Player shadow

Added a shadow for the player so jumping is more fair.

Our PS1 entry now works on all PS1 emulators!

Thanks for people reporting that our game was not booting on all PS1 emulators. I uploaded a hotfix that fixes the game, so it is easier for everyone to experience: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/$399421

I am puzzled why the game worked on any emulator at all. My sleep deprived self had typoed line of code where I initialize the buffer for rendering polygons!

If downloading an emulator is still too much of an hassle, which I totally understand, here is a full play-through of the game:

How I made an entry for PS1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uA0eK7vO8s

  1. Make your first PS1 game in 2016: https://zhamul.itch.io/siikasaurus
  2. Decide that the modern toolchain is in bad shape and concentrate on other platforms
  3. Watch Pikuma's awesome PS1 course in 2024: https://pikuma.com/courses/ps1-programming-mips-assembly-language
  4. Check PSX.Dev: https://www.psx.dev/getting-started
  5. Notice that modern toolchain and resources for making PS1 games are pretty ok now
  6. Decide to try psyq + nugget with modern VSCode PS1 plugin to make a "hello cube": https://github.com/NDR008/VSCodePSX/
  7. Ludum Dare suddenly appears
  8. Make a game using all the great tools PS1 dev community has made! <3

PS1 was a difficult platform to work with, but all the wobbly quads were definitely worth the hassle!

I will be releasing an updated version with bunch of new rendering features, music, graphics and polish after the rating period ends. Its been fun continuing to explore PS1 game development after the jam.

Joining in with SEGA MASTER SYSTEM!

20250404_231206.jpg Here is a little test project I did as preparation for LD. This is first time I have coded anything for SMS!

Using devkitSMS: https://github.com/sverx/devkitSMS with GSLib: https://github.com/sverx/GSLib for development. Emulicious for testing and debugging and Mega Everdrive Pro for running on the actual hardware!

Crafing metatiles for our Master System game

Meta tiles (16x16) used in the map creation to save on memory: image.png

Actual tiledata (8x8) we load into background tile video memory (still some space for more): Naturampage_BGTile.png

Day 2 ends

image.png

One more day left for our Master System game! Tomorrow after work I need to implement all the art. Our debugging level is not very pretty, but it is really functional at least.

We will also have a two player coop! Rarity in 8-bit machines.

Roaring beast from abyss!

Behold the mighty ones that have came from the sea to claim the land.

Coming to your Sega Master System home entertainment machine today!

Just made it in time!

Making a game for Sega Master System was super fun!

Our scope was quite big, so we almost didn't make. 44mins left!

Little post jam update for our Sega Master System game

start.png

Our submission turned out great, but we had a few art assets that were made during the game jam that didn't make it to the final build. Our sleep deprived brains also missed some obvious performance optimizations. So we made this little update for the game as it deserved to be polished up a bit.

Gameplay and level design have remains unchanged.

Changelog:

  • Player two sprite is no longer corrupted
  • Map tiles that didn't convert correctly now convert correctly
  • Pollen and enemy bullets are animated
  • Main menu art implemented
  • Story text animated
  • Performance, especially in two player mode, has improved notably

Thanks for everyone who has played our game already!

All viruses collected

LDJAMVIRUS1.gif

I am making a Mega Drive game that gets corrupted the more viruses the player collects. Fun to play around with palettes, tiles, vertical scrolls and horizontal per scan line image modifications.
