Ludum Dare 59

I'm in (after a bit of a setback)

Inferno Collapse.png I was going to spend most of today coming up with ideas for each theme and building up inspiration, but when I got online today, I found out my Discord account had been hacked with the infamous virus that spams fake MrBeast "crypto casino" tweet screenshots... yikes! So I had to spend a lot of time dealing with that.

Now that's over and done with, I have 6 hours to prepare.

This will be my third Ludum Dare. The last time I participated in Ludum Dare was LD54, where I made Inferno Collapse in Unreal Engine. Before that was LD51, where I made Oasis Escape in Unity.

Since then, I've switched to Godot, so that means, if I manage to finish, I'll have made a game in all three of the "big three" game engines.

LD54's entry was a lot better than LD51, but it's still a bit janky. Hopefully my next entry will turn out even better.

30 minutes to go...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw Just 30 more minutes until the event begins and the theme is announced!

Meet the Slimes

The main skeleton

LD59's entry is coming along nicely so far. Here's the character you play as: Idle.png (Sorry it's not aligned correctly, this is an animated sprite sheet, but I haven't done the other frame yet) You may be wondering, why a skeleton? Before the theme was announced, my idea for the "Falling Apart" theme was a skeleton who had to prevent itself from falling apart. Since the character doesn't contradict the theme, I thought I'd go with it anyway.

In this game, you have lost connection with some currently unnamed supernatural world, and you must increase your "signal strength" by defeating waves of slimes to regain it. You become stronger and gain powers as your signal strength increases, but at the same time, the difficulty gets progressively harder.

I'm thinking of also making the signal strength your health. If it goes down to a certain point, you lose powers and the difficulty drops back down. That way, there's no "game over", you just need to get your strength back up.

Getting burned out, but pushing through

Screenshot 2026-04-19 201817.png If my game wasn't so close to being in a playable state, I would have probably gave up by now, but since it's so close, I'm pushing it to the end.

I plan to submit it to the Jam. That gives me a whole extra day, but I'll probably submit it early so I can move on with my life.

In this game, you increase your "signal strength" by defeating slimes. You start with just a stick, but as your signal strength increases, you gain new powers. Each power is extremely strong against one type of slime, and weak against the others.

It's pretty basic and not that great, but it's decent enough for a Game Jam game.

Sorry, I give up

I was enjoying the jam at first, but at about the end of yesterday, I got burned out and just wanted it to be over with. Since I already had a game that was near a playable state (even if it was basic), I was going to spend today finishing it off and releasing it, since a basic game is better than no game at all.

Unfortunately, when I tried to export my game, I discovered there were multiple game-breaking bugs in the exported build that weren't present in the Godot editor. They appear to be related to @tool scripts and my use of Engine.iseditorhint(), but I can't figure out exactly what I did wrong.

I know there's still a whole day left until the Jam ends, so I could spend that time trying to find all the bugs and fix them, but my mental state already isn't good, so I'm dipping out for the sake of my mental health.

I tried, but in the end, I failed.
