Another Ludum Dare, Another Game: Mortal Compass

After these 3 days I'm pleased to say that this is probably our best game jam yet, very proud. I learned a lot about Unity and it's nuances and had a lot of fun creating the SFX and music for our survival game: Mortal Compass, would love for you to check it out!

Play Civil Servant, accept forms, or decline them.

Could you think of playing anything more thrilling than as an office clerk accepting , declining and reading forms ?! Y-You can ? Uhh, well why not play the game anyway and see if perhaps you can have fun with the powertrip associated with wielding the almighty stamp of judgement. I mean actually if you think about its, its kind of like a shooter, the stamp is your gun and the forms are the target, yeah. Ok so if you arent into these sorts of games just imagine this is a shooter and play it anyway and practice your form stamping accuracy.

And if you arent a fan of shooters, dont worry its nothing like a shooter (unless you like shooters in which case...)

Ok, I am gonna stop talking now, play the game, rate it and recommend it to your friends. Hope you enjoy! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/civil-servant

Completed my first LDJAM game!

It would mean the world! If you guys would try it and leave some feedback! It takes around 5mins to fully check it out and it's available to play in the browser.

LDJAM50 Submission Page - Why Bother

Had an absolute blast trying to develop everything myself!

This was the first time I went in on my own as my friend wasn't available and ohhhhh boy was I in for a treat!

Not only was the theme very difficult I also had to struggle with the fact that I couldn't bounce any ideas off of someone else. :frowning2:

This led to me starting to doubt myself at the end of the first day and I basically had to push through with what I had, but in the end I'm completely happy how it turned out and can't wait for the next time where I get to challenge myself like this!

How we manage to separate light and color in our game "Endless Night"

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/the-endless-night

Hello everybody ! Our lil baby "Endless Night" was an amazing adventure and I want to share with you some of the tips we use to enhance the visual part of our game. I was the only one in charge of all the visual development (except animation) and I had to create a bunch of buildings to reproduce a 2D top down isometric medieval city.

01_Pipleine.png

During the development, wRadion, one of the devs asks me if I could disociate the lighting and the colors, to bring life in the game by adding variations to the lighting. So we decided to export all props in different painting passes like that :

01_Pipeline.png

This way we could see light variations and simulate some kind of night fog !

Please, feel free to discover our game and to share your feelings about it ! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/the-endless-night 20_GifLudumDare.gif Can't wait to see your games

Mr.Filton Deluxe | Funniest Crazy game

My personal favourite Hack of the Jam

I made the mistake of developing for Windows first, and then trying to export for HTML5 on Sunday night, only to find nothing was displayed correctly. The game uses two views: the game window, and a status bar. But GameMaker views are apparently a bit fickle in HTML5, and the game window simply didn't show up.

So I switched to using a single view and drawing game+statusbar to it, but this introduced a new problem. The game autoscrolls when the player reaches the edge of the view, and now "edge of the view" included the status bar. So autoscrolling was triggered 100px from the top of the screen, but only 20px from the bottom, making it impossible to see hazards when moving downward.

Fortunately, there was a truly hacky solution staring me in the face: have the player followed around by an identical sprite whose hitbox extends exactly one status-bar below, and tie autoscrolling to that sprite instead of the player.

player-scrollTarget.png

Terrible.

Round 2

So for round 2 I'm going to be playing in a speedrun I'll try to speedrun all the games submitted. Also pls play my game if you want,

How do you guys go about explaining your game?

We had troubles with player complaining about the controls etc. - fair enough, I was having the exact same expirience when trying it first (I was only doing art before :)) but once you got the hang of it, I think it's pretty fun and challenging (and believe me, I'm definitely not the playing Dark Souls kind of person.. lol)

I felt a bit sad because our programmers (and especially main programmer) put a lot of thought, effort and work into it (we slept like.. 5 hours total, lol) and I'm really really proud of the outcome!

I added a bunch of explanatory text and GIFs now, hopefully that helps. As you all know gamejams aren't the time for intricate tutorialmaking... ;D

GIF_combinationmove.gif

If anyone would like to try out our game, I would appreciate it! :) Will play your game in return! <3

~ Quick Retro ~

gator2-export.gif

I don't think I've ever posted a retrospective/post mortem here sooo here's a quick one for Nap Guardian

Things that went well

  • Stuck to my schedule

My plan is usually: Spend the Friday night making a mockup/planning out gameplay, Saturday finishing the base "game" (all mechanics + most art + some sound), and spend Sunday adding extra art/dialogue/sfx. I stuck to this and it's nice having a pretty chill Sunday where you know you can submit at any time!

  • Fought off the urge to scrap ideas or redo art

I always want to explore a bunch of different ideas, or draw multiple mockups... but I find that if I'm going to get a jam game to a playable state I need to just stick with an idea and keep moving forward.

  • I actually added a tutorial!!

No one likes having to read a paragraph of text on the game page to figure out how your game works. If you're like me you forget everything as soon as the game starts anyway. I'm really glad I allocated time and effort to making a tutorial this time, it ended up being really fun!

Things that went... okay...

  • Polished mechanics but didn't push them very far

I spent a decent chunk of time trying to make the initial mechanics feel good, but I rushed into making the whole game after that. If I would have spent another hour or two thinking about the core gameplay loop I could have pushed the base mechanics farther.

  • Didn't trust my gut

I thought an "endless mode" where enemies spawn forever would have been cool, but I backed out because I was afraid people would be annoyed that the game wasn't ending lol. Turns out some people wanted that!

Things that went not so well

  • Spent too long playtesting lol

I think I probably spent at least 2 hours of the jam procrastinating by """playtesting""". It's good to be thorough, but I could have used that time to add some of the extra sword/item mechanics I had as stretch goals. Whoops...

  • Took a couple bad shortcuts

I was lazy and just created a big texture rect for the background instead of making ~6 background tiles. I ended up having to change the map layout a few times, and re-drawing the shadows and moving details on the background to match the new layout was a really stupid time sink...

The end.

Thanks for reading and to those who have played my game already! Congrats to everyone who finished a game, can't wait to keep playing and rating <3

Jam is over, here's 22h38!

Well done to every jammer!

For the 50th Ludum Dare we tried something a bit bigger than we usually do: an exploration game in a time loop, with puzzle & narrative elements.

5PhzyNl.png

It was a great fun crafting this world during the weekend, all together in a house for 2 days, working, making lunch and having drinks.

In the game you wake up few minutes before 22h38, the time of the end of the world.

Hopefully you can touch Shrines to gain more time and try to stop the inevitable.

Our game preview!

Here are some previews for our game!

[Super Crusher Fighters ]20 already?! Thanks for all of your feedback!

Well, usually it takes a bit longer for me to get the 20 ratings, but I'm pretty sure I got blessed by the algorithm on itch.io because I see my game appearing in the LD section all the time, hah...

Either way, I just want to say a big thanks to everyone who's played my game and left valuable feedback. And in response to that, I'll write up a quick and easy post-mortem-ish post.

Looks like, once again, what is easy for me is not so easy for everyone else, and I made the game a bit too hard. I should've definitely slowed duwn the crusher a bit and made it easier to learn the mechanics (I though Level 1 was enough, but once again, I have that dreaded developer's insight :joy:).

This all just goes to show how much getting feedback from a third party is valuable for us game devs.

One positive I got from this is that even though I highly doubt myself in the music department, actually composing a quick tune for the game, even though it's nowhere near as good as I want it to be, seems to have had its little effect in the end, and has contributed positively to the enjoyability of the game! I shall definitely make another tune for my next LD entry.

Either way, I'm certainly not done playing through all those entries (having lots of fun on this LD)

PS: If you've read my ramblings this far, come check out Super Crusher Fighters! It's even playable on the NES (You heard me right)!

Battery Low – the creation of our soundtrack

One of our main concerns while making Battery Low was that it would bee too much Mario Kart and not convey the vibes we were after.

That's why the music played a crucial role in the creation and our team member Mascoll decided to bring a ton of his music making hardware to the hack.

With the help of equipment by the awesome BOSS: https://twitter.com/bossinfoglobal and Teenage engineering: https://twitter.com/jugendingenieur our @Mascoll dug into it and after an intense breakfast session we had it.

A 5 channel soundtrack that changes according to your movements and actions in the game!

Finally actually sat down and did my first game jam and managed to get it done in time for the compo deadline.

PASS THE TORCH - Delay humanity's demise at the hands of a deadly winter by sacrificing the old and the weak.

Emscripten is magic!

Seriously, it only took about 30 minutes to compile a webassembly version of our C++/SDL2 game, with only two lines of code changed in the game itself, figuring out how to set it up in itch.io was pretty simple as well. I highly suggest anyone else who did a game from scratch like we did to try it out, having a web version make a lot of people more likely to try it out. It's not perfect, resizing the window doesn't work when it does on desktop, but it's very playable!

What do the ~PEOPLE~ think about CryptoHunk?

Our market-leading market platform, CryptoHunk Market Platform, has been accused of being "fake", "a literal scam" and "just another sellout product designed to capitalize on the popularity of crypto"...

But who cares what lawyers, journalists and the morally upright have to say?

Here at CryptoHunk, we value the opinion of the people, specially like-minded individuals who have the BILLIONAIRE MINDSET!

So, what do they have to say?

Let's play "Whispers of the Heart"!!

Hello! ✨

Thinking about the theme "Delay the inevitable", we had an idea to create a game that links fire 🔥 (that inevitably will burn out) with the unavoidability of death 💀 itself.

So your main goal it's to read positive messages to increase the fire of will of your soul and save yourself. After that you can send your own message that will appear in the gameplay of next players! christine-simas-playinggamebaixaqualidade.gif

Hope you like playing it as much as we liked making it! Feedbacks are always welcome, and our team is currently working on fixing bugs and etc.

Loop

Hello everyone. This is my entry for the 50th LudumDare session. A few hours before starting, my computer let me down. I used an old laptop to participate at this event, but you can imagine that it was not really easy for me. For this reason, I did a simple casual game in which you control a bullet in an infinite loop trying to avoid other sprites - but the end is just inevitable. There is a leaderboard on-line in order to save your best score. Rate my game and I will rate yours. Leave a comment. This way I can find your project quickly. Have fun ++

Short horror game about EYES

Just wanted to share our game here too. It's called All Eyes on You and is a short horror game featuring a lot of cursed eyes

Spent the start of the jam filming my own eyes for a while lol and they really made it into the game. Was fun and silly to do, hope you enjoy it!

Also playable diretly in browser https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/all-eyes-on-me

What have we given up?

This presezgif.com-gif-maker.gifs was difficult to implement and we had to remove it, but I really like it, and maybe in the future I will use it

Do you like plants?

Hi, I äm Emil from Germany.

I made this game about plants 🥀🍃. In my compo game you are tasked with moving them around to keep them alive. How many plants will you have when the first one dies?

This is my first compo game and also the first one i modelled anything with blender. I tried to go for a clean and simplistic look and feel of the game. The game is not that complex because the most of the time went into "growing" plants, but i am happy with the result. It is a casual game that is best played on an android phone. I am looking forward to your feedback.

PS: Even, if you don't like plants, play this game, you can burn them 😣

Obligatory ugly whiteboard pictures

This is the story of how my game M.A.D.D. came about in some gloriously ugly whiteboard snapshots.

It all started on Friday with some ideas for all the themes (more or less) all_brainstorm.jpg

Then came the brainstorm on Saturday morning (sorry for the blurry pic, but that's all I got) brainstorm.jpg

The plan was born by the afternoon: plan.jpg

And the final game turned out a bit different: execution.jpg

Check the submission out at M.A.D.D.

This one just about killed me

Not really, but I do think finishing this game in time probably made it to the top 5 "most tired I've ever been" in my life. Got it submitted yesterday with under 30 minutes to spare after killing a gamebreaking bug at the last minute that crashed the game only on the release build.

Even though it was hard, I had a great time making it, and I'm having so much fun playing other people's games.

Here's my game, The Fire Will Die.

It's a story-driven survival adventure about a guy and a talking bear. Check it out if that sounds fun to you! screenshot.jpg

Mr. Twigs - It is possible to make no mistakes and still fail

Hi, folks! :blue_heart:

Though I've been working with game development for the past year, this was my very first game jam. When discussing what 'inevitable' things were interesting for us to make a game about, we all kind of reverberated with Picard's popular quote - It is possible to make no mistakes and still fail. That is not weakness, that is life. 23a2dac698b490c3baf00a50eb8bce96.jpg

Though the message itself is a bit heavier (and complex) than our collective story-telling capacity was able to handle, we quickly concocted a tiny story centered around a recently orphaned girl and her newly found snowman friend, Mr. Twigs. chrome_JqnjrRD7nI (1).gif

It was an interesting project to take on, since most of what I do has no actual planned story, only intent, and Mr. Twigs actually had its story panned out before we started coding.

It was also a pleasant surprise in that it required no "crunching": by relying on external assets for models and audio, we worked at a relaxed pace accross the three days - totalling around 28 hours of touch-time. I'm eager to repeat the experience.

Eternal Crisis has an HTML5 port

After some hiccups with sound delay, I was able to get my game running in HTML5.

Eternal Crisis

Fullscreen should still work and is strongly advised. I'd be happy if someone could give me some quick feedback whether this works for you, it's my first HTML5 export for LD.

Completed my first LDJAM game!

Reposting to get some extra attention (sorry if you've seen this already)

It would mean the world! If you guys would try it and leave some feedback! It takes around 5mins to fully check it out and it's available to play in the browser.

LDJAM50 Submission Page - Why Bother

Had an absolute blast trying to develop everything myself!

This was the first time I went in on my own as my friend wasn't available and ohhhhh boy was I in for a treat!

Not only was the theme very difficult I also had to struggle with the fact that I couldn't bounce any ideas off of someone else. :frowning2:

This led to me starting to doubt myself at the end of the first day and I basically had to push through with what I had, but in the end I'm completely happy how it turned out and can't wait for the next time where I get to challenge myself like this!

 crazy cool realistic lightning strike graphics below)

Time to get to the other side

I took one day to rest after the submission, but now it's time to switch from game designer to player and try your games.

Beware, I'm coming to test your game!

OK, maybe not like that…

Link to your game in a comment if you want me to play it (and rate it)!

Playing Dave! Our first Ludum Dare videogame.

First of all thanks @bdiaztobarra and @ayosetrujillo for this process of creating a video game in just 72h without our lead programmer. (I hope you have a speedy recovery Alberto)

We ended up with a narrative and funny game that everyone can enjoy. We had a short but neat video game in mind and I think that's what "Playing Dave!" is all about.

As the music composer and sound designer, I will say that "Playing Dave!" was a big opportunity to create with freedom, but always thinking about the narrative and different elements of the video game. I created each element to adapt the scene as well as I could, and designed different types of music that would reflect the different situations in the story.

It would be great if you could try "Playing Dave!" and post in the comments what is your opinion about it. Hope you enjoy it!
