Mars 9 postmortem type dealio take 2

I accidentally uploaded this thing before it was done and now it won't let me edit it.

Mars 9 is a short platformer about a robot created for the LD39 compo.

it can be played here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/mars-9

While I'm really pleased with how the game turned out there are a few things I would like to have done differently.

ld39 sc6.png

What went well?

  • I managed to actually finish the game
  • I'm pretty pleased with the main concept of the game
  • This is the first game I've ever made with a proper design document
  • According to the reviews the game looks and sounds good (Fun fact: All the game's graphics could theoretically be displayed on a real NES)

ld39 sc7.png

What went slightly less good

  • The game's really unfair at times
  • The thing's too bloomin' short. The game was originally supposed to have 16 levels split across 4 acts. Well, that didn't excactly happen now, did it? (As a matter of fact the two songs that play on the intro stage were created as stage music for acts 2 and 3)
  • Those bloody blue enemies! Why did I put them there!? They're not fun, they're just in the way!
  • I should have created more enemy types to make the game a bit more varied
  • I accidentally published an unfinished version of this thing
  • The title is waaayyy too similar to that of my LD38 game (AXL-5)

ld39 sc4.png

What went waaaayyyy down the toilet?

  • I spent the vast majority of the voting time at the scouting Jamboree in Kristianstad so I haven't been able to rate very many games leading to mine barely having any at all.

In conclusion

I'm still really happy with this game. In my opinion it's way better than anything else I've made for this jam thus far and it's been a great learning experience.

I'm in!

Third LD in a row, fourth overall. I'll be using: * Either GM:S 1 or 2 * Bosca or cgMusic (depending on if I have the time to try and make my own music or not) * Bfxr

Looking forward to this!

Proof of concept-esque thing

My essential idea is that every time you grab a coin the game becomes harder to control, but you have to grab the coins to win.LD40 physics.gif

It's alive!

I decided to make a pretty basic 2.5D platformer and it's working! Next up I need to come up with a setting for the game, as that will largely affect gameplay mechanics.

Setting and graphics!

I have decided on a space setting and made some pixel art, I decided to let the camera make use of subpixels, even though I kind of hate them. LD40 graphics! (small).gif

Title and screen!

I now have both a title and a title screen! LD40 menu.gif

Here's my game!

Here's my game. I don't have time to advertise it much or play many games so this is as advertise-y as it gets. LD40 screen 2.PNG If you want me to play your game please post it in the comments to this post

Apparently my game doesn't have enough ratings. Oops.

LD40 thumb.gif

To put it bluntly my game,Yuri the greedy spaceman doesn't have enough ratings due to me being tied up with school and christmas and whatnot and therefore not having time to play anyone else's games.

If you'd like to help I'd highly appreciate it but don't feel forced to.

If anyone comments a link to their game I'll try to play it but it's getting late here so it'll be a bit of a rush.

I'm in!

I'll be doing this thing for the fourth time now, I'll be using

  • GameMaker: Studio (Either 1.4 or 2 depending on what I feel like)
  • BFXR
  • Either cgMusic or bosca Ceoil (Depending on how lazy I am)

Finally, a bloomin' idea!

Almost 25% of the time has passed and I finally have an idea I'm happy with! It's a turn-based strategy adventure game about some kid and his robot best friend travelling through time.

It lives!

I now have these two little guys who walk about and some basic fogLD41 movement.gif.

More stuff!

I now have a camera that follows the charactrs, movement is slightly better and you can't see through walls anymore! I also added a mockup GUI but it doesn't do anything yet. LD41 betterFog.gif

End of day 1

And thus, my first day ends. Since the last post I've started working on making the different GUI options actually do stuff and implemented a basic battle system. LD41 battle.gif

Horror House With Mickey and TED is DONE!

LD41 title.gif

Ooooooh, nelly! It feels good to be done!

My weird mixture of a Point-and-Click adventure game and a Turn-Based strategy game is done, and it might be a horrible blob of spaghetti code, but it's my horrible blob of spaghetti code.

LD41 henning.PNG

Take control of Mickey and TED, two friends who venture into a haunted house in order to retrieve their baseball, all the while fighting off the hordes of zombies that reside there.
