we're joining forces with sister community ScoreSpace to offer something unique! For 72 hours, you will have to make the best game you can from scratch, solo or as a team ; but after the ratings phase, the best entries will be picked for a gaming competition, where streamers will fight to reach the highest score they can!

You can discover below the complete schedule of the event. As I'm writing the theme suggestion phase has just started:

Feel free to check out the results from our previous jams to get a feel for how things are run.
We hope to see you there

Silicon Soldiers is Going for a Full Release!

vlcsnap-2020-06-06-09h50m55s739.png

Hey everyone, the Ludum Dare group I worked with last go around has decided to take our project and expand it into a full game! It is going to be a co-op, top-down shooter with a focus on battles akin to raids from WoW, FFXIV or Destiny 2.

If this sort of game interests you the socials we just started are here:

As for the picture it is my first real attempt at doing multiplayer after years and years of single player stuff. It's a little bit different but Godot makes it really easy to work with once you wrap your head around what needs to be done. There is a video of it in action here. The biggest struggle was the lobby system but after scrapping my first version of it I ended up in a place that is really easy to work with and maintain. While the team works up our first class design I'm going to refractor the weapon handling from reporting shots fired to trigger pulls. This will let me handle burst weapons a little easier so instead of sending three messages saying how many shots were fired I can just say that the trigger was pulled and the client will know, based on the equipped weapon's database entry, how many shots to pop off.

Roadkill is now in Beta

Post jam version of Prototype Towers

Aaaaaand here's the long overdue post jam version of my game! https://marbles88.itch.io/prototype-towers

I lost motivation but the most important thing is I never left it in an unfinished state. I originally planned to have an endless mode but 1) it would push back the "deadline" and 2) while testing, I realized that it's gonna be tiring and stressful since you will keep on fixing your towers. Nevertheless, I still enjoy the key inputs aspect of the game.

This version has the feedback taken into account and there are 3 difficulties. There are 5 levels and I added 2 more types of enemies. I also changed the color palette.

I'm gonna move on and make a different game since my focus is on learning.

The progress is slow since i have lots of projects, but it already looks better. Thank all of you who gave me reviews, i appreciate all the criticism :)

Alchemize Remake - now with AI

Hi folks!

Two years ago @stavu and @jakier made Alchemize - a completely original strategy board game for two players. I was their entry for Ludum Dare 42 - "Running out of Space".

After making a game together for the latest jam, Stav, Yakier and I joined forces for an Alchemize remake - now with improved graphics, new sounds, and the ability to play against the AI, providing a complete single player experience for the first time.

screenshot_1.png

There are four difficulty levels, from Easy for casual play, up to Insane, which is for experts only!

Play Alchemize remake!

And please share your thoughts on this new version. Enjoy :)

Post jam progress of the Game Cheat or Die

Post Jam version of "How to raise a Demon" is finished!

Banner1.png

Hey everybody!

After more than a month of additional development we finally published the post jam version of our LD46 entry on itch! Despite fixing bugs, we focused and making the game a pleasing experience and making it feel complete. We made a lot of improvements for the game, such as: - completely new level design - tutorial - more and better voice lines, triggered by events - more and improved sound effects - ability to sprint - visual effects - changed font - enemy healthbars - menus, options, credits, etc.

Try it out here: https://green-acorn-studios.itch.io/how-to-raise-a-demon

There is a WebGL version available, however it has some issues, therefore I highly recommend you play the desktop version if you want to have a good experience!

Can i delete my submissions?

Hey, I have two empty submissions from years back that I couldn't finish in time. Is it possible for me to delete them somehow? I couldn't find anything in the edit tab.

Another Night is now Open Source

We've decided to Open-source our Ludum Dare 46 Jam Entry - Another Night.

It's published under MIT License and can be found here - https://github.com/DataGreed/LD46

The game was our first experience with 2D dynamic shadows in Unity. That led to some complications - e.g. no support for proper shadowcaster shape adjusting for animated objects and performance problems at start (now optimized), but turned out to be quite nice.

30641 (1).png

You can freely use anything from Another Night in your own projects:

  • source code
  • sprites
  • animation
  • music
  • sounds

Everything was made for the jam and no 3rd party assets were used:

  • Unity 2019.3.10f1 used as a game engine
  • Rider IDE was used to code
  • Sprites were drawn with love and animated in Pixel Studio for Android
  • Music was composed and arranged on Teenage Engineering OP-1
  • Sounds were recorded on Teenage Engineering OP-1 and processed with Audacity

Just don't forget to mention us in the credits (see the license file in the repo for details).

Roadkill is Finally Out

Release.jpg

Roadkill is here! It was a great experience to develop this game, we would have liked to add more levels and enemies, maybe focusing a little more on lore, but we need to know when to stop, plus we have another project in our hands and we prefer to focus more on that.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the development of this game, Enjoy.

Little Shop 0.1.0-beta Release! (a.k.a. The Original Gamejam Vision)

Finally! The 0.1 beta has arrived for Little Shop of Wall Street!

In this video, DW walks through the new features rolled out both in-game and behind the scenes for his LD46 game jam title.

https://youtu.be/baMlNqGgiV4

Side Notes

This release is an important one for me.

First, off it's the first "beta" release which I've categorized as a moderately stable release, and includes a "complete gameplay loop" on purpose. There are still plenty of bugs (as the video even showed) but it works and playable.

Second, this release is the original vision of what I pictured the gamejam submission to be when D'Arcy and I came up with the idea back in April. Many months later, I have that release which says a lot about my prototyping and experimenting process (i.e. I'm too slow).

Lastly, I have multiple versions of the game out there including Linux/X11 and Windows versions. There's still a lot more to learn and do with the while devops setup for my projects, but this is a great step forward and can be reused with all my Godot-based projects moving forward.

Until the next one-- thanks for playing.

Millions of Minions OUT NOW on Steam!

mcwithbafta.png

For LD45, we made a game. It placed 783rd overall. Whilst that isn't an amazing placement, it had potential so we decided to go further with it!

The sale on Steam ends today, so this is your last chance to buy it at a REALLY cheap price. (Worth noting that the game is still in Early Access so bugs will sometimes be present). https://store.steampowered.com/app/1219420/MillionsofMinionsAnUnderground_Adventure/

We'll also be releasing on Xbox!

Neural Network driven music composer (not mine)

Not sure if this has been posted here, but I'm going to use the heck out of this in the next LD. Watch the maker's video for context https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWxfnNXlVy8 or just download and start fiddling around, I'm certain you'll be surprised https://github.com/HackerPoet/Composer/blob/master/NeuralComposer.zip

Strategy+Card Game.[Magic the Combine] Introduction.

You will be adventured at the time of Ishila, the wizard of one of your colleagues who defeated the devil with the warrior. Aren't you curious about what will happen right after the warrior defeats the devil? One thing is for sure, it's not about being happy for a long time.

Combine various magical properties to fight the enemy! The player uses six attribute magic to fight the enemy by combining them according to the situation and making them into magic with various effects.

Try more than 50 different kinds of enemies and different equipment and items that add fun to your games.

This game doesn't have to worry about making a deck. Reduce the complexity and increase the fun of card games. If you've had a hard time playing card battle games because they're complicated, this game would be a great match for you!

A (rather late) Reflection on my Ludum Dare 46 Entry

New Post - How I wrote Alchemize AI Algorithm

tl;dr:
I wrote this post about how to approach writing AI players for board games, and how I did a unique player to play Alchemize. Check it out!

Two years ago @stavu and @jakier made Alchemize - a completely original strategy board game for two players. It was their entry for Ludum Dare 42 - “Running out of Space”.

Recently we released a new version of Alchemize, with the ability to play against AI, in 4 different difficulty levels.

I wrote a post about how I wrote Alchemize AI Algorithm, explaining the challenges of creating AI for a unique board game. I describe the solutions I chose, taking into account strategy, speed and player experience.

Picking up the development

The recent LD46 was quite good, so after a while @daniel_michaeloudis and I picked up the demo we made during the event. We've posted 5 new updates, and we post new ones every few days. I like the way it's going, and it's already progressed far past it's origional standards. Here's the link: https://arcus.itch.io/peculiar-farming

Cold Heart (from Ludum Dare 26) becomes a mobile Game!

Since I created Cold Heart to Ludum Dare 46 I've never stopped to work on it.

Always alone, I've decided to make an Android version, remaking everything.

I have not finished yet, but the project is very advanced, with Skill system, RPG-like progression, scenario selector, upgrades and much more.

Really hard work alone, but very funny at all.

Coming soon with news! Thanks for the support :D 💙

I hope I will be able to make music next time

for a game, and that no one will replace it with a copyright-free one, without any explanation. That's all for now... (It didn't happened with my music... yet. They already had a musician, so I made sounds. I tried hard, but my generated [+ somewhat modified] sounds lost to some sounds found by my team. But I really hope that I will not experience something like this, again... Thank you!)

Finally Squareon hit google play store !

How to make games with Löve (Youtube tutorial series)

I have been making games for about a decade now and basically wanted to make the tutorial series that I wish existed when I started.

These videos are aimed at people with little to no previous knowledge, so they might be too basic for most of you. But I figured that it might help someone :)

Specially if you are looking to learn a new framework / language for the next LD. Löve is a popular choice among the top 100 ranking games every jam. All of the entries that I have been a part of have been made with Löve.

There are 6 episodes in total. The plan is to continue with more complex tutorials down the road. I am really new at the whole "making videos"-thing. So I appreciate all feedback! :)

Fated

I made a game for another jam recently and wanted to share it here!

Fated is a small game about struggling against and overcoming your own fate. It's a hectic bullet-hell-style game and has deeper strategy than first meets the eye.

Stuff that I've been up to

I recently participated in LOWREZJAM2020, where you have to make a game in 64x64px -resolution!

It was quite an interesting experience. I'm surprised my story-driven approach worked so well even in such strict limits.

My entry is playable on browser on itch.io if someone wants to to try it out.

Screenshots.png

And yeah, it was really about time for me to finally make an ITCH-profile.

I'll be making a catalogue of my past LD-entries there to be playable on browser for easy access.

My LD45 COMPO-entry Tabula Rasa is already up there if someone wants to revisit it.

After the Lowrez-endeavour I feel a bit exhausted, so it remains to be seen if I have the time and energy to participate in LD47.

Until then!

Hello my dear friends. Since the latest LudumDare session, I continue to develop my entry which was named Keep The Faith. Now it became a full new game with another gameplay and other features. If you like puzzle games, I guess that you could like it. Take a look at Artefaktum on Itch.io

Artefaktum02.jpg

Artefaktum is a puzzle game with cubes and colored tiles. You have to find the right movements/path in order to reach the goal. This project is under development, but you have in this first release all the mechanics which Artefaktum uses. Controls and gameplay are easy to use, but hard to master.

For those who develop games under Unity, this game does not use any light, texture, rigidbody, raycast or collider - all physics are generated by code and all levels are created procedurally (also the hive behind). The main aesthetic uses an unique material shader which has been inspired by Monument Valley and Manifold Garden games. Playing in inspector, you have more or less 20/30 drawcalls - no more...

Now I need some feedback please. Thank you. See you later ++

Advice from a LDJam veteran

This will be my 8th time participating. I've decided to offer advice on some things I learned the hard way. For this post I'll focus on stuff to consider before the jam even starts. Anyone can feel free to chime in with advice or questions:

Get a head start: But isn’t that against the rules? No, actually (at least not for the Compo). The rules state that you’re allowed to start with any base-code you may have. At the very least, create your profile on LDJam.com and a placeholder for your project on itch.io (or wherever you’ll share it), so you’re not rushing at the end. Basic reusable mechanics (ie a platform character controller) are fair game. I also like to prep some quality-of-life stuff like a pause menu, blank title screen, and quit button.

Avoid too many cooks: I've worked solo, with a partner, and with teams of 3-7 people. Small teams with segregated responsibilities are okay, but too many people tend to just get in each other's ways.

Start brainstorming: We don't know the theme yet, but voting has started. Copy the possible themes to a text file and start typing up ideas of games you'd make for each of them. You might find the same idea works with multiple themes, will little to no tweaking.

Scope your projects accordingly: I've had to bail on a couple jams, because I bit off more than I can chew. My new rule of thumb is to plan a game that will take 1/3 the time I have allotted. I figure I'll hit unexpected snags that will make it take twice as long, and the extra 1/3 of the time is great for bug fixes and polish.

Consider quick and easy games: There's thousands of submissions and you'll be lucky if anyone plays your game more than a minute or two, so make that as impactful as possible. They should be able to experience the entire game, so make the controls and mechanics as simple as possible.

Be healthy: Don't plan to stay up the whole time, and live off junk food. Treat it like an ideal work day. Eat healthy, get rest. Neither you or your game will benefit from burning yourself out.

Finally done

Music Composing for a Jam

Introduction

Compositing a music for a Jam is not the same as compositing music when you have more than 72 hours.

That's why they are some technics and tips to produce a music in a short time.

Who I am ?

I am phd student in computer science but I love composing music in my free times. I have already composed music to @pndaa before the LD-47 Jam. Stand On Dignity Good Fighter Lost Goblins

And I composed a music for the game Lost Woods. Take a look and don't forget to rate and comment :)

To conclude, I am not a professional musician and my blog is for intermediate music compositer.

Tools

You could use the tool you want. But train you before the Jam of course. It could be a bit complicated to use interface.

Some tools free or not :

  • LMMS(free)
  • FL Studio (prices)
  • Reaper (free or prices)
  • LogicPro (prices)
  • Protools (prices), ...

Personally, I use Reaper for more complex piece of music.

I recommend to take time to choose virtual instrument (vst, aax,etc,...) and test it. A lot of them are free. free vst

For free orchestral instruments I recommend : vsco-community or virtual playing orchestra.

You can buy vst if you prefere of course...

To Start

You should take a paper and a pen and write the emotion of the music and context.

For our game, Lost Woods : Because the story of the game is a little boy lost in the forest stuck in a time loop. He must find a way to break the loop but the forest is little scary for a child. 37648.png

  • I want a music that sound like "smooth" or dreamy. Because, the hero is a child.
  • I want a music that sound a little scary. Not to much.
  • I want a time sound. For the time loop counter...

After that, you could choose the kind of instrument. Because it's fantasy I prefer to use orchestral instruments (classic but efficient).

A select of small set of instrument :

  • Violin Solo : For the melody. It's cliché but efficient. You don't compose a masterpiece, for this, you need more time.
  • Violons : To repeat the melody but with more "space".
  • Piano : Piano is a good choice for smooth and dreamy music.
  • Harp : For me harp is a great instrument and he is associate with forest.
  • Sound of mechanic toy : It's to remind the child. But, because of scary movies, it's sound a little creepy. I used it like a percussion.
  • Sounf of clock : Just for the time loop counter. It gives an other ambiance. I have used it like a percussion too.

Now with the feeling of the music and the list of instruments, you could start to produce music.

Writing Music

Usually we start producing music by writing melody and make harmonization. Personnaly I use this method now because I am more familiar with it.

But it's a quite technical if you don't know music theory very well. And it could slowdown the process...

That's why, I advice you a different process...

Pattern : it's a small part of your composition with only music notes. You can duplicate it on the global music.

  1. You should compose the accompaniment. (create pattern and duplicate it to create the base)
  2. Compose the melody
  3. Use the melody on different instruments
  4. Create variations when you duplicate a pattern
  5. Compose the rythm.

So, this process is not the only one and it's not the best. But it's efficient in term of times and results. A beginner or intermediate can use this method easily. Good enough for a LD Jam.

Conclusion

Music composition is not easy. But you can follow this method and try. Experiences give you a better result. Don't be afraid to compose. :)

I hope this article will help you ! If you want more articles or videos on the subject (composing music for jam),talk to me in comments :)

Let's add more juice!

So they say a game is really fun to play if juicy enough, so in the post-jam version you can drink a lot of it!

Ludum Dare Team-up

I'm looking to join on a team for the upcoming Ludum Dare. I've got a history of writing experience, including some on an upcoming game (you can see that all on my profile.)

This is what i've done so far...

Music & SFX composer looking for pixel artist/developer/team to collaborate with

Greetings! I am a DJ, music producer and composer who’s worked in film, advertising, documentaries, and game audio/development. My work has been featured by NPR, Huffington Post, MTV, Grammy Association, Google, Apple and more.

I am looking for a 2D pixel artist/team to collaborate with. I have done lots of LDs and game jams in the past but most have been 3D games and I would like to start including more retro-inspired examples in my portfolio. I am also learning pixel art myself so would love to collaborate with someone/team who has experience in this style and maybe pick up some things along the way.

How to delete unfinished projects and old posts?

I jumped the gun in making a game for an old ld jam but didn't finish making it completely. I also have old posts that talk about those ideas. They are cluttering my project view which I only want to show finshed games. How do I go about deleting them? The unfinished button doesn't do anything

Good News, Everyone!

First time in our not-so-long jam history, we have actually made a post-jam version of our game. And we're quite happy with how it turned out. There are no world-shattering changes, just improvements and fun additions. You can try it out in a web version here.

If you'd like to see/rate our original submission, it can be found in a standard place. Have a great rest of the jam :smiley_cat:
