GRAVITY PLATFORMER! – LET’S DEV #2

Hello there, developers!

In this episode, we’ll be implementing some unique platformer mechanics around gravity.

Enjoy, and don’t forget to leave some feedback!

Mini LD 65: The ugly bunny POST MORTEM

If you haven’t played the game yet try so here ->

This was one of the first times I have used Unity to make a 3d game rather than a 2d game and I am very happy with the result. I had never used Unity Terrain before and I am quite happy with how the map looks. Despite having very limited time with real life commitments and even posting the game a day late O_o, I am very happy with the gameplay and I think most people should be able to have a good 5 minutes of fun.

If you play that game please leave a comment

Thanks in advance Logan

Rookie

First off, sorry to those who I have accidentally wasted their time… Anyways, the title, let’s start from there. It says “Rookie”, as you could guess, I’m totally new to whatever I’m doing.

One day, I was surfing through games on kongregate.com, while coming across a game call “Screaming Cubes”. I kind of liked it. Liked it to a point where I need to know more about the game. Maybe seeing if the developer is going to update it. So, a little time spent after, and found “Shigor’s nest”. I’m not to clear, but I think he’s the developer of the game.

I start applying a comment on how I like it and the developer shouldn’t give up on it. I actually start making more comments about the ga- well… Not all the comments are about the game, but on my fifth comment, I’ve reached to the conclusion that Shigor’s nest is dead… I mean, last update was around 2013. And right now, it’s 2016. So, I was thinking, why put “update the game” in a comment if nobody sees it? So I needed somewhere else to mention this… So, I needed something that, is somehow connected to Shigor’s nest, some site that isn’t exactly dead. So I came across this… “Ludum Dare”. To tell you the truth, I’m not even sure if that’s the site’s name…

Now, I’m not sure if anyone remembers to game or know it at all… Or the fact “Shigor” the developer is even alive.

Jeez, I’m not even sure what posting this will do. I guess, the game just stole an interested from me and I didn’t want to leave the game dead and forgotten… I want to see it rise into a big awesome game. Yeah.

A little refresher before I go.

The game I’m talking about is called:  “Screaming Cubes”

I think the developer is:  “Shigor”

Purpose:  “I want it to be updated somehow”

If anyone does happen to read through this, I’m not sure when I’ll be back to this site to see what’s happening. Could be a day from now, or could be till summer. Sorry if there’s any misspelling words or just bad grammar… Anyways, I guess that’s all for the time being, see ya’.

Flinging Bouncy Balls – And evolution of my LD26 Entry

Hi,

It’s been a while since I was around these parts. I have a love/hate relationship with Ludum Dare, I loved to take part a few times, I would love to keep taking part, I hate the timing, it seems that it always falls on weekends that I am completely busy… an occurrence I wouldn’t mind if my life was so packed full of fun things that it were justified, but it isn’t!

Anyway I am posting here now because I finally did it, I took a Ludum Dare game I made a long time ago, finished it, ported it to android, and have placed it out on the app store, hoping to make £1 and call myself an indie developer.

The game I took was Chroma, a fairly simple game where you rotate the world to guide a ball from its start position to the end position in a maze, the game I finished with is “Flinging Bouncy Balls” and its nothing like Chroma, except you still play with a ball, and you still have to get to the yellow zone while avoiding red zones.

Ludum Dare 26

What happened? Well I started by porting the game to android, well, not simply porting, I actually rebuilt it, the idea was you would rotate the maze using the rotation of the phone, and guess what… it wasn’t very fun! Unless you like a game where you are manically attempting to juggle a tablet while not dropping it.

So I took it back to the drawing board and kept gravity pointing down, instead adding the ability to launch the ball around, the aim was still to get to the yellow zone while avoiding the red zones in randomly generated maps, but without the gravity rotating mechanic, it was a bit dull. So I added lasers, and missiles. And I made the red zones move, and built a whole bunch of levels, the result is something I’m pretty happy with, albeit not what I set out to make, but just goes to show how you need to let ideas evolve to find the fun in a game, and no matter how long it takes, you can actually finish things!

So give it a go, don’t give it a go, tell me what you think, or simply ignore me! Hopefully I’ll be back for the next Ludum Dare!

I think I’ll just ignore you. 😉

Looking for partner(s) for LD35

Ahoy, so I have taken part in the last few Compos and had quite a fun time. However this time I’d like to mix things up by working with some others on the Jam instead. So first let me tell you about me.

Me: Firstly, as I said, I am decently experienced. I have 3 Compos under my belt and while others have a lot more experience in development and/or Ludum Dare, I spent a lot of time on each of them analyzing what went wrong, where to improve and the concepts behind a successful Ludum project. Organizing workflow for LD is a mental exercise I relish in so I take it pretty seriously (spent on average about 36 hours on each Compo.)

Regarding practical skills; I am a bit of a jack of all trades; I have a ton of experience working with Unity, as well as 3d Modeling and Animating, Texture work, sprite work, sound (music and effects) and programming. admittedly my knowledge is a bit lacking when it comes to graphical coding (don’t know many rendering tricks) and I’d say my specialty is probably design.

What I’m looking for: Personally I’d prefer people who are more specialized so that I can work around them to feature their strength(s). If you’re an artist, I’ll do the coding/design/sound, if you’re sound, I’ll do art/code/design, so on so forth. I don’t mind if you are new to Ludum Dare, as I said; coming up with workflow is something I love for Ludum, so teaching it to you is fine by me.

I also recognize that if your specialty is something that won’t take the full time for the project that you won’t spend as much time doing it as I do (IE: if you’re just doing music and sound and knock it out all on Saturday, don’t expect you to stay on beck and call all the way till Monday) but I plan on taking it seriously and would love those who also want to make a quality game despite the short timeline.

If you’re interested in working with me on the next Ludum, just comment below. thanks for your time!

Hey Ilseroth,

Hello! My name is Lucas Trevisan, I’m from Brazil (wow) and I do the second year of computer science here. I make games for fun to about 1.5 years. I began to develop a game engine as my scientific initiation project. I wish I could help (not as part of the team itself, but as a helper. I am very curious to know how other people develop games!) Here in Brazil are few, those who develop games. It is a very difficult market for me here, and would like to learn and observe a little more like you out there, do this. 😀

I made a subreddit (reddit.com/r/gameteam) for just this purpose! It usually picks up traffic a week or two away from LD, so maybe check there.

You don’t need a full version of GameMaker in order to make games. There are a couple free alternatives to it including the free version of it.

Yeah maybe you can just find a different program to use in the meanwhile.

I would really recommend picking a general purpose programming language and a graphics framework and immersing yourself in code for the next 5-ish weeks. No doubt there will be struggles if this is your first time programming but it’s free and in my opinion fun.

Barriers 2

Hi there, I just released a small web game on newgrounds and would really like some feedback. It’s called barriers 2, it’s a singleplayer or multiplayer puzzle game that takes about 20 minutes. I’d really appreciate the feedback you guys could give me. Thanks. (Barriers 2)

Fun game, tried really hard to get less than 7 second lap but it’s surprisingly hard. Would love to see more of it.

Looking for a pixel artist

Hello! I’m a 23 year old game programmer looking for an artist for a mini rpg game! My skillset is primarily C#, Java and Javascript, with Unity, MonoGame and LibGDX under my belt. My professional experience ranges from small to large game development projects as a freelancer.

I am looking for a pixelartist for some hobby development, I would just like to find an artist who would be interested in seeing their art in games, so cooperation would be purely casual and for fun. Of course if our projects actually earns a profit in any way, this profit will be split evenly.

I wont spill too much of it here, if this is something that could possibly interest you just send me a message!

Thanks 😀

What do you need help with?

We are in!

Hey guys!

It’s been a while since we last took part in this competition. We are ready to roll and do our best at game developing.

Our equipment:
Paint.NET
Unity 5.3.1
MS VisualStudio 2015

Best wishes,
Team BSOD

What really annoys me.

What is very annoying for me is, because I live in Australia, Ludum Dare starts 1pm on the Saturday and due to school I can’t compete as I need to be in school. This really sucks but I guess I will just do my own little one the following weekend.

That does suck. But I suppose you could just make a smaller game, or participate in the 72 hour competion. But I guess you could have a small competition with a friend or something (if you have friends who make games of course).

Theme Suggestions for Ludum Dare 35 are open!

themeidea3

Think you have the best Theme idea for Ludum Dare? Tell us what it is.

If you’re new to the ‘New Theme Selection’ process, every user can suggest a maximum of 3 Theme ideas. This goes on for nearly 3 weeks. After that, we sort through the mega-list of themes in something called the Theme Slaughter. Finally, the weekend before Ludum Dare, we kick-off several rounds of Theme Voting, before the Final Round.

The Theme for Ludum Dare 35 will be announced at the start of the event. When is that? Go to the theme website, and it should tell you at the top of the page. Otherwise, check the countdown clock at the top of this page.

I’M IN!

Yo, I’m in again, for my 4th LD! Maybe this time I won’t have a test, or maybe I won’t dream about the announcement. As it’s my tradition, I’ll use a completelly diferent library! This time it is…. LÖVE! I’d use gamemaker, but I ditched windows because microsoft kept deleting my stuff. Oh well, you can’t have everything.

See you in LD!

Checking In

Plan to participate in LD35

Tools:

Unity 5 w/ C#

GIMP

LMMS for audio probably.

Been practicing in unity between the last LD and now. I’m still relatively new to it and game design as a whole (so many genres). The last three LDs I have participated solo. I would be open to working with others this time around since I have a small bit of experience under my belt now.  My programming and design skills are intermediate in some areas and amateur in others. I can do simplistic art and sound and would call those two areas my weak points, specifically sound.

LD Portfolio:

LD32

LD33 Warmup

LD33

LD34

May the Fourth be with me.

I’ll be participating in LD35

Tools:

Unity 5 w/ C#

Inkscape

MuseScore & Audacity

This will be my fourth Ludum Dare after 16-month hiatus. I’ve been practicing with Unity for the past two weeks and will continue doing so until the challenge starts.

I wrote a blog post about this here: http://www.gnerkus.com/2016/03/14/may-the-fourth-be-with-me/

What is Ludum Dare?

Is this just like a monthly game jam? It seems really cool but so far the site is a little hard to navigate. Some tips from people who’ve been here for a while would be super appreciated. 😀

(I can’t find a reply button in the comment section so thank you to the two of you that explained the site! :) )

LD is a game jam that happens three times a year, in April, August (I think?) and December. There are two simultaneous events: the jam (72h, teams) and the compo (48h, solo). As soon as you finish your game, you upload it to the site on the corresponding category. After the timer is out, everybody votes on games and gets ‘coolness’ from it. The more ‘coolness’ you have, the more visibility your game will have. Voting is only allowed to those who have uploaded a game.
