Accept the challenge. Body Key is a hard difficulty game.

I admit that the controls are hard to understand at first, but a little patience and practice you can correctly use the controls and feel challenged by levels.
This game has twenty levels with a generous tutorial.
Basically you should go to the portal at the end of each room.

Do you have some free time with your significant other over the weekend?

You should take a look at Ejderhalar, a board game that I’ve designed for Ludum Dare 35.

You can make your own copy with some paper and a couple of pencils, or you can use pieces from other board games or stuff lying around your house.

Rulebook is clearly written and has a lot of examples of possible moves with diagrams. These will help you to understand the game better.

Most of my votes have come from people who were not able to play it, and I don’t have enough feedback to iterate over my design. It’d be lovely if I can get a couple more plays from board game lovers over the weekend. :) Any comments under my game entry will get a play, comment and vote in return.

My top LD35 picks (and my game)!

Given that the end of LD35 is almost upon us, I thought I’d share some of my favourite experiences that I’ve been able to try out.

Why not give a few a try and leave them some feedback?

A Mazeshift Title

A Mazeshift Title
A really clever little puzzle game. Shift the tiles to build a path between entrance and exit. The games difficulty could have been gentler but give the first few levels a try.

SLAM_SHIFT

A tightly controlled arcade game about making it though tough corridors transforming between two forms as you go. The fact that one form gives you direct control and the other leaves you at the mercy of gravity makes for some close calls!

Light Shifter Temple

Can you make it out of the dungeon alive? This tough dungeon game requires you to get out of the exit but some traps can only be revealed by the light you carry. Be careful though, as soon as it touches an enemy then you alert them to your presence!

Do Robots Dream About Yoga?

It’s a game of hole in the wall where you have very loose control over your character. Need I go on? It’s pretty funny especially when you fail!

My game: Figment

You control a girl who’s been transported to a dreamland by a mysterious totem. What is this box creature trying to tell you? Navigate through eight levels shifting between the real world and dream world. I highly encourage you make it through to the ending.

Lots of different characters!

001

When working on The Wewelsburg Experiment we knew one of the most important things for the game to be fun would be to have a ton of different characters. We even made some that didn’t make it to the final game (gamejams are like this I guess) and you can even find some graphics in the game folder that were not included.

Anyhow, we got to make a quite a few, and I was wondering… did you manage to play with all of them? :)

My first Ludum Dare (a postmortem)

I first signed up for LD something like a decade ago but this is the first time I actually made the time to finish a game. I’m pretty happy with what I turned out, but I thought I should make some notes for the inevitable second attempt …

Time-management-wise I was happy that I found enough time to finish a game without it utterly consuming my weekend. I think I may have sunk a bit too much time into playing around with the game-in-development when I could have been adding to it – certainly the timelapses I’ve watched don’t seem to involve as much, let’s say, “testing” as I did. The one regret is I didn’t have time to add audio. I know that I could have thrown some appropriate sound effects together fairly quickly using sfxr or one of its variants, but I basically had no plan for creating music. That’s something to figure out in advance of next time.

Also on the topic of knowing my tools, Game Maker was pretty quick for throwing together something that got sprites onto the screen, and some of the things that bug me about it (like not being able to create functions with named arguments) were a lot easier to ignore when I knew the limited scope of the project. I spent quite a while during the compo figuring out how the tile and particle systems worked, though, which I could have done in advance. I think the game probably still contains a particle type called SMOKE_LEFT which actually goes to the right, and vice versa.

I think I made a sensible choice in the game idea since it was easy to get the bare bones working but had a lot of scope for adding stuff. I might have been a bit laissez-faire about this, though; I had key content such as tiles missing until late Sunday evening because I figured “there’s time to get that done, putting a dragon in it is more important”. (Anyone who looks at the project file will notice how chaotic the tile palette is, which is the result of figuring I wouldn’t need most of the possible configurations and only drawing the ones I needed when I needed them.)

As far as gameplay goes, I think it’s fun, but having not played a lot of LD games previously there’s definitely more of a trend in the more polished games towards ones that can be finished in some sense. I went for a score-attack based game because I figured that with limited time to create content, it’s easier to produce more fun for the player if the challenge is repeatable. Having watched a couple of streamers play my game, though, I suspect some people were disappointed by the lack of a “you win, stop playing and rate it now” point. If I do an updated version (hopefully!) I’ll add a medal system giving you various scores to aim for, and maybe a gallery showing how many of the possible forms you’ve seen.

I think I also needed to telegraph the objectives a bit better. When I was picturing the game initially, I intended there to be a big arrow on the screen at all times pointing you in the direction of the Power Matrix. In the end I didn’t add the arrow because I wasn’t having trouble finding it anyway, but that’s probably because of knowing the map a lot better than most players. As a result I think some people were confused that they didn’t get any points for killing enemies, because the main objective of tracking down the matrix in order to transform wasn’t flagged clearly enough.

Oh, and the platform physics are too slippery. No idea how I didn’t realise this while testing but the tank in particular is way too hard to bring to a stop. Fortunately, the player can fly a lot of the time anyway.

Anyway, it’s been great fun, and I’ve enjoyed playing and rating the other games in the compo too. Now to wait (with a little trepidation) to find out how I scored …

Patch 1.0 for L.I.G.H.T. Released!

The Update

I haven’t been working that much this week, the normal development cycle should continue in a couple weeks. I’m going to try to release an update every week, even if Its just small things. This update packs a lot of stuff, but most of it isn’t available to play. The Guardian Mode update may come in a couple weeks. If you’ve played Mann vs Machine in TF2 before, its going to be a lot like that. However, I’m trying to make it so that placement is important, as if it was just an onslaught of robots only the tiger mode could be used. I am considering making enemies hurt more, and nerfing regen so you are forced to switch modes frequently. I forgot to make some of the UI larger this week, thats for next. See the full changelog here: http://pastebin.com/i9mm9UgE

I’ve changed the tree textures to not look disgustingly ghastly. They look rather OK now. In the normal world mode, I’ve also added trees everywhere.

However, this week I released a completely revamped tutorial, much better than before. It teaches the player well, and introduces the forms nicely. Also, a new Music track has been added for the tutorial and (later) main menu. My good friend is making the songs for me, and he is still making more. Have a look at the tutorial here:

Preview 2Preview1

It goes on and on about the things ect. I fixed some more bugs/colliders, but its not too noticeable.

About Guardian Mode

As said before, its alot like MvM. There is currency called Quipz. Perhaps I’ll make it so only some forms can get money? Quipz are used for upgrades like extra regen, health, ect. So far I have made textures/prefabs for 3 robot enemies, the

Scout – Fast movement, low melee attack

Bruiser – Swings a heavy lightsaber that is slow, but does tons of damage

Melee – Just the normal melee fighter

I am planning to add another ranged one, perhaps a robot archer of some sort. Maybe a walker bot? I’ve been working on my pixel art and I might redo all the terrain textures.

Try it out

If you haven’t yet tried out my game you can try it here.

Another post about bugs (couse probably 90% of our code in first version of the game produced them)

So we really like bugs, and in first version (which we uploaded literally in the last minute) of our game we had lots of em. We fixed them later, but i think it its a rather sad, that in the process we lost some of our best masterpieces. Just look at them.

Here protagonist gets cought by the police but continues to make death animation without stopping, looks like he is doing squats. Well, isnt it a thing you would do in such situation?

Roofs are slippery in The City (they are not, in fact, but bug think otherwise).

Check our game here and help us find a survived bugs (if you can).

P.S: bonus from a previous post: music from our game (some you cant hear in jam version of the game, so its kinda exclusive)

Cat shift: Post mortem

Hi all,

My second LD entry (Catshift) has been upgraded. If you tried my weird catshifting game with horrible music, you will be happy, because the game didn’t get new background music, but it contains new barrier(gap), new event (mouse arena) and new weird arts(gap, mouse). :) I hope you will enjoy it :)

Thank you all the 48 ratings :)

Doodle Book Survival — Post-Mortem

LD35 Post-Mortem: Doodle Book Survival

allScreens
Ludum Dare 35 was my fourth Ludum Dare, and third successful one. I’ve been super busy since the compo and haven’t had as much time to play and rate games as I would like, but I wanted to put up this post-mortem to jot down my thoughts on another great 48 hours.

Doodle Book Survival is a classic survival game in which you have to stop oncoming waves of enemies by shooting them. To hit different enemies, you need to transform between three different characters. The entire thing is set within the pages of a distracted student’s notebook, and it gets hard, fast. I was inspired in large part by a classic Flash game I love, Zombie Mayhem.

I used Unity as my engine, wrote in C#, animated in Flash, did visual polish in Photoshop, captured sound effects from BFXR, and generated music through FakeMusicGenerator.

What Went Well

With the theme being Shapeshift, I decided early on to focus on animation. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, since I actually got into game making through Flash animation, but in previous LDs I focused more on mechanics and story and left the art til the end. This time, though, I started with the idea of hand-animating transformations, and I’m very happy with the result!

doodle

Shapeshift!

I did the animation in Flash, making the in-between frames by hand to transition between the three different player states. To import into Unity, I copied each frame of the animation and pasted them in a new document, but spread out in a sprite sheet that Unity can read. I included the sprite sheets here, since I think it makes a good case for the quality you can get out of animation when you do things manually. It takes time, but it gives the animation some nice originality that you don’t get from tweening.

transform1

Gremlin (?) to human

transform2

Human to giraffe

transform3

Giraffe to gremlin (?)

I was also pretty happy with the overall structure of my game. Although its simplistic, the conceit of the whole game being doodles in a notebook gave it a nice over-arching consistency. I like when games have menus/UI that tie into the world of the game, so I was happy that I could do that here.

endScreen

The end screen was my personal favorite

A final piece I’m proud of is that the game works. It was actually one of the easier programming experiences I’ve had. So that was nice. And the end result is a game that is definitely playable.

What Went Less-Well

The biggest problem was that my first 12 hours were spent on a different idea. I originally wanted to make a more original game, where you controlled a robot soldier who could transform into a turret, using the robot to attack one set of enemies and the turret to shoot others. I still like the concept. The problems were (1) I was having a hell of a time coding some aspects of it and (2) I discovered I can not draw robots.

So I hit upon a cool idea that I might revisit one day, but that did not help me in the 48 hour compo. After the first night of work, I threw out most of what I had done and simplified. I focused on drawing that I knew I could do and simpler gameplay mechanics. I am happy with the game I launched, but it would’ve been nice to have those extra twelve hours to make the gameplay a bit more interesting and the difficulty curve a bit smoother.

The game is overall very simple. It doesn’t stand out in any real way. The shapeshifting is cool, but it doesn’t do much to change the way the game plays. And it plays like a bog-standard survival game. I’m not going to beat myself up about this too much, because making a game in 48 hours is hard enough without it also having to be unique and original, but in future compos I’m going to try to be more innovative.

The biggest issue that has been called out in the comments on my game is the difficulty, and rightly so. It starts off alright, but then it gets really hard really fast. Like super hard. But over the course of developing and testing I got pretty good at the game, so with classic game-dev blinders I didn’t see that it was an unreasonably sharp curve. This is particularly annoying as a mistake because it would’ve been easy to fix by just tweaking the spawning method, but I didn’t consider it needing fixing because I was looking at the game from my perspective instead of imagining how people who had never played it would experience it. That’s a big no-no, and another thing I will try to fix next time.

Overall, I was very happy with my work in this Ludum Dare. I miss the narrative stuff I did in previous compos, but I like that I could focus more on artwork, and I’m glad to have made it to the finish line with something to show for it.

Looking forward to playing more of your games, now and after the voting ends!

Seeing the difference between the Jam and post-Jam versions is pretty amazing! Most of the problems playtesters had mentioned seemed to be addressed (though it occasionally felt like the mouse was desynching a bit, still), leaving a much more solid and enjoyable game!

Euclid Geomorph – last minute update

To get the game synchronized with the music, I had to work with the three units of time in Unity (frame updates, physics updates and audio playback), which proved to be surprisingly difficult for a simple 2D game. I have now published an update of the game that should work better, so give it a try! Play Euclid Geomorph!

And here’s a gameplay video too, where I fail at the most sneaky part of the game:

QuickShape

QuickShape is my first game I submitted in a somewhat finished state…

Drag and drop the vertices of the polygon to match the given form. You have to think quick, because time is limited. There are three different difficulties from green (easy) to red (hard)

I never used Dart and WebGL before and its a miracle that it turned out so well…

But tell me: What do you think about it?

I really liked your game. I hope you make it to 50! 😀

Last LD 35 Post

I plan to finish up rating when I hit 200 games. I’ve also spent some time planning out the future of my entry. I do not plan to continue the game as it is now, but I am taking the idea of it and turning it into my first real project. I plan to keep the idea the same but am going along the Castlevania genre of 2D action. I’m working on a large world to explore filled with Norse mythology and thrilling boss fights.

I know many liked the animation style and art work in my current entry. If you played it let me know what you think of my planned UI and new player sprite.

NewUI

newSprites

Even without seeing the results I feel I did not do as I had hoped. So, hopefully I can continue to improve and be better prepared for the next compo. My current weakness is audio and experience. I can’t say my audio will improve much, but I plan to be better equipped experience wise for LD36.

Thanks for playing if you did, and if you haven’t and have 5 minutes here is a link.

With just a day (and a bit more!) left, any programmers want to help me hit 100 ratings? And I’ll check out your game if I haven’t already (I’m nearing 200 coolness as well)!

The following is an updated gameplay gif (with a couple of hints!) that represents how most people (including me) play the game! 😛

Few word about my Ludum Dare 35 experience

I participated in this LD edition mostly because i didn’t want to ruin my “LD combo” xD i didn’t have much time to make a game so whole game was made under 6 hours + some time spent on bug fixing. And i didn’t have much time to play other games, so far i only rated 32, usually i easly get to 150+ games rated and i comment about on 70% on them. Anyway im pretty happy with my LD 35 experience and Rambling Pillars. Hopefully i will have more time in next LD event.

Hexshaper Postmortem

Hexshaper gif

Play the LD version of Hexshaper

Ludum Dare 35 is the fourth in the series for the ExcaliburJS team. We piled five to seven people into one room for four days to make another game.

What went well

Workflow and Toolset

We’ve continued to refine and improve the way we build games for jams. It’s important that everything “just works” as much as possible. We maintained the same continuous deployment process that we’ve used before to push to a live site, so it could be tested and played within a minute of being checked in. We also used a watch-and-compile task in Visual Studio Code to gain the same benefit while developing locally.

Art & Sound

Hexshaper art asset samples

We had four people putting together art assets on and off throughout the weekend, and it turned out great. We used bfxr to create the sound effects, and a set of littleBits components to compose the background music. Once we had settled on the theming for the game, everything fell into place.

littleBit setup

Event Scripting

We initially had a grand plan for introducing elements of Hexshaper, and as usual we had to set that aside and come up with a more practical solution that could be completed in the time remaining. We ended up pausing the game and moving the camera over to each portal as it opened and as the player successfully closed it, which ended up providing most of what we wanted.

Bugs

We only encountered a few bugs in Excalibur this time around, and they were all relatively straightforward to test and fix. It feels better to use the engine each time we do a game jam.

What didn’t go so well

Minimum Viable Game

ship

The game on Saturday

We didn’t have a very clear vision of what we wanted the game to be this time around. Uncertainty translated into not really having a playable game until Monday. This delay was a stark departure from the last couple of games we’ve made, where we made a point to have something relatively complete by Saturday evening so we could iterate on it through the rest of the weekend.

Animations

There were a number of things that made interacting with the Excalibur animations API painful. Luckily, we didn’t lose too much time to them, and we now have an opportunity to improve that experience for future users.

Conclusions

  • Build a playable game as soon as possible
  • Look for alternative solutions that create most of what you want for much less work

Special thanks to all of the people who worked hard to make this game possible!

Symblyx — Post-Mortem

24 hours left!  Still time to try out my compo entry, Symblyx:

symblyx_ss1

The Good:

  • MUSIC!  I think this is probably some of my best non-dynamic music I’ve written for LD.
  • The sliding of the rows was something I wanted to get used to doing, since I may need it for future mobile games.  I’m pleased that I managed to get it to work (semi-)flawlessly.
  • Graphics:  They were simple, but they worked.  I also managed to get the still-unnamed character on the side of the board animated pretty well, all things considered.  I also like how the bubbles in the background and the random shapes flashing in the corners looked.

The Bad:

  • There’s a bug in the sliding code that causes some problems for people.  I think I know what’s causing it, but unfortunately I also know that I’d have to completely change the way I did the slide for it to work.  At least most people don’t seem to be having the problem (it’s triggered by low framerates).
  • I wasn’t very clear in the instructions, but you can slide rows and columns by clicking and dragging.  I thought it was intuitive, but in retrospect, it would really only be intuitive on a mobile platform with a touchscreen.  On the computer, I guess there were better ways I could have implemented the sliding.
  • If I had thought of a way I could have made the music dynamic, I would have done it.  I tend to write dynamic music a lot, so this was a change for me to write a simple loop instead.  As I mentioned above, I still really like it; I just felt it could have been even better if there were a dynamic element to it.
  • I spent 27 hours in all on it, and even though there were bugs, I just kind of stopped after that.  There were plenty more things I could have done to spice it up a little bit, such as more animations for the character, more sound effects for clearing shapes, etc.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who played it!

24 hours remain – the last minute plug

We’re almost there! I’ve had some great feedback on my game and played some truly excellent ones – I’m going to do one more push of rating a few games tomorrow, and might write up a short highlighting a few for other folks looking for some more games to round out their Ludum Dare experience.

But in the meantime, I’m almost at 50 ratings for my game and that would be one heck of a good goal to reach, so if you’re looking for something to try, may I recommend Robot Escape?

Changing Hidden in Plain Sight’s title

When I posted up Hidden in Plain Sight in various places, many were quick to identify that another game on Steam with the same title exists. I’ve been mulling over a new title since, and figured I’d see how you, Ludum Dare challengers, think. Currently, I’m planning on renaming the game to, “Through Oneself.” Thoughts?

A name that immediately pops into my head regarding the gameplay mechanic is “Negative Space” or “White Space”. Maybe you could brainstorm from there?

Thanks for playing my game :D

Since the creation part of the jam ended I’ve grown to like my game less and grown less hopeful of my score (I have a feeling a silly bug messed things up a bit). However thanks to all those that took the time to play my game and leave a comment, its a simple little thing but it means a lot.
Hopefully I’ll finish a mobile port soon when I have less on my plate as that is where I think the game would best fit.

Thanks, it was a fun experience. Your game isn’t too shabby either 😀

Thanks for the Figment feedback!

Thank you to everyone that has voted on our game. We’ve already received over 70 votes and 39 comments but could always do with more!

As a team we’ve been blown away by what you’ve been saying and we’re thinking about taking the concept further. If you have any feedback then we’d love to hear you by heading on over to our game and rate it or, if you’ve already played it, why not reply to this post.

Didn’t have much time to play as much as I wanted…

But, as long as “real life work” and my “really stressful and annoying dear clients” allow me to, I’m trying to play most games I can and write something on each play, as giving and receiving the feedback is the best part of LD (keeping in touch is always a great thing too! :D).

Will try to write some proper post-mortem for this last jam, had just a little time to build the project, but I’m happy with the outcome and the feedback I’ve received from players and jammers.

Thanks to everyone who played my game! :)

Thanks everyone for this LD! 😀

Now, time to ask the Rescue Chicken for some gems in here! There are some really good games in there, like OMFG Shapes! (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-35/?action=preview&uid=65932), go there and play, NOW! :3

LD35 Thoughts and Trailer

Hey Everyone!

First off, playing all these little innovative games was amazing! It’s always inspirational to see so many different explorations of the same theme, some games used concepts or elements I would never have imagined, Under The Tree, Die Verwandlung, motion: aAltered Beard, Mountain, Disarranged and Silver Bullet were some of my favorites. Sadly, many others stuck with morphing the player to fit through a specific location, but even a few of those were quite interesting (Block 1).

As it turned out, Shapeshifting as a theme was a rather challenging one. The question is always what to shapeshift, the player? the enemies? the world? an idea? perhaps a story? the game itself? or something else? I have seen stunning examples for all of these and I believe, now it’s time for some advertisement.

In our game, Goons shapeshifting is your weapon! Well…your primary weapon.

Here is a teaser about what the game can do, we would love to get a few more reviews and thoughts before the jam ends:
Have fun!

Excited about the results tomorrow!

Square Peg Round Hole

Game

*****************

THE POST MORTEM:

What went well:

  • I finished a game! After 3 previously failed Ludum Dare attempts, I finally made something that can be considered a complete game in 48 hours. I had only submitted once before, and that was a terribly unfinished game for LD32, so to finally have something to submit that I’m actually quite pleased with is a wonderful accomplishment, and a win in itself.
  • Time management. I was able to follow my plan and have a working skeleton of a game after day 1. This was my plan, so I could spend day 2 adding some flair to the game – sounds, particle effects and a few more features that would make the game better.
  • Kept things simple. I didn’t try to do too much. The idea I came up with was a rather simple one, and this meant I was able to focus more on gameplay than just trying to make everything work. I also kept the graphical assets to a bare minimum, considering I genuinely stink at making graphics.

What I need to improve:

  • The tutorial I made for the game was/is a mess. I think I confuse people more than I help them understand the game. Being tired and worried people wouldn’t understand I tried too hard to explain everything in large blocks of text. Don’t do that again!
  • Sleep. Well, I haven’t slept well in years… suffering from insomnia, so being excited about the upcoming Ludum Dare didn’t make things better. I had really wanted to get some Z’s taken care of before it started, but it was not to be. Still, I fought through it and actually managed to stay relatively focused.
  • There were a couple of sloppy bugs when I submitted. Again, lack of sleep is the culprit. I had turned off checks for playtesting purposes, and forgot to turn them back on before I submitted, and I had missed a couple of variable changes on the colors, which meant you couldn’t play the color cards on the correct colors after shapeshifting. Couldn’t leave it like that, so I had to update at least the web version.

Square Peg Round Hole – Plans:

I will do a couple of additions to the game after the results are in. I want to add a High Score to the game, as well as do some balancing. There’s a little too much luck involved, rather than strategy.

My plan is to make it so it is more likely that you get the more useful cards (those that can be played on any peg, or at least those that only require a specific color or shape). The cards that require both a specific shape and color are way too prominent, and very hard to get an opportunity to play. I may also make it so that cards can be played on the blocks as well as the pegs, which gives you more opportunities to change things up. I’ll have to see where the balance ends up… because the game still needs to be challenging. What I want is for the player to feel like they have options, though, at all times. No more half-heartedly waiting for the timer to run out and take the hit – hoping that the new batch of pegs will match what you need.

Also – I need to do something about that awful tutorial!

After that, I believe this will be the end of this game. It will remain on itch.io as a free-to-play game. I doubt that there’s a market for sales for this type of game. It is more the kind of game that you can play when you got 15 minutes to kill before you go somewhere, or something. I have considered a mobile version of it, and there might be a small market for sales there… but would also require more work to make it compatible.

End Notes:

I am very pleased with the whole experience so far this Ludum Dare. I’m learning a lot, and I’m getting invaluable experience. I can’t wait for the next one, and hopefully I’ll be able to make an even better game next time.

Thank You to all who have commented and given constructive criticism on my game. I am one of those who genuinely appreciate it when you do. If you don’t like something, please let me know – but make sure you explain WHY you don’t like it, and HOW you think it could’ve been improved. Some things come down to personal taste, while other things are just plain ol’ right or wrong. I learned my mistake about the tutorial from the comments. Many have been confused as they start playing, but seem to generally like it when they start to understand what they are doing. That right there – that’s a situation where I was unquestionably in the wrong at how I did the tutorial. Lesson learned!

Keep voting! Keep playing!

…and most of all – Keep Having FUN!

97 votes!!!

Only few hours to end the voting round and finally managed to achieve just 200 votes but Liborio only gets 97 votes. Help us to reach 100!. 😀

We have tested 400 games, here are our favorites !

It was our first Ludum Dare and it was a pleasure from the very beginning.

It’s great to see such a lifely community, so many creatives people !

We have spent a lot of time to test games, and i’ve to say that browsers games are a bless for this kind of event !

Some time it was really complex to download the game or install it, install additional strange library  to be able to run it… and when finaly it crash after 30 sec in the game it’s hard to really enjoy the experience….

On 400 games that we have tested it was really hard to make a choice, and because we are a team it was even harder !

There are so many different style of games, graphics and mood… Many finish or almost finish games, some absolutely not but with great mechanics, graphics or music… It’s truly amazing

We had a lot of disussions about why “this” is a genius gameplay, or “this” is a crappy  design…. eachone defending his champion ^^

Finaly we agreed on a top 3.

1st : Shapeshifter Biker

This one is just truly great on every points. Very tatsy graphics with great simple but very polished style and well working 3D even in browser mode or small configs. The music is perfect (just should not restart every time you die). I cant take it out of my mind, singing it in the morning or in the street ^^ The gameplay is also very tight and after a few minutes of practice  the game is pure pleasure. Crusin’ in the desert on our lowrider is really smooth and get ride of the ennemies dodging a rock at the last moment become so natural and tricky.

The shapeshifting in diferent animals form is also very funny and clever. It offers many variations on the gameplay. The eagle stay my favorite :)

You can really feel a real achievement playing this one and we really hope it will turn on a “real” game with a little more graphics environements and musics.

It’s the freshest thing we have tasted since a long time !

2nd : Splitter Critters

This is the greatest gameplay and innovation that we have tested in this Jam. It’s a great puzzle game with clever and full working mechanics. It fits absolutely to the theme and the graphics are such lovely. Very clean work, except for the backgrounds with this strange anti-analiasing on big pixels effect….

Everything make you feel like it’s a finshed game, great graphics, nice music, many levels and this amazing and perfectly polished idea of gameplay.

If you want to support them, its already on greenlight and we think it will be a great sucess on android and ios too !

We wish them all the good that they diserve!

3rd : It got Paul !

This one is less polished than the two first places or than many games in the jam but it offers you one of the greatest experience !

In our team we are all quiet big fans of the Carpenter’s movie “The Thing”. And this game is the dream game of this movie !

The gameplay is very simple and work perfectly, same for the pixel art and music, very minimal but 100% working. The mood is dark as hell. If you enjoyed splinter cell or metalgear solid… forget it, you wanna be this black hungry shadow !

The Ai should be a little more complex to make the game replayable to infinity.

Great, Great , Super, Good Game !

Here are some other good games :

Do-od is a great casual game with a super concept, plenty of levels and really great graphics. A must play !

Pluto’s Tears is an astonishing polished game with wonderful graphics and a perfect mood.

Werewolf Airline Simulator is game about a stewardess shapeshifting into a Were”animals”. Great graphics and music. Even if its not the same thing the game make me think to Theme hospital. Really funny one!

…”Zen and the Art of Transhumanism is a cyberpunk pottery game about improving the human race through technology.”… couldnt say this better ^^ behind this awesome teasing concept,  there is a really polished game with a very rare level of pixel art (probably the best of the jam) and a great ambiance. It takes a a few minutes to  get into it but it really deserves it !

Porknight is a nice game where you have to defend your king, there is no great innovation in this one and it is too short but the graphics are made in a wonderful style and its pretty fun to play.

Flesh Mess is a great Run’n’Gun game , very similar to our game on many points :) . The graphics style is ill and the game is really responsive. If you like to shoot this is a must play.

Blob Tales is a very nice ” lemmings-like “. The graphics are really a good and this is plenty of good ideas.

Muoto the Geometry Wizard is a great dungeon shooter where you have to kill constant shapeshifting ennemies with your shapeshifting magic . The pixel art is great and after a few fights everything become intuitive. It’s also quiet hard and offers  a nice challenge.

Look at your Feet is this kind of game wich use simple mechanics and beautifull pixel art to make you live a story that you didnt except… The work of this guys is great, you should definitly check their others games .

SLAHP is a platformer game with a great atmosphere and unique chillout rythm. You should give a try to experience the nice art style of this eye shaped planet. It quiet funny and addictiv.

Aftertile is the CGA game you have dream to pocess when you were a kid. The minimal graphics are amazing and the cga colors is perfectly balanced. The level design is good too .

Nyamo’s Adventure is a platformer where you shape shift to find your way in the levels. The graphics are really good aswell as the mechanics that shapeshifting involve.

there is a lot more of good games. we will be back for a second round 😉

otherwise,we have commented every games that we have tested and rated, some comments are more complet and contrutiv than others so if we have tested your game you should know what we think of it :)

HeartLamp’s Top Lists.

Cool Concept (not in order)

Paperchase:   For best excuse for main character to shapeshift/character design.

Rain contact:   OH FUCK this idea is awesome, just… this is awesome– what the fuck is happening? … awesome.

Agent Shift:  Because complicated mechanics and a high concept are awesome sometimes.

Duality: When I first realized what was going on I was like OH SHIT! That’s pretty cool. A more viable Fez-ish mechanic for side-scrollers and platformers.

Friendshift Madness: I think this game might be art.

Shāp SHift: Coming in 2016 to treat people with OCD.

Best Execution/Our Top 5 (in order.)

5. Sub-Dragon     Great.

Sub Dragon.

4. Theseus            Most fun puzzles.

3. Subject 26         Best atmosphere to mechanics relationship.

1/2. Biological Warfare   Best iteration of a concept of ppl were trying this LD. Just nailed it in the ‘theme’ category.

1/2. WindowFrame.     Just awesome.

(Granted we only got to play like around 4% of total entries… but of the ones we played these were awesome. Thanks for playing and making!)

StoopidRobats needs some feedback!

Play, rate and comment here! (HTML5): Click!

I started to remake Stoopid Robats! in Unity (LDJAM version was in Gamemaker), and I need some more feedback for this.

It would be great if you could play the HTML5 version up here, leave a comment and a rating and tell me what you would like to see in the new, proper version.

Planned are:

  • A quick tutorial
  • Easy indicators what shapes to shift in to pass barriers
  • More powerups/interesting pickups
  • More cool cyberpunk-y effects

This is a gif from the basics (minus shapeshifting) running in Unity

View post on imgur.com

Getting some more input (and ratings, not many yet) would be great and really appreciated because I would like to work some more on the idea and user input goes a long way when improving the game.

The Unity version will feature dynamic lights and 3D platforms and pickups/powerups among other things. (The eyes illuminate the platforms, this is already set up in the gif above but barely visible due to some recent changes. It looks quite nice once everything is fine tuned)

Thanks!

Shape Escape Level Editor

Update after another few days of hard work!

We just finished a (somewhat) working level editor for Shape Escape.

Try it out here: WIN/UNITY Standalone/DROPBOX

It doesn’t have all of the features used to create the original game, but it should work well enough despite all of the bugs. Plus you can save and share your created levels, although only by manual uploading at this point.

Thanks for everything!

With the voting round coming to and end in a few hours, I would like to take a moment and thank everyone who took part in LD35 and brought more games to the world. This was my first Ludum Dare, and I was surprised by how exciting an experience it was. There are things I now wish I had done differently, but it was a great learning experience and overall I am satisfied by the result. I had lots of fun playing as many of your games as I could, and many times I was pleasantly surprised by your innovation and the amount of polish in them, considering the time limitation.

I would like to send my extra special thanks to everyone who took the time to play, rate and comment on my game (Go Away, Zeus!). If I haven’t played your game already, comment it here, I’ll try to play as many games as possible until the time’s up.

5 votes to go

Hey, everyone.

So todays is a last day and we still dont have enough votes to get to 17 votes, and this makes us really sad developers. And we dont want to be sad developers, so please play our game and vote for it. And if you leave a comment under our entry we will play and rate your game too, as a gratitude.

Anyway, we wanna say that Ludum Dare was a really great experience, thanks to everyone who played our game and to the guys who even made ludum dare possible. We really hope that we will participate in the future jams.

Virgin Blood – Post Mortem

count_suckula

Hey everyone, this is my post-mortem, for the entry which I dubbed ‘Virgin Blood’, a game about an aged count who seeks to rejuvenate himself by consuming the blood of a fair maiden: the castle princess.

Lucky for him, the princess is spending the afternoon in the castle gardens.

Unlucky for him, his fatigue makes him unable to fly high enough to avoid guards and get straight to her, being forced to make his way through the garden labyrinth.

And may I say, I finally got to achieve something important in this LD – enough gameplay to call it a game.

showoff2showoff3

So here are some things worth mentioning about its development:

WHAT WENT RIGHT:

– it helped A LOT to use software like MagicaVoxel for content creation, although you should always squint an eye on the stats/profiler. I had some trouble with poly count, before ending up simplifying things, so that the game has a proper framerate even on webgl builds.

– it helped A LOT to plan level design in a way that progressively helps the player understand the game. Very few people complained about not knowing what to do in the game. Although I do regret I had no time left to scatter the instructions themselves across the levels.

– it helped A LOT to sleep well. And although this is the compo I worked on the LEAST (around 12 hours or so) , it feels as if I’ve done the MOST so far.

– I made a really good choice combining twitch elements and move planning

WHAT WENT WRONG:

– it would have helped A LOT to spend at least 15-30 minutes for the audio. no loop, no sfx for this entry, which is sad :(

– it would have helped A LOT to spend more time fixing bugs after the submission. I only fixed the critical ones. But as it turns out, a glitch that had no actual implications except for aesthetically looking odd, made players think some of their fails were caused by it. I’m talking about the feeding animation. Should’ve fixed it from the start.

– I made a really poor choice combining tile-based character movement and keyboard input. I could have probably changed that in time but I was so caught up with what I was working on, that I dismissed the issue. And a bit lazy.

showoff4showoff5

These being said, cheers and congrats to everyone!

And don’t forget to play and rate the game if you haven’t already. I’ll be dedicating these last hours doing the same for you :)

Steam Punk Puzzle Game future and thank’s commentary

Hello everyone,

Fist of all, thank you for all the votes, i get a lot of critical reviews and that’ll help the future of the game. So let’s talk gameplay’s mechanic and controls, the 2 major defaults of the game.

Capture

  • 1st of all, i can’t change the character head’s mouvement. It’s a prefab made by unity on all the unity version, maybe if i modify the code, that’ll make the character easier to play.
  • Yes, i promise, the commands will be based on qwerty and easier of English player :p
  • (These screenshot are only for testing the mechanic of gameplay. Graphics are going surely to change)
  • Now you’ll have 1 cube blue. When you’ll click on one of his face, a new block will be created next to this face and the previously bloc gonna be red. You will get the possibilty to put a precise number of bloc depending of the level.

  • There is still a mechanic if you don’t want to do only one lines. If you do a right on a cube, all blocs next to this bloc gonna be blue and the bloc will dissapear. It mean that you’ll get the possibility to do not only 1 line. This action is possible 2 times.

  • And you get the possibility to move the camera arround the cube.
  • Surely, new mechanics gonna be added in the future, to don’t make the pleayer bored 😉

LD#35 is ending and it was a blast, even though I had so little time to develop the game. It was a blast, as always.

I wanted to play more games, but work happens :/…but I’ll keep playing the games! 😀

This one’s here is a video compiling some of the binaries I tested during the development of my game, using CT Fusion. Thanks to that, it was really quick to build this prototype. 😛

Thanks to everyone who commented and rated my LD#35 entry or those who just played the game!

Cheers! 😉

Thanks for all the Votes

So far I’ve managed to receive 84 votes, and some really great comments. There are still a few hours left, so why not give a bullet hell a try?

Fixing bugs is allowed, I think adding in visual feedback is technically breaking the rules as its an added feature, not a fix. I didn’t see multiple versions to play either for submission and post-compo.

This is the end – beautiful friend :)

Hi folks. Soon we get results about what we have done during these last three weeks. Don’t forget that the most important is sharing – not the first places. I thank you for your feedback and rates (77). It was just wonderful to participate at the 35th Ludumdare session with you. Now I am continuing the game development, trying to increase its gameplay and aesthetic. Maybe, you have not seen my project among others. However, if you want to try BrainRequired – a 3d puzzle game, take a look on this page. I wish you the best. Have a nice day ++

Last chance: play and Rate Body Key

Accept the challenge. Body Key is a hard difficulty game.

bk2
Within a minimalist environment, change of geometric shape to overcome levels.
Each geometric shape has a specific skill that will help you solve the puzzles.

LD351
I admit that the controls are hard to understand at first, but a little patience and practice you can correctly use the controls and feel challenged by levels.

1

This game has twenty levels with a generous tutorial.
Basically you should go to the portal at the end of each room.

2

Each portal has a geometric shape.
To pass through the portal your body must have the same shape of the portal.
To arrive to the portal, use the skills of each geometric shape that you have.

Tis a slow and painful grind from 40 onwards, no? In the same boat as you, friend.

TVGS Let’s Play Youtube List updated, #4

We have our final update to our always-up-to-date Ludum Dare Let’s Play playlist!

Just a few hours left!

Check out my game! click the image!

With LD35 wrapping up I’ve noticed that amidst all the praise in the comments about my game, very few contain any actual criticism! I know it’s a dumb complaint to have, but it would be great to hear about some more stuff that I can improve for the post mortem version. getting access to a large number of playtesters doesn’t come often and I’m just trying to take advantage of it.

Pathetic Last minute beg to get to 50.

I’ve played about 70 games thanks to my streams, and I haven’t disliked a single one :)

Now I ask for help, in the last few moments before the end, to give my game a very quick play. It takes only a minute to get the gist of it, and to help get me to 50 votes, since after you reach 40, it’s a slow, agonising progress. I have had seven more since then, yet I reached 40 two weeks ago.
[If you do have the time, I implore you to check it out here!]

Thanks, regardless :)

Could not be happier

I honestly was a little depressed about the game. I thought it was terrible and the idea was unclear. Apparently that is not the case!! The results came in, and I did better than I could have ever imagined. Thank’s to everyone who rated by game, you are amazing!

(post-mortem) Some stuff about the mistakes and stuff I made or something

cover

So I made this game, ShmupShifter.

It was really complicated compared to what I’ve done for the compo in the past, so there were a few odd choices, and in addition to that some elements of the game are only useful very late in the game.

Consider this a postmortem. Maybe.

The Inspiration

I was inspired to make this mechanic by Radiant Silvergun.  I, lacking an Xbox 360 or Sega Saturn (and 700 bucks), have never played the game, but it seems awesome so whatever. Have some gameplay:

You have access to seven weapons which you can change to at any time. I thought the gameplay possibilities from this would be excellent, and in addition it fit the theme well.

The Main Mechanic

The shape-shifting in the game isn’t necessary in many situations until the second stage, which many players never got too. That’s kind of an issue. In the late game it is essential to use all ships in order to avoid the need to dodge patterns altogether. The ability to move around enemies means that in some cases you never need to come close to bullets, as you can herd them in any direction you want.

A lot of people did not seem to notice the importance of the speed differences of the ships, but when you get better at the game you start thinking about using ships that may not have the best fire for the situation, but that you need to move as accurately or as quickly as you need to.

Play the video to see what I mean with the stage 2-1 boss, which you can dodge above with the fast green ship.

The Purple Ship

One of the three usable ships seemed to be pretty useless to, well, everybody. This ship had:

  • Slow movement
  • Hard to use, weak weapon.

Because people do not see the later moments of the game, both of these traits seem a detriment. The slow movement is actually an essential part of the gameplay later on. When fire become dense, especially in the second loop of the game’s stages, it is almost impossible to weave through with the red or green, fast ships.

The weak fire is designed to prevent players from staying in the purple mode for a long time, as the combination of fine control and normal fire would make it far too powerful in later stages.

Here is an example of using the purple ship to dodge a dense pattern. The second use in the clip is what I’m talking about, when the spread firing enemy comes in from the right. You’ll notice that I die soon after I, in panic of being stuck,  switch to the red ship.

Impossible Patterns

Some people complained about some patterns being impossible. This was, believe it or not, by design. It is always (or at least, 99% of the time) possible to get the upperhand in the situation by exploiting the games mechanics, such as the ability to harmlessly go through enemies, move quickly with the green ship, and fire from all angles. The patterns which may be impossible if you approach them like a typical shmup become easily beatable if you utilize the mechanics.

The Root Cause of the Issues

The biggest issue I had with this game was that I made it for people who were into shmups, not for an average Ludum Dare player. This led me to go way overboard with the difficulty, and make stages ludicrously difficult if you don’t think them through and play repeatedly, which many people wouldn’t. Next time I’ll include a normal mode, which would be easier than this game, and an arcade mode, which would be like this game is.

Here’s just some gameplay starting from the second loop to demonstrate how insane the difficulty can get in this game. (of few of the early deaths are intentional to reduce the difficulty. Or at least that’s what I tell myself :P)

Thanks for reading my needlessly defensive explanations of all of my game’s issues! Remember to try ShmupShifter!
