Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

Going well so far!

Managed to get some simple combat mechanics in and making good progress with level generation, and unity has only crashed

6 TIMES

but I guess that's what I get for using a new version of unity I've not used before.

I'm streaming the whole thing if anyone is interested.

Making a dungeon crawler type game where you go deeper and deeper underground as the game gets progressively harder, I'm hoping to have a boss at the end or at least somewhere by the end of this.

HEALTH BAR

Stany_Zjednoczone.gif

guess who's eyes are those xD

Here we go...

So at last me and my wife got a theme, we starting on assets and some design for the game!!

Unity is working nicely as always and here we go... going deeper and deeper into this jam!!

6 hours or so in for me - progress so far

Hoping to create some kind of dungeon delving system similar to Stardew Valley's mines, where progress is achieved by finding the ladder.

So far I have:

Rough random level generation

A very basic enemy

A simple weapon system

Basic views and lighting

ludumdare48-progress1.gif

Finding the game like a pro

Here is how we decided our game: Step 1: Talk about the theme for hours and come up with a few to choose from. Step 2: Re-meet to choose one from those. Step 3: Someone suggests something ENTIRELY different. Step 4: Accept that one in a heartbeat.

I can't even.

So far we've trashed a casual game where you just descend down a hall with a rope and you have to evade monsters and find treasure on the sides of the hole. a turn-based game where you explore a tiled area, trying to avoid monsters and digging out stuff a tile-based tactical combat game where you go deeper in... space? hell? earth?

Now we are digging and building stuff. Possibly space dwarves. Here are some of the visualizations of the ideas: (made on Inkarnate) map.jpg

Run, Glim, Run! — Cave runner

Hi there! This is our first article about game development. We will talk about the concept here.

The meaning of the game is to help the cave creature (Glim), which was pushed out by the flow of water, to return home

Along the way, the player can jump, collect fireflies to replenish the supply of light. Or stumble over stalagmites, which will provoke the approach of water. The game ends if the player is covered in water due to tripping over stalagmites, fell into a pit, or plunged into darkness due to a lack of light energy.

Character concept Glim.png

Background color variations 1.jpg

(Compo) Hellevator mockup

Mockup.png

Going a bit slower than I wanted but hey, here's a mockup! It's going to be a methodical, claustrophobic shoot'em up on a platform sent down an endless chasm filled with hellish creatures. Your exoskeleton is heavy and clunky so every decision counts!

I am going with a top-down methodology since I am pretty confident about how my concept will play and feel. I just hope I will have enough time to make music for it.

Now, time to work on player animations and enemies!

Unity WebGL bug

Hey all, if you're using a newer version of Unity, you may encounter a bug uploading a WebGL build to itch.io

To fix it check this box: Project Settings > Player > Publishing Settings > Decompression Fallback

We are in with my daughter !

Hi everyone !

We are jamming for the first time with my daugther (she's almost 9).

It will be simple because it's an excuse to learn programming for her. Be gentle, we are newbies.

For now, our game is a clicker where you need to dig deeper and deeper to find diamonds. With your diamonds you can "buy" more "dig".

More later, we are just in the beginning ;)

Untitled mining game

Hey everyone!

I know... I know... a mining game.

I got a bit of a late start this time around, but I've got something to show at least. Just the basics now, but I think the idea could be pretty fun.

Basically you're a miner that can mine left, right, and down. The goal is to get as deep as possible, before you run out of energy/oxygen (Not implemented yet). You'll be able to collect oxygen as you descend to fill your supply back up, but you'll have to move fast and look out for obstacles that will slow you down or kill you.

I'm keeping the art style simple so no-one has to deal with my programmer art. Just simple sprites, and easily swappable color palettes.

I'm using PICO-8 for the first time. It's fun, but my inexperience with lua has caused me to hit a few snag but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Good luck everyone!

We're trying to come up with the character's style and identity, can't decide yet if it should be a human or a boat flowing downstream...

Have a nice #ldjam48 everyone!

A Game Has to Look Fun to Be Fun! Player Movement for Goldf

player_controller.gif

Making progress on Goldf, the subterranean gold nugget golfing game! I now have a basic player movement and collisions. There's also some visual flair and polish on the character as well as on the surroundings.

Adding visual feedback from player movement is always crucial for getting a good juicy game feel. Tricks like the flight particles or tilting the player model when moving sideways are super cheap to pull off. Adding some secondary movement - in this case the arms - can add a lot of character too. I highly recommend spending a few moments on adding small touches like those since their return on investment can be huge.

Here's a longer clip as video: https://youtu.be/jxVa_3luEok

Horror game, maybe?

Progress Animation

We're diving deeper into this idea, but progress is a little slower than I expected.GIF 4-24-2021 11-55-23 AM.gif

Getting there!

Still a lot of work to do, but it actually looks like a game now.

gif2.gif

The next step may well be the hardest: coding the enemy AI. I've programmed enemies that can move along pre-determined paths, and act at pre-determined times, but these enemies need to actively seek out the player and fire upon them while avoiding obstacles. I've never done this before. But that's what this jam is for: doing things I've never done before.

Here goes nothing!

Some Progress

Its my factual second Ludum Dare, and i wanted to get into it with some light MetroidVania. Given it is about delving deeper and deeper into a labyrinth

Progress so far

I started late but managed to get this much done in 6 hours. Which is the "core" of the game. The game is called "To the Core" and is based loosely on the Movie The Core with Hillary Swank.

Dig deeper and deeper to the core to place the nuke and make it back out in a time limit. Collect ore for power and avoid hazards (still to be added). If you run out of power its game over!

Item creation!

Hey guys!

First time participating in Ludum! I'm here to show you a little of our process of creating one of the items in our game: "Magicards and The Elemental Kingdoms".

We will not follow the chosen theme, but one of them is "Summoning", haha

We'll continue to strive! The projects I'm seeing are getting incredible, congratulations to all the warriors!

Pls, give us feedback of what you are thinking about it!

Digging in progress

slideDown.gif

Hi everyone, first Ludum dare for us. We are a team of 3, a programmer, a game designer and an artist. We are quite happy with how the game progress, we currently have the procedural generation for our map, some basic deplacement for the crew of the drilling machine and the asset of the machine.

We are often checking how others teams progress but it seem so far that we might end up with a game!

Making progress!

hey! we're making a multiplayer fighting game :)

Gameplay is mostly done, you are falling deeper and deeper through holes, you have to move your paddle to fit. It's a classic ! The twist is in the 3d visualisation with autostereogram and you should go deeper and deeper into trance!

Any comments are welcome!

I finally decided for something!

This theme is a though one hahaha! It is a bit late already but I am going to still give it a try! I decided to start making some drawings using Inkscape and started building my game using the Godot Game Engine! Here is a little update!output.gif

Programming is hell

Hello Community!!!

A year later, we are back in business, although probably not us, but only me, because my friends do not really want to participate, but I do not blame them!

I am an artist, so I do not know any programming languages at all, I spent most of the day trying to make the ball move and jump (it is so difficult!!)...

In general, the game is a vertical maze and you will have to descend deeper and deeper (very original), but you can see the split screen, so you will have to play on two mazes at the same time!

But not everything is so simple, a surprise awaits you, stay tuned! (I hope I will be able to fulfill all my plans)

Good luck to everyone!

https://youtu.be/9vxB7yZoxJg

In the video, a rough prototype, well, be sure in the end it will be a candy!

Main game mechanic : done. Now what ?

Hoplà,

Main mechanics are done. Now we have to brainstorm how to make it fun. "What is fun ?", THE big question !

And if we can add some sounds and graphics it will be nice.

Daughter, now, has a deeper and deeper understanding of programming.

By the way, we are programming with P5js. Simple enough to learn, wide enough to do anything we want ;)

My first LD — and possibly my very first "proper" game jam

This is my very first Ludum Dare, and my first proper game jam. I actually participated in a GDU Jam a few months back, but wasn't able to finish my game in time.

I'm very excited

I wanted to record my journey in some way — I considered streaming some of the process, recording my screen while creating or maybe writing a devlog piece afterwards. I settled for this multiple entry blog form as it's very friendly and I don't feel like making things even harder for myself, as, to be honest, I'm already a little intimidated by the whole process

What I know so far — I'll have about 12-18 hours to actually make and publish the game (I'm going for the Compo as it's said to be the "classic" experience), so I've spent the first couple of hours basically planning my work in 1-hour increments and coming up with a rough sketch that'll serve as a basis for the first prototype. I already have an idea / concept that I believe fits the theme, but I want to do some prototyping before sharing it here.

A little background on me — I'm on my late thirties, born and living in São Paulo, Brasil, and I currently work as a customer support / LiveChat agent for a gaming website. I worked most of my life as a multimedia graphic designer for ad agencies and studios, and I've also done some creative writing in comic books, short stories and gaming strategy articles. I have a little bit of experience on making games, but really not much. I basically made and published two very short experimental-ish games, one using Godot and another one using Construct 3 (which is what I'll be using for this jam). These are simple projects I created after following tutorials and watching a bunch of videos from creators Vimlark, Tim Ruswick / GDU, Jonas Tyroller, HeartBeast, Marcos Game Dev / Fuchter and Miziziziz, and getting inspired by works from indie devs such as Kultisti, Ludipe and poppants.

If you want to check my other games out, they're available on http://pijamar.itch.io

Any feedback is greatly appreciated, as my main goal with this jam (and with game dev in general) is to learn and have fun

See you on the next post

Snake on a Sphere

I had this idea of concentric spheres where you have to clear the outer shells to go deeper into the next level. I thought about some puzzle ideas, like Tetris, Lumines, or Yars' Revenge but none of them seemed to work in 3D. And then I thought about the old game Snake and I thought ... maybe, maybe this might work. So here's the start of Snake on a Sphere:

SnakeOnASphere_002.gif

Core Gameplay Done

I'm finished with the gameplay mechanics. This is the first time in a game jam, I programmed first. Now is Art-Time. I have to make this ugly but fun game to a pretty and fun game now.

Something's being made

Hello ldjam :) last time I participated was in 2018.

Started bit late but I've been working on something almost whole day, not sure what to call it yet. Here's first video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kXkzcCDeOc

got much of the basics, level generation, spawning and controls etc done. I'll dedicate most of the time to functionality + gameplay and I'll create some 3D art stuff in Blender tomorrow. Not sure if I'll have any time to audio.

well, back to jamming.

Oh hey it's working!

Don't Look Down.gif

I wish I was able to make more progress last night, but there's a lot of structural work done too, so this is honestly going better than expected :P

Ludum Dare 48 Progress #1

Here's a little work-in-progress update. I've got as far as figuring out the basic gameplay of "shrink down, grow up", so now I'll have to figure out how to make that work as part of a larger level.

No good idea for game?

I thought it would be easy to come up with an Idea for this. Turns out it's not. I'm a big fan of subnautica so I'm looking forward to the 50 quadrillion deep-sea exploration games!

Tried to post this last night

But I messed it up, must have been tired. The exploration tactics of our dwarf AI are coming along nicely. Day 2 begins!dwarfants.gif

Just getting started

This is my first LD. Had to do work stuff first, but still had time to brainstorm the idea. Goal - a topdown shooter-looter. Hope I will have enough time for coding

Some progress on ldhacker 1.0

scap2.png

So we are making a terminal, along with particle based graphics. Its all very pseudo cyberpunky/computer sciency!

This is fun, and could go well into an automation theme as well, although the ever-expanding directory listing will fit deeper and deeper decently i must say.

Its gonna be baws to make the futurewave music for this later :).

Change of plan

So I scrapped the idea of debugging a program but kept the puzzle-block-flow gameplay. You now have to guide an electric current to its destination by... uhhh... moving or rotating blocks or something like that. Still haven't figured this part out. And there will be some blocks that are nested circuits, which are basically nested levels inside levels.

Right now I just finished the current flow system, it seems to work.

circuitDemo.gif

Finished setting up the framework... Time to create!

Screen Shot 2021-04-24 at 1.01.58 PM.png

For this Compo I decided to write a game from absolute scratch in C. I've just finished setting up the framework, so I'll soon start the real developing of the game. My goal is to be able to compile for MacOS and Linux, but I'll be using platform independent libraries so anyone will be welcome to try and compile for Windows.

C Libraries being used: - GLFW: OpenGL Graphics lib - FMOD: Audio lib - libpng: to handle sprites and textures in .png file format - FreeType: to handle fonts (.ttf files, etc.)

So excited for this Compo!

Time to create!!

first draft

cvaWTSKIkF.gif

just got the idea immediately, not necessarily a unique one, but I want to make tight action with simple control (mouse button only)

Calling controls 'good'!

Wowowowwo.gif

OK! I really like how things feel now, and there's lots of potential for cool interactions. The player will probably start by only being able to have one projectile out at a time, then discover more as they descend. Next, I will create all the levels. Hopefully I can call it 'complete' tonight and then spend tomorrow polishing and adding in nice music and visuals, and some other entities. :)

my idea

Deeper and deeper was broad to me, so my idea is: Plants are getting back at humans for global warming. You need to go under ground, in a procedurally generated dungeon crawler, to burn the roots at it's source, to make sure the sicotic plants don't grow back. maybe some deeper lore, but that's the idea for the game.

[Mine Mayhem] Just about a day in

All art assets and most technical aspects to run this bad boy on the Famicom should be done. Now to implement gameplay, sound, and a few levels in Day 2! 20210425_021751.jpg

Protype playtesting in a nutshell

As we are too lazy to actually code any logic we've decided to printout prototype of our game and playtest it on the carpet. Progress so far...

New Memeco on the rail

Lone Rabbit - presskit.png I made the Memeco game for the itch.io Black and White Game Jam ( https://itch.io/jam/bw-jam ) during the last week. And I will continue the Memeco experiment for Ludum Dare 48 (Jam indeed, not Compo), transforming the concept in more "stages", following the "deeper and deeper" theme. memeco.png https://leyaotang.itch.io/memeco

Bumpy start

...As it often is. Got on the computer 12 hours into the jam, and then took the afternoon to really think up a good idea for the theme. Didn't end up with anything original, as all the interesting ones I did think up were very content-heavy (story-first, lots of assets), and I'd prefer something systems-heavy, as that's much easier to make good in 48 hours.

So: mining game. Hello to the 2000 other people who are making mining games! Let's make the best shoveling games we can. For my part, I started by opening my DAW and vibing with some sounds, trying to find a mood for the game. Didn't find anything particularly musical, but this one wind synthesizer inspired me to make a sort of abandoned ghost town in the wild west milieu. After that, I finally opened up Unity, only to have some problems building lighting, and then crash. I haven't done much Unity work on Linux before, so for all I know, this is what I can expect from the next 30 hours. Next up: sketching out a schedule to find out if this is viable to write from scratch, since I know that won't crash on me constantly.

Progress

Progressing well, although there's judging from the screenshot there's not much change from my previous shot. I'm doing the code first as I feel the game is nothing without that. Then I can add bells and whistles later.

Right now I have the basics for a rudimentary random level generation going. For now it'll just be a level generated in chunks of premade configurations. My original plan was true random level generation, but even though I've coded that before I didn't feel like it was important enough to get working this time around. Perhaps in a post-LD version.

I've been thinking of who the protagonist would be, and I've decided on Wilford the Wombat. Here's a quick sketch.

LD48_wombat.jpg

And the game itself with various unfinished elements showing:

Also it's pretty much official now, my partner is not going to be able to participate. His internet provider is evil, rip. This would have been a great learning experience cuz I was just teaching him how to program, but we'll have to think of something else now. Either way I'll keep on jamming.

They want me on my crazy side? There they go!

I started to make a little FONKY theme for the game. Besides make me completely laugh, I just really like where this is going!

Damn... I am such a scam... >.>deepy_theme1.JPG

Depth Charge first look

After 7 hours of work i have something to show off. Depth Charge is gonna be a game about a little submarine diving deep into the depths of the sea to find unexploded ordnance such as old sea mines and torpedoes.

Here is a Twitch clip of me showing what i have so far. https://clips.twitch.tv/WrongNimbleHorseradishUWot-IXO80whfZ2MaTINe

You can follow my progress live on https://www.twitch.tv/fatsheep__

The world now scrolls infinitely!

Honestly now that I've gotten over this tech hurdle, I think the rest of the game should start to come to me much easier. Props and blocks should repeat horizontally, and now I'm ready to code the actual gameplay. Screenshot 2021-04-24 183834.png

First time Compo Attempt

I feel like ld is always a lil tricky for me, because I tend to make games that people wouldn’t traditionally associate with this jam :joy: I’ve never entered under the compo category before but I’m gonna try this year!

Couple of things I’m trying this year: - sketching out my levels and creating an asset list in advance - building in gb studio, which I’ve used once before but never for a jam - basically just trying to plan more LOL

It’s not gonna be very traditional sadly because I’m using a visual scripting engine, but I hope sharing the source will encourage more people to use gb studio! It’s a wonderful little engine that deserves a whole lot of love

End of day 1

I believe that it is important to have at least a playable prototype by the end of day 1, so here it is

https://zwodahs.itch.io/ld48-plunge

Basic game loop is there, looking to polish it and add more content tomorrow =) Do follow or save the link on itch to play it when it is done.

I´m in

Hello, finally here for the compo.

I will be using Construct and a couple pocket operators for sounds and music.

Have fun!!

Compo or Jam?

Quick question: So far, I'm fully in the Compo, but I'm working with Unity 2D and I'm wondering if using shaders I have from the Asset Store would be against the rules?

On the one hand, they're sort of art assets I didn't personally make, on the other they're basic shader code I had from before the jam began.

Anyone dealt with this before? What was the outcome?

COLOR FROM OUTER SPACE

I turned the light's intensity to a huge value to check if it works properly.

Turns out it creates a cool aesthetics, I like it.
