Seriously - as much fun as I would have making a fishing game, I'm certainly not going to have fun playing any more than like 2 of the 3000 fishing games that will be made. Why do people who come up with these themes and then vote on them not understand that they are not the only people who will be making a game for this event and a huge part of what makes Ludum Dare different and the game jam event is how many people actually take the time to play and rate the games. Themes that are too restrictive and result in too many similar games (like fishing) ruin that part of the experience because no one wants to play crappy made in a weekend prototype fishing mini game #2465.

Some themes are not really themes

Final RoundTheme Ideas!

So I decided to make another idea for each of the final round themes! I tried to be a bit more realistic here, though.

Summoning: Cozy game where you summon little demons to help with daily tasks.

It spreads: You're an alien pod people boss and have to manage the invasion: order minions to replace others, you have to separate them and clone them in secret.

Recycle: Collect the healing potions and other consumables left by the adventurers and upcycle them and sell them in your shop.

Tunnels: First person tile-based game where you explore a tunnel network and have to find places that correspond to the overworld above.

Strange machines: Machines litter the landscape, figure out what their parts do and switch them to complete puzzles.

Single use: Action RPG but the weapons break after one hit. However, you auto-equip the next item from the inventory, so inventory management becomes key to survival.

Strength in numbers: Strategy game where you build buildings and the strength value of each building is the combined value of its neigbours. The values can also be negative, or multiplications or divisions. Each new building is chosen for a small randomly selected set.

Fishing: 3rd person arcade action: play as an orca and take down as many fishing boats as you can. The fishers start using increasingly aggressive weapons as the game progresses.

Push your luck: Simple dungeon crawler, room by room. After each encounter, you can decide to either go home or continue onwards. Rewards increase exponentially, but your resources dwindle.

Digging: Graveyard manager, dig graves for recently deceased, but you have to consider how they rise up, zombies and vampires just don't mesh that well.

Cartography: You have a map marked with some hotspots. Explore the locations and choose the correct explanation for the place.

Pick your poison: Very simple roguelite gameplay with short sessions, but before each run you pick an item that has both an upside and a downside. Could be bar-themed.

Decay: The city decays before your eyes. Bridges and walkways disappear. Collect cultural relics before paths to them disappear.

Collapse: 2D platformer where you jump on platform to collapse them on enemies.

Mutation: You're a monster farmer and clients come to you with different requests. Combine random mutations to complete orders.

You don't play as the main character: Escort quest where you are the one being escorted.

Super Drunken Guy - Free Steam Keys for you

Before you get focused on the game jam you might want to chill out with a small round of Super Drunken guy. I released the game on 5th April and i thought about to giveaway some steam keys.

But just as the easiest form - i post the keys and the first you get it activated wins. I hope this is ok for mike.

This btw. is Super Drunken Guy:

Final Round - Theme Ideas!

Observe, as I take this multitude of themes, and transform each into a completely different and fresh concept. This takes years of practice, folks.

Summoning: You summon carrots, with a carrot (it's called magical realism).

It spreads: You're a carrot, and you turn into little baby carrots, until the world is made up of nothing but carrots.

Recycle: You pick up carrots and turn them in for a reward (bigger carrots)

Tunnels: With your trusty carrot you burrow into the NSA and steal their prized surveillance tapes featuring carrots.

Strange machines: The plot of Superman 3, but the machine turns people into carrots.

Single use: Your carrots go away after you use them (kinda ripping off Halo 2 here but whatever).

Strength in numbers: A multitude of carrots is better than carrots of a lesser amount.

Fishing: You lurk internet chat sites posing as a handsome carrot but then it turns out you're actually a 45 year old carrot with back problems.

Push your luck: You keep tagging your friends on CarrotBook with pictures of carrots when you know damn well that they prefer lettuce.

Digging: You uhm...go around asking people if they...dig carrots?

Cartography: You stare at maps and eat carrots. As a mapmaker, eyesight is your livelihood.

Pick your poison: Take the red carrot!

Decay: An emotional character piece involving carrots. You're stuck with your dad on a boat, and he just admitted to you that he's prejudiced against carrots.

Collapse: You collapse under the weight of your own carrot.

Mutation: It's carrot time!

You don’t play as the main character: You play as the main carrot!

My impulse ideas for each possible theme

Not sure I'd actually use any of these, just the first that come to mind: - Summoning : Pokemon battles but with demons - It spreads : Gremlins, or other quickly self-reproducing menace - Recycle : Game with arrows or throwable weapons that can be gathered and used again - Tunnels : F-Zero style racing game through (and sometimes outside of (tunnels) - Strange Machines : probably a simple platformer with weird robot enemies, maybe a sequel to my older game "last bot standing" - Single Use : game with grenades idk - Strength in numbers : A pikmin-style game? - Fishing : Maybe a sequel to my older (crappy) "mrs scubaman" game where scubaman jr goes underwater spearfishing - Push Your Luck : collection of minigames that progressively get harder/faster. you choose when to quit before you lose. - Digging : Dig Dug style game with Grabboids - Cartography : probably some sort of pirate treasure game - Pick your poison : game about pest control - Decay : a game where you're a fly trying to get food without being swat - Collapse : a game about floating islands that eventually fall? - Mutation : some ninja turtle parody, probably. - You don't play as the main character : tower defense, placing minions to defend the villian from the hero

Dev & 2D Artist looking for team.

Hi, I'm Omitsu (30), I'm looking for a team, this will be my second JAM. I'm a Developer, and I also have working experience in gamedev as a 2D artist doing sprite animations for a NSFW game. I'm heavy into japanese games like: Megaman Zero, Gunvolt, Ragnarok Online, Monster Hunter, Harvest Moon, etc.. You can see some SFW drawings in my twitter, not much pixelart stuff. But if you're interested I can show you some of my NSFW work. Some drawings: https://twitter.com/OmitsuDev/media First jam game I did to learn unity: https://omitsu.itch.io/ For that game I did the character design, illustrations, voice, programming, sound effects edit, and I used free game assets from itch. I recently also learned some blender, so I can do basic 3D stuff. I don't have a portfolio yet.

I'm In!

LudumDare is back again! I have a lot of IRL stuff to juggle this time around, so it's going to be another chill-style compo for me. The last time I was in "chill mode" things turned out very well, so hopefully things will go similarly! :) Good luck to all!

Favorite tools list:

Engine

🫘 Construct2: HTML5 game creation software!

Graphics

🫘 Aseprite: Pixel art program!

🫘 GNU-IMP: Open source image editor!

Sound

🫘 LSDJ and bgb: Authentic Gameboy synthesizer and emulator!

🫘 Chiptone: Superb sound effect generator/creator!

🫘 FL Studio: Classic versatile music software!

🫘 Audacity: Open source sound editor!

Hosting

🫘 itch.io: Storefront/games host!

I'm in :)

My first game jam ever was LD49. I went completely solo, using Unity for the first time, and finished my game in 72 hours.

Now I got some teammates from college with me, and doing it with GameMaker because that's what I'm more used to.

Soon we're meeting in call to vote for the themes and do a little pre-brainstorming. Good luck y'all!

Created a public matrix room for the jam

Couldn't find an existing one so tossed one on my server, feel free to hop on. I'm normally on IRC myself but decided to try matrix, was kinda shocked to see there's no ludum dare group yet and honestly very few gamedev public rooms at all.

I'm In

Well, here we go again. Hopefully we can all make something worthwhile.

Tools of the trade:

  • Unreal Engine - game engine; focus on game rather than engine boilerplate.
  • VSCode - code editor; because sometimes that's needed.
  • Blender - 3d editor; because I like 3d.
  • Krita - image editor; because 3d needs 2d.
  • LMMS - music editor; because sound is good.
  • AbundantMusic - music generator; because I'm not a composer.

Good luck!

My third jam!

It's lovely to see people getting set up for LD55 and sharing their workspace, tips and goals. I'm looking forward to riding the high of having a bunch of ideas and the passion to work towards a single goal together with everyone!!

MY GOALS FOR LUDUM DARE 55

  • make a finished game that's fully playable
  • preferably as a jam game, otherwise close to the jam deadline so people have the opportunity to still play my game
  • engage a little more with the community, i. e. join chill streams or whatever opportunity arises
  • write a postmortem (last LD I did write one but felt it was too unpolished/too late to post)
  • mind my physical & mental health! last LD I had a cold & this time around I'm just getting over one so the conditions never seem to be optimal, but I want to work with what I have and make sure I'm setting myself up to not crash after the jam. i.e. go outside, enjoy the sunshine, eat good meals and put aside some time of the day for a lowkey hobby, talking to friends, etc.
  • considering that I failed to familiarize myself with RPG Maker MV enough to feel comfortable using it and did absolutely no prep for this jam (hello fellow procrastinators) I want to keep the scope very small and simple and use whatever tools I'm comfortable with. I see the jam sort of as a sketchbook compared to a completed artwork -- you're free to just try out ideas and see whatever sticks.
  • after pretty bleak spins on the themes for LD53 and LD54 I want to use this Ludum Dare to make a lighthearted and healing sort of experience.
  • lastly, have fun!!!!!

Stuff I'll probably be using:

  • Super Videotome & Brackets as game engine & code editor
  • Clip Studio Paint for art and thumbnail
  • boscaceoil/rFXGen/audacity for audio
  • Obsidian for writing (absolutely not the best tool for this, but I love it and wrote my last game on it too)

My Toolbox

I'm not sure if it's tradition or if it's a humble brag but sure let's list our tools :dvd:

 Code and Engine

  • Engine: Unity - Because I like it and that's OK.
  • Editor: Visual Studio - Because I like it and I really don't want to prove I can do this in nano or vim running on a potato in rural Kazakhstan :flag_kz:

Art and Music

  • 2D: Krita - Because it's lighter on my machine than Photoshop but I might bite the bullet if I need too
  • 3D: Blender - I don't imagine I'll be doing a HUGE amount of 3D
  • Audio: Cubase, because I'm an audio nerd
  • Composing: Guitar Pro 8 because Cubase score editor is horrendous to actual musicians.

Other

  • Trello Because I want to track features and bugs
  • Unity Dev Ops Because, well.. Honestly, it's not bad once you try it. Plus it's already IN your project rather than having to tie GIT to it
  • My little kitty in a box escape key because I want as many opportunities to pet a kitty cat as I can get.

Count me in!

My weapons of choice:

  • Godot 4 - Game Engine
  • Visual Studio Code - Code Editing (Using the godot-tools extension so I don't have to touch Godot's builtin editor)
  • GIMP - Art
  • Audacity - Sound Tweaking
  • LMMS - Music
  • jfxr (jfxr.frozenfractal.com) - Sound Effect generation
  • A french press and some ground coffee

A message from the future...

download (4).png

We all know that it's the same situation every time... so plan ahead and prepare for the worse!

Battle Station and dev tools ready to rock. PS: I really hate scrolling.

  • Editor: Alacritty, TMUX, Emacs + Evil
  • Engine: DragonRuby Game Toolkit
  • Graphics: Procreate, Photoshop, iPad
  • Box: MacBook Pro Max M2
